I'm trying to update my iphone 4 but i keep on getting an error message - 43 saying that if I continue all content on the phone will be lost. Can somebody please help me.

If you open it to take out the battery from the iPhone then you forfeit all service for whatever reason from Apple in the future.
Have you attempt to connect it to your computer and then restore it from iTunes on your computer?

This means that either your firewall/antivirus is blocking access to Apple's servers, or you have used your computer to jailbreak an iDevice in the past. The link above tells you how to resolve this issue.

TS3694 hi just tried to update my iphone 4s with latest version of itunes and has stalled on reset with an error code of 36. have tried re installing i tunes and switched off security and new lead an windows update but still seems to recognize phone.

You have to delete the corrupt back-up so iTunes can at least back-up the current data on the iPhone and then restore it. Search these forums, there a several good posts on how to delete the corrupt back-up.
