  • Mid-2009 Macbook Pro will not turn on

    Hi Folks,
so my mid-2009 15in Macbook Pro will not turn on. I updated the OS to Mavericks in December 2013. I'm from California, but I recently moved to the Guam/Marianas area where it is more humid and generally around 87 degrees F all day. For the past month my computer has worked fine, albeit I did notice the fan was running a little more than usual. I usually would just put it into sleep mode when I would finish using it (apparently a bad idea based off of reading other posts concerning humidity and, more importantly, heat). One day I finished using it, closed it and the next day went to open it; I could hear the fans start to work, but then it stopped. It hasn't turned on since. You press the power button and nothing happens. I tried all the troubleshooting stuff.
So, my question is this: what do you think is the problem? Moreover, how much do you think it could cost to repair it? My experience with computers suggests to me that it's probably a dead motherboard. I'm wondering if it's worth trying to salvage this thing or if it would be prohibitively expensive. There are no Apple stores in the area to take it in to get advice unfortunately.
Now, I just want to vent a little frustration. I have many apple products, and I've even switched my mother over to an apple computer, but now that I need some very basic support, apple doesn't provide a contact e-mail or a free chat? I think charging someone $19 for 'one time assistance' is ludicrous. I bet if I brought this into an apple store I could at least get some advice, and thus get some idea how I want to proceed with repairs or not. I suppose I'm also rather frustrated that my macbook, which I have been most happy with all these years, breaks because I go somewhere a little more humid and generally warmer? It would appear that the hardware failure is connected to the climate. This makes me skeptical about purchasing another mac if it can't handle a little humidity. (I have not spilled liquids on it, nor have used this computer while transitioning from an air-conditioned/humid location which could potentially cause condensation). I do not think I'm being unreasonable (yes I do think a $2500 computer should not fail after less than 5 years), but if you think I am unreasonable, please enlighten me.
Thanks for any help. I really appreciate it.
    Ken

    Ken,
the “Important Handling Information” in the little white manual that came in the box with your MacBook Pro states that its operating temperature range is from 50 °F to 95 °F (10 °C to 35 °C), and that its operating range of relative humidity is 5% to 90% (non-condensing). If your corner of the Pacific is outside of these ranges, the manual states that “Failure to follow these handling instructions could result in damage to your MacBook Pro”.
I have no idea what problem your MacBook Pro has; since you’ve tried all of the troubleshooting stuff, you’ll need to somehow get your MacBook Pro to a qualified service facility to diagnose the problem. If the logic board does need to be replaced, it would probably cost hundreds of dollars for a replacement, and you might find that purchasing a replacement used MacBook Pro of the same model to be price-competitive with just replacing your MacBook Pro’s logic board.
If you find Apple’s out-of-warranty policies unacceptable, then your only alternative to venting would be to purchase your next computer from a different company which has out-of-warranty policies more to your taste.

  • My MacBook Pro will not turn on, bought a new charge still no power, My MacBook Pro will not turn on, bought a new charge still no power

My MacBook pro will not turn on bought a new charger and it still will not turn on

Then your problem isn't with the charger/adapter. Which model MacBook Pro do you have (e.g., "15-inch Late 2011")?
It's likely that you'd be best served by taking your machine into your local Apple Store or AASP and having the Apple techs run diagnostics. The diagnosis and estimate to repair should be free.

  • My macbook pro will not turn on and the charger is not lighting up

please help!! my macbook pro will not turn on at all, when i plug in the charger it will not light up at all, it suddenly shut down when i was using it.

Is there any charge left in the battery?
Press the button on the left side, near the front edge. If no green lights appear, battery is flat. And if the power brick ain't workin' (by virtue of its pilot light not glowing), then it will remain flat and the computer will not power up. If this is the case, maybe try with another power brick of similar size and see if it charges.
Else the logic board is toast and pitbull's on the money.
Either case, my gypsy crystal ball forsees a trip to an Apple Store or a Service Provider in your future...

  • My MacBook Pro will not start up, any suggestions?

My MacBook Pro will not boot up. I was aware of something odd when I switched it off a couple of hours ago  now when I push the 'on' switch something starts - fans I think, and the little indicator light on the front. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

I had the same issue I bought my MacBook Pro in Jan. my harddrive was bad and they had to replace it. I know the guy held down the shift botton for a little then pressed the power botton while still holding down the shift botton and it turned on but not completely since my hard drive was bad.

  • MacBook Pro Will Not Turn On. Charger light flashing

Hi there all. I am having a problem with my late 2011 MacBook Pro, and I have tried everything. I was wondering if you might be able to help. I will describe the problem in detail:
This morning when I woke up and went to use my macbook, it said the battery was 50%, even though it was plugged in. I use it like a desktop, plugged in to a monitor and plugged in to power most of the time. I usually allow it to drain the battery every few days. Anyway, I rebooted it, and the battery was still going down. I tried various things, like unplugging it completely etc. I remembered that my friend had this problem last year, with her exact same model macbook, and she came to me, and I was able to fix it. So, I thought if I followed all those steps I would be fine. I reset the SMC and PRAM. At this point the battery was showing at 0% when the OS (mavericks) loaded, and then after a few minutes the computer switched itself off completely and with no warning.  The light on the charger was sometimes showing orange but didn't appear to be charging after several hours. The battery indicator was flashing 3 times on the first light then fading. It was not turning on at all now.
So, I decided to do what I did to my friend's macbook to fix it.  I unscrewed and removed the back cover, then i carefully unplugged to battery from the motherboard, and left it unplugged for about 20 mins.  I also pressed the power button for 5 seconds while it was unplugged. I then plugged it back in, and made sure the plug was correctly seated, put the cover back on, and plugged in the adaptor. to my horror, this did not fix the problem, as it did with friend's MB. Now the light on the charger was flashing from green to orange, and there was a sound like a hard drive spinning, also the status light on the front of the computer was flashing white. So, I opened it up again and plugged in the power adapter to see what it was. Actually, it is the fan. Whenever the light in charger is orange, the fan spins, then when it turns green, the fan stops! This is with the computer completely powered off. I tried removing the RAM and reseating it. I have tried unplugging the battery, and plugging the power adaptor in. It still does the same thing. There no response to the power button at all. I tried a number of different key combinations that I found on various web sites, it will not respond to and key combos with the power button. It seems to just be stuck turning the fan on and off for over an hour now. I will unplug it, so it doesn't cause any further damage.
does anyone know of anything else I can do? I cannot afford to call Apple or have it fixed. Usually, I am able to fix these problems in my own.. But I'm not sure what to do now.
    Thanks in advance

Can you borrow a power adapter from someone and try that adapter with your machine? That would, at least, solve the problem or eliminate the power adapter as the problem.
If you have an Apple Store nearby, you should be able to get a free test and estimate for repair. It may be something simple, it may be something more complex. But if changing the adapter doesn't work, that's what I would recommend. If it is the adapter you're just going to need to buy a new one - and if you must do that make certain that you order a GENUINE Apple adapter.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

    Run an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
It may pick up some information that might give you a clue as to the unusual behavior.
Note: An error free AHT is not always definitive.
I still would go to an Apple store genius bar and have the MBP examined.  It will be done for FREE regardless of warranty status.
    Ciao.

  • My MacBook pro will not turn on after connecting to an external display

I connected my MacBook pro to a projector for a presentation using a VGA adapter. It worked for a couple of minutes, then my computer shut off and I can not turn it back on. It has never given any trouble before then. Now when I try to turn it on, the white led comes on briefly, then it makes a tone and nothing happens, the screen stays dark, any idea what is wrong????

Probably  option, command, P, and R to reset the pram. Article at link.

  • First gen Macbook pro will not turn back on after grey screen of death

Hi, i have a first generation Macbook Pro. As i was browsing the web, my computer all the sudden froze and the "grey screen of death" appeared and shut of my computer. After, it tried to restart, but it wont get past the CD rom  or hard drive noise it makes once you press the power button. I hear the noise fully cycle once, then it restarts the noise and keeps skipping. Once its done, the computer IS on, but the screen is black and I cannot do anything. Please help! Ive never dealt with thins kind of problem and Im sort of a noob with computers. Is the computer fried? It is after all 7 years old, and I use it daily.

After the startup sound (be precise) after the sound press the shift Key until the apple appear.
If that wont work. Try an SMC reset
    Then try a PRAM reset
This procedures are on apple webpage

  • Macbook Pro will not boot from any source after upgrade

    Hi,
I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro - standard issue other than more memory as I recall. It has a 750MB hard drive with more than half still free. All the checks given below are done with the computer stand-alone with no hardware attached - other than the power cord and of course WiFi.
2 weeks ago I upgraded to Yosemite having taken all the right precautions before upgrade - thanks to Take Control. It worked fine and I was getting a good experience until last Wednesday when I put it to sleep by closing the lid. Later in the day I opened it up again but only got a grey screen. After leaving it several minutes to see if it cleared I shut down by holding the on button for several seconds then tried to re-boot. The computer starts and gets as far as the grey screen then shuts down again after several minutes. Sometimes it will continue to restart after shut down and keeps doing this until I again hold the on  button in until it finally shuts down for good.
I have two bootable drives - one is a cloned backup of the previous version and all the data, the other is an 8GB thumb drive with a bootable version of the Yosemite installer. For the record I also have a Time Machine backup and a second full clone backup and recovery drive on a Synology NAS device -  I just haven't figured out how to boot from this device as yet.
I can get to the boot up selection screen (hold option key) and select an external drive to boot from but it makes no difference - I still get the same grey screen. Same thing if I use Command +R to boot from the Mac HD recovery partition.
I have also tried to boot into safe boot mode (hold the shift key down). This seems to slow everything down but ultimately has the same result - a grey screen. The only difference I can see is that this grey screen does not shut down after a time. Seems to just continue until I shut it down manually.
I can hold Command +V to remove the grey screen and see the action being written to the screen while logging on (white text on a blue screen) - up to a point.  After some time I just get the same grey screen and it shuts down after more time. I can also use Option +D (I'm told it should be just hold the 'D' key to do this but that has never worked for me and Option +D does) to get to the hardware check and I have run this both before upgrading and after having the problem. Before upgrading I got one error - 4ETC/1/40000002. I looked this up on the Internet and could find nothing specific to identify the problem and the general consensus seemed to be it was nothing major. After upgrading and running the hardware check again (after this problem occurred) it returned no errors.
I have reset the PRAM with the same result as before - all I get is the is the Apple logo and a progress bar that increases to around 50%, then both disappear and I get just a grey screen. After a time the computer shuts down and then restarts again and goes through the same process.
I've done pretty much everything I can think of and find in books and on the Internet. Hoping that someone out there will find this problem interesting and help me to resolve it.
    Tony

Problem resolved. I took the machine into an authorized repair facility where, for around $30, I had it checked and the logic board replaced. Picked it up yesterday and seems to be working OK. No cost to replace the logic board even though the machine is over 3 years old. There seems  to be some sort of dispute with Apple over a class action that has worked in my favour. Great. I'm happy.

  • Brand New Never Used Macbook Pro Will Not Power On. Please Help!

Ok so I just recieved my Macbook Pro 13" in the mail today, and when I went to turn it on it wouldn't. The power-up sound doesn't play and I have full battery power. I followed all of the steps leading up to the power-up step so I don't know what is wrong. I also tried all of the suggestions mentioned in the user guide, and don't know what to do next. I guess I will bring it in to the store soon if I can't get it fixed. Kind of disappointing since it is my first mac...

Lol yeh it came almost fully charged. I called Apple and am going to now send it back because it is DOA. Now I get to wait for at least another week before I get a new one. Ty for your responses.
