You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  ‘resetpassword’ (without the ’s), hit return, and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

Thanks for clearing that up all mighty Apple god.

I am having the same problem.
Really?  And you know this based on what?  The lack of a specific error message from the OP?

Yes... and as the saying goes, when one assume they make an a$$ out of u and me.
Stop assuming, let the OP provide some more specifics and then some actual troubleshooting can be done.  It's unlikely that your issue and the OP's are related.

I can only say that your best bet is to bring it in, I had the same issues that you are having, and today I brought it in, and they told me my logicboard is going to have to be replaced, and they said that Applecare covers it... Its odd because some folks say they won't I dunno if he was being nice, but hey, I took the advantage! GOOD LUCK!

  • TS3742 kernel panic when unplugging arduino

    Hello,
I have a very repeatable problem when doing development on an  Arduino.  Randomly when unplugging the Arduino from the USB port my macbook will Kernel Panic.  I've seen a lot of chatter about this on the forums but no solutions.  This is a serious problem for Arduino development on a mac, because you typically have to unplug and plug in the device to upload a new software version.
    Here is my environment:
    macbook Pro
    OSX Lion 10.7.5
    Arduino 1.0.2
Boards: Happens when working with both UNO and MEGA  boards.
Any recommendations would be most appreciated.  Even a way to close/open the serial port without unplugging so I could load new software would be a step in the right direction.
    Thanks!

Please open a bug report at http://bugreport.apple.com - that way Apple will know of the problem and hopefully someone will work on resolution.
PS - You will need the free Apple Developer Connection user id for reporting the bug.

  • I have the iphone 3GS and when I recently updated the software to 5.0, the phone has been slower and is messing up now, how do I fix this?

I have synced it several times and nothing changes. I'm afraid to restore it because last time it deleted everything on there, even when I updated it, Everything was deleted and I always back it up. But now the internet is slow and it just loads and loads and it froze a one point, I've turned it off then back on, still nothing.

There are several ways to get iOS on your phone.
In iOS 5.0+, go to Settings<General<Software Update
Connect your phone to iTunes and select "Check for Update". It should prompt you for 5.1
Google for a direct copy of iOS 5.1 for your phone and download it to your computer (it is downloaded from Apple servers, so don't worry about voiding warranty). Restore your phone as normal and hold down Shift (Windows) or Alt (Mac) when clicking restore to specifiy which iOS build you're putting on your phone. You would want to use the 5.1 file you downloaded)
Can you specify the error given?

  • Kernel panic when waking PowerBook from sleep on a new network

I occasionally take my PowerBook from home to work, and lately there have been several instances of my PB having a kernel panic when I plug in the ethernet cable and wake it from sleep. I have not tested this extensively, but it seems to occur under the following conditions:
    1. PB is disconnected from network location 1, and the lid is closed so that it goes to sleep.
    2. PB is moved to network location 2, the ethernet cable at that location is plugged in, and then the computer lid is opened, causing the computer to awake from sleep.
    3. The computer has a kernel panic immediately on awaking.
I believe, but am not absolutely positive, that this does not occur if I awake the computer first, and then plug in the ethernet cable. Unfortunately that order of doing things is counter-intuitive to me, as I tend to want to plug everything in before waking the computer up.
Possibly a factor: At my home location I have a manually assigned IP address and other location-specific settings, whereas at work I change the network settings to fully automatic once the computer starts up.

    Hello DistantThunder
In most cases kernel panics are a result of a hardware error on some cases a software error.
I would suggest you look at an excellent procedure for resolving these issues on Dr Smoke's website.

  • My Macbook Pro - will not update the software update - it freezes

when prompted to update the software - currently I am on ver 10.5.5 - it asks to restart the computer and install - I continue then the screen freezes and the installation bar has hardly moved - I have no way of shutting the computer down - I have to take out the battery to get it to start again - Can someone help

Rather than update through Software Update (which in your case will run the incremental 10.5.6 updater) download the 10.5.6 combo updater from Apple web site and use that. Repair Permissions before and after.

  • Kernel Panic when Updating from Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.7 Server Software

I tried updating our G5 Xserve with the 10.4.7 DVD. Since I have only a CD drive in the Xserve, I used a Mac Mini in target mode with the Server Install DVD in the MacMini DVD drive. Upon restart at the beginning of the install process, I get a Kernal panic.
I have a Village Tronic MPDDpro graphics card with latest drivers. 1 GB of memory. (I also tried using an external DVD firewire drive, but get the same kernel panic when Xserve tries to boot from the OS X Server DVD)
I was unable to get the xrdiags to provide any output. Tried unsuccessfully to get a Mac Mini running OS X Server to Netboot properly, so tried with xrdiags on a CD. Again no output back to the terminal administering the xrdiags start.
I tried putting the Xserve in target mode and installing the 10.4.7 from the Mac Mini. Install process went through successfully, but when I rebooted the Xserve, and before getting to the Setup Assistant, I got the Kernel Panic again.
Needing then to re-install 10.3, I reinstalled the 10.3 Server with the original disks and updated to 10.3.9 and reinstalled all the application software and setup users etc, (days of work) all went well with 10.3.9 Server.
I need to get up to 10.4.7 soon!
Any ideas what to do next?

Thanks for helping. I'm green at this! Getting definite experience as you can see, but can you help me with an actual real live make and model of a graphics card that is known to work on the G5 Xserve?
I called ATI re: their Radeon 9200, and was told by tech support that they do not support this card on the G5 Xserve. Yet, Scott Maiden, in his post above, referenced an ATI Radeon card.
What cards are being successfully used? Can I have a list?
Apple Tech Support will not give any such list. Maybe they know of some problem with all? (When I bought the Xserve in September of 2004, Apple Tech Support recommended the VillageTronic card.) The new, yet un-released Quad-core 64-bit Intel Xeon Xserve has "built-in graphics functionality, with mini-DVI output and support for industry-standard VGA displays," according to Apple's web site. Hopefully this will eliminate this type of problem in future releases of Xserve. But for the nasty here and now...
All I need is an inexpensive graphics card to administer this Xserve. Currently I am using a 21” SuperMatch SVGA monitor.
Thank to all who have helped.

The only cards I have found to work reliably in the
G5 XServe are the cheap-arse PCI models. I do not use
my XServe for serious graphics work so I do not know
how it works with other cards.
Can you swap in a known compatible PCI card for
    testing purposes?

  • KERNEL PANIC WHEN ATTEMPTING TO BURN AUDIO CD IN ITUNES & TOAST

This computer has recently been fully updated to the latest MacOS 10.3.9
This includes the latest version of Quicktime 7 iTunes 6 and Toast 6 Titanium
Prior to that the external usb TEAC CD-RW (Amacom Baby CD-RW) was not recognised in either iTunes or Toast. After consultation with Amacom the usb cable firmware was updated and all was resolved.
Now having completed these recent updates when I attempt to burn a cd a KERNEL PANIC occurs
    On seperate occasions:
In iTunes the bar indicates ‘writing audio tracks’ when it changes to ‘burning’ the kernel panic occurs
Toast indicates ‘writing cd’ and then commences burning and the kernel panic occurred
Toast also burnt one cd and gave the message ‘your cd is ready’ eject – I did this and another kernel panic occurred
I have run the the original MacOS intall disk Utilities verify and repair permissions but this problem still occurs
    Power Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

so you realize kernel panics have specific causes. The kernels we get on our FCP machines have always been followed by graphics card meltdowns or some other horrible hardware failure.
I cannot begin to imagine why iTunes would initiate a kernel shutdown unless the optical drive is going bad. Have you tried other tasks that use the drive such as playing DVDs?
Try deleting the preferences for iTunes?

  • What is wrong with my user account?? Why do I get kernel panic when restart

Hi there. I got Leopard and was quite unhappy (don't think it was meant for a powerbook). So I started using Tiger again, and I flip flopped once or twice after the update came out for Leopard, thinking/hoping it would fix my problems. It didn't. I have given up on Leopard.
But, now Tiger seems to have a few problems of its own. I get the kernel panic when I restart my computer (telling me to restart), so I have to hold down the power button to turn it off and then turn it back on. Not a big deal, but if it shouldn't be doing that, I don't want it to, ya know? Never did it before Leopard.
My user account seems to be dysfunctional when it comes to downloading plug-ins for safari or firefox. I had to create a new user account and download the plug in from that account and then drag it into the HD to use it on my user account. I repaired disk permissions and booted from Tiger and did the same thing on there. After that, my user account is still not able to download that plug-in without getting errors (256)?
Is there a way to do a reinstall of Tiger from a blank slate, and be sure there won't be any problems?
    Thanks!

Leopard will work with your Powerbook, the question is, is all your software and hardware ready for it?
Is there a way to do a reinstall of Tiger from a blank slate, and be sure there won't be any problems?
You can start from a blank slate, but if you have a hardware problem that started to generate itself, a blank slate won't solve it. It is called an erase and install. The first thing to do is backup your data*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Once that is done at least twice, we can start looking at solutions for kernel panics*:

  • MBP Kernel Panic when connecting to HDTV (DVI)

I have a 15" MacBook Pro that has been working perfectly since I got it. I tried today to connect it to my Hitachi 51" HDTV (via DVI) and got an instant Kernel Panic. I used my 15" Powerbook with this HDTV without any issues.
I've searched and found folks with kernel panics when waking their MBP if the RAM is faulty, but nothing at all about issues when connecting an external display. I am running with all the latest updates, firmware update, etc.
I don't have any problems connecting to a 23" Cinema display or to a 19" Samsung LCD, but I tried several times to connect to the HDTV and got a kernel panic each time. I changed resolutions on one try and still got the same issue (720x480 so the TV would see it as 480p). I even tried booting up with the display already connected and it kernel panic'd when it tried to switch into the full OS X GUI.
The specific error is in the panic.log is:

I'm fairly technical but this is overkill even for me. I managed by googling "AGC GPU REGISTER RESTORE FAILED" to find a japanese blog that helped me fix the problem but it's only partially solved. I'm not getting any kernel panic attacks by switching of the integrated graphics under "Energy Saver" in system prefs but instead getting decreased battery life as the computer is constantly using the dedicated graphics card. So in other words when I untick the "Automatic Graphics Switching" the problem is gone.
I always get the same report and it doesn't really matter if I'm pushing the machine to it's limits or just writing something in TextEdit. When speaking to Apples support advisors they implied that it's most likely not hardware related but software related. I personally think that it's most likely the driver related and could be fixed by modifying the AppleGraphicsControl.kext file but I can't be sure. I've never modified a kext file before and feel a bit uncomfortable doing it without any assistance.
Could anyone please give me some advice. It would be sincerely appreciated.
    Thanks
PS. Forgot to add that I've reinstalled Lion several times, reset SMC, PRAM, etc. None of that worked.

I had to send my MB Pro to an authorized apple service provider where they ran diagnostic tests on it and concluded that it was the logic board (motherboard) that was as seeehr germans would put it "kaput". After they replaced it with a new one and re-did the tests everything worked fine. So in my opinion waiting for a SW update to fix the issue one would have to wait an eternity. Just let the technicians take a look at it and they'll most likely replace the logic board or the entire computer depending on what makes most sense for them.
This is not a software glitch but HW. The only reason one does not experience this in bootcamp is due to no automatic graphic switching in windows. It only runs the dedicated GPU and never switches to the intergrated Intel HD3000 GPU.
Hope this gives you some clarity.
PS. I asked the technician if he could give me a detailed explanation in regards to which part of the GPU / logic board was causing the issue but he couldn't answer that question.

  • Experiencing Kernel Panic when computer sleeps???

I have a late 2013 MBP... I recently updated my OS to 10.9.2 Immediately after updating my computer began experiencing kernel panics when it would sleep for various amounts of time (couldn't recognize a real pattern). After a few days the problem seemed to happen more frequently and eventually happened everytime the computer went to sleep. I contacted Apple Support and they have deduced that it is a hardware issue (doesn't make sense to me since it only started happening after a software update?). I did install an aftermarket SSD, so I thought perhaps that was the problem, so I installed a new one... to no avail, still experiencing the same problem. I've come up with a temporary solution... I simply have my computers settings adjusted so that my computer does not sleep. This obviously has not solved my problem, but is a temporary fix. Anybody have any ideas as to what is going on???? Thanks in advance!

The version of virtual box I have on my system may not be the most absolute current up to date, but it is certainly the mac os version. Besides, virtual box wasn't running. It's just a freebie alternative to Parallels allowing me to run windows. But again, unless I'm doing something in windows, virtual box isn't even fired up. It wasn't last night when I put the system to sleep.
How do I find the hardware test that came with my system? Is it on the install dvd? What's it called?
    THANKS!!

  • Kernel panic when waking from sleep

My eMac (1Ghz, 256 Mb RAM, dual boot OS 9.2.2/OS X 10.2.8(upgraded from 10.2.4)) has a recurring but intermittent issue where it suffers from a kernel panic when waking from sleep.
In the past I managed to fix the issue by resetting PRAM and NVRAM, but this doesn't seem to work anymore.
Things I've found out until now:
    - Apple Hardware Test and Techtool Deluxe can't find anything wrong (all tests are passed).
    - No kernel panic log is written - apparently the kernel panic occurs before the log can be written.
    - Crash appears to be network-related. My IP address and network card address are shown at the bottom of the panic window.
    - After restarting, Finder windows revert to a state from two or three days ago...
    - Login items aren't the problem. I removed them all - this doesn't make any difference.
    - no weird things in the startup items folders, AFAIK.
I'm on the verge of reinstalling OS X, but I think I already did this a couple of years ago, and it didn't help.
    Please help.
    Thomas

Nominally, you'd download the OS X Update Combo 10.2.8 after reinstalling 10.2.4, then use Software Update to identify any additional security and other software updates. There was an issue with early builds of 10.2 failing the 10.2.8 udate if done directly, but working fine if one first updated to an intermediate version such as 10.2.6; I think that problem affected 10.2 through 10.2.3 and your 10.2.4 should be good to go directly to 10.2.8, but if there are any problems, you can go back to 10.2.4, then search the Apple Downloads link for 10.2.6, then 10.2.8
With 10.2.x, it's prudent to run Repair Permissions after each OS and security update before moving on to the next.
