Make sure you have signed-in your iTunes and authorized the computer.
Go to iTunes menu EDIT > PREFERENCES > DEVICES tab and check the Box "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically then OK.
As long as you don't sync your devices, iTunes will not wipe out music from your iPod. Now connect your iPod and do the Purchase transfer only.

Typically you can delete content on the iPad one of two ways - swipe across an item in list view to bring up a red delete button or tap and hold down on an icon to bring up an X to delete option.
Why dont you connect your iPad to your laptop and transfer the purchases and then select exactly what you want to sync to the iPad. You don't have to delete anything this way.

Got a new computer with windows 8 bought some tunes but cannot sync them into my nano (version 6) don't know much about computers

In the latest version of iTunes, the sidebar (on the left side) may be hidden. To show it, go up to the menu bar, under View, and select Show Sidebar.
The iPod can be loaded manually (by dragging items to it from the iTunes library), or using automatic syncing (by setting up the iPod's Music tab in iTunes). After making the sidebar visible, if you have questions about using automatic syncing or the manual method to load the iPod, please post back.

You should be able to copy it over from your iPad to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases, or depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) you might be able to re-download it on your computer's iTunes via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page

I have lost some music. I broke my iphone 5, bought a replacement from apple store, they downloaded most of my data and apps back onto it. Some of my music appeared back on it, some is lost. When I go to buy music again from itunes it says 'purchased', but it doesn't show on my iphone, my laptop or icloud (I cannot see any music on icloud). can anyone please advise?

Apple doesn't have an e-mail address. Unfortunately you'll have to resort to snail mail, for anything that can't be answered by phone or the website.
