TS3988 "Problem turning on mail" -iCloud

I'm attempting to sync notes on my iPhone through the cloud. When I hit the slider in iCloud preferences to do this, I'm prompted to create an "@iCloud" email address. When I attempt to do this, I get an alert that reads "Problem turning on mail. There was a problem turning on your email, try again."
I've tried many times and restarted my phone, to no avail. My calendar, reminders, contacts etc. all sync up just fine.
I'm running iOS 6.0 (beta) and Mountain Lion. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I have the same exact problem on both my iPhone 4 and iPad 2.  I've read dozens of forum posts but have yet to find an answer.

  • Problem turning on Mail.

Several months ago, I set up mail just fine on my computer and iPhone 3GS. I'm trying to set it up on my husband's 3GS and keep getting an error message. I go to settings, iCloud, slide the slider to turn on mail, select create free account, and it says "Problem Turning On Mail" and in smaller font, "There was a problem turning on your email, try again."
My husband hasn't used his me account for anything more than iTunes, and maybe an occasional email. Does iCloud need to be set up first on his computer, before his phone. If so, we're ordered and are waiting for Lion. He's got an older macbook pro (2006), and I was told by apple it can't run anything further than that. I can use his log in and password to access iCloud on my computer. He just wants it on his phone now.
So, do we need to wait to install Lion and set up iCloud on his computer first, or is there something I'm not doing correctly to set iCloud up on his phone. We

I'm not sure why you are getting this error when trying to set up iCloud email on his phone but you do not need to sync your computer with iCloud in order to use iCloud email on your phone.  All you need to do is set up a valid iCloud account on the phone.  If deleting the account and trying to set it up again doesn't get it to work, set up an appointment with the genius bar at a nearby apple store and have them take a look at it.

  • Icloud setup gives error "problem turning on Mail" "there was a problem turning on your email, try again"

No, I don't have multiple Apple IDs. No my email address is not taken. Running IOS 6.1. Is Apple ever going to solve this?

Have you tried the simple things first like a reboot...hold both the power and home buttons until the Apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if it appears?  Sometimes it is also necessary to remove and reenter a password in case it has been corrupted.  And sometimes I have just had a bad connection signal and that has been the issue.

  • When I try to create an iCloud email it tells me "problem turning on Mail" "there was a problem turning on your email, try again"

I have re-started my phone and re entered my address (or what I want it too be) I have wi-fi and I am getting my other email (gmail, aol, etc...) but this is not working for me.. can you tell me what to do??
    thanks in advance

  • Problem setting up an icloud email address on IPad

    Hello,
I'm trying to set up an email on my new IPad.  However afetr choosing an acceptable (not already taken name) I get error message:
    'Problem Turning on Mail'
There was a problem turning on your mail, try again.
I've tried again but no avail.......
    Any ideas world.....?

When I go to Mail, Contacts, Calendar, then tap icloud it prompts me for my apple ID. My Apple I.D is the the only thing I've ever used ([email protected]), i don't have a  dot me or cloud dot com account.  But when I enter my Apple I.D a message states as follows :
    [email protected] is Already Added
The iCloud account has already been added to your iPad

  • TS3988 Can't set up icloud account

I am not sure that my icloud account is active.  I am trying to set up the icloud e-mail account on my ipad.  When I tap on settings and go to icloud, under icloud the account name is my apple ID(e-mail address).  The mail and note buttons are in the off position.  When I tap the off button( for mail) to turn on, I get a messege that says "turn on mail", "create a free icloud.com e-mail address to turn on icloud mail."  I get the same messege when I tap the notes button to turn notes on. I then tap on create.  When I try to create an icloud.com address ([email protected]), I tap next. I am shown my icould e-mail address that I created. When I tap done, I get a messege that says "problem turning on mail", 'there was a problem turning on your e-mail, try again. The same thing happens when I try with notes.  What am I doing wrong? How do I know whether I have created an icloud account? How do I turn mail and notes on?  My iOS softare is up to date so I know that is not the problem.

You can check your account by going to icloud.com from your computer and singning in with your iCloud ID.  Then click on Mail to see if your email account is active.
I'm not sure why your are getting an error message when you try to set up your iCloud email account.  Perhaps there are server issues right now.  You may need to try again later.  Also, it's normal to be prompted to set up a mail account when turning on notes syncing.

  • HT1338 my mail is working but the little wheel keeps turning beside my iCloud account

my mail program on my MacBook Pro Lion is working but the little wheel is constantly turning beside my iCloud mail account. Can you tell me why this would be - it started last night when I got a note saying that I had connected to a site without a trusted certificate and I clicked.. trust. Would this cause this little wheel to be constantly turning beside my Mac mail account in Mail. ???

Hi Grebus, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Quit Mail...
First I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • Why do I get an "unable to connect - There may be a problem with the mail server or network." message from iCloud.  I have verified the settings.  I can access my iCloud account online but can't send or receive e-mail via the mail account.

Text limits to the "Question" link prevents a full explanation:
This is a long-time problem.  I have tried to resolve it with Apple but their "Customer Support" is merely a name.
I can go online and access my e-mail but when I try to send or receive e-mail via iCloud through my internet server (Google fiber now but the same situation existed with my prior service), I receive "There may be a problem with the mail server or network.  Verify the settings for 'Apple Email' and try again.
"The server returned the error:  The server 'p0-imap.mail.me.com' refused to allow a connection on port 143."
Well, I have verified the setting and tried again and again and …
Well, you get the idea …

User Name: Your iCloud email address (excluding @me.com)
    Password: Your password

Maybe you should test these things before calling people out, because these settings do function perfectly well.
iCloud is not supported on Snow Leopard or lower, why bother to mention it?
The OP has an iCloud account, and that can not be opened without Lion or Mountain Lion (on a Mac), IOS5 or 6 (on an iPhone/iPad)
The document I linked to is Apples documentation for iCloud on current devices,I don't care whether you believe that you know better than they do, but it will affect the people who follow your advice as it won't work

I never said that there was, perhaps you imagined it.

I made the fatal mistake of allowing iCloud to handle my @mac mail account.
I had set this address up with aliases and never had a problem.
Ever since iCloud has been handling it I have had problems.
It seams impossible to claim my account back from iCloud. How can it be achieved or has Apple set a booby trap?

iCloud is the successor to MobileMe. MobileMe shuts down forever tomoorrow.
If you only want to use the email portion of your previous MobileMe account you can. You do not have to use all the other features of iCloud, just like you didn't have to use all the other features of MobileMe.
The email account has not really changed at all. Just the server address it comes from.
The sending emails problem you are having, is this on your Mac in Mail, in webmail at iCloud.com or on your iOS device?
When it doesn't succeed in sending, what does it do? Any error message?
What mail server settings are you using in Mail? What version of Mac OS X are you using?

  • The default account option in iOS for contacts is missing; while I have multiple account options for mail and contacts are turned on for iCloud and other accounts.

The default account option in iOS for contacts is missing; while I have multiple account options for mail and contacts are turned on for iCloud and other accounts.  I previously was able to select between my Microsoft Exchange Contacts (work account) and iCloud (personal), but both those options are now gone.  I tried turning contacts for both off and on and rebooting, but it didn't help.  Any ideas?

Just a guess but if the exchange account is from your employer, your employer may have installed a security profile to your device preventing you from adding or editing contacts in the exchange account by removing the Default Account setting.  You would need to check with your employer's IT department to confirm this.  You could also test this by adding a Gmail account and turning on contacts syncing with Gmail to see if the setting reappears.

  • Problem setting up an iCloud email

I'm trying to set up an iCloud email on my iPad.  I typed in the email address that I would like to use.  When I hit DONE it says "there was a problem turning on your email.  Please try again later"
It's been doing this for the past 2 days.

Do you have an apple id? If not at bottom of icloud will say create a free icloud account and just follow the steps. If you already have an apple id you need to turn on notes or mail in icloud and it will prompted you to create a free @icloud.com attached to your current apple id. If you get error message or stop on a screen tell us so we can help. Also you can always check with apple because they make the apple ids, if you needed to. This webpage talks all about icloud accounts http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/ios.html. Also you may want to look at this article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4436 for icloud FAQ.

  • Mail cannot be enabled at this time wait a moment and the try turning on mail again

So my icloud and apple store account just stopped accepting my old password.
This included my iphone, apple tv, macbook air and my wife's ipad
    I resent my password
Updated all the accounts and all seems to be good with the exception of the OSX Mail client
That seems to be an issue connecting to icloud
The following works and/or are syncing under System Preferences -> Mail Contacts and Calendars
    Contacts
    Calendars & Reminders
    Notes
    Safari
    Photo Stream
    Document & Data
    Find My Mac
*I've never tried to enable Back to My Mac nor do I want to
Mail gives the following error: mail cannot be enabled at this time wait a moment and the try turning on mail again
I've enable my mail again by adding my icloud again as a separate account to Mail Contacts and Calendars
Weird thing is it only has mail and notes as options.
I know this fix is a temporary hack, and I'd like to get a permanent solution
I've also been checking my credit card linked to the account pretty obsessively to see if theres any issue on that end. No problems so far.
FYI - Running mountain lion and currently in Philadelphia

My wife and I share one Apple ID.  I am on iCloud and she is not (yet).  If she turns on here iCloud capability does that mean our device content will be merged?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
To begin with, I would like to try to explain Apple's confusing nomenclature in regard to iCloud.
Apple have called the whole cloud thing iCloud, there are a number of features under the iCloud umbrella, some of which require their own login. iTunes is one of these, another is what Apple have unfortunately also called iCloud too.
You can use the same Apple ID (account) to login to both iCloud and iTunes, but you don't need to and often users will login to each service using a different ID.
The part that you need to remember is that the services available when you log into iCloud are completely different and unrelated to those when you log in to iTunes. Your iCloud login enables mail, contacts, calendars, find my phone, Back to My Mac, Documents & Data sharing and photostream, it does not affect any of your iTunes services.
To avoid confusion when discussing your problem, when I mention iCloud, I am referring to the services under the iCloud login, Whereas I will refer to the whole cloud thing as The Cloud.
To avoid your data being merged, your wife should open a new account and use it just for iCloud, she can continue to use the existing account for iTunes, so that you can continue to share your iTunes content.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.appstore.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
