I thought I had about 20,000 raw images in crw, cr2, nef and tif camera raw formats.
Over the years, I had backups and duplicates scattered about, but each unique image had the same base name... yymmdd_serial#.
So I looked forward to using LR to help organize the mess.
I created a LR database and incorporated my most complete collection, converting all to dng as I went. I ended up with about 20,ooo images.
I then began importing from other sources with similar, but not identical file structures, and with ignore duplicates checked. I was suprised to learn that I actually had about 30.000 images.
Unfortunately about 10,000 were duplicates of two dng types.
1) Many were copies with -2.dng added to the original file name. This must be a problem with the DNG converter which goes through any directory and simply copies and renames duplicates. These are not too difficult to eliminate with Vista's search for *-2.dng.
2) Much nastier was the fact that dng files with the same name that existed in different subdirectories were imported and only when I tried to clean up some of these subdirectories in LR, was I informed there were other files with the same name. So I had to use BreezeBrowser to find and eliminate about 5000 duplicate dng files... Now they are not exactly duplicates because many were gereratedThat may be a consequence of not being on the forum, but by email or RSS.
I much prefer direct forum psoting, myself.

Photos created thousands of duplicates
After setting up iCloud Photo Library on my iPhone and Mac, I realized that I suddenly had 10,000 photos and 400 videos (I originally had half of each). I called Apple and they basically said that my iPhoto Library (where I and most Mac users had imported and stored iPhone pictures) had merged with my phone photo library, and there is no way to reverse the process.
Not only have most of my photos been duplicated, but they are all out of order. Pictures from the night of November 19th show up again on November 20th, for example. This is a massive pain...the idea of sorting through 10,000+ pictures and deleting half of them sounds like an absolute nightmare. I also had to upgrade from 20GB of iCloud storage to 200GB because APPLE doubled my pictures.
At least iPhoto warned you when you wanted to import duplicate photos...now they just do it without even asking you! Who the **** designed this Photos app?
Does anyone know of a way I could easy delete duplicate photos in the Photos app? None of the photo-duplicate-deleter apps I've seen in the App Store can select the Photos Library folder...so I'm not sure what to do. Also, are other people having this problem? How did Apple let this happen?Fastest solution: restore from back up from prior to when this happened.
This can happen if the HD icon or a system folder is inadvertently dragged to the iPhoto icon on Window. -
Duplicate bookmarks in PDF created from Framemaker 8
Hello,
I'm working on some legacy content using Framemaker 8 p266. Every time I create a PDF, I get duplicate bookmarks. The first set is wrong, and the second set is formatted correctly and contains the right content.
For example, it basically looks like the PDF is grabbing all of the content from the Table of Contents page, and then listing the correct bookmarks (Section title, heading 1) after that.
I'm creating my PDF using the Save As PDF option. In the PDF Setup for Selected Files dialog, I do have the Generate PDF Booksmarks option enabled, "Bookmarks Expanded Through Level" is set to None, and in the Include Paragraphs field I have Appendix Title, Head 1, and Section Title.
I'm using Adobe Distiller XI, maybe that's my problem.
Any ideas? I would appreciate it.
SusanAre these duplicates side-by-side (e.g. A and then A again) or one after another (A, B, C... and then A, B, C...)?
If they're one set after another, FM picks up the list of paratags to include in the bookmarks list from the first file in the book, so if this doesn' contain everything, it might help to import the additional formats into that one. Then clear/remove the exisiting bookmarks and only add back the Titles and Heading1 bookmarks (check that the TOC ones remain in the Don't include list). -
TS4001 iCloud Syncs my Desktop Bookmark Bar items to my iOS Bookmark Menu, folders only
I have all of my bookmarks in Safari on my desktop (OS X 10.7.5) via the Bookmark BAR - I have them organized in folders for ease, and I like it that way.
When I use iCloud to sync Bookmarks to my iOS devices (iPad Retina and iPod Touch, latest iOS), the result is that I end up with a series of bookmark folders in the "Bookmark Menu (not the Bookmark Bar) that duplicates bookmarks and folders that I have on my iMac desktop in the Bookmark Bar.
Problem 1. I don't want them in the Bookmark Menu on my iOS devices, I want them in the Bookmark Bar so I can use them from the bar.
Problem 2. Even if I wanted to use what ends up on my iOS devices, I can't because none of the bookmarks in the folders are there, only a series of folders. The only actual bookmarks that are on my iOS devices are those that are not in folders - and again, those few are in the Bookmark Menu, not the Bookmark Bar.
Can anyone help with this?
iMac 27-inch, Mid 2011; 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 running OS X Lion 10.7.5
iPod Model PC544LL/A; version 6.1.3
iPad Model MD515LL/A; version 6.1.3So what you are saying is that if I save a url on my desktop Mac as a Boomark Bar item, it SHOULd sync to the Bookmark Bar on my iOS devices? That was the issue I was complaining about. It was not. Please confirm that because I am only assuming that from your last paragraph above.
As for the whole duplicate thing, from my searching the forums today I realize that is a common "issue" people are complaining about - that their bookmark bar items are also showing in the bookmark menu. I think that is what you were referring to.
So I did try your set of steps in your last paragraph above and they did not work. In fact, nothing seemed to sync except the test Boomark Bar folder addition I made on my iPad which synced to my iPod touch. Other than that, nothing else synced from my Desktop - neither in my Bookmark Bar or my Boomark Menu.
Posbily related - Unforntunately, becasue I was having this problem earlier and also had noticed the whole issue with the fact I had all of the same folders on my Desktop Bookmark Menu as I had in my Desktop Bar - I tried to solve that issue by deleting all of the items under my Bookmark Menu, and now I do not have anything in that folder except:
Recent Tags
Recently Bookmarked
Get Bookmark Add-ons
Feeds (folder with items in it)
Unsorted Bookmarks (folder empty)
Is that part of my problem now?
Thanks, -
TS4001 iCloud bookmark syncing just doesn't work.
I've tried all of the disconnect, purge, wait and merge scenarios on on this and other web platforms and iCloud still keeps causing my bookmarks to revert to a long obsolete setup from weeks ago. It's clear I'm not the only one with the problem. Anyone have a better idea?
I've disconnected the Mac and all of the other devices. I've deleted every folder and file I can find (including the bookmarks.plist in "Library/Safari" many times. I've waited days. I've reconnected and "merged" with iCloud. I've deleted all bookmark files on all other devices. Results are still the same - surprise! A return to an old set up.
I'm a Mac fan. I'm an Apple fan. But this is really frustrating - its EXACTLY the kind of thing that Apple shouldn't do.
MobileMe worked fine. What's going on?
More importantly, what can I do to fix it once and for all?
Is there a way to get to the bookmarks info in the cloud and clean it out?
Is there a way to not "merge" but REPLACE the iCloud bookmark info?Yup.. I had less trouble getting SN to work with icloud than I did Lion.
I just popped into the other conversation to say you can indeed use icloud with SN, but you have to have a basic knowledge of how to do things. Unfortunately some people want so much hand holding they just can't be helped.
I was just trying to ensure everyone knew YOU CAN DO THIS. I didn't intend having to train everyone on the basics of computing and using OSX.
Just showing a screen shot isn't going to assist anyone. There's more to it.
I note one individual says "it doesn't work" when I know full well it does". Many have done this and the evidence is all over the web.
One other person is afraid to screw up her machine by attemptoing anything. Why not use Carbon Copy Cloner and totally clone to a spare disk and then experiment away with the knowledge that the entire system could be brought back as original... in little more than a couple of minutes.?? But no.. "I'm afraid". They can't learn this way. Again, hand holding.
So if people don't want to research, learn, understand. and try without fear.... then I can't help them. -
Firefox has created thousands of bookmarks, sync is slow, FF is slow, FF freezes
I can't delete bookmarks by the traditional means since it freezes FF.
I need to mass delete these bookmarks AND I need to purge my new FF Sync account. How can I do that? The old sync allowed you to purch bookmarks in the cloud.
The large amount of bookmarks are all "Mozilla Firefox" folders. It's impossible to delete them all.
I use sync wth 3 computers (2 offices, 1 noteboook), 3 iOS and 1 Android device. It's a nightmare! This has helped a lot with a lot more resources. The add on I ultimately used successfully was the SQLite Manager. I went in and did a mass delete of all the duplicate bookmarks. There were over 10000 of them that caused problems with the freezing and synch. I could not use the "Show your bookmarks" button on FF because of the large number.
All of the duplicated bookmarks were "Mozilla Support" folders. I think there is a larger problem with sync. I have 3 computers and 4 devices that sync and I suspect that when there are updates, whether it's FF, Windows OS updates, re-installs or anything, the Places file grows over time. This problem became most apparent when moving to the new sync. Due to geography I couldn't put all my devices on the new sync simultaneously. Maybe it's something about the old and new sync when devices are split? Very strange. -
Finding duplicate bookmarks In Safari 5
After upgrading to Lion and iOS5, I get duplicate, triplicate, and so on numbers of the same bookmarks. Is there an easy way to find dupes in order to delete them. Since there is no way to sort bookmarks, I'm stuck. Help, someone.
I found two ways of sorting bookmarks:
Take one or more bookmark folders and drag them to your desktop. This puts them into Finder and automatically alphabetizes them. From here you can also delete duplicates, rearrange, etc. Since I had thousands of duplicates, this was ok but would take a long time.
2. I eventually found a little program, Bookmacster, for all osx versions and bought it after trying it and being delighted. It cost $22.95 and is worth every penny for someone with my problem. The website is: http://www.sheepsystems.com/products/bkmx/ The developer is helpful, too.
Since I'm no longer so ignorant about how iCloud works, the duplicating bookmarks problem shouldn't return. If it does at least I have Bookmacter to help. -
When I try to open a Pages document from iCloud, created on my iPad, I get message stating I need a newer version of Pages. When I go to app store all I get is "installed" when looking at pages app. my Macbook pro is up to date with all updates. Any ideas?
You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5/5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.1 sometimes can not open its own files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has not only managed to confuse all its users, but also itself.
Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewforum.php?f=22&sid=3527487677f0c 6fa05b6297cd00f8eb9&mforum=iworktipsntrick
Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

What are the best options for creating a PDF with bookmarks and a hyperlinked TOC?
What I'm interested in is whether or not there is an alternate process I could follow that would side step Word 2011's inability to export to PDF with bookmarks and hyperlinked TOCs. How do you create PDF documents with bookmarks and hyperlinked TOCs in your documents?
Some background:
In Word 2010 and 2013 for Windows (and I'm sure this applies to older versions as well), you can export documents to a PDF file format where the exported file will carry over the bookmarks and hyperlinked table of contents. Specifically, by making specific text headers, will appear in the final PDF file as bookmarks on the side (see image taken from Adobe's website).
Regarding the table of contents, using Word's built in Table of Contents feature successfully ports the ability to navigate to a specific section by clicking on its chapter in the table of contents to the finished PDF file.
I've read several forum discussions that say it's not possible to do this from Word 2011, so my current solution is to just finish all documents on a Windows machine (either with parallels or a separate computer). The alternate process flow of creating a word document, exporting it to PDF, then rehyperlinking everything in Acrobat is just too time consuming to consider.Hi, beejasaurus
I found a possible kluge from this discussion here
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1008480
Create the hyperlinks in Word, save the file
Open that file with Pages, export as PDF.
The links work from that PDF.
Note, I did not try this with TOC but it worked with hyperlinks embedded in the Word document -
Creating a PDF with Bookmarks using Excel
Hello All,
I've been attempting to find an means of producing a PDF document from an Excel workbook with the resulting PDF displaying a bookmark tree which included parent/child relationships. I am running Excel 2010 and Adobe Acrobat X Pro.
At present, I am saving the workbook as a PDF document and then opening the PDF in Adobe in order to create the bookmarks. The bookmarks are created using the "New Bookmarks From Structure" option in Adobe and then choosing "Worksheet" as the structure element. The bookmarks are displayed in a tree but there are no parent/child relationships within the tree. Each member of the tree simply listed as the worksheet names were.
My goal is to display each rollup entity and its various children. The parent and the child entities are all individual worksheets within the source workbook. I have not been able to figure out how to structure my Excel source to make this happen in Adobe. Can anyone offer any insight? Thanks in advance for your help!
JaredI've been looking for the same answer.
After I've enabled Acrobat on my Excel, and click preferences, then the whole programs crashes.
I found a couple of updates here http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=2611 which I am going to try out now... ifilter

How to remove thousands of duplicate emails in Apple Mail?
Hi everybody,
I know there are a couple of discussions on the web already about this issue, but I cannot find one that clearly answers my question or solves my problem.
I'm working on Lion with Mail version 5.1 and I have a Gmail-account. I have been messing around a bit with IMAP and POP to re-collect all my Gmail-mails into Apple Mail, but now I see that almost every email has 1 to 5 or even more duplicates.
I've tried Andreas Amann's "Remove Duplicates" script, but whatever Mailbox I check, it doesn't work with Lion (yet). I get this error:
There is another script I tried, the one from this page: http://hints.macworld.com/comment.php?mode=view&cid=115625
It just makes my computer freak out, so not OK.
A third script I found here: http://jollyroger.kicks-***.org/software/
I downloaded the "RemoveDuplicateMessages-Mail.zip"-file and installed it. It does say it finds and relocates duplicate mails from the Mailbox that is selected in Mail:
It relocates all the duplicates to a folder on my Desktop, called "Remove Duplicate Messages". I do find them there, but the mails in the selected Mailbox in Mail.app still show their duplicates! Even when I throw the files from the new folder on Desktop in the Trash and empty it, nothing changes. Not even after restarting Mail. Or my Mac.
So I'm still stuck with thousands of duplicates. Any help on this one?
Thanks a lot,
AlexanderI have found a very satisfactory solution to eliminating my duplicates in Apple Mail, which is to stop using it and switch to Thunderbird.
There's lots that I like better in Apple Mail, but Thunderbird is light-years more flexible in managing your email than is Apple Mail, because Thunderbird is an open platform with excellent Add-ons available, which include the nifty Remove Duplicate Messages: http://bit.ly/tbird-dups. It is stupid that Apple Mail hides duplicate messages in the background & won't allow users to search and destroy them. Frustrating!
As a prologue to that, you need the TB import export Add-on: http://bit.ly/tbirdimportexport
Managing my mail locally on my Mac was a huge project for me, involving integrating tens of thousands of emails. Mail was from gmail, yahoo, and many years of Outlook PST files.
Now that the project is complete, I'm very happy with Thunderbird to manage my email archives. Though I actually would prefer the Lion Apple Mail interface for day to day use, it just isn't flexible enough. -
Is there a way to merge or delete duplicate bookmarks?
I imported bookmarks and now I have duplicates. Is there a quick and easy way to merge or delete duplicate bookmarks, like there is with Contacts?
Open the Bookmarks section of your browser and delete the ones you do not need or want. I know of no macro commands that one can use to delete them.
