TS4006 What's to keep someone from just unchecking the "Find my mac" button?

There is no lock for the "Find my Mac" option, so what's to keep a person that steals my computer from just unchecking the box?

This issue here is on the Mac, not an iPhone pvonk.
I would sooner try to keep a thief from my data first which can also help keep them out of the settings. First steps is to set your Mac to not "Automatically Login" in System Preferences/Users and Groups/Login Options. There are also settings in Security & Privacy/General for requiring the User's password when the computer sleeps or enters a screen saver.
If they can't log in to your system they can't change settings. But you are correct in thinking there should be a lock in the iCloud Preferences Pane. Send Apple Feedback a note.  http://www.apple.com/feedback/

  • What if a thief unchecks the Find My Mac box in iCloud? Doesn't that make it useless?

Maybe I'm totally missing this, but if a thief grabs my macbook and quickly unchecks the Find My Mac box in the iCloud settings, doesn't that render it useless? I wasn't able to find a way to put a security setting on that section of preferences.

Requiring a passcode to turn off wouldn't be much use. Every electronic device needs a hardware reset function in case the software crashes badly.
So, even if you could prevent the power off in software (by requiring a passcode), you'd only need to perform a hardware reset to bypass it.

I just made the switch to mac. I am have installed all the new PS6 CC and bridge and I am now trying to add some presets to my  ACR but when I search for the folder to place them it is not there.  From what I researched it says it should be under camera library/application support/adobe/camera raw/settings but I can only get to library/application support/adobe/ and then there are two different camera raw options I have checked both and there are not settings folder. If anyone can help me please thanks

Apple most likely has the same poor taste that Microsoft does when it come to defaults.  Microsoft likes to hide things like  settings, preset, folders etc from normal users  think the dumb or something else.  If Apple also hide things you will have to  make some system setting changes that will allow Finder to do it job and find it for you.

  • Can I Keep Stage3D From Writing Into the Z-Buffer?

I want to render concealed objects and achieve a similar effect as the one shown in the link in Stage3D.
    Silhouette Effect in Torchlight 2
I already know how to do this theoretically. I have to draw the object twice:
    Once with normal settings and
once with a different depth sorting mode where only pixels that are behind rendered geometry are shown. Also, to prevent weird effects later on, these pixels can't be rendered into the depth buffer.
I can set the correct depth sorting mode in Stage3D with Context3DCompareMode.GREATER. Is it also possible to have Stage3D render pixels into the back buffer, but not the z buffer?  If I can't keep Stage3D from rendering to the depth buffer, the effect will look like this:
    Glitchy Silhoutte Effect

I do not know of any such option.
However, you could move the Dock to the left or right side of the screen, or even better "Hide" the Dock until mouse hits the edge of the screen where the Dock is positioned.

  • How do I keep iMessage from going to the upper right and out of sight?

Imessage in Mavericks at random, on sleep, and when minimized,  goes to upper right on the screen and I cant get it back. Even Mission control can not access it.  I have close iMessage and restart. How do I keep it from going to the upper right and out of sight?

    Hi,
I think a  Screen Shot will help.
Use the CMD+shift+4 and then decribe around the area when you see the cross hairs.
To Post here use the Camera icon in the reply screen and then select/navigate to the Screen Shot (normally on your Desktop) and select it.
Then use the Insert Image button.
I don't use Sleep so I can't speak to that.
Minimise should put it in the DOCK.
Do you mean coming out of Minimise ?
Actually where is your DOCK  (mine is at the bottom and I nearly forgot other people have it in different places)
If it is on the right is the Finder icon top of the icons ?
If the windows of an App are minimised then it does not appear in Mission Control (some of this is mixed with normal behaviour).

I lost my iphone in Guatemala City and just downloaded the Find My iPhone app to my MacBook Pro. How do I launch the app & locate my phone?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can only locate your device when it is logged into iCloud and 'Find My Phone' is enabled, additionally the device will need to be switched on and connected to a wifi or cellular network.
Unfortunately, you cannot activate iCloud or 'Find My Phone' remotely.
If the device is wiped by you or another, you may not be able to locate the device (although some have reported they can)

  • Could I still use the "find my mac"-app if I downgraded from OSX Lion to Snow Leopard?

In the beginning of 2012, I had the great misfortune of getting robbed and all my recording equipment was stolen, including my macbook pro 17" running on OSX Snow Leopard.  I was able to buy a new macbook, same as the old one, but with the OSX Lion.  It didn't take long before I noticed that it wasn't running as smooth as the previous OSX.  At first I thougt it was the hardware; Steve Jobs had just died and I thought the people at Apple felt like they could finally ditch the high standards that were once enforced upon them and go Windows on our *****.  But I soon learned it was the software.  After re-purchasing my recording-software and trying and failing to install it, time after time, I got to a point where I just wanted to smash the whole thing and throw it out the window...  Fortunately I managed to get a hold of myself.  Now, I still want to get rid of the osx Lion and downgrade, but I don't want to have my stuff stolen again at some point and then find out that not only will Apple not pay out the insurance I payed for, but also I can't find my macbook anywhere, because I don't have this stupid application anymore because I downgraded.  So, I was wondering if there's any chance to have the best of both worlds. (or the best of one world and then just the other/previous world)  The only thing that's good about Lion is the "find my mac"-app.  All the rest utterly ***** ***!!
    Sincerelly,
    a very disgruntled mac-user.

"Find my Mac" is an OS X Lion feature and is not available in Snow Leopard. So if you want Find My Mac in yor MacBook Pro you'll be stuck to OS X Lion.
I don't know what else to tell you other than consider buying Lo-Jack for laptops.
    Hope this helps!

  • I lost my iPad a year ago and i just found the find my iPhone app can i use it?

i lost my ipad a year ago i left it in my job's bathroom and some kids took it but i didnt realize that until the next day. I just saw the find my iphone app but i wasnt sure if i could use it even though i never downloaded it in my ipad ?

If you didn't have MobileMe or iCloud on the iPad, no. I'm pretty sure it's a setting, so it would need to be turned on. Also, there's the chance that it's been Restored, turned off, sold for candy, etc.

  • Keep files from first of the month for a year

We have a series of folders with subfolders that have logfiles in them. Each folder has new log files generated daily. However on occasion, a log file is not generated for a day or for a few days.
I want to keep the log file in each folder for the first of each month, or as close to the day as possible for a year and delete all files older than a year. I also want to delete all files in that folder that are not from the first of the month.
So, on August 30, 2014 Folder 1 may have log files from each day in August except for August 1. When I run my script on September 1, I want the folder to have files:
    August 02, 2014.log
    July 01, 2014.log
    June 01, 2014.log
If the first log file is August 5th, then I want to keep that one and delete the rest.
I currently have 30+ folders that get daily log files. It takes a long time to go into each folder, see which log is closest to the beginning of the month, delete the remaining files from that month, then find the log files from over a year ago and delete
    that one.
Ive tried a few iterations but, keep getting stuck. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Steve

    Hi Mike,
I have been looking at those.  One of the problems Ive had is with the date/time format.
    For instance, if I issue
    $testDate=$(Get-Date).addDays(-$(Get-Date).Day).addMonths(-3)
    $testdate gets set to Saturday, May 31, 2014 12:51:59
When I look for files based on 5/31/2014 it doesn't match because there are no files created at 12:51:59
Im not sure how to convert $testdate to date only and not time.  Saturday, May 31, 2014 12:51:59 PM

  • How can i restore a Previous session if someone has just opened the Firefox browser and closed it bfore I got on the same computer?

I had 2 lots of windows with multiple tabs thatI wanted to re-open the next timethe computer was on, but someone else was on the computer and opened firefox and now i can't restore my previous session of tabs in the 2 windows.

hello, can you go to the firefox ''menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information'', click on ''profile folder/show folder'' and close all firefox windows afterwards. a windows explorer window should open up - in there create a backup of all files starting with '''sessionstore'''. then inspect them and see if their modified date would match the session you're trying to restore, in which case you might paste the content of the file into a site like https://firefox-session-restore.herokuapp.com/
otherwise i fear you'll have to reconstruct those sites through your history ...

  • What dose it mean when ipod just blinks the apple symbal and wont charge

My ipod wont charge and now when on charger will just blink the Apple symbol

    Hi Julesvamc,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
When an iPod only shows an Apple logo, this usually means that the device needs to be restored.
You can find more information about this symptom, as well as step by step instructions for restoring an iPod at this page:
iPod only shows an Apple logo and doesn't start up - Apple Support
You may need to restore or update your iPod, iPod mini, or iPod nano by placing it in Disk Mode if only an Apple logo appears when you turn it on.
    All the best,
    Jeremy

  • Access Lightroom Catalogue from the finder? (Mac User)

Is it possible to access my Lightroom photos via the finder the same as you can in iPhoto & Aperture.
The online Software i use for work requires me to be able to upload photos selected via the finder and i want the changes I've made in Lightroom to apply.
    Many Thanks
    Mjw

Lightroom is a database. Only folders you choose to import will be managed. It’s best to ignore Finder and use the Lightroom Library entirely e.g. for moving, re-naming etc. Otherwise the links to the images on your hard drive can get corrupted.
All editing is non-destructive and is stored as metadata. So you need to export in order to see your editing. You can export multiple copies e.g. jpegs of any size and quality from your originals to a new folder or sub-folder. You can then upload directly from that new folder using Finder which will remain outside of Lightroom management, unless you choose to import it.
I upload jpegs to my website from Finder all the time. So I select a batch of photos in the LR Library (Cmd+A) to select all or (Cmd+Click) to select non-consecutive images and export them. I go to my new folder in Finder and complete the upload. I then delete the jpegs and the new folder. I don’t need to keep them as I know I can export fresh copies from LR at any time and I don’t need those images taking up hard disk space.
