TS4036 Restore bookmarks

I got up this morning and all my bookmarks in Safari are gone.  I know they are backed up in iCloud but, I don't know how to restore them?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Your bookmarks are synced on iCloud if you have selected Safari on System Preferences > iCloud, so it will keep the same bookmarks on all your devices. However, you can't restore older bookmarks

Can you see the old profile in your desktop?
Yes, enter in your profile folder, enter in bookmarks folder there are about 10 backups? Are they .json file? if yes go to Firefox '''Bookmarks''' >> '''Show all bookmarks''' >> '''Import and backup''' >> '''Restore''' >> '''Chose File''' then select one fo that json files
No, try go to your profile, maybe it still in Mozilla folder:

  • Trying to restore bookmarks and get error msg windows can't open places.sqlite file. also get same message when trying to open json files for prev sessions.

Ibelieve remote user deleted cache and now I have no bookmarks. I have tried to reset firefox and was unable to do so. I tried to restore bookmarks through the places sqlite file and windows cannot open the file. I went to old firefox file on desktop and tried to open a previous version of bookmarks and windows could not open file. I still have bookmark toolbar and a lot of my categories bookmarks but they are all empty. My plugins are still there Can you tell me where to direct windows to open sqlite of json files?

To experiment more safely, could you create a new Firefox profile? The new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder. If we get your bookmarks into the new profile successfully, you can create a backup and restore it in your regular profile.
Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):
    firefox.exe -P
Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.
Please do not delete anything in this dialog.
Click the Create Profile button, choose a name like TESTING, and skip the option to choose a folder. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.
If you have backups in the JSON format (e.g., bookmarks-2014...json) try to restore one to this TESTING profile. This article has the steps (you will need to use Choose File... to get to the backup):
[[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
Does that work and give you complete results?
If not, the next thing I would try is to drop in the places.sqlite file you have and see whether Firefox can read it properly.
First, open up a Windows Explorer window to this new profile folder. You can do that using either
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
    * Help menu > Troubleshooting Information
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button
Got the list of files? Okay, leaving that window open, switch back over to Firefox and Exit the browser, using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
    * File menu > Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup -- you will see the timestamps update in the profile folder, then rename '''places.sqlite''' to something like places.old and drop in the places.sqlite file you want to test.
Start Firefox back up again. Bookmarks?

  • Restore bookmarks after uninstall

Yesterday we changed internet service providers. They were unable to connect to the internet via firefox but were able to connect via firefox. We were advised to uninstall firefox and reinstall an updated version of it. It did not occur to us that all of the bookmarks would be erased. Is there a way we can recover this? I went throught the steps to "restore bookmarks but there are only "restores" for last night and today. Nothing previous. Is there any way we can recover the lost data on my mac? PLEASE?

    # bring up Trouble shooting information from the Help menu, or by typing '''about:support''' into the location bar then pressing Enter.
    # Click on the "Open Containing Folder" button on the report
    # note the folder name, then up up one directory level to "Profiles", do you see additional profile directories there and do you find the information you are looking for in one of them.

  • I restored bookmarks after resetting firefox. Now when i try to bookmark a page none of the restored folders show up. How do i fix this?

    detail is in the question

if you want to know where the folders you restored are placed they should be located in "all bookmarks" -> inside a folder called "restored bookmarks" or "backup"
you have to manually drag the folders out of there and place them where you want them to be. then navigate (as normal) to that folder to add bookmarks to them.
''i hope i'm understanding what you mean, but otherwise please explain it a bit more so that i can help you''

  • Cant restore bookmarks

As my laptop was playing up, I did a manual back up on bookmarks, stored everything on my external hard drive, and deleted and reinstalled OSX. Now when i go to restore my bookmarks as directed by the Firefox help guide, the following message comes up:
    Firefox
    Unsupported file type
Please can someone give me some suggestions?
    Many thanks,
    Jim

There is a clear distinction between importing bookmarks and restoring bookmarks.
Restore replaces all of your bookmarks and is from a bookmark backup file which has a .json file extension.
Import adds the bookmarks to the bottom of your Bookmarks Menu and is from a bookmarks file (HTML format). the HTML file is what is used to copy bookmarks from another browser and is the format that was originally used by most browsers for their actually bookmarks.
The places.sqlite file is the actual bookmarks and history file in Firefox, to use it you would have to replace your existing file in your profile while Firefox is down,
and you would have had to of saved it originally to your backup device when Firefox was down.
So what is the filename of the backup and how did you create it, or copy it from your old system. Manually is not really enough of a description. Was Firefox down when you backed up the file.

how do i restore bookmarks on my macbook

Two or more users are synchronizing Safari with iCloud while signed in with the same Apple ID. At least one should sign out of iCloud in its preference pane and sign in with a different ID. If you want to keep sharing the same ID, uncheck the box marked Safari in the preference pane.

  • I've just upgraded Firefox and lost all my bookmarks. None of the suggested "fixes" brings them back. I only have one profile, but cannot restore bookmarks following instructions given. What can I do?

Windows Vista. Have just installed Firefox 4.0
Have followed instructions on Restoring bookmark backups
No result (I think) - because show all bookmarks comes up empty (except for what I suppose are defaults)

Which files (settings) do you want to restore?
Did you find the Firefox Profile Folder in the Time Machine?
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder and see the currently used location:

  • I followed the instructions for restoring bookmarks from an older Firfox to a new one but it doesn't work.

I'm trying to get my old bookmarks installed with Firefox on a drive holding Win xp to Firfox installed on a different drive holding Win 7. I followed the backup and restore process in the Firefox help file but it doesn't work. Help will be appreciated because I have a slew of bookmarks that I would like to use with Win 7.

If you need to merge bookmarks then you need to export the bookmarks to an HTML file and import that file on the other computer.
Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Export HTML
Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML : "From File"

  • From profile backup: Restoring bookmarks, most visited pages and reading list

Using the firefox mobile extension "Copy Profile" I have saved a copy of my profile to the sd card. Now I would like to restore selectively:
    - bookmarks
    - history
    - reading mode saved pages
    - most visited pages
While restoring the relevant files (using root access on android) helped, I am suffering from these probems:
    - The order of the bookmarks is mixed up: I had ordered them with the desktop app. Where is this order stored?
    - The "most visited pages" appears to be a random selection from the history.
    Any ideas?

Solution was to copy the files mentioned here:
[[Recovering important data from an old profile]]
    And here:
[https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/950536 Extracting bookmarks from Android mozilla profile backup]
    Important:
The file ownership of all files copied back into the profile directory have to be adjusted. On my machine they defaulted to "root" owner which prevented firefox from accessing them.
