I get Intermittent black screens on my iMac 21.5 Mid 2011 os x 10.8.2, Help!

Try moving the com.apple.addressBook.plist to your Desktop and start Contacts.
To get there, hold down the Option key and select Library from the Go menu in Finder. Then, navigate to Preferences folder.

  • TS4088 MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012): Intermittent black screen

My new MacBook Pro is running Mountain Lion and the screen suddenly goes black while I am working. It seems that the machine is running, but the screen just goes black and does not show the login box or anything else.
In order to get back to the login, I either have to restart it, or close the machine and open it again.
This seems to be the same problem reported for the MacBook Pro 2010-2011.
TS4088: MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video).
Any idea on what is going on??

I too have started having this problem. I am running OSX 10.9.4. Has anyone gotten any answers to why this may be happening? This issue just recently started. I can't say it was caused by any recent update.

  • IMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) Constantly Crashing to Black Screen, Has Troubles Rebooting

I have an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) with a 3.4 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, and AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB of memory.
Every day since Tuesday, the computer has been randomly crashing once or twice a day to a black screen. It doesn't matter what I am doing (surfing the web in Safari, listening to music in iTunes, etc). If there is music playing, I will get a constant stutter of audio in addition to the black screen.
When restarting the computer, it instantly goes back to either a black or gray screen after the Apple logo passes. Attempting to reset the PRAM or SMC does not fix the issue from reoccuring and I usually have to keep the computer unplugged for an extended period of time before I can get it back up and running. Sometimes I have to boot the computer up into AHT (Apple Hardware Test) or Internet Recovery to get the computer running back to normal.
When running both a normal or extended AHT, all of the hardware that is tested ends up passing. When running Disk Utility, it shows there are no hard drive related issues.
The question that I have is this an issue related to the AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card?
Back in March, my iMac's display began suffering issues with greyish smudge marks behind the glass alongside issues where it would freeze and become distorted alongside the black screen. When I brought it into an Apple Authorized Service Provider back in March of this year to have everything checked out, they replaced the display and nothing else as they could not replicate any of the graphical issues despite numerous calls to AppleCare. I ended up doing an erase and install of Mavericks and the 10.9.2 update ended up being a temporary fix for the issue.
Should I call back AppleCare and tell them I need my video card replaced or is it something else?

  • Late 2007 MacBook Pro intermittent black screen

I have this very odd issue with an intermittent black screen on a late 2007 MacBook Pro (4GB/320GB 7200rpm) Mac OS X 10.6.8 v1.1
Apologies for the length of the post.
In cycles separated by a few days to a week, the screen will flicker to black, initially very briefly, then for longer periods until it is black continuously, where it stays from a few hours to a couple of days then it flickers to normal, again very briefly then with longer intervals until it is steady and normal. It can then be fine for a week or more.
When the screen is working, it's perfect; no lines, stripes, colour shift or any difference to what one would expect. When it is black, the backlight is still operational (and dimming when on battery power) but there is no image - all pixels are solid black. Shining a torch on/through the screen does not reveal any image. When mirrored, the external monitor shows the brightness adjustment moving up and down in response to the key presses but it has no effect on the internal screen.
My external display (Eizo) is always functional no matter what the built-in one is doing and is completely solid at all times.
There is no correlation to temperature (I have SMC fan control), sleep, restart, fan speed, power source or anything environmental. The MacBook is on a fan stand for most of the time. External connections make no difference. If the fault is present before changing any of these factors, it is there after.
I am aware that this machine has known vulnerabilities with GPU and display issues but none present quite like this. I have performed the usual trawl on the net and I now know more than I ever wanted to about attempts to fix it.
    Software remedies attempted:
    Resetting PRAM and power manager.
No sleep image file (never used this option). I deleted the old swap files that were there in any case but this unsurprisingly did nothing.
Resetting the display settings via keyboard commands or Sys Prefs.
Screen savers and settings are not implicated.
Nothing whatever in the console logs that I can see.
TechTool Pro gives video RAM a clean bill of health and all other components pass including tests on the HD with TTP and DiskWarrior.
Safe boot and booting from systems on backups seem to have no effect but one safe boot restored the screen briefly - I think it was a coincidence.
I updated the OS from 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 while this fault was coming and going and it made no difference. I usually prepare the machine for updates by running the cron jobs, repairing permissions etc.
In expectation of suffering this fault when the external monitor was not connected, I installed iScreen on the MacBook and use my iPad as a supplementary display and that works well too. Having all three operating, when the internal is functioning, is quite fun.
    Hardware tests:
I removed the upper plate holding the keyboard and the interior of the machine was very clean with only some small dust accumulations in the fans, which were removed. There was no sign of any discolouration, corrosion, or other unpleasantness on the PCBs. All connectors and wiring looked good.
Every part of the logic board, cables and connectors were percussed, gently deflected and spray freezed, both while the fault was present and not (machine running) with no effect.
Display back was removed and the LCD board given the same treatment. No changes.
Display cable disconnected at both ends and tested for continuity (probe resistance accounted for) and consistency with a Fluke 87 multimeter - passed OK. On a scope, active signals and power were present on all the pins when the display was working but the fault did not occur during this test, which might have been interesting.
No apparent shorting of the display cable but without removing it this cannot be proved.
Problem not affected by hinge position, pressure on any part of the display, twisting, percussing etc.
Used compressed air to blow out the connectors which were reseated carefully.
After all this, the machine remains in exactly the same state, cycling between operational and black with various flickering stages as it comes and goes.
All I can deduce is that as the external monitor has always been OK, the GPU itself is probably working fine and the fault is more likely in the LCD panel electronics. I doesn't feel like a software issue to me but heck, I don't know what is going on.
Does anyone have any experience of something like this?
    Thanks,
    Joel.

    Thomas,
Thanks for your post and I'm sorry you have suffered the same problems.
My trust levels are not very high because it's clear there is some systemic display problem with this model, which is why Apple are fixing them. As I mentioned, we have no idea if the replacement boards are any different to the originals. From your experience it would look like they are not and my suspicion is that it is very unlikely that Apple made a new batch of these logic boards a long time after the model was discontinued. If anyone has evidence to the contrary, I stand to be corrected.
As you say, the difference between our two faults appears to be that a physical deformation of some part of the machine does something with yours but never did with mine. At one point I felt that a short in the internal display cable seemed like the best explanation for the problem but it looks like it's more complex than that because of the behaviour of our external displays and subsequent strange booting behaviour.
If, as I have read, the soldering of the GPU was faulty and leads to progressive failure of the graphics sub-system, then all kinds of strange behaviours could arise and produce the intermittent problems we have seen. Micro-fractures of the chip interconnects would suggest that tiny movements might change the presentation of the fault. If soldering really is the issue, then keeping the machine as cool as possible will extend the life of the connections. Consequently mine will sit on a fan-stand for the rest of its days, which is no problem because it just had Win 7 installed on it and I don't want to be seen in public with it in that state ;-)
All we can conclude is that a logic board swap fixes the problem for some indeterminate period, so the problem is on that board. Whether it is a design fault with the NVIDIA chip itself or a manufacturing fault with the board is not clear but we can probably forget LCD panels, cables, sleep issues, power supplies and all the other peripheral issues unless there is yet another design issue that causes the GPU to fail.
Are you intending to present your machine to Apple for another go at a fix?

So it is quite obvious that Apple has fixed it well enough. Windows cant haddel hardware issue better.

You can have Apple replace the logic board, but it will be at your expense.  The free replacement program has ended.
As a band aid you may try the following:
    https://gfx.io/
This will allow you to run on only the integrated GPU.

  • Intermittant black screen

I've been getting an intermittant black screen. It's almost as if going to a hot corner for about 2 seconds and then moving the mouse. Most of the time I get the black screen I'm on the internet or playing solitare so I know the pointer is not in the hot corner. I've even turned the hot corners off to no avail. I've checked the dvi cable.
I'm using dvi port 1 with the little dvi extension to dvi cable that came with my 19 inch viewsonic.

Okay, I see alot of simular issues with a lot of different screens with both ati and nvidia cards so, I guess it's a problem with compatability. I don't see any complaining about flickering or blank screens with the apple monitor. Has anyone heard from Apple if there is a solution? I'm not about to dish out 600 bucks for the Apple monitor. Does anyone have a generic monitor that does not flicker?

I installed Mountain Lion in my IMac and now, some times, when I start up my mac it looks with a black screen and white text. I'm really worry about it, can somebody help me?

Don't worry, this is probably just Verbose Mode. It's perfectly harmless.  If you're not specifically invoking it, than it's probably down to an unwanted setting in NVRAM.  See this article on resetting NVRAM if it continues to bother you.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it says place the iPodin recovery mode use this prgram.
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

The Mac SuperDrive built into your Mac is the Optical drive.
    1. Insert your Windows DVD in Optical drive. Disconnect any external storage.
    2. Insert a USB2 Flash drive. This will be used to hold the BC drivers.
    3. Start BCA. Check the options to download software and Install Windows. You do not need to download Windows. The BCA will download the BC drivers to the USB.
    4. Partition your drive.
    5. You can see the Windows installer screens at https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/mac/5.0/help/#/bcmp173b3bf2.

  • Problem installing windows 7 on imac 27" i7 mid 2011

I myself have a 27" i5 mid 2010 model but a friend of mine recently got a 27'' i7 he wanted to instal windows 7 because he also uses other software aswell
Specs of his iMac 27'' :
    Thunderbolt
    HD Facetime Camera
    4gig of memory
    2gig videocard
    1T HDD
    OsX 10.7 Lion completly updated
Oke here is my and his story/problem:
I start bootcamp download the software i need too install bootcamp on windows 7 Ultimate.
After that i create a partition 200 gig for windows 7 Ultimate. i click on the button to start the install.
After the restart i press enter and the windows setup starts after some clicks i format the bootcamp partition as explained by apple in there support.
I click on install windows start to install after the first boot it wil compleet the install normally this wil install the drivers and you get normal resolution ect,
this doesn't happend. It keeps the big chunky resolution. so that tells me that the drivers aren't installed.
After windows compleets the installation it restarts does a video test, and brings us to the screen where you need to fill in your name and password then windows asked a few things and the world time ect, and when you click on done or compleet. Normally you will get something like this (Please wait a moment windows is preparing your desktop) instead of that the mac restarts, (but the windows dvd is still in the superdrive because you cant get it out) it asked me if i want to press a button to instal windows no i wont, so i wait it counts down so it wil start up windows. now here is the problem it doesnt startup to windows it hangs and does nothing.
I my self have a mid 2010 27'' i5 model and had a blank screen everytime i tryed to instal windows 7 ultimate, i learned that there was a download available where you can create a MBRFAT USB stick where you copy a .xml file and a driver map so windows got the right drivers for my model so it would install succefully, here a link http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3173 where i found it.
Is there something like this available for the
    iMac 27'' model mid 2011
    with a 2gig videocard
    Thunderbolt
    HD facetime camera
    4gig memory
    10.7 Lion
Any help or links would be nice

Oke we are still fighting with this after finished installing windows 7 hangs problem!
My question now is can this problem as mentiond above be caused by plugged in USB devices he also uses a world of warcraft mouse and a logitech keyboard G19 version that can be used with world of warcraft.
He also he got a Sitecom powered USB hub 10 port, and uses 2 WD elements external USB HDD 2Terra connected to the hub that uses 1 port on the mac the other 2 on the mac are the keyboard and mouse that he uses for world of warecraft and there is 1 left on the mac that he uses for his iphone or usb stick.
We are also looking for the new drivers for the i7 mid/late 2011 models so that have a AMD Radeon HD 6970M with 2 GB GDDR5 installed so windows can be installed correctly?
Thanks for any help on this matter..

  • The display brightness can't be adjusted in Windows 7 under Bootcamp 4, iMac 21.5 (mid 2011) with ATI Radion 6770M..

The display brightness of my iMac 21.5 (mid 2011, with ATI Radeon 6770M) can't be adjusted in Windows 7 installed under Bootcamp 4. I tried moving the brightness glider either with apple keyboard hotkeys (on-screen glider), or within Windows control panel brightness control (within the power option), but the brightness remains the same. I've had all software (Lion, bootcamp, windows 7) up to date. Please help. Thanks.

I posted a similar case to yours a month ago and it seems we're in a minority on the problem.  What I have learned over this month was that Bootcamp drivers version 4 (Designed around OS Lion) was a BIG part of my issue with the ATI video.  The new IMacs seems to require a customized by Apple Verion 3.2 or 3.3 to operate normally.   Sadly, it's not as easy as just backing off version 4 and going onto 3.2 and getting the video slider back.   You need to reload Windows and avoid Bootcamp 4.0 as it seems a piece of V4 gets stuck in Windows.  I'm putting this suggestion to practise this week, guess I'll have more to say later.

  • Frustratingly, since I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10, I too am having the worst problems with WiFi dropping out. I've never had this problem before on my iMac 27-inch mid 2011 model. Turning WiFi off and then back on again sometimes works. Help please.

Frustratingly, since I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10, I too am having the worst problems with WiFi dropping out. I've never had this problem before on my iMac 27-inch mid 2011 model. Turning WiFi off and then back on again sometimes works. Help please. I've already tried a lot of your suggested fixes, but without success. Why hasn't Apple Fixed this?

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.
    Step 4
Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences and unlock the settings, if necessary. Select the Power Adapter  tab, if there is one. Uncheck the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    if it's checked.
    Step 5
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 6
    In the Wi-Fi settings, select
              Advanced... ▹ TCP/IP ▹ Configure IPv6: Link-local
    Click OK and then Apply.
    Step 7
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 8
    Reset the PRAM.
    Step 9
Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    Step 10
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • IMac 21.5" - 'Mid 2011' - Lion - Option key problem

    Hello, I just bought an IMac 21.5" - 'Mid 2011' - Lion. It's wireless.
I'd like to start up the computer using an external HD. I know that I should hit the option key to present the choices.
This does not work from rebooting, it only functions when I turn off the machine, wait 20 seconds & hit the 'turn on' button again.
Also, I've noticed that if I go into the Apple Help menu & type 'Pram' nothing comes up. In an older MBP, also using Lion, I get a list of choices. I would also like to know if this normal behavior ?
    Thanks for any feedback.

I wasn't talking about zapping the pram; your solution to the 1st part of the problem was perfect - thanks again.
I was referring to the Apple Help system. I would like to know if it changed.
In my MBP when I type 'pram' in the help area, I get a list of topics. In the new IMac, nothing comes up !
