TS4088 MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

Since making upgrades from Snow Leopard to current Mountian Lion, I have had numerous panic shutdowns.  Took to Genius folks and tests did not reveal obvious problems.  I reinstalled Mountain Lion and shutdowns stopped...for one day.  Now they are getting more frequent...even at bootup.  This is my last ditch effort to find out a solution before I take it back.

That article is outlining a hardware failure of the GPU, which will ultimately show itself in any version of the OS. 10.9 can't fix that problem. I know, I had the issue. The only fix is a motherboard swap. What you can do is force it to the built in Intel graphics and hide the problem, although you lose the speed of your discrete graphics card that way. Use gxfstatus and force to Intel.

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) intermittent black screen or loss of video. Can I still get this problem resolve by Apple or I'm screwed because the MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) intermittent black screen or loss of video Quality Program has ended?

You can have Apple replace the logic board, but it will be at your expense.  The free replacement program has ended.
As a band aid you may try the following:
    https://gfx.io/
This will allow you to run on only the integrated GPU.
    Ciao.

  • HT1338 MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

    runing mac os x
    verison 10.7.4
    Macbook Pro (15- inch Mid 2010 )
issue Intermittent black screen or loss of video

    I had same problem.
After installing, respectively Mountain Lion and Lion, the same error came again in both instalations. I tryed to replace the hard disk, and installed again, but the same error came up.
BUT now have two days running with Windows 8 on it and it run perfectly. I installed from boot camp and has not opened OX again.
So it is quite obvious that Apple has fixed it well enough. Windows cant haddel hardware issue better.

  • HT203554 MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) intermittent black screen or loss of video Quality program has ended. I was unaware of the program in the first place, how do I go about correcting the issue now that the program has ended?

As the question states: I was unaware there was a program in place to correct the issue. Is it possible for me to correct the issue myself?

The gfx control app doesn't work either. Any idea what if the replacement logic board is also faulty?
I have never used this application but note what it says in the 'features' section:
If a logic board is replaced by Apple, it is warranted for 90 days in the MBP is out of the 1 year warrantee period or the 2 year additional Applecare term.
    Ciao.

  • SOLVED (for now) MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video

For MAC OS Snow Leopard 10.6.8
I downloaded the display driver update from apple support and it didn't fix the problem. I had to download gfxcardstatus-1.7.5 and change the driver to Intel Graphics instead nVidia (wich is the one that crashes the screen)
Hey, guys from apple, please solve the nVidia trouble.

The black screen issue on mine just started in September 2014.

  • TS4088 MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012): Intermittent black screen

My new MacBook Pro is running Mountain Lion and the screen suddenly goes black while I am working. It seems that the machine is running, but the screen just goes black and does not show the login box or anything else.
In order to get back to the login, I either have to restart it, or close the machine and open it again.
This seems to be the same problem reported for the MacBook Pro 2010-2011.
TS4088: MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video).
Any idea on what is going on??

I too have started having this problem. I am running OSX 10.9.4. Has anyone gotten any answers to why this may be happening? This issue just recently started. I can't say it was caused by any recent update.

  • MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) Crashes Every So Often

I've been having issues with my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) for several months now. I have Mountain Lion and every time I have several apps open it crashes and reboots. I took it to the Apple Store twice and both times they reinstalled the OS. I still have the problem. Here's the last report that was sent to Apple, please help:

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.

Put the HHD to sleep when possible, checked.
    Wake for network acces, checked.

  • MacBook Pro 15 inch Mid-2010 keeps randomly restarting

So, I got this Macbook back in August of 2010, and this random restart problem just started occuring after I updated to Mountain Lion. It usually occurs when I open up heavy usage applications, such as Photoshop, iMovie, iPhoto, FaceTime, etc. When I just solely decide to turn on my MacBook to just use Safari and iTunes, it never restarts, or it will once in a blue moon. Also read a page Apple posted about MacBook Pro 15 inch Mid-2010's having problems and that they would fix it free of charge, but I'm not sure if that relates to my problem? --link here --> http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4088
I tried resetting the SMC, and NVRAM/PRAM. Even verfied disk permissions and repaired on Disk Utility, nothing changed.
    Could anyone help?

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List   from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • Macbook Pro (17-inch, mid-2010, i5, stock config) freezing -- Nvidia issue?

    Hi there--
I have a fully stock-configured (no mods, no hard drive tweaks, etc.) Macbook Pro (17-inch, mid 2010, i5 model). It's only 3 months old. Running 10.6.4, everything updated and NO peripherals connected...
Anyhow, I was working at Starbucks yesterday morning and the system froze for no reason. Was doing semi-heavy workload with Photoshop CS5 and iTunes going and Safari downloading. Mouse would freeze in-place, iTunes starts stuttering in a loop. I waited, but system remained "frozen" -- only thing I can do at this point is shutdown via the power button.
I powered back up and system froze at the spinning progress indicator that you see on boot-up . I shutdown, powered back up... was able to work for about 10 minutes and same system freeze. I powered down for two hours, powered up, and same thing happened again.
*I've documented these freeze ups via video.* See my Youtube playlist, and the videos titled "crash" here (videos are encoded at 720p -- so click option for more clarity):
    http://www.youtube.com/viewplaylist?p=38CDEF9C98B96BCE
I've also screen capped the crash logs which make me think there is something wrong with the video components of this machine. A whole lotta "Nvidia" related language.
    *See screencaps here:*

Does anyone have experience analyzing crash logs, and can tell me what this might be about?
Took it to Genius Bar (Apple Store @ Beverly Center, Los Angeles) early yesterday evening. They were nice, but didn't offer any clear theories other than they think there is something wrong when the system switches from the Intel on-board graphics to the Nvidia graphics. They took the system from me and said they would "check it out for a couple days" and get back to me.
I'm frustrated because I run an extremely clean system (system has fresh OS install only a month ago), and not used to mysterious hardware issues hampering my workflow. Especially when I'm 90% done with updating my design portfolio and desperately need to get back to work!
PS - I tried the latest EFI update, and the issue was still happening after the update.
    Thanks.
    [email protected]

Your frustration is very understandable. It sounds like a hardware issue of some sort. The AHT does not test everything, so it will not necessarily find every possible hardware issue. Apple has a more sophisticated hardware test they can run, and often hardware issues may not show up until the machine is heated up. What they probably want to do is to try to reproduce the freeze and then run the test to see what is wrong.
You can run the cleanest system possible, and still be beset by a hardware problem, which can only be solved by replacing the faulty parts. Here's hoping that the Apple guys can discover what is wrong and fix it for you.
Hardware problems can be intermittent and hard to find. If they can't make it freeze and therefore don't find anything, then the next step would be to use it at the Apple Store until it freezes up and then give it to them to evaluate.
    Good luck!

  • Graphic Glitch - MacBook Pro, 15-inch, mid 2010

    Hey everyone,
    I have a MBP 15" mid 2010
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB
    HDD1 OCZ-VERTEX2  SSD 120GB
HHD2 (replacing optical drive) Seagate Momentus 2.5 inch XT ST95005620AS 500GB
I have a graphical glitch quite often, which consists of some on screen corruption that lasts for a few milliseconds - enough for me to see it, but rarely enough for me to actually take a screenshot of it. Last week I managed to finally take a screenshot of it, which is great, as I can finally show that I'm not crazy. Please see below.
I pretty much assume it will be a problem with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (which is usually in use all the time, since I use an external screen in addition to my mbp 15" one).
Now, because this is not a crash event I doubt there'll be any log about it (but I'm all ears).
Regarding it's consistency and frequency it's very hard to say... it does happen a lot throughout the day. I have tried not running programmes that I feel interact with graphics a lot (F.lux and gfxCardStatus) but to no avail.
Anyone has any experience with this or some advice for me?
    Thanks!

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • HT1237 Searching for an EFI Firmware update to enable Lion Internet Recovery on MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010)

    Hi All,
My Mid-2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch started having random kernel panics lately (more than 1 month of random kernel panics now), usually associated with request such as "open new tab in Safari" etc.
Since I installed 2x4GB RAM modules from Crucial when I bought my MBP (they are +- 2 years old now) and also exchanged my DVD-drive for an extra SSD that now runs the system (fully updated 10.7.4) I have a feeling that those kernel panics might be HW related.
I wanted to run Apple Hardware Test but found out that it is no longer supported on Lion. Since I don't have any optical drive to install AHT from (also I don't have the CDs with me atm), I found out that I can install an EFI Firmware update that enables internet-based (?) AHT.
At http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904# , the link from MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) links to MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.6 which is for Early 2010 models only and doesn't allow me to run the installation process. I'm looking for an EFI update to enable Apple Hardware Test on my Mid-2010 Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch.
Is there an update that can do this? Is there a wrong hyperlink on Apple page or am I searching for a wrong update?
Also, even though this should probably be in a separate topic, can anyone please point me to the right direction for a good Apple Kernel Panic how-to-read-those topic?
Thank you very much in advance.

    Hey Cris from London,
I would try out the recommended steps in the following link:
OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13895
Let us know if any of the steps within resolved the issue.
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
    Take care,

  • How to update a MacBook Pro 17 inch mid 2010 with SSD?

I know that this question probably been asked many times before, but i can't really find the answers to my specific questions.
I want to update my MacBook Pro 17 inch mid 2010 / 2,66-GHz Intel Core i7-processor, 8 GB memory, running latest Mavericks version (full specs: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP581?viewlocale=nl_NL) with a SSD (i think a 500GB) to speed up my MacBook Pro.
I have about 400GB of data, personal and work related (mostly design work) that is really important to me of course. I use 3 harddrives (one offsite) at the moment to backup everything using Time Machine which works great, because i always can fall back on it when i delete something accidentally.
The physical installation looks quite simple to do, but i have some questions about the entire procedure i hope someone can help me with:
Which SSD will fit in my Macbook Pro the best (specs)? What to look for?
And what about TRIM support to make SSD last longer, i heared that Apple default drives that come with the Mac will support TRIM, but what about any other SSDs on the market do support it and if so which ones?
There are different ways to do install SSD, but what is best procedure?
Clone HDD to SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner or restore from Time Machine?
Clean install with Bootable USB flash drive with Mavericks and restore from Time Machine?
Buy a USB enclosure for SSD and Clone HDD to SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner first and boot it to check and than install the drive?
Could anybody help me with this?
    Thank you.
    Krijn

Look here for the maximum memory for each MBP model:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/by_capability/actual-maximum-ram-capacity-of-mac s.html
The limit is given by the memory controller ("northbridge").
There are no thermal drawbacks expanding the memory to the maximum supported limit...
However, as explained, often Apple did specify an "official" maximum RAM amount which is in reality shorter than the real value, simply because, when the machine was launched, memory sticks of the proper size for giving maximum capacity were not available.
Apple never revises the specs after the launch...
But this did not happen in your case: the maximum memory for mid-2010 Core machines appears to be effectively just 8 Gb, form the page linked above...
Final remark: in my experience, the SSD counts much more than memory for speeding up a laptop! As you already have 8 Gb, there is little value to expand to 16Gb even if it was posisble. Better to invest the same money in a  larger SSD...
I expanded mine because it was equipped with just 4 Gb, and purchasing 16Gb Corsair was costing as 8 Gb Crucial. However, it was not a wise choice, those cheap Corsair memories were bad, the seller had to exchange both sticks...
If I could come back, it was better to spend more and buy Crucial memory sticks!

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 with Mavericks is very slow

    Hi everybody,
i have already seen this discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24018625#24018625) started by campitor and allegedly solved by arthur but only for campitor's concrete case and already closed. Therefore I have made the same checkup with Etrecheck (see below). It would be really great to solve this problem because I need my mac for work and I am getting really desperate: it's just too slow for effective working. I am really desperate and really thankful for any kind of hint or help that could bring back my machine to normal workable speed.
    cheers,
    Cris
