TS4387 Mail window views

Until very recently, when I selected "New Viewer WIndow" from the File menu, it would open a window to the right of the list of messages, that would show the entire text of the selected message. Very recently, when I select "New Viewer WIndow" from the File menu, it opens an entirely new window for Mail, that is identical to the one I already have, which is a 2-column layout with maiboxes in the left column, and a list of messages in the right column. Personally, I hate this layout and much prefer the 3-column format. I'm using Mail version 5.3 on an iMac. How do I fix this? I use OS 10.7.5

To get the 3 panel layout, move your cursor over to the extreme right of list of messages. When to turns to double arrows, drag it to the left.

  • Must resize Mail window to view some mail

I've been searching to see if anyone else has seen this problem, and if Apple is aware of it.
There have been occasions when mail does not completely appear in the mail window. I believe it is always with HTML imbedded in it, but it could be more than just that. A good example would be a recent confirmation of flight information from an airline.
The mail in the display window is always truncated, and there's little or no scroll indication (the blue scroller fills the scroll space). However, if I just resize mail (either smaller or larger), the scroller gets smaller and I can now scroll through the entire mail message.
Is this a known problem, or something I can correct through preferences?
    Thanks

I've seen similar problems reported before and troubleshooted one or two cases without success. I believe it's either a bug in Mail, or bad HTML code, or an encoding issue. Other symptoms are that the full contents appear when forwarding the message (which indicates it could be an encoding issue), or in the preview pane but not when displaying the message in a separate window (which indicates it could be a bug in Mail).

  • Every time I click a folder arrow to open...finder reframes my window view. And other finder problems

When using the finder windows sorted either by name or date modifed, when I click a folder arrow, the window reframes to the center (or some other spot) that means I need to scroll back to the folder. When I change an item in a folder when sorted by date modfied, it of course moves to the top, but my window view stays centered where I am, and I have to scroll to the top to find the folder I'm working on. Both situations have the feel of "what I'm working on just dissappeared". I have become used to it, but it is one of the things in Lion that I hate. Is there a workaround...a way to keep the finder window view where it is when I click the open folder arrow, or to reframe to the top if I make a folder change and have the sort set by date modifed?
Mail behaves in the same manner where the view of read and unread wildly scrolls itself when clicking an unread mail. I have tamed this by creating a smart mailbox of unread e-mail, but it seems to be some system wide preference for an unknown sort view that I would like to fix.
Also, when I choose the sort by label option in the finder window, all the red pops to the top, but then all the other labels are scattered and not sorted as a for instance...
Perhaps this is fixed in Mountain Lion?
    Thanks for any help.
I am preparing to upgrade to Mountain Lion this weekend, but if I have some system problem, I would like to resolve it before I go forward.

    Hello Josegued,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you may have a customized keyboard shortcut created. You can take a look at this article to see how to remove it.

  • I want two mail windows in Mail can i do this?

    Hi,
I have out of viewing space in my Mail window with my 3 ..mac email address and all the rules and smart folders I have created. I am about to start a small business and will have to have 3-5 non .mac email address. I would like to use OSX Mail to view those account on my computer but I do not want them to be in same window as my personal accounts. Can I create another Mail window for this. If not is there another good mail software program I can use on my mac to keep the business and personal emails separate? Thanks

  • Main Mail window missing

I can not recall having done any upgrdes or installs at the time of this occurence. When launching mail the main mail window of the app. does not apear. It is listed in the menu's but will not show up when selected. I backed up my messages and deleted all the mail and still nothing. Next I reinstalled the Mail app. package, nothing. Finally I did an arcive and install of 10.4, nothing. I have the same accounts on my PBG4 and there is nothing wrong with it, there were 2000 emails in the combined 3 accounts and I have gottent that down to 400 but nothing has changed. Any thoughts or directions?

The position and size of the window is stored in the preferences file. If there is something wrong with the values stored there, that would explain the problem you’re experiencing. Proceed as follows:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
    5. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
    6. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
    7. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • HT5361 My Mail window will not open.

My mail window is not opening. The bar at the top pops open, but nothing else comes up and I have to restart my laptop to close it.

Have you tried File/New Viewer Window?
Will it Force Quit under the  menu or command - option - esc?
After the admin accout (above),  try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Stop Icon Bouncing When Mail is Viewed

I have a rule set to get the Mail icon bouncing when I get new mail. Is there a way to get the bouncing to automatically stop once I've viewed the new message, or even once I've clicked on the mail window?
If there's not an automatic way to do it, is there a key stoke I can use to get it to stop bouncing without having to move the mouse over and click on it?
Thanks in advance for the help.

There is no keyboard short cut for this one apparently.

  • Mail window pane vanished - how to bring back?

    In Mail,
When in the Inbox, there is usually a small list of emails (sent to me that perhaps i haven't read) at the top and if I click any of them I get the preview or email in text at bottom of screen below it (divided by a line).
My wife was reading emails and scrolling down on the right, and somehow Mail quickly set itself to only have the emails (sent to me) only appear and now i have to double click any single email to see the email (which pops up in a new window).
In other words, I believe the technical way to explain it is that the window pain on the bottom is no longer there. How do I bring it back to the way it use to act - do I need to selecting something from the "view" menu at the top?

    Hello,
There is a spot in the middle of the bar at the bottom of the Mail window that is used to hide or reveal, or dragged to resize the message preview pane. Depending on your display resolution, you can see that this spot is actually multiple lines.
Although not fully applicable to Mail 2.x and OSX 10.4, the following support document does provide a picture of this spot on the separator bar (which now you have at the bottom):

This same out-of-date article is found as a link in the current Mail Help if you search with Preview Pane.

  • Password-protected PDFs making mail blank view of messages?

Surreal problem that seems to have started about the same time as my 10.8.4 update (from 10.8.3):
Viewing the standard Mail view, with mailboxes on the left, message list for the selected mailbox in the middle, and message text in the largest pane on the right of the window; when moving through the list of messages, moving down and seeing the message texts to the right, all of a sudden, the preview pane to the right go BLANK.  And I've narrowed it down to several suspect messages that came from a regular group of business contacts who send me reports as password-protected PDFs.  I prepared a test PDF with Preview, encrypted, and used that to test the proposition that password-protected PDFs are what is 'breaking' the view of message contents in the right hand window, and it is clearly the problem.
After I view a message with the gray password-protected preview image showing in the preview pane, switching to another message in the message list, that next message shows a normal header but the text/body of the message shows blank.  And then the next messages keep showing blank until I either:  hide and unhide the main mail window OR quit and reopen mail.  But double-clicking on any message in the list to open it properly in its own window shows it normally.
Rebuilding my mailboxes did not help.  Rebooting did not help.
Any ideas about what the heck might be going on?

I've had the same problem on 3 computers since updating them to 10.8.4
I don't think many will find this thread as most will search for threads relating to 10.8.4
It only happens to my mail after viewing a message that contains a password protected pdf.  If I don't open emails that contain the pdfs mail works perfectly, but once I've clicked on a message that contains a pdf every email turns blank.  Mac mail & POP accounts.  I can double-click the email to have it viewable in a new window but still can't open the pdfs. I get password protected pdfs regularly for work.
    They're standard drives, no partitioning.
I've tried the "sandbox" suggestion with no joy.  & I've also tried removing junk filtering which is a suggestion on another thread.
    I don't think I'm up to re-installing 10.8.3 so I've been using a browser for emails.

  • Cannot open Mail Window in Yosemite

I just updated to Yosemite. Almost everything is fine - except it is impossible to open a mail window. A brief flash of a narrow indow opens, then promptly dissappears. Mail is running, I get reports of incoming mail, I can open a compose window, but no viewer window.
My system is Mac Book pro, 15 inch, 2Ghz intel core i7, 8Gb, 1333 Mhz DDR3
Any ideas how to fix this - I basically have no mail!

I have a partial solution - but not a full fix....
I went to mail/preferences/viewing and ticked 'classic view'. I now get a classic view window, but whenever I try to change back to standard view the window shrinks and then disappears.
Annoying, but not as totally unusable as the previous situation!

  • Can't see main mail window???

Ok so I upgraded to Lion and I can launch mail and I can create and send new messages but the main mail window will never show. So I can't actually see any messages or folders or anything. I can get connectivity doctor window to show and everything connects and shows fine. If I do cmd+0 to show message viewer that won't show.
Any idea's on how I can get the main mail window to show up again?

    Hi Garrett,
Thanks for your post. This helped me where Applecare could not.
I had the same problem as you after migrating my system from Snow Leopard to Lion via a Timemachine back-up.
I suspected that your solution could help me, but unfortunately in Lion there is no longer a visible ~/Library in the home folder.
I noticed that there was a new and unexpected "folder" in the sidebar of the normal folder pain view. This object was a sprocket (like the one next to the inteligent folders in "Mail"). I klicked on it and got a search result of items from my missing "Mail" file structure as if I had used Spotlight to search for them. By going a few levels up the file path I was in the invisable ~/Library folder with the /Mail folder visible. I trashed the entire /V2 folder (which was a mistake because all of my old emails are now gone) and restarted "Mail". "Mail" is now working as expected.
    Thanks.
I hope that this may help enyone having this problem with a migration to Lion

  • Mail Window Changes Size

In using Mail 6.5, I notice that when I open messages to read them more fully rather than just preview, sometimes the window is reduced and moved to the lower left hand corner of the desktop.
I am not using the classic view for viewing emails in the inbox.
There have been other threads where this has been discussed, so not sure if there is a solution.  Any help is appreciated!

Thanks for the help.  I was able to use your suggestion, and quit Mail and then reopen, and the window opened as expected.
However, after I printed an email, the next email I opened, was small and in the lower left of the desktop. So I moved the window and resized and was able to quit mail, and when I opened again, mail window appeared as before.  After I printed again a message, I go the same issue  - window reduced and in lower left of desktop!
    Any other ideas?

  • Some emails not deleting or not showing up in my Mail window.

My Mail program is having many problems--Some emails will be deleted but show up again when I reopen my Mail window, I cannot see emails in my draft folder, and there are times when emails sent to me are not showing up in my Mail window. I've redownloaded the mail program using my Tiger disk three times, but it never solves the problem. I'm about to reload my whole Tiger software, but I'm afraid I'll lose my 10.4.7 updates.

OK. In order to fix the problem, we need to re-create the index. Problem is, Mail may or may not choke on those messages while re-creating the index, so either be prepared for it or perform the optional steps 1 and 3:
    1. (Optional, but recommended). Try to find in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/ the *.emlx files associated with the troublesome messages. Viewing the *.emlx files as List in the Finder showing the creation/modification date may help. Just identify them; do not get rid of them yet (you must quit Mail first).
    2. Quit Mail.
    3. (Optional, but recommended). If you found the troublesome *.emlx files in step 1, move them to the Trash.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
    5. Locate the Envelope Index file and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    6. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/. Locate Deleted Messages.mbox, and move it to the Trash. I assume there is nothing to be preserved there.
    7. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. Locate the *.mbox folder that corresponds to the mailbox you created to try to isolate the troublesome messages, and move it to the Trash. Again, I assume there is nothing to be preserved there.
    8. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be "imported". Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder.

  • The mail window has overlapping buttons/headers

the mail window has overlapping buttons/headers and there is an email that wont let me delete

The double arrows do have a blue background.  I have no doubt that I'm in Full Screen mode when they appear.  However, when I click on the double arrows I can view the Mail screen perfectly.  I assume clicking the double arrows exits Full Screen mode.  I have also clicked Exit Full Screen from the menu.  The issue is that my Mail app is very different from what it's typically like.  It now hides the Mail menu bar until I move the pointer to above the screen.  I cannot see any desk top from around the Mail screen and I cannot move the Mail screen at all.  Also, the display of a new mail message; either one created or one opened looks like a something in the Preview app looks like.  There is limited access to mail options and no option to Save as Draft.  Also, there are no expand, minimize, close buttons (green, yellow, and red buttons) on any Mail screen.
By the way, these issues began after I used Mirror Screen with my Apple TV.
