  • 5.1 sound requires $295 further purchase? You have GOT to be kidding!

So after forking out a fortune to purchase Adobe Production Premium, I discover that after all the hoopla, I cannot do 5.1 sound with SD output unless I spend a FURTHER $295! What a RIPOFF! That was never stated in any of the reviews or discussions about this product. I am VERY DISSATISFIED. All the advertising says '5.1 sound, no worries!' what a lie. Do I get a refund? Fat chance. This is, without the slightest doubt, the last Adobe package I will ever buy. Talk about misleading advertising.

Colin Brougham - I did plenty of reseach - for months. I even bought a computer specifically designed for CS 5.5 (although the phrase 'Adobe-certified card for capture and export to tape for SD/HD workflows' had everyone stumped, even my computer technician, as nowhere does Adobe list such 'certified' cards. Graphics cards, yes, but capture cards, no. I suspect it's a generic meaningless phrase that it tropped out if something doesn't work "well you should have got an Adobe-certified capture card" even though such a creature is never identified).
The fact that Premiere requires Surcode is never mentioned in any Adobe documentation - or review fo that matter. To say there are forum items on surcode is irrelevant if I am not informed that I need it in the first place. It could be called Fobbledanger for all I care. Nowhere does Adobe mention that it is required - and Adobe admits this in this thread.
'If you'd have asked that question here explicitly, you would have gotten the answer'
Again, how am I supposed to ask a question that I don't know is required? All Adobe stuff says it handles 5.1 fine. To say you can mix but omit that you can't export is misleading and to be honest, stupid.
'Prove that. 5.1 audio is supported for import,' Proven in this thread.
'I'd like to see the advertising that says that 5.1 is supported for export.' Interestingly enough, Adobe documentation says NOTHING about export - but some on, the company makes many claims for 5.1 mixing and compatibility - the ability to export is clearly implied. They don't even put an asterix on any of their pages.
One could take the view that this is deliberately misleading, as saying you can mix 5.1 but you simply cannot export it completely negates the purpose for which you are mixing. It is no different to advertising a colour TV that can receive colour transmission, no worries, it just shows in black and white (unless you get a $300 add-on).
So all your queries are answered and proven.
John T Smith - 'You might go here, with your links, and tell them what SHOULD be on those pages'
Thanks for you comment, and if Adobe wants to pay me $110 an hour I'd be happy to rewrite their material for them, however until that time it's not my business to do their work for them (especially as this seems to be deliberate, so they'll ignore me anywat).
One could take the view that should someone be of the mind to initiate a class action against such deliberate misleading behaviour, not only would it win hands down but should someone be of a mind to do so one could take the view that many people would be of a mind to join it.
All I want is to be able to export in 5.1 in any mode I choose which is clearly implied in all Adobe's advertising material. How about it, Adobe?

  • You have GOT to be kidding me - GLOSSY?

Is anyone else as outraged as I am about the glossy screens on the new MacBooks? This is an otherwise PERFECT machine with lots of new features, and Apple's decision to use a glossy screen will have me scratching my head for quite some time. Wow.
Unless you are constantly using the new MacBook under low-light conditions (ok, pretty much darkness), the amount of glare that occurs on these glossy displays is UNbelievable. Forget watching a DVD or editing photos under normal lighting conditions. However, it's perfect if you want to fix your hair while checking your email.
Hey Apple, how about the OPTION of glossy and matte? I am a huge fan of this company, its software and hardware. I promote them all the time to my friends, family and colleagues. But I have to say this was a really, really bad decision to go glossy-only on this new line. I am disappointed.
What's next, the MacBook Pros and Apple displays going to glossy screens? We really NEED to have an option here. I'm not trying to start a flame here on this board, but I really hope Apple re-thinks this decision.
    G5 Dual 1.8 / AluBook 1.67 / PM 933   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It's a different story when you're viewing the screen
at an angle and this is one of the issues when a
sales person is showing you all the new features and
you're standing to one side. If I turn the laptop at
an angle I can see a lot of reflections.
I'm glad you brought this up. I promise I'll shutup for a while after this.
So, let's say I have a client come by to check out some clips, some photos, a new database screen, whatever. She pulls up a seat next to me to review and discuss the project, and I'm driving. Right now on my non-glossy laptop screen, this isn't a problem, because -
We have a WIDE ANGLE OF VIEW on a matte screen...
So on a glossy screen, I'm now forced to mirror out to another monitor or projector. Or, use / buy a non-glossy laptop. Or, let the client sit in my lap (not very professional).
Just illustrating some real-world scenarios. And I'm sure the "well just by a Pro model" answer will come up, but to me that is not a valid or helpful suggestion. What if for my next laptop I want a compact black 13" MacBook, and not a [more expensive, larger] Pro model?
We need to be offered a CHOICE, that's all I ask.

  • "You have GOT to be KIDDING ME!"

Alright so recently i received a Brand new 13 inch 2.0 Ghz Mac Book. Just finished work and was on it right before i left.
I had installed the " Microsoft Office 2008 Mac edition" on my laptop and it had installed somewhat of an Update earlier that i had cancelled about half way or so.
I got home, turned it on, and now .. OF COURCE.. its showing me the blues....

    !@#$ you mac.
i just wanna use my wacom tablet..
    can someone please help me?
    I tried restarting it..
Letting it sit for a while..
taking the battery out, holding the power button, putting it back in..
i dunno what else to do..
    An unsatisfied new mac user..

Simplest thing to do, since the machine's new, is to use the disks that came with the machine and restore it to the factory specs. The manuals that came with the machine should describe the procedure. Other info is at http://www.apple.com/support/leopard/install/.
Once you've restored the software and gone through the setup again, get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire), and make a bootable backup/clone before updating, upgrading, or installing other software and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:

  • Ok, you have got to be kidding

Since I can't use KXProject in Vista64, I'm stuck with the a certain bloated piece of crap they call Creative drivers. What I need to know is, is there a way to route the center channel to push out the same stereo signal as the regular 2. speaker out(green jack)? I want to connect my headphones like I do with KXProject, which also allows me to control the volume individually on the speakers and the headphones, is this a lost cause?
Is there no easy way to do this? Does Creative want me to buy that front panel crap just to use my headphones and speakers at the same time? Honest to Peter Griffin, if this is the case, I would take the Audigy2Zs out my computer and tell them to shove it up their ass.
The only saving grace for Creative is KXProject, I'm hoping that dude comes out with 64bit drivers.

One thing you can try: set Windows to 2-channel and Creative to 4-channel, then use front for speakers and rear for headphones (or vice versa). Then enable front-to-rear cloning -- I don't remember where that setting is.

  • You've got to be kidding me? SR 10697418951

    Hello,
I've got a customer who has a problem with CIFS on an oes2 cluster. We opened up a SR and sent the Tech Support several configuration files and the load.out & unload.out log files. This is the answer we got:
"With regards to Service Request 10697418951 (CIFS on cluster resource comatose)
The file shows that the add secondary IP address for 139.64.221.215 was done. Then a ping to that address was done and there was no reply. Then there was an ARP for that address that also failed. So it appears that the IP binding of that address failed. That would cause the ncpcon bind of the resource name to the IP address to also fail which would explain why the resource went comatose. So we have to try to figure out why the IP binding failed that day. If it ever works, then it was likely that this particular time there was a problem with the driver loading or the NIC not being available, etc. I hope this is what you were looking for.
    Best Regards,"
Of course I'm not going to show any names. You have got to be kidding me? The Tech Support individual obviously had / has no idea how a cluster works. The resource has to ping the address and ARP it before it can bind it. Just makes sense... Now, this is the answer that I helped the customer write:
" Thank you for your prompt reply.
The Ping for the add secondary IP address is a standard procedure when the cluster adds the secondary IP address. It pings the address first to make sure that it is available. If the ping returns an answer (so successful) then the cluster resource will go comatose, because the address is already assigned. As far as I know this is standard operating procedure for all cluster resources. My other cluster resources also do this and do not get an answer and therefore do not go comatose. This cannot be our problem. The ARPing falls under the same category. This cannot be our problem.
As was stated in the original call that when we load a cluster resource without the CIFS protocoll enabled it has no problems and we can then perfom the novcifs --add command manually and it is successful. When we activate the CIFS protocoll within the cluster resource (iMgr) and take the resource offline then online it goes comatose. The resource was originally created with OES2 sp1, therefore we've used the cifsPool.py scripts. Both of them give us the INVALID_DN_SYNTAX error. We have a test cluster that was installed with SP3 and when we activate CIFS for an existing cluster resource we have a similar problem. When we activate CIFS directly when creating a resource it works. This is a known problem with cluster resources that were created before OES2 sp2. As stated I believe that the cifsPool.py scripts still have a problem, that or sp3 has a problem (INVALID_DN_SYNTAX error). Please note what I said relating to creating an SP3 cluster resource w/o CIFS activiated and then activiating it.
Thank you for your assistance and if you need more information or files please contact me asap.
    Sincerely,"
Now, I do not want to be rude but WTF? The customer is already REALLY upset with Novell because we implemented oes2 SP3 in order to setup CIFS and it caused his cluster to regularly die (SR 10687567801). The solution to that was available 2 months later, eDirectory 8.8 sp6 Patch2 from April 22, 2011. The customer is not very happy....
I've worked professionaly with Novell products since 1989. What is going on? And what is going on with the open SR relating to CIFS? Is it possible to get help from someone that actually knows the products involved? No offense intended...
Thank you for any assistance you are able to provide. IMO moving your Support was a mistake.
    Mike.

    Hi Mike,
I apologize for the delay on responding here in this forum. I did take action the same day this came through with the frontline engineer involved. From what it looks like, there may have been some miscommunication with the backline team on this as a clustered environment.
You're welcome to follow up with me directly if needed through the SR. I have since seen multiple updates from our team. Please let me know if there is more we can do.
    Best regards,
    Brian Armstrong

  • Xi Fi Xtreme Music - You've got to be kidding m

I had the beta version of VISTA with a soundblaster li've card in my PC, I bought the Xi-Fi Xtreme Music Card?last month?for one purpose and hoping it would work with the FULL VERSION OF?VISTA. To enhance the quality of recording my music. Now with?VISTA,? its all messed up, still the same problem with?the li've card that the VISTA beta gave me. The?driver you have to download on here is not complete, sound stutters.. Mp3's crackle.... I can't record my music properly now. I? had to reinstall my Windows XP MCE,?and in?limbo with a copy VISTA home that I can't use properly.
You've got to be kidding me that I just wasted my money on?a new sound card,?that is not even ready for VISTA when it was released within the past month!!.. Wasn't the company atleast given a HEADS UP, so you would be READY with your hardware for VISTA?..
I am very confused and a bit pissed at the moment, can someone PLEASE let me know what is going on. Or when this problem is going to be FIXED!!..

Have you read the stickies on Windows Vista compatibility? Final drivers for the X-fi will be out in a few weeks it looks like. Meanwhile, if you're doing any mission-critical activities on your computer, you don't have any business using Vista just yet. I mean, most companies won't even switch to Vista for a year or more. There are going to be all kinds of issues when a new OS is released. I wish people would understand that before wigging out in the forums. I'm using my X-fi fatality pro series in Vista Ultimate and yes I miss the console launcher, working ac3 passthrough through spdif, and all the other stuff. But maybe I'm lucky in that my digital out works and EAX seems to work fine in BF242.
The point is, I knew going into the upgrade that some things wouldn't work or work properly for a little while. So no, nobody is kidding you. Just stick with Win XP until official drivers are up for all your hardware. Vista isn't going anywhere so I suggest you relax.

  • White spotting on MBP - You've got to be kidding me

    All,
I have a week 11 MBP that I received as a system replacement for a PB G4 that had to be sent back 4 times for white spotting on my LCD. I was grateful to Apple for approving this exchange for me and have been mostly happy with my MBP.
Well, much to my dismay, I woke up this morning to what looks like white spotting on my MBP - You've got to be kidding me! It's strange, but just to the center-left and center-right of my LCD are a series of white spots in perfect circles. I can see six of them right now. They are about 1/4 inch in diameter and very noticeable with all background colors.
I absolutely cannot believe this - I am VERY frustrated with this. Has anyone else noticed this?
    - JB

Richard, I agree with what you are saying in terms of outsourcing. I agree with you that it is a "Quality Control" issue. It is good to keep in mind that until the mid 70's Japanese made goods were also like how we perceive the Chinese ones today. And just remember how bad the craftsmanship were within GM cars made in the States in the late 80's and Mercedes made in Germany in the 90's.. Companies do take notice of consumer complaints and get their act together in the end.. Sadly we are on the recieving end of this right now and acting like the guinea pigs, I guess it is the price to pay sometimes when being the first to test new technology. Having said that I have all the faith in Apple to resolve the issues and support us with all the concerns. I had to replace mine too and the current one has the CPU whine but I am getting around it with temp. fixes until something solid is announced.. Kind regards

How do I copy music from an old iPod?  Why do you have to make things so difficult?  These are my files that I paid for but once I put them on your devices, I no longer have control over them.  I've wasted so much time on these stupid problems.  I used to be able to do this until you "improved" things.

Thanks, Deggie. I thought Apple would see my feedback.  I would just like to know if there is a simple way to copy just a few music files from an old iPod.  I saw instructions on how to copy all of them from the iPod but it was complicated and I really didn't want to copy all the songs.  I guess I could delete all the songs but the ones I want to copy then go through that process again.  Do you know how to back up music to my computer?  I don't want to have to go through this again and possibly lose music.

  • Including rhis one, you have autorized one computer out of your available 4 , what is that mean?

including rhis one, you have autorized one computer out of your available 4 , what is that mean?

It means you had four of your five total authorizations available, and you have now used one more. You now have three left. You have two authorized computers.

  • It just works... You've got to be kidding

The following is an example of how Apple really hasn’t got their Intel machines and OS right when it comes to the much advertised feature of also being able to run Windows. If you are not interested in running Windows on an Apple machine, you may as well skip what follows. However if you are, you may find the steps I had to take an interesting procedure in getting it right.
I recently upgraded my Boot Camp’d MBP (2009) from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and as a result Mountain Lion destroyed my second Windows partition. When I first installed Windows 7 (32bit) about three years ago while running Snow Leopard I had zero problems with the Boot Camp Assistant and the machine has operated flawlessly over the last 3 years.
My original intentions were to upgrade the Apple side of the machine in preparation for installing Windows 8.
The upgrade to Mountain Lion went smoothly enough (it ran overnight) and it was done when I started the next day. After briefly checking out some of the new features, I rebooted to Windows only to find after a couple of minutes that I no longer had my Drive D or data drive. It was just gone....
Like many Windows developers (and I would guess Apple developers as well) I’ve always split my data (my code) from the development tools I use. The main benefit is that Windows can simply be replaced (reformat, new version or reinstall of existing version) without ever have any concerns for the data drive.  The other benefit is that Drive D is the only drive that requires backup. Drive C only holds the operating system plus any programs that get installed. Obviously all those programs are available on CD/DVD or from the internet. However what is on the data drive is not so easily replaced and is only available from backup.
My last backup was about two days old, so the only choice I had at that point if I didn’t want to lose two days work was to use a low level recovery tool to find the missing data. I got the data back readily enough, but in doing so screwed up the Apple side of it.
As I was to later discover, it was the HD Recovery partition from Mountain Lion that destroyed my Windows partition.  How Apple can justify installing over an existing NTFS partition without any sort of warning to the user is incomprehensible and unprofessional.  The correct action would have been to skip the installation of the HD Recovery partition. If a partition is already occupied and there are no further partitions available, any operating system should respect an existing partition setup and take no further action. All the user would require is a message stating that the HD Recovery partition could not be created, because no partition was available, and therefore that feature would not be available. A recovery partition is not essential. Obviously it is nice to have, but prior versions of OSX such as Snow Leopard never had one and I doubt too many Apple users were too perturbed at the time.
Now I’d like to address the problems that were encountered during the reinstall. These are the problems I hit after a successful install of Snow Leopard.
The Mountain Lion download is removed immediately after the install and therefore there is no provision to make an installer for later use.
Mountain Lion is available from the App Store, however it is a hefty 5G download, therefore for those people with a slow or unreliable internet connection it is probably a very poor choice. Unfortunately you are not told before the installation starts that the OSX Mountain Lion Installation Application will be removed from your Application folder at the completion of the install. Obviously if you need to install it again, as I did, you need to download it again. Again I don’t follow Apple’s rationale with this. You purchase a product and then they take it away from you. I’m not even sure if that is legal. So the first suggestion is to make up an installer for a 8G USB memory stick before starting the Mountain Lion install. The internet is full of instructions for doing this, but most users will not go there until it is too late. However the easiest way is to download Lion DiskMaker from http://blog.gete.net/lion-diskmaker-us/ and make the installer with that.
Boot Camp Assistant failed to start the Windows 7 DVD, with a message “could not find boot disk”.
I suspected my MBP’s SuperDrive could be playing up because I could not get Boot Camp Assistant to use the drive to boot my Windows 7 disk after the partitioning step. The drive prior to the Mountain Lion upgrade appeared to be working; it was playing DVDs ok, but would not cooperate with the Windows 7 installation disk. The same disk would load fine on another MBP. I even had problems getting it to read the Snow Leopard disk which had only ever been used one time. After a Shift/Control/ Option/Power set of key strokes it at least read the Snow Leopard disk and I was able to install Snow Leopard and start the recovery process.
No provision within Boot Camp Assistant to make a USB installer or DVD from a Windows 7 ISO image.
Because of the alleged SuperDrive problems, I decided to download an ISO image of Windows 7 because I was aware that Boot Camp Assistant could make a Windows installer to a USB flash drive from the ISO image. However in my version of Boot Camp there was no provision on the page where I expected to find that option. I only had two options “Download the latest Windows 7 support software” and “Install Windows 7”. Where I expected to see the option “Create a Windows 7 install disk” I had a gap in the window where that option should have been.
Again the internet has a lot of advice on this topic. It would seem that some MBP models with a SuperDrive do have this option and others do not. Evidently all models without a SuperDrive do have the option. It can be enabled by adding two entries to the info.plist file inside the Contents folder of Boot Camp Assistant . There are two keys in info.plist that need to be modified DARequiredROMVersions and USBBootSupportedModels. The information for both keys can be obtained from System Information, you need the Boot ROM Version exactly as it is displayed and your Model Identifier without the comma as in the following example MBP52. According to some information I read, those key values should be added to the top of the array list although I can’t imagine why. I used Xcode to add the values and Xcode adds them to the top of the list anyway. Once those values are added to those two keys Boot Camp Assistant will add the option to create the USB installer from the Windows 7 ISO image.  After creating the installer, the Windows 7 install will then proceed as normal.
Once Windows 7 is installed the Boot Camp Windows support drivers failed to install Bluetooth via the AppleBluetoothInstaller.exe. Therefore there is no Bluetooth available after the Windows Support install.
Once Windows is installed and the Windows Support has been installed you will find that you still have no support for Bluetooth. There will be an entry in Device Manager with a yellow icon indicating that there is a problem with the “Bluetooth USB Host Controller”. This is not normally an entry you see in Device Manager.
If you watch carefully while the drivers are being installed you will notice that when Bluetooth starts to install, that the prompt disappears very quickly and the next item is immediately installed. It looks as though the Bluetooth install is just skipped.  When you actually manually run AppleBluetoothInstaller.exe you get to see the problem. The result from the installer is “Not needed – No device for update present”.
Again the fix is on the internet. The one I read was from a guy doing a Parallels install. The .inf file of the driver has to be modified. The Apple .inf file is missing a Hardware Identification ID. Once that identifier is added you can then run AppleBluetoothInstaller.exe and Bluetooth support will then be installed. I presume that the .inf file was changed in Boot Camp 5 as compared to the original .inf contained in whatever version of Boot Camp that was used in Snow Leopard or even Leopard, which I think was the OS on the machine when I first purchased it.
If you then check Device Manager you will see a perfect list, the Bluetooth USB Host Controller entry has disappeared. All Bluetooth radios are there and all Bluetooth devices then can be discovered normally.
    Creating the extra Windows partition
Of course at this point if you want to create an extra partition in Windows for your data drive as recommended above, you will first need to go back and boot to OSX and remove the HD Recovery partition. Do not create the extra partition in Windows before doing this. You will get a warning from Windows that you should not proceed, but if you do proceed you then have a Windows only machine with no hope of ever rebooting to OSX.
To remove the HD Recovery partition, you need to modify DiskUtility so that it has the Debugging Menu. With that menu item enabled you can see all hidden partitions and the HD Recovery partition can be erased and then removed with the partition manager.
After it has been removed you can then boot back to Windows and use the Windows Disk Management tools to shrink the existing Windows partition and then create the new partition. You will still see the 620 MB unallocated HD Recovery partition but because it is now unallocated Windows will allow you to create the new 4th partition without exceeding the 4 partition limit of a Basic disk partition.
As an aside I went through the same procedure with Windows 8 using the same support drivers although this time with the 64bit version. Unfortunately I still ran into a couple of problems. The Nvidia video drivers would not install and the same modification to AppleBluetoothInstaller.exe didn’t work for me. As the Bluetooth drivers are essential to the software I develop I decided to forgo Windows 8 until Apple release their updated Windows support drivers for Windows 8 which hopefully they will do soon.
However, I do have a friend with an MBP62 who has installed Windows 8 without any problems, so I’m interested to hear from anyone else how may have successfully installed Windows 8.

    Thanks,
I'll give those drivers a try the next time I install Windows 8. However I still don't understand how they would be any different to what is included in Boot Camp Assistant that came with Mountain Lion. Can you or anyone else confirm that they are different?
Can you also confirm that you have the Bluetooth radios in Device Manager and that you can discover Bluetooth devices under Windows.
Last question - do you run more than 1 partition in Windows?

  • Fcp to color how you have got color to work

Hi Guys I am having problems in getting the work flow with color to work and keep asking question on how to fix it , so i am thinking is there any body who would like to share how they got color to work and what setting you use, what formats ect. so we could get a list of working mac that every body can see. so please if you are up and running and your wrok flow works please tell me and all the other just how you have done it
    Thanks

    Hi Trevor,
    welcome here!
Maybe your message tells us more about some frustrations you have been experiencing rather than the actual technical glithces you have encountered.
Therefore, I start with a very symple reply.
When I need Color to grade my video (usually DVCPRO HD) I simply go to file>send to>Color.
I colour grade, render and send it back to FCP.
    Never had problems with that.
To use Color you may need (recommendable) dual core intel processor or higher, 4GB RAM or higher, X1900 graphics card, High Def. external monitor. An external or internal drive capable to let you edit on the fly.
I noticed that you are using Leopard.
Issues related to the new OS with FCPstudio2 are quite common and we are all taking notice of it.
Leopard was not specifically designed for FCP users so those and other issues were more or less predictable.
    Hope this helps!

  • Spellcheck based on keyboard layout? You have got ...

So I am a software developper in The Netherlands using Skype. Unfortunately I forgot to uncheck the automatic update thingy, which gives me the new version.
In this you have added some sort of auto-correct. Since my keyboard is VS International (needed for easy coding because of issues while typing ' with a Dutch layout), it is horrid. My language is set to Dutch, but somehow Skype seems to feel that the keyboardlayout determines what is typed. My Dutch text is automauled into something resembling english.
I can not turn this off, I can not configure this. Please fix it. At the very least make it possible for me to uncheck it.

What makes it extra horrible is that the options are THERE. I can set the skype language from the extra, language option in the chatwindow: but this is not he language used.
There is also a checkbox in the advanced settings: "Use spellcheck" but this is disabled and an extra text prompts me to disable spellcheck in my OS instead. It is utterly infuriating. Do you people not have any decent usability testers? Or are you just not listening to them?
I have reverted to the old version.

  • QUESTION: What is the fastest rate you have got for commercial invoices?

    Folks,
I am looking for inputs on high volume "invoice in a box" implementations. If you have achieved high volume shipping, with commercial invoices, I would like to hear from you.
    Thanks.
    Kannan

    Hi Kannan,
I have seen in one of my implemenation experiences that the client does shipping of approx 350-400 deliveries per day. They print 2 commercial invoices per delivery.
