  • Messed up Windows 8.1 install after using Boot Camp 4 drivers

Hey guys, I just finished successfully installing Windows 8.1 on my Mac with Lion. There were no issues there, but I royally screwed up the Windows partition after trying to install the Boot Camp support software from a USB flash drive. I didn't look into it enough and am now realizing (after the fact of course) that I needed Boot Camp 5.1 for support for Windows 8.1!
I realized that something was wrong when I tried to install the drivers and software from my Boot Camp 4.0.4 and I received a prompt on Windows telling me that it expected Windows 7 instead and then asked me to run in compatibility mode to see if that works. I stupidly clicked yes and then my Windows locked the screen on me. So of course, I unlocked it and the display is all messed up with my battery indicator at the top left, most of the screen is black and a small portion on the right side is not black. It instantly locks itself again. I can only repeat the process with no way to correct it (that I know of).
Is this install of Windows 8.1 salvageable? I am getting the new drivers from Boot Camp 5.1 now, but it won't help if I can't even get to the desktop for Windows. Help!

Right - this would be the easiest thing to do. Will I have issues the Windows license being activated again? I have actually never had to reinstall before so I have never had license issues.

    Hi,
Is it possilbe to install Windows 7 in an external drive using Boot Camp?  If yes, can you someone show me or direct me where I can find more info?
    Thanks a lot

    You're welcome anytime.
Microsoft doesn't make it easy sometimes
As for the harddisk it surely is possible.

  • Trouble restarting Mac OS after using Boot Camp

I am using Mac OSx 10.6.8 and have Windows 7 on my Boot Camp. In probably 90 percent of the times I restart my Mac OS side after using Boot Camp, my computer freezes during the startup. I usually get to my desktop screen but my desktop icons don't fully load and it freezes, or if I try and open an application in my dock, I get the spinning ball of death and I have to restart.
A co-worker suggested opening in safe mode and then going to my preferences file and looking for any .plist file that appears corrupted and then deleting it before restarting. That usually works except for the times I can't find anything that looks corrupted. Also, there are times when it starts up and my dock is back to the computer's default setup. Sometimes my clock gets set to a different time as well.
On occasion, I've sometimes restarted as many as a dozen times before things kick in correctly.
I don't have any applications in the startup menu. This thing just has major problems restarting after using Boot Camp. (I have a co-worker with the same exact issue). It's a pain when I am in a hurry after using Boot Camp.
I don't have privileges to run disk utility or do anything similar so before I take it into my IT folks, I'm wondering if this is an issue with anyone else and if there is another solution.

sorry for digging up an old thread, but what was the problem?

  • Installing XP using boot camp with partitiion drive?

I recently re-installed Leopard on my mac, and i decided to partition the drive.
Then, when I went to install XP using boot camp it said that it only works with 1 partition!
Is there any way round this without re-partitioning my drive?
I also have an ext drive now so maybe I could install it there, but that would be slower.

I just tried to run the hardware diagnostic test, half way through, the screen started to flicker so much, I had to abort the test. Please help!

    This is correct.
I wonder how it can be that in the System Preferences - Startup Disk - OS X volume can become "deselected" like it was... I had to re-highlight the OS X volume and all is well.

Try the Boot Camp Assistant when you are in OS X and download those and follow the directions in BCA utility.
Then look up the Boot Camp forum. I suspect you thought this was MBP related forum, it is for 65 lb tower model (and well the new "nMP Late 2013 Mac Pro" http://www.apple.com/support/macpro/

  • [HELP] Installing Windows 7 on MBP by USB using Boot Camp

    Hello!
Im using boot camp to try to Install windows 7 on my MBP. The problem is my cd/dvd driver is broken and I cant use DVD to boot from. I tryed to install by USB but when Im about to restart and boot try to boot the windows that I installed on the USB it says: 'No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key'
I have read that Apple changed in boot camp that if you have a DVD you cant use USB function to boot from in USB. I have fixed this problem by using this method from a video in youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_587318&feature=iv&src_vid= I3MNnbtfyzs&v=KmHxkahbK-g
But after I changed this I stil get problem when I boot that my laptop dont recognize the USB.
I need a help to solve this problem. Im using a MacBook Pro 13 (late 2011) OS X 10.8.5

I dont have the opportunities to repair my internal optical drive. Im looking for other solutions for this problem, there I can install the windows without the optical drive.

  • Can't boot into Windows 7 after using Boot Camp

So I installed Windows 7 on a separate 70GB partition using Boot Camp. Everything seems fine, but once installation finished and the computer restarted for the final time, the computer shows the blinking "_" on the black screen and then promptly reboots and this cycle continues without end.

Sounds stuck at the Windows bootloader. It's not clear why. I would zap PRAM by holding command-option-p-r at the startup chime until you hear a 2nd startup chime. Let it boot back into Mac OS. Insert the Windows 7 install disk and reboot, holding down 'c'.
Read this, in particular the 3rd option below the screen shot To open the System Recovery Options menu using the Windows 7 installation disc or a USB flash drive, or a system repair disc

  • Weird problem trying to install XP using Boot Camp 3.0.1

    Hi everyone, first post here.
I have been trying to install XP in my Mac Pro using Boot Camp and a very strange thing happened. I created the partition allright, I inserted my Windows XP cd, hit install, the computer restarted and that´s when it froze. What actually happened is that it got to the gray screen stage, the apple appeared on screen, and then the apple symbol started to shuffle between a "forbidden" symbol and an icon of a folder with a question mark on it.
I rebooted, and held alt key. It found the mac hd (from which it boots just fine if I selected) and my windows cd. If I select the windows cd, I get again the apple symbol and after some time it´s start to shuffle again between the three icons. I have tried to delete the partition, re-did all the steps and every time happens the exact same thing.
I have looked through many threads reporting problems with boot camp, but I haven´t found one that describes this specific problem. If there is such, please point me to it. Otherwise, anyone has any ideas?
Thank you very much for your help.

No, I did not get a solve. Actually, my problem worsened. I tried it again, but this time the computer wouldn´t detect my alu keyboard, hence I couldn´t select a drive to tell the bloody thing where to boot from. That is weird, because at the time I opened this thread it did work. I actually had to borrow a wired keyboard so I could hit alt and get it to work.
At the moment I am not so keen on trying it again......

  • Possible to re-install XP on boot camp partition in 10.7 (Lion)

    Hello,
I'm new to this forum and found it very useful in the past.
    Now I wanted to know;
I am currently running 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and installed Windows XP Home Edition (32bit) using Boot Camp.
If i updated to 10.7 (Lion) I know I will more than likely still have a working XP installation, but what if i mess it up? Will i be able to reinstall XP (On the same partition) with OS X Lion installed? I know it is no longer officially supported. (And then of course use the Snow Leopard CD to install drivers ect..)
    Thanks,
    BK
PS im quite sure its possible because with XP installing Lion doesn't update Boot Camp to 4.0 right?

You always have backups for Mac OS, just make one with WinClone.
It - the parttion and OS - will still be there, only moved and no longer on #3 partition.
    Lion can add Recovery.
Lion can also be installed on another hard drive instead, and then restored.
Lion is stll in the dot "zero" phase of its existence.
There is more risk in upgrading to Lion itself. What does it add to enrich or in performance?
There are half a dozen tutorials on MacFixit, reader discussion on MacIntouch of all things Lion, and Lion Community? 1000s of threads.
Anyone that doesn't come prepared with backups, clone of Mac OS, needs to develop and recoveryu strategy.
There is never a 100% risk free upgrade, never has been. Insurance companies live on cost-risk.
