You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.

I'd give these troubleshooting steps a try, they're for when your iPad appears frozen or unresponsive:
If the device is unresponsive or certain controls aren't working as expected, try restarting
To turn off the device, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
Slide your finger across the slider to turn off the device.
To turn on the device, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), try resetting
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds.

Go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and highlight the backup you want to delete and click on Delete Backup

Try a hard shutdown (hold down the power and home screen buttons together until it shuts down)
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

I úpdated'firefox's latest version and it has disabled my Java and all games applications. Said it cannot find anything compatible to replace them and left it at that. I can no longer access anything that needs Java

Try using http://ninite.com/java/ninite.exe to install Java. Please note that even though you download it you have to double click it to get it to run and install.

Same thing happened to me. My son's iPod touch suddenly started indicating that my "username or PW had changed" or was "incorrect" so I paid Apple $30 to find out that all that was required was updating the software by plugging his iPod into my computer & syncing with iTunes. In the simplest sense, archiving a file means making a copy that you never change and never discard. You already know how to do that.
iPhoto has built-in archival features, in the sense that it saves all versions of an image that you've modified. As long as you have adequate backups, you don't necessarily have any reason to archive an iPhoto library. If you want to delete images from the working library but still have access to them in case you change your mind, then you do need to archive those images. I don't have a specific suggestion as to how you should do that. You might post a question in the iPhoto forum.
