TS4611 exlaimation mark in wifi icon

I have a macbook air purchased last fall.  Since I came back from a one-week trip around Christmas, I have been unable to connect to my home wifi network.  There is an exclaimation mark in the wifi icon.  I have several other devices (mac, iphone, ipad, pc), and most of them work fine - except my son's macbook pro and my wife's iPad.  We tried several recommended solutions - "forgetting" the network and re-establishing the connection.  I looked online for possible solutions, but so far, no luck.  What is going on?  Does anyone have any idea?

When you see an exclamation point in the Wi-Fi menu, from the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. You may get a warning that Wi-Fi is not available, that you're too far from the base station, or that you're using the wrong password.
Assuming that you've ruled out those possibilities, restart the computer and try again. If there's no change, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane and authenticate, if necessary. From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click  Applyand test.
If there's still no connection, and if you have control of the router, compare its settings to Apple's recommendations. Some third-party routers may be incompatible in 802.11b/g/n radio mode. Try setting the mode to 802.11n only.

  • IMac gets exclamation mark on wifi icon

    Hi,
My iMac gets an exclamation mark this afternoon saying alert: no internet connection. In network setting it says self-assigned ip.  It worked perfectly before and all of a sudden it just won't connect to the Internet. My MacBook and iPad are able to connect to wifi so definitely some thing is wrong in my iMac. I got the exclamation mark once at school with my MacBook, but the problem seemed to be solve after one class which is 70 mins (I let it sleep and did nothing to it). Ive been trying to fix this problem with my iMac fir the whole afternoon but still get this exclamation mark.
I've tried: a. Turn off and on wifi.  B. Trying to delete plist files in library but I couldn't find them.  C. Renew DHCP lease  d. Create new location.  E. Restart
But no use. Any help?? Thanks in advance.
    Mustache,

Would love to know this answer as well.  I have a MacBook pro and am staying at my daughters house. Last night I got on the Internet by typing in her password, but tonight I can't, however I am using my iPad.  How can I get a connection on one but not the other.  Very frustrating since my iPad won't open the connections I need to work on since they require flash.  Would love to know how to fix this problem.
A simple restart has solved it for me on the few occasions it has happened.

I5 still using ios6 as of last night the phone will not connect to my Internet, in settings it says connected with the check mark however there is no wifi icon at the top of phone, have done everything possible to resolve... My i4 and pads are fine, I've had this phone for 8 months with no problems until last night , AT&T not any help, apple wants $ I thing it's a software problem.. Any one had this issue?

    - Restart the device. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    - Reset the device. (Same article as above.)
    - Reset All Settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings)
    - Restore from backup. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766 (If you don't have a backup, make one now, then skip to the next step.)
    - Restore as new device. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137  For this step, do not re-download ANYTHING, and do not sign into your Apple ID.
    - Test the issue after each step.  If the last one does not resolve the issue, it is likely a hardware problem.

  • "X" in the wifi icon of the toolbar

Similar to "exclamation" mark that others have seen in the wifi icon in the toolbar, I am getting an "X" within wifi icon and cannot add wifi in settings. Has anyone had this issue that can help?
    I am running a mid-year 2011 MacBook Air with 1.7 Intel Core i5 / 4GB ram / 128GB of storage.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Open the Network pane in System Preferences. A list of available network services appears on the left. If Wi-Fi is in the list, select it, then from the popup menu labeled with a gear icon at the bottom of the list, select
              Make Service Active
    Click Apply.
If Wi-Fi is not in the service list, click the plus-sign button at the bottom of the list, and then select Wi-Fi from the  Interface menu in the sheet that drops down. Click Create, then Apply.
If there is a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, click it and enter your administrator password to unlock the settings.
If the above steps don't solve the problem, continue.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with "com.apple.airport.preferences.plist" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Restart the computer and recreate your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

My macbook air will not connect to the internet. There is an exclamation point in the wifi icon and when i go into preferences i see that it is setting its own IP address. I have a macbookpro that is able to connect with no issue. HELP

Reset the TC to factory and start again.
Use all SMB type names for wireless and base station.. Not apple type names.. this is more important since Mavericks.
I also recommend different names for the different bands.
    So for example.
TC name.. TCgenx (I use whatever the generation number is for the x.. eg TCgen4 or latest one TCgen5)
    WIreless name.. TC24ghz for 2.4ghz
    TC5ghz for 5ghz
You can also set the channel manually.
If you still have issues.. start with no security and then if it fails to connect there is something seriously wrong with the laptop. Did you upgrade install Mavericks?? That can lead to driver issues.. I would recommend a clean install.

  • My Wifi doesn´t work. The Wifi icon on top menu bar states there is no hardware connected. How can I resolve this as previously Wifi connection worked perfectly. Is this something that to do with the computer hardware? Please advise.

My current situation: I have soooo many texts on my iphone and I haven't deleted many because I need the information contained in them for future reference and for legal purposes.  I would really like to find a means and way to save them other than on the phone itself. I've done searches for various apps yet I'm not finding what I think I would need.  It appears Apple does not sync the texts between the iphone and my MacBook Pro.
Try the computer apps PhoneView (Mac) or TouchCopy (Mac & PC):

  • IPad Fails to connect to wifi, but shows the wifi icon

My company just installed a wireless network in our building.  I was very excited because I can finally use my iPad in meetings and ditch the IBM laptop.  However, it does not want to connect to the wireless network.  Let me try to explain what happens.
    BTW,
    1. It is a new network so all the routers have the most up to date firmware.
    2. I have tried to connect with my iPad2 and iPad both without success.  The iPad was recently wiped clean and set up for my son.
    3. I can connect to my home network, my sprint mifi card, and other networks (hotels, starbucks) with no problem.
    4. Laptops can connect with out issue to the network.
    5. Others have been able to connect their iPhone to the network.
    6. One other person could not connect their iPod Touch to the network.  He gets the same response that I do.  I don't know anyone else with an iPad that works in my building.  However see item two above.
    7. It is using WPA security.
    8. I have reset network settings numerous times on both iPads and rebooted both iPads numerous times.
    9. I am able to connect to another wifi network in our building.  Both networks use the same security and password.
    This is what happens:
    1. Go to Settings -> Wi-Fi and choose my companies wireless network.
    2. It asks for the password and I type it in (Trust me I am typing it in correctly.  I have done it about a hundred times now.)
    3. Recieve the message "Unable to join the network," I hit Dismiss and Cancel.
    4. I get the Checkmark next to the wireless network I just tried to join.  If you click the blue arrow I get an IP address, but NO "Forget This Network" Option.  I also have the wifi icon next to the word iPad in the upper left corner of the screen.  It will also not load any Safari pages.  Safari states "Safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet."
    I have also tried:
    1. Go to Settings -> Wi-Fi and choose "Other."
    2. Type in the SSID name and choose WPA, Type the password.
    3. Hit "Join" & get the message "Could not find the network"
    4. I hit Dismiss and Cancel.
Please help.  I have read many articles on this forum and tried everything without success.

If you are getting a 169... IP, then you are not connected. That is a self-assigned IP that the iPad is giving itself because the router is not giving it one.
Is it possible that you are not selecting the correct WPA security protocol for your network?

  • No WiFi icon and not detecting any networks on new ipad 2

    Hi
    I have a new ipad 2 16G wifi.
I went through all the setup but have been unable to connect to any networks.
    I have updated software
    I have restored
I have turned router on / off
    I have made router public
I have tried to specify the network
    I have reset
I have turned WiFi on i pad on / off
All i get is the the little grey spinning wheel.
Iphone 4, all other wireless devices etc work fine on this network.
Any suggestions?  i can see that the wireless icon has disappeared for some people when updating software, but i have never had the wifi icon on, despite it saying that wifi is switched on!
I am starting to think that there may actually just be a fault with the ipad itself....

There is no network to forget.
When i try and choose other and mannually input details when i select join it says "Could not scan for wireless networks"

  • WiFi icon disappears in landscape mode

On my 32GB iPhone 3G-S running version 3.1.2, while in Safari or Mail, the WiFi icon disappears when I turn the phone from portrait to landscape mode. I am still connected to the WiFi network OK and can use the applications fine, but there is no verification that I am connected. For completeness, I am currently in Europe and have placed the phone in Airplane Mode to avoid international roaming and data charges.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Well - I appear to have, at least temporarily, solved this problem by doing a phone reset. Icon is now staying visible in landscape mode after the reset.

  • Question marks instead of icons in the dock.

    Hi,
can anyone suggest why my macbooks have question marks instead of icons on and off in the dock. When clicked the icon will re-appear and the application will launch. There is no pattern to which icons will be replaced by question marks or how many. Sometimes all will be question marks, and other times only one? Any ideas?
Also - just a general question - of less importance, but with Leopard looming, historically how well does a server cope with new software versions on clients? Will I really need Server 10.5?

With regard to the questionmark issue, check out this thread:

  • Z10: Latest Update 10.2.1.2941 no Wifi icon at top rigt

Just updated to 10.2.1.2941, after the update there is no wifi icon at the top right of the screen.
In the Settings->Network Connections->Wi-Fi indicates that I am connected to the wi-fi.
If I disable Data Services, the wifi icon appears.
I want to confirm that even though the wifi icon is not present, the wifi connection is still used for data.

    same thing happened to me.

  • WiFi icon/indicator disappears

Yesterday a bunch of users noticed that their WiFi icon/indicator disapeared and that the phones show "acquiring IP address" non-stop. Two things:
    1) I noticed that even though this is happening I could still use WiFi to access servers on my LAN anyway, so my WiFi worked (same with other users).
    2) This symptom coincided with blackberry.com being offline.
    3) If you turn off Data Services in settings, the WiFi icon comes back immediately.
As soon as blackberry.com came back online, everybody's WiFi icon came back
Can you provide an explanation for this behaviour? I would dearly love to clear the matter up with all my users/friends.
    Cheers,
    Dave Matthews
P.S. The exact same thing happened two weeks ago (June 3rd).

a better option IMO is to use Address Reservation in DHCP
When you specify a reserved IP address for a computer on the LAN, that computer receives the same IP address each time it accesses the router’s DHCP server. Assign reserved IP addresses to servers that require permanent IP settings.
not sure if you have tested this or not John, but it makes life easier when you dont have to change network settings on a laptop, tablet or mobile phone
