TS4636 Can Sophos Anti-Virus cause a "kernel panic"?

Hello everyone,
The other day my MacBook Pro Retina restarted out of nowhere after it was not really reacting to anything anymore. I read on support section of apple that this may have been caused by a "kernel panic" and that most of the time a "kernel panic" appears after installing new software. The "kernel panic" appeared after I just installed Sophos Anti-Virus for my MacBook. So is it possible that by installing Sophos Anti-Virus this "kernel panic" was caused??

This can happen. Sophos has/had a bug that caused these kinds of problems in Mavericks. I know that they were working on fixing it, but I honestly have lost track at this point and don't know whether it has been fixed yet. I can say, though, that this seems to be fairly rare, as I've heard very few reports of such an issue. It may only affect certain hardware, or may only be triggered by the presence of some other software. I don't know.
In any case, if this problem is affecting you, it's probably wise to uninstall Sophos. However, you need to be cautious about installing other anti-virus software, as most is less well-behaved than Sophos. You may very well be able to do without entirely.
See my Mac Malware Guide for more information.

Yes.    "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: InterCheck"
Apparently InterCheck is the Sophos scanner.
    Uninstall Sophos >  http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/Removing-Sophos-An ti-Virus-for-Mac-Home-Edition/td-p/37
Then restart your Mac. Hopefully no more kernel panics.
According to the Sophos system requirements, you should be able to run Sophos on Lion v10.7
If you want to have anti virus software installed, you can download ClamXav from the App Store. Might have better luck.

  • I have what appears to be a virus on my Mac namely MAL/FAK AV-OQ how can I remove it? I have only discovered after running SOPHOS anti virus software???

I have what appears to be a virus on my mac namely MAL/FAK AV-OQ I only discovered it after installing SOPHOS anti virus software.
I cannot remove it automatically with this software it says it has to be done manually.
    Where do I start???
    Help req'd urgently

That is Windows malware, and cannot affect your Mac. See:
    http://www.sophos.com/en-us/threat-center/threat-analyses/viruses-and-spyware/Ma l~FakeAV-OQ.aspx
It may be attached to an e-mail message or could be something that was copied over from a Windows machine via flash drive or something similar. If it is attached to an e-mail message, simply delete the e-mail. (Do not let Sophos, or any other anti-virus software, quarantine the message or attachment! That can corrupt the mailbox that the message resides in.) If it isn't an e-mail message, you can let Sophos quarantine and delete the file or you can delete it yourself.

  • I just downloaded an update and my sophos anti-virus is going beserk.  It will not allow me to remove the threat when I unlock the quarantine manager and I have no idea of what to do

I just downloaded an update and my sophos anti-virus is going beserk.  It will not allow me to remove the threat manually when I unlock the quarantine manager and I have no idea of what to do.

The malware it's finding is probably Windows malware attached to e-mail messages. What are the names of some of those things? Assuming they're not Mac malware, allowing Sophos (or any other anti-virus software) to remove them could cause problems. For example, if they're attached to e-mail, removing them improperly by simply deleting the message file will leave the malware on the e-mail server, and it may very well end up getting re-downloaded when your mail client syncs with the server. It may also corrupt the mailbox.
If you actually ever see a malware name starting with MacOS or OSX (I forget which one Sophos uses), then you will need to worry, and should not assume that the malware can be completely removed by anti-virus software of any kind.

  • Sophos uninstaller says "Sophos Anti-virus is not installed" but sophos still blocks websites.

Hi, I downloaded the free (trial?) version and didn't like it blocking websites. I dragged the app to the trash and, of course, it didn't uninstall. Looked it up and got a (I think there are more than one) remove tool for sophos but it says it can't find sophos on my MAC. Yet, when browsing the internet, sophos still blocks websites. Any suggestions? I'm a little frustrated.  Thanks in advance, Willie

    Hi Willie,
Sorry you're having trouble. If you uninstall by dragging the app to the trash instead of using the remove sophos tool, this sort of thing unfortunately tends to happen.
One thing I wanted to mention is that if you don't want Sophos to block websites, you can actually disable the web filtering feature. All you have to do is click the sheild icon > preferences > web protection and toggle the switch to 'off.'
Another question, I was just curious if you were having trouble with Sophos blocking sites that you thought were safe? We should only block you from accessing malicious websites, so if we were interferring with accessing "regular" sites, you can let us know which sites were incorrectly blocked, and we'll take another look at it.
All that said, if you just want to remove Sophos there's a couple things you can do.
    1. Restart your mac, reinstall Sophos, and then once it's working properly, use the 'Remove Sophos Antivirus' app to remove it
    2. Manually remove Sophos
    - Open Activity Monitor and stop any processes with "Sophos" in the name
    - Open Finder, and remove everything in the following list:
    /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus
    /Library/LaunchDaemos/com.sophos.*
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.sophos.*
    /Library/Preferences/com.sophos.*
    /Library/Logs/Sophos Anti-Virus.log
    /Applications/Sophos Anti-Virus.app
    /Applications/Sophos Remove.app
    /var/db/receipts/com.sophos.*
Note: You'll need administrative rights to remove most of those files. Then reboot, to ensure everything is cleared from memory too. Then run through the list again, to ensure you got everything.
Warning: Be cautious when deleting things in some of those directories. Not everything in there is related to our software - our files contain the name "Sophos".
Hope that helps, let me know if you have any trouble!

  • HT4561 What can I do to get the 10.6.8 update to install WITHOUT causing a Kernel Panic?

Every time I try to install the 10.6.8 update my iMac boots a Kernel Panic and I have to do a recovery and patches all the way back up to 10.6.7
Then when I try the 10.6.8 update again, I get another Kernel Panic. It takes hours and hours to download the updates required to return to 10.6.7 from what my recovery CD contains and after three tries I'm about to give up!
What is going on that 10.6.8 causes a Kernel Panic on boot-up?!?
I have a Mid-2007 24" iMac and I don't use Bootcamp or Parrellels or anything interesting or fun. This computer is primarlly used for email, browsing (Firefox) and playing Minecraft.
The reason I want the update is that I'm afraid Mojang (Minecraft) will soon require a Java update and without the 10.6.8 update and installing Lion I can not get a Java update.

I have been reading the related posts and have found none of the suspect files. (mouse-related.ktext, CHUD related ktext files)
I deleted the Logictec mouse/keyboard drivers and stuff and also am deleting my 3rd party Magic Mouse driver.
As soon as I read something definite about this I will try another update.
I do not own a Time Machine so restoring from a backup is not happening.
I will be required (should another panic occure) to go through the entire update process again.
I curious, what would hacking on the forums have to do with 10.6.8 updates on user machines?
Also, is Apple Corporation addressing the "issues of late with 10.6.8 updates"?

  • My company requires that I install an anti-virus program on my MAC in order to gain access to our shared drives from home. The IT group suggests I download Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition. Is there reason I shouldn't do this?

My company requires that I install an anti-virus program on my Mac in order to access shared corporate drives via Citrix from home. The IT guys recommend Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac. Is this OK or are there other programs I should use instead?

Sophos or ClamXav either one are recommended. FYI... the Mac drive may slow down as a result of installing a/v software.

  • Can't boot from OSX cd - Kernel Panic or bad CPU?

Greetings, All! I've looked at all the articles related to this that I can find, here and on other sites, but have not been able to solve the problem. Here's a list to briefly describe my issue:
-Got Prohibitory sign on my MDD Dual 867 when I tried booting into OS X (10.3).
-Tried all the resets (PRAM, PMU), re-seated RAM, took out RAM, etc.
-Trashed OS, and tried to re-install, but Mac won't boot from DVD (10.3) or CD (10.2) - just get the spinning wheel and finally Prohibitory sign...
-Ran Hardware test to loop for about 17 hours; nothing, all fine.
Then I just recently noticed that when I run Digital Performer 3 (OS9), it usually shows 2 usage indicators for CPU performance (1 for each processor) but now only shows one. So, I'm thinking a processor may have died, or become unseated, or something. But I read somewhere, on one of the forums, that it isn't likely for one of a pair of processors to go, or if it did, the other wouldn't be able to function solo. But if that weren't the case, and the Mac can run on 1 processor, why would that keep the Mac from booting from the OSX disk?
The Mac still runs fine in OS9, though it does seem to be a little slower when I do processor-intensive operations in DP, and sometimes hangs on startup, and seems to have some "sleep" issues (won't wake back up sometimes...). I don't know of any way to check if both processors are functioning in OS9. Does anyone know of a utility that will do that? Or if there's one in the OS (The Profiler only shows processor speed)? And would that cause the Kernel Panic and keep the Mac from booting in OSX? It's very frustrating. I appreciate any help or tips anyone may have to offer. Peace, Gelon

    Hey Guys!
I think I know the "why", but not the solution...
I have a PowerMac G4 400Mhz Dual Processor, and some day I had the same troubles. No boot on OS X, but I can in OS9. Checking the Open Firmware commands, I saw one of the processor marked as "dead". So, (dont't ask how) I removed one processor from the logic board. Now I got the same "Processor dead", I can boot on OS9, (with an alert for the processor) but is stable. No boot in OS X.
So, what I suposse (having the same reports in PC computers trying to run OS X) is that the OS X checks for the compliance of the System for running. When a processor fails, the OS X can not recognize the system as valid (as in some PC computers happens) and can not boot. I also suposse if we can get a "patched" OS X for PowerPC or patch the firmware in any way, we can work with just one processor. Or, buying a new processor for the Mac.
    Pls. send me your comments.

Thanks! I suspected that as well, but I think it is when Carbon Copy Cloner runs together with Paragon NTFS that I'm getting the problem. Does that make sense?
May I ask which part of the log should I be looking at to see what is causing the kernel panic?

  • Latest update cause a kernel panic

Yes, I've submitted feedback. I just want to warn people. I let the updater do its thing and restart my system, then go watch TV while it updated. When I came back to turn everything off and go to bed, I have a kernel panic splashed across my 30" Apple Cinema Display. Hold off on doing the updates!!!
Doing a hard shutdown got my system back, but I'm in the middle of a big project, and I don't need to see a kernel panic at 10:30 at night. Let's see...this update caused a kernel panic, one of the last updates hosed Rosetta applications - including Quicken 2007 - until Apple came up with a patch, and one of the updates before that hosed my Airport Extreme until Apple came up with a patch for that.
Seriously??? I've been using Apple products for 29 years. I expect so much better from Apple.

I would think you'd wait for spindown then power off the device then unplug.

  • Workaround for Sophos anti-virus blocking remote panel

Hello, I was hoping if anyone had some suggestions regarding working around an antivirus.
I'm trying to have a PC act as a web server for some Labview embedded remote panels. Unfortunately whenever I tried to load it in browser on both the local host and other computers connected to the network (even very simple test VIs), I get the 0% downloaded problem people have had in the past. Since I have admin privileges on the host computer I have discovered that by disabling the antivirus (Sophos Endpoint Security and Control, ver. 10.2) completely fixed the problem for that machine.
My problem is that I intend for students to use the VIs and they do not have the access rights to disable Sophos so they too will be able to use the panel. Faculty IT are unwilling to modify the antivirus for the computer lab PCs so it is down to what I can do on the server PC to fix this problem.
Does anyone have any suggestions to work around it? I've tried a couple of different ports for the web server (8000 & 5000) with no luck. Snapshots come through fine, it is only the embedded ones that get blocked.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Specs:
    Labview 2011 with Run-Time Engine 6.1
    Windows 7 (64 bit)
Anti virus: Sophos Endpoint Security and Control, ver. 10.2. On-access scanning is causing the issue.

I guess you have to ask IT which ports you can use, e.g. 8080, from the top of my mind.

Uninstall both Avast and Symantec ..
Uninstall Avast >  How to completely uninstall avast! Free Antivirus from a PC or Mac
Avast has caused many Mac users problems as noted from the results of an ASC search here.
Uninstall Symantec/Norton >  Download and run the Norton Removal Tool to uninstall your Norton product
Excellent user tip >   Viruses, Trojans, Malware - and other aspects of Internet Security: Apple Support Communities
Having one anti virus software installed is not necessary, two is overkill.
If your Mac contintues to generate kernel panics after uninstalling Symantec and Avast, the uninstallers do not always delete all the associated files.
Backup your important data then reformat the drive and reinstall OS X using OS X Recovery

  • Can any anti-virus protection software be used with Mac?

I was wondering how to protect my laptop from viruses etc and whilst looking i've found no software thats for Mac,
Can anyone suggest anything or know of any software to help?
    Thanks,

You can get Norton Anti-Virus for Mac here:
    http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/products/overview.jsp?pcid=ma&pvid=nav10 mac
Bear in mind that (as far as I know) there are no viruses that have been found to infect OS X. The Norton package above is intended to make sure that your Mac files are clean of PC viruses so that you don't infect your PC-based friends.

  • Why and how can Premiere cause a kernel panic? (at all, much less as often as I'm seeing)

I get kernel panics disturbingly often with Premiere CC 2014 (and multiple versions of OS X---both Mavericks and Yosemite). Trying to render moves on an oversized still or feathered masking color correction seem to be common causes, and I suspect OpenCL hardware acceleration is related.
But regardless of the specific causes, I'm curious about the fact that Premiere seems to be the only app on my Retina MacBook Pro that causes kernel panics as far as I can tell. Is that due to the kernel extensions needed for OpenCL hardware acceleration? How can Premiere even access the internals of OS X so deeply that it can cause kernel panics in the first place? Most apps that crash, just crash and don't take down the machine with them.
