TTS w/ hi-quality natural sounding voices for GNU/Linux

There's a bunch of nice text-to-speech apps for Windows, but are there any that could run on Arch? Festival isn't terrible, but it's not good. By good I mean sth along the lines of http://www.expressivo.com It doesn't have to be free, it may be a commercial product.
I've checked out espeak, flite, http://www.cepstral.com/demos and found them all lacking.
Acapela TTS isn't bad, but it's only for Windows and Mac OSX.
A nice list of different voice samples: http://www.nextup.com AT&T Natural Voices aren't available for GNU/Linux

The expressivo video sounds terrible. AT&T Natural Voices are the best sounding I know of and is also available for GNU/Linux.

  • Optical out sounds aweful for voices

right now i have my card connected to an onkyo integra series receiver through the optical out and i plug in a headphone to the receiver. when i play a movie, background noises sound absolutely perfect. heck?i can hear a door squeek like it was right next to me and leaves russling in the wind. however, the voices seem to sound muted for some reason. i can barely understand anything. if i plug?the?headphone into the front panel?the problem goes away.
i'm assuming it's some sort of conversion from surround sound mode to stereo headphones issue. i've already set the sb control panel to headphones..

Do you have Dolby Digital Li've turned on while you're doing this? I'm guessing that might be a factor. It sounds to me a lot like you're only hearing the front left/right channels of a 5. signal, since my understanding is that the voices usually are mostly in the center channel.

  • Any better voices for Voice Over?

Does anyone know if there are any other voices for the Voice Over utility? Does Apple offer any? How about free ones?

It's an interesting question, Your Majesty!
Apple offers no other voices at the moment, though there are some queued up for Leopard when it comes out in the spring.
I haven't found any free voices either, though there are some Unix ones that would need to be compiled and installed—not a process for the faint-hearted.
Voices from Cepstral are available in a number of languages, and are comparable in quality to the Apple voices. They cost $29.99 apiece, and integrate quite well with VoiceOver, although there are occasional stability problems.
Other voices are available from Acapela as part of their Infovox iVox package. They work best when integrated with the VisioVoice package from AssistiveWare. This costs $249, but there is a special deal at $185 until 31st December 2006. The voices alone are available through AssistiveWare at $199 for US English, with again a special offer price until 31st December of $149. This gives you 5 high-quality (HQ) voices, which are a great deal better than any of the Apple or Cepstral offerings, and 2 high-definition (HD) voices, that sound less lifelike but can cope with special characters, and distinguish between upper- and lower-case letters.
In particular, the British English voices (slightly more expensive, but can be added separately) are superb quality—the best text-to-speech on any platform anywhere. I can also confirm the quality of the French voices, but am not qualified to judge the others!

  • Wasn't there supposed to be a new Voice for Leopard Speech things?

    Hello!
I remember that some time ago, I heard that Leopard was going to have new voices of some sort for things that use "speech". I believe it came from someone with the developer beta. Unfortunately, it appears that retail Leopard does not have a new voice, at least doesn't appear in the Speech panel of System Prefs. I may be missing it, however. Is there actually a new voice, of was that a rumor that never materialized?
I'm running Mac OS 10.5.1 on a 15" Powerbook G4, and everything is fully up-to-date.
    Thanks,
    -Daniel

Alex is surprisingly natural sounding. I found it accidently when I was poking around looking for large items (it's 670MBs). It should be here:
    "/System/Library/Speech/Voices/Alex.SpeechVoice"
Had it read a poem and it did quite well. I currently have it make a little announcement when I login:
"Welcome to Leopard. Francine has changed some of my spots, but I forgive her." Well, my students got a kick out of it....

  • Sound Setting for "Silent" or "Vibrate Only"?

I'm new to the iPhone, having bought an iPhone 4 last week. I'm looking for a way to control the sounds with a little more granularity. Or maybe I'm just missing something. Here are some things I'd like to do:
    1. Turn off the "outgoing SMS message" sound. Keep the incoming SMS sound on.
    2. Be able to easily put the phone into "Vibrate" mode. All sounds turn to vibrate.
    3. Be able to put the phone into "Silent" mode. Keep it on, but no sounds at all.
If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful.

See what the manual says about sounds http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPhone_UserGuide.pdf , page 159
    Sounds and the Ring/Silent Switch
Switch between ring and silent mode: Flip the Ring/Silent switch on the side of iPhone.
When set to silent, iPhone doesn’t play any ring, alert, or effects sounds. It does, however, play alarms set using Clock.
Note: In some countries or regions, the sound effects for Camera and Voice Memos are played even if the Ring/Silent switch is set to silent.
Set whether iPhone vibrates when you get a call: Choose Sounds. To set whether iPhone vibrates in silent mode, turn Vibrate under Silent on or off. To set whether iPhone vibrates in ring mode, turn Vibrate under Ring on or off.
Adjust the ringer and alerts volume: Choose Sounds and drag the slider. Or, if no song or video is playing and you aren’t on a call, use the volume buttons on the side of iPhone.
Set the ringtone: Choose Sounds > Ringtone.
Set alert and effects sounds: Choose Sounds and turn items on or off under Ring . When the Ring/Silent switch is set to ring, iPhone plays sounds for alerts and effects that are turned on.
You can set iPhone to play a sound whenever you:
    Get a call
    Get a text message
    Get a voicemail message
    Get an email message
    Send an email message...
    So,
    1) not possible to have only one sound for SMS out/in
    2) use the ring/silent switch
    3) Alarms set by your clock will have sound, even in silent mode (ring/silent switch switch active)

  • Would really like a simple sound editor for my BB Curve

I've been using my BB for a few weeks now and, so far, really like it. The one software that I would REALLY like find is a simple sound editor for my BB. I would like to be able create short audio recordings (using either the voice recorder or other application) and create just a clip of that file (not the entire file) so that I can post them, directly from my BB, to either facebook or my blog. This is very simple to do when audio is transferred to the desktop but I would like to be able to do this from my BB.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

I checked out the PortableApps page and it appears as if that allows me to install some type of data on my BB which can then be run on other computers but not on the BB itself - is that correct?
You are correct. The principle of a PortableApp application is to be put on a USB stick, and then can be used on any desktop or laptop computer without being installed. You have put it on the memory card of your blackberry, it enables you to use it on any computer you plug your Blackberry into.
Concerning a sound editor in Blackberry, I don't know.

  • Sound Voice over questions

    A few sound questions...
Is there a way to capture only the sound to save space from my Camera...?
When using voice over, it collects all the fan noise from the computer... is there a solution for this?
Is anyone aware of a Digital Voice recorder that could be used and converted for narration and voice over.... ?
    I have mac without intel
I Mac 17 inch with superdrive Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    Thanks

Thanks so far... I am just looking to get voice over picture narration... so just need voice recording ... Now if I can pull music off a CD... is there a way to record on a digital voice recorder and transfer to CD...
The Imac does not have a plug for an external mic, that I can find...
The problem as I see it with recording voice on Camera is that I just need the voice, not the picture and so it uses up a lot of memory to do voice over in Camera since I have to import the useless picture as well so if I am being clear here, I am just trying to have sound tracks such as the ones you can import off a CD
I have been looking a digital voice recorders but most do not seem to work with mac... and I am not exactly sure of what sound file type transfers into FCE via Itune import.
So the short question here are what are the options just for sound files for FCe?

  • Audio - recording high quality stereo sound with iPhone 3Gs

There are a number of excellent sound recording apps now available for iPhone - notably RecTools 08 (8 track, PCM) but no way to get stereo sound into the device. To date both Belkin and Griffin state their stereo microphones (designed for iPod) will not work with iPhone because Apple has not enabled audio input via the dock connector.

  • Sound Card for Notebook that supports

Hi?I have read that certain sound cards (including Audigy 2) that support 5. and also 7. surround sound don't actually support 2. users such as myself. I need a sound card for a newly purchased notebook and would welcome advice in this area ie: what's the best soundcard to get (external or pcmia) that will support good old fashioned 2. stereo? Many thanks in advance?Sparky2

If the PCMCIA type in your laptop is type of ExpresCard then there are no PCMCIA solutions available yet. Also there are not many PCMCIA solutions available at all. If plain analog stereo output is enough for you then I suggest you to look these:
    - E-MU 02, ECHO Indigo DJ and IO. These are all under $US200.
As USB, from Creative, the E-MU 0202 USB and 0404 USB are superior devices compared to other Creatives (SoundBlaster) USB models . There also are plenty of USB devices available under many brands. Just check this theread to see some of those.
FireWire devices are a bit more expensi've but if you plan to invest lets say $US300 - $US500 then ... Those low budged ($US00) FireWire devices are not very high quality by the converrters.

  • What are good quality speakers to purchase for mini mac

what are good quality speakers to purchase for mini mac?

While I can't recommend any brand of camera, you should consider a couple of things about the editing... iMovie 8 is a good program to use if you just need to create something quickly with little real editing and sound manipulation. And iM 8 will interface with both DV tape cameras as well as hard disk/flash drive types as well. You can export the product to web services, etc very easily but it will take some extra effort to create a DVD from the edited shots. There is no direct export to iDVD.
If you want to get more serious about editing, you should consider looking iMovie 6 as it has much more flexibility in rearranging clips, adding and editing sounds, etc. However, it will only interface with DV tape cameras, which by the way, are the highest quality pics available, and you can create DVD disks.
You might try borrowing a tape camera to make a test run and compare it to a camera that uses a HD for storage. Use iM 8 and compare to ease, etc, and the product to one created in iM 6. This certainly is not the kind of recommendation you are asking for, but maybe will help in making your decision about which way to go.

  • Sound Card for the Mac Pro

    Hello,
I've searched around but can't seem to find any definitive answer to buying a sound card for my Mac Pro. I want to plug in a guitar and microphone for garageband and voice overs on FCP. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jake

Best look for usb/fw audio interfaces which can be inexpensive and easy to get up an running.
There are many many cards on the market all depending on how many I/O you are chasing and overall sonic results.
If your in the market for entry level cards - check out
    www.m-audio.com
    www.focusrite.com
    www.digidesign.com
    or
if your in the semi-pro market, look at www.rme-audio.com (mainly the fireface series)
My pick if you are an entry level user wanting a great 2in/2out interface, have a look at the Duet by Apogee.

(I use all their top end pro kit and can tell you they are a very good company in both product and support)

  • How can I set repeating sound notifications for voicemails received?

Is there a way to set a sound notification for voicemail received?  Having to constantly pick up the phone to see if there is a VM message is

Can this also be done for calendar entries, as a reminder?

Beats Solo HD On-Ear Headphone red has a 5 stars review compared to others, are they the same products ,same quality of sound?

First, there are plenty "Fake" Beats headphones and earphones, they are almost looked the same with the original, but the sound qualities are basically poor.
Beats is good for people who likes strong bass.
Recently, I am in love with the new Apple earpods, they perform good, and particular with an app. called "Dirac" lite.
This is a great review for most of the top quality headphones and earphones
