[tty] All my ttyts

Hey, some days ago I noticed that my tty{2-6} are not available and tty1 is showing just that:

On the other tty there's just a white "_" symbol.

Yeah, a blinking cursor.

I just updated my system with yaourt -Syua. I noticed that at the start inittools(?) was replaced by kvm(?) or something like that.

  • [SOLVED] I broke X by pressing a function key

My laptop is a Lenovo y50 4K.  I have Nvidia hybrid optimus graphics with the proprietary Nvidia driver and xrandr modesetting in my .xinitrc.  I have been using my current configuration successfully for a few months.  The issue started when I pressed FN + F3.  This is the function key that toggles my video output source / screen mirroring to the HDMI plug.  I meant to press FN + F2, which is the one that toggles my screen backlight, but my finger missed the key.  I didn't have anything plugged into the HDMI port at the time and X immediately crashed.  I tried to restart X, but it segfaulted.  I tried pressing the function key again, but under TTY all it does is type "p" in console.  I tried restarting the computer, but that changed nothing.  X still crashes.  I tried loading X with a HDMI screen plugged in, no change.  Now I started to think that it was maybe a bios level toggle, so I looked for an option to disable the HDMI plug in my bios settings.  There was none.  I tried rebooting into Windows plugging a device into the HDMI port and cycling through the HDMI screen mirroring options, disabling the HDMI port there and rebooting.  I tried this because I had a wifi issue in the past that turned out to be a bios level toggle from my wifi function key that could only be set from Windows.  At this point, The HDMI output would no longer mirror the screen at bios and Grub, but as soon as the Linux kernel loaded, the screen would mirror over HDMI again.  I don't know if it's relevant or not, but I have used my HDMI port for screen mirroring in the past without problems, but I never used the function key to toggle it before.
This error shows up under dmesg when I try to start X.

Trilby wrote:If you have longish uptimes, I suspect this has nothing to do with the output switch.  The switch may have caused a crash, but the failure to restart X could be due to this issue
It turned out to be exactly this.  Thank you.  It would seem that the function key causing the crash was completely unrelated to my not being able to restart X.  I found the bug report here.
I followed the advice in the comments and got it running by renaming /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglamoregl.so so glamor can't load.  I'll mark the thread as solved.  Hopefully this bug gets addressed quickly because that fix feels like a dirty hack.

  • [solved (kinda)] What's wrong with HAL?

I recently updated HAL to 0.5.13-3 and rebooted because of a kernel Upgrade during the same Syu. After reboot i couldn't access the input devices in X. It just dont worked. On TTY all was fine, but in X i had no input
After trying several things for a while, i downgraded HAL from  0.5.13-3 to  0.5.13-2 and all was fine again.
I put hal to IgnorePkg until i know what i need to do to get input working in X with newest HAL.
Of course i did some research. It seems that this problem does not affect all users and there are different solutions.
    Any hints?
    Kind regards,
    Dirk

Well, good Most people i ask about this answer "wfm" (well, they do not only say "wfm", but that's the conclusion *g*).
I downgraded and rebooted the system, and it worked. I only downgraded HAL and nothing other, so the problem is directly according to HAL 0.5.13-3 and does not appear on HAL 0.5.13-2. This is reproducible.
I could leave the package "hal" on IgnorePkg forever, but i guess that's not a good solution.

  • [Solved] Can boot fine, but all TTYs are frozen at UDev

I've only noticed this recently when I was trying out some new WMs, and tried to change back to openbox.
I'm using the catalyst driver from the catalyst repo.
Upon boot, everything works fine. The first few outputs are at a stupid resolution, but when it hits the "Udev processing" part, it swaps to the proper resolution, and boots just fine.
However, when I try to access one of the TTYs, they are all still stuck at the silly resolution, with the status of the Udev statement stuck at [Busy]. I then can't swap back to X.

I own an Nvidia card, so I can't help you much, but according to the Catalyst wiki page, "xorg-server 1.12 is in [extra] repo, catalyst does not support it so please use [xorg111] repo]". So you *do* have Xorg v1.11, right?
    $ pacman -Qi xorg-server
You should try the open source radeon driver instead. Or are you that much into gaming on Linux? Open source drivers offer some 3D support but for gaming you're probably better off dual booting with Windows. By switching to radeon you'll also get rid of that "silly resolution", as catalyst doesn't support KMS.
    PS: Here's my /etc/inittab:
    id:3:initdefault:
    rc::sysinit:/etc/rc.sysinit
    rs:S1:wait:/etc/rc.single

    c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 -s 38400 tty3 linux
    ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -t3 -r now
I got rid of those newbie comments a long time ago.
By having just 3 tty's it keeps my X session on Ctrl+Alt+F4 (because sometimes I find it frustrating to cop a feel for my F7 - especially in the dark, as I have a black keyboard...). The "-n -l /usr/local/sbin/autologin" part is from this wiki page: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Au … al_console (C login program) and the "--noclear" parameter removes some of the flickering during boot (the boot messages stay on screen).

  • Synchronize clipboard across all TTY sessions?

I'm trying to paste a short snippet of code into one of the tty sessions command line (those terminal sessions shown after pressing Ctrl + Alt + F1, F2, etc..) I'd like to use Ctrl  +v and Ctrl +P to paste across an X session and a terminal one. I don't know much about how clipboard are handled in arch and linux in general, but I want to know if its possible to achieve this. Thanks in advance!

Go and find out, then. Google saves your time and the time of everyone else. Please do not post questions like this without doing some basic searching first in future.

The problem is the log doesn't even print the error report as you can see it. The delay is not shown in the console either, it was just like:
    [ 10.0000] Power Down....
and my laptop was halting there for like 30-40 seconds before completely shutdown.

My current hypotheses is the acpi_cpufreq that make this problem happens because when I booted into the lts kernel that module is not even loaded. But I can't even blacklist it because even if I make a modprobe.conf to disable it from loading it still be loaded automatically by the kernel. Any help here will be greatly appreciated, I'm not a "just post any problem before trying myself" person. I've tried every method by reading wikis and forums without any success, this is even my first post here . But this problem has been troubling me for a very long time. So please help me guys
Tell me what information do I miss and I'll post it immediately.

Did a fresh install and still having the same problem. Giving up now. Mod can now close this thread

  • Black screen instead of TTYs after Xorg once started and leaved

    Hi,
I've installed Arch on my laptop and experience following issue... I log in after boot and run "startx", then openbox starts properly. This is fine, but when I leave X, I can't see anything (TTY expected). I can switch to another TTY, login as root and type "reboot" or type "killall X", then log in as regular user and type "startx" to get openbox again. So there are TTYs obviously but I can't see anything but black screen.
By leaving X (above) I mean...
    - typing "sudo killal X" in xterm
    - using openbox "Log Out" menu option
    - switching to another TTY by hitting Alt+Fn
All of these lead to the same issue.
I assume it's not Xorg problem, but I may be wrong of course. Is that driver related? I have Nvidia card and use proprietary drivers installed via pacman. Can anybody give me an advice where to look? Thanks a lot. I also attach (maybe relevant) outputs. If there is anything else needed to know please tell me and I'll post it.

I was having this exact same problem, then it just stopped. I am using the nouveau driver and I have a tnt2 card.
IIRC, I was having an unrelated problem with xorg or udev or something was having problems detecting my monitor, it claimed I had two monitors connected, I wrote an xorg.conf file and that fixed the problem. IDK if its is related or not because I don't recall exactly when things started working when I would switch ttys.
Try using the nouveau driver and see if it does the same thing, it has a kernel module so it might make difference,

  • No login available on ttys (systemd)

    Hello,
I can no longer login to ttys (ctrl + alt + F1 - this is called a "tty" right?).
If I switch to one of the ttys I can still read some bootup messages I think.
    The last one says
[OK] listening on delayed shutdown socket
No login prompt or blinking cursor at all. all ttys (tty1 - tty6) look that way. If it may help understanding my problem I can type all of that messages into a post...
There is no problem switching back to X  waiting on tty7. This makes me believe I do not have broken keyboard config or stuff.
Has anyone a hint, were i can look for some log output what i going wrong when I hit ctrl + alt + f[0-6]?
    some research:

  • All the subnets are not reachable over the VPN

    Hi all,
We have a EZVPN connection to one of our branch office. Connectivity diagram is attached with this discussion.
    HO LAN (10.1.0.0/16 & 192.6.14.0/24) --------- ASA5520-------- Internet ---------- Cisco2911-------- LAN of remote location (10.2.0.0/16)
we are using 10.2.0.0/26 subnet at remote office and 10.1.0.0/16 & 192.6.14.0/24 subnets at HO. From HO through 10.1.0.0/16 & 192.6.14.0/24 all the devices are reachable except the firewall which is connected with GigabitEthernet0/2 interface of cisco2911 router(on which VPN is created).
Its a fortigate firewall and it is reachable locally from the network 10.2.0.0/16. I believe its an issue with phase2 ACLs but didn't able to resolve the issue.
I'm not able to take GUI / CLI interfaces of fortigate firewall even i'm not able to ping the IP of GigabitEthernet0/2 interface of cisco2911.
    kindly advise on same.

en_US.UTF-8 is also uncommented in locale.gen, and it's been generated.  I haven't gotten any locale errors in any application I use, and it only appears before the prompt after logging in to a TTY screen.  I've also not set those variables to anything else in /etc/profile, /etc/bash.bashrc, .profile/.bashrc.  Logging into the root user instead of my user account does not result in the errors.  Also, it seems from the error that the locales are being set to "", and I can't for the life of me figure out where it's coming from.  I've searched the forums for similar problems, and most of these errors included warnings about files and folders not existing, which doesn't happen here, and were resolved by re-generating the locale (I've tried it, no change).  The only one that came close was an old forum thread about guarddog generating a different set of locale's using incorrect locale definitions, which resulted in the same errors.  If anyone has a suggestion as to how to fix this (or a handy trick for finding all files where locales are set), I'm open to them.

    An update:
I've tried explicitly exporting both variables with en_US.UTF-8 in my bashrc, which has resulted in no change whatsoever.  Checking the value of these variables from my running system yields an empty return (i.e. the variables aren't set).  Can someone let me know if these variables are set on their system?  If they are, I'll see if I can set them manually and if that resolves the issue.

  • [Solved] Unable to log in (xdm), or access tty's (nVidia bug).

Ok, this is kind of long winded, but I'm really stuck on this one.
To start, I use xdm as my display manager, which I modified the appearance of (following this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/XDM) and then later installed xdm-archlinux.
I also installed the nvidia drivers (via pacman), which resulted in me not being able to see any of my other tty's, however at the time it didn't really bother me and I presumed it would be fixed one day anyway.
After updating (5th Feb); when I boot up I reach a black screen (presumably a broken xdm) and no way of getting into the system on an alternative tty.
I've tried starting in runlevel 3, but nvidia modules presumably are still starting and I still can't see anything.
    Any ideas?

Thanks very much guys, i solved the problem.
    For reference, here's how:
    booted into a live disk
modified inittab to not fire up a dm
    blacklisted nvidia and nvidia-utils
    removed nouveau from the blacklist
    rebooted
    removed xdm and all settings
    installed slim
    logged in with eye-candy
switched nvidia and nouveau back around
    reboot
    job done.

  • How do I disable the TTY option on my i phone (Version 5.1.1.)

How do I disable the TTY Option on my I phone 4 (Version 5.1.1.)

The only time that setting should not appear is if there is a sim in your phone from a non-supported iPhone carrier. Then, TTY can be turned on by default. So, try this:
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings.
That should get rid of the icon regardless.
