TTY problems with fresh install

HP Compaq 8510W
Fresh install of 32-bit Arch
I have had 64-bit Arch running on this laptop without incident---until the last upgrade broke Flash..:(  (But that's another story.....)
Now, I have just installed 32-bit Arch and--after doing some setup and configuring--the TTYs quit working.  Ctrl-Alt-F1, F2, etc. produces only a brightly-colored screen with random letters and numbers.  A re-install cured it, but only for a short while.
The symptoms suggest an issue with a video driver, but I don't know what driver is used when toggling to a TTY.
As I write this, I am running from Ubuntu, and all is well.
Any ideas??

Hello Neighbor,
Are you encountering these problems after starting an X session when you try to switch back to a console, or does this happen in the absence of Xorg?
What is your video architecture in that HP?  My Pavilion is Intel GM45 (intel915).  These types of problems went away for me about a year ago.  On Intel, if I recall correctly, it was imperative that you not load any framebuffer console mode kernel drivers in the presence of KMS.  The only module that can be loaded is the KMS Intel frame buffer support module.
You might check the modules you are forcing, and you might play with disabling KMS from the kernel command line.
I am in Northeast Pasadena (Brigden Ranch area).  Are you anywhere close?

    Hi Dude,
    Thank you for your response.
I didn't choose upgrade. I chose Fresh Installation.
Sorry for not giving background about the problem
The OEL 6.0 x32 was installed on a server with 64bit architecture, so the power of the server is not utilized well.
I want to completely replace the OEL 6.0 (32 bit) system with OEL 6.3 (64 bit)
Just I choose the mount point of /root and /boot and leave the all partitions with no formatting to save the old data
The above warning in the first post appears. How to avoid it?
    Regards
    Mahmoud

  • Namespace problem with freshly installed 8298731

We have a number of existing B2B installations patched to 8298731 that are working correctly. Recently we performed a clean install of a new server and patched it to 8298731 as well (upgrading to 10.1.2.3 in the process). It has been configured in the same way as the existing servers as far as we can tell.
The inbound EDIFACT messages from the new server all get "http://www.edifecs.com/xdata/100" as their namespace. Identically configured agreements with the same ecs/xsd files in the old servers yield correct namespaces, i.e. "urn:oracle:integration:b2b:FA335C8BE96E48F787F88928B5D21132".
As the same files are used the error should not be in SpecBuilder/Document Editor. We have not modified the files, but have tried uploading them fresh to both the new and one of the old installations. The files are fine.
The patch list from opatch displays only 8298731 for all the environments.
I have tried purging the new environment and configuring it again. I don't quite dare to purge the old working environments in order to test if that breaks them, as that would stop several development projects.
    What could be wrong?

We will try, I'll get back to you on that. It is on Linux (Red Hat 4, x86).
Meanwhile I have found that the ip/oem/edifecs directory differs between the installations. A difference that is easy to spot is that the JavaDoc in ip/oem/edifecs/XEngine/help/JavaAPI is for build 826 in the newly installed server (that doesn't work) and for build 837 in the ones that work. Binaries (such as .so files) differ as well.
Can it be that something is not updated in patch 8298731?
The old servers that work were all installed a long time ago and have been updated regularly with MLR patches. The new server that fails was installed, upgraded to 10.1.2.3 and then patched directly to 8298731. Perhaps that leaves some files unpatched, or perhaps the patching process failed without saying so?

  • Macbook Pro stuck in restart loop with fresh install

    Hello!
I have a Macbook Pro (Mid 2009) that I have been running Snow Leopard on up until now. I had been meaning to upgrade to Mavericks for a while, but had just never gotten around to it. Over the last month or so, my Macbook has been running really slow, hanging on the spinning beachball every few minutes for a few seconds (sometimes up to a minute or so). So I figured a clean start might be the best way to go, and while I'm at it, I might as well upgrade to Mavericks.
I backed up all my data, and then I created a Mountain Lion bootable usb (I had trouble making a Mavericks bootable usb from Snow Leopard, and since I had bought Mountain Lion for my desktop, I just decided to do a fresh install of that, and then upgrade to Mavericks). I had no problem booting to the usb, erased my hard drive and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion. However, after the install on the usb, my mac restarted and got stuck in a restart loop. It will chime, show the apple logo and spinning gears for a few seconds, then the gears stop spinning, and then the mac immediately restarts (this time displaying a message saying the mac has recovered from a shutdown in a number of languages), and the same thing happens again.
I was able to boot into the recovery partition, checked the permissions, found some that needed to be fixed, ran the repair permissions, verified the disk and was told the disk appears okay. Tried to then restart and same thing.
I have reset SMC, NVRAM, and none of these change anything. I booted in single user mode and ran fsck -fy, and recieved a message saying modifications were made, rebooted, same thing.
I have booted in verbose mode and the system restarts at the same point every time, right after displaying a message that says
SMC::smcReadKeyAction Error: (and then something with "BEMB", it goes by really fast so its hard to read exactly)
I have managed to boot into safe mode, but this has not made a difference. On one of my boots into safe mode, I went ahead and made a Mavericks bootable usb, and restarted the process: wiped the drive, installed mavericks, but I am in the exact same situation. I can still boot into safe mode.
I have seen some other issues that people have posted, but most involve the system freezing after the apple screen (not restarting) or do not involve freshly formatted HDs.
I'm just tying to find out if this is a hard drive issue, or if my mac itself needs to be retired. It has had a pretty long life (being 5 years old), and one of the RAM bays doesn't work (it is only running 4GB of ram, not sure if that can cause a problem with the boot cycle).
Sorry if thats a lot of information, I've been trouble shooting this for a few days. But thanks for any help you can offer!
    A strange note:
-when booting from the mavericks usb, I got stuck in the restart loop a couple of times. I managed to get past this by clicking the mousepad a few times right after the gears finished spinning. The mouse became visible, the apple screen shifted color a bit (went from a bluish gray tint to an orangish gray tint), the mouse became visible, and I got to the reinstall menu as normal. As far as I can tell the clicking may have been coincidental, but it was the only time I was able to boot the usb, and I wasn't going to risk restarting to test that, and then not be able to boot again.

Hey, thank you for your reply! I didn't have everything backed up, but I have a lot of my important stuff saved, though, so that's somewhat of a relief..
As far as my hard drive is concerned, would I have to send it in somewhere to get it fixed or would I just have to get a brand new one? If so, how much? Sorry if I seem a bit amateur, but this computer is my first personal computer, and I'm really lost without it!

  • Windows 8 Problems with initial instalation...

    All,
Can you please give me some advice on installing Windows 8 on a Macbook Pro 13 inc early 2011 model?
This is a compleatly fresh instalation onto a new Samsung SSD Hard drive... I do NOT have any instance of OSX on this computer (My Mac OSX Mountion Lion is on a external Thunderbolt HD). I downloaded the bootcamp drivers ONLY and copied them to a CD for instalation under Windows 8).
Without formating or initilising the Samsung Hard drive I inserted the Windows 8 RTM Disk and booted up the computer, and allowed Windows 8 to format a partition and it created 2 partitions (Recovery and System) inadition to my Windows 8 partition.
After instalation I incerted the Mac Drivers disk and instaled using Setup.exe.
After reboot I've noteced 3 major issues:
    1) No Audio - Divice Manager is reporting an error with The High Definition Audio Controler i've tried to run a repair, uninstalling the device and then reinstalling using the file on the disk but it dosn't fix the problem.
    2) I can't use the shortcut keys (FN) to set display brightness Keyboard backlighting etc.
    3) When I try to access bootcamp control panal I get an error "An error occerd while tring to access the startup disk settings.
Could you please point me to where I might resolve these isses Thanks in advance - CES

Apple does not yet provide any support for Win8 which means there are no drivers for Win8 which is why you don't have any wireless support for Win8. I suggest that if you wish to run Windows you revert to Win7.

  • Problems with fresh XP installation

    Hi there everyone!
I have Lenovo 3000 N100 0768 and I recently had some problems with Windows so I had to format my C drive and make a fresh install of Windows XP Pro SP2.
After I installed XP, my notebook is "another person" compared to what it used to be. From the first look, I see the following problems:
    - I only have 800 x 600 px and 1024 x 768 px screen resolution, although there were other resolutions before;
    - My Display Properties show (Default Monitor) which looks suspicious to me;
    - In Network Connections, I don't have Wireless Network Connection anymore and my notebook can't access internet through my router anymore;
    - In Device Manager, I have a big question mark beside Other Devices: Base System Device, Foxconn Bluetooth..., Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Network Controller and SM Bus Controller... which seems to me that there's a drivers issue;
Sound works fine, as I can hear.
Can anyone please help me with this? This notebook was working like a charm before I re-installed Windows.
    Any help is strongly appreciated.
    Thanks and all the best!
    Luffy

Yes - Windows XP won't automatically install the drivers for your Video, wireless, sound, etc.  You need to manually find these drivers.  If you would have burned your restore disks when you first got your computer you could have restored everything back the way it was when you first got your machine.
If you aren't expeirenced in finding drivers I would ask for help.  You should be able to download all the appropriate drivers for your machine off of Lenovo's website.  Most of them are just programs that you execute after you download them.  Once you have downoaded the drivers and run them - go into the Control Panel under System and Device drivers to see if it installed properly. You will then have to configure your display to the native resolutions - put in any security settings into your wireless card, etc.
This isn't hard - but is somewhat time consuming.  Windows 7 is much better at finding all the drivers automatically if you have it connected to a network and will do this for you automatically.  XP isn't quite as smart and only loads generic drivers.  That is why you are seeing lower screen resolutions, etc.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problems with re-installing OS X

    Hi,
I have recently had some problems with my iBook G4, it ran very slow and I could hear the Hard Drive constantly spinning. So I think about doing a fresh install of OSX to see if that would solve the problem, so I went to the apple support and saw that it would work if I followed the installation. Everything was working well. in the installation, I erased everything on the hard drive (I did have everything backed up...) and started the installation. (Just let me say here that I have 4 CDs that came with my iBook to install panther and it also came with a dvd to upgrade to tiger [I bought the day they relesed tiger]) on both installation disks once I satrted installing it said "there were errors installing this software please try again" I had tried many times again. and nothing has happened since.
Does anybody think they could give me a hand? it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Try this:
    1. Boot from your Panther Installer Disk. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
    7. Once the formatting has completed quit DU to return to the installer. Proceed with the installation of Panther.

  • Problems with Nforce4 install - audio/ethernet/raid

Just installed my Neo4 Platinum Nforce4 with XP Home SP2. I have a problem with the drivers. I went to the Nvidia site and download both the Unified Drivers and the standalone Kit for XP.
The unified driver set didn't seem to do anything at all, it seemed to quit half way through the install without giving me any finished message. A quick look in device manager and I saw about seven items with yellow warnings!
I then tried the standalone kit which worked better, however after the install I am still left with 3 items in device manager that are giving me warnings. Multimedia Audio Controller, Ethernet Controll & Serial ATA RAID controller. I have no audio at all, I just the BIOS is all is OK, as it is for everything else. In the sound section of control panel there is no audio hardware available.
Can anyone help please? I dunno what I could have done wrong. It's a fresh install.

I have now done eveything you've said. I installed the Nforce drivers off the CD, and then installed Realtek, Ethernet & RAID via Live update. I also tried to do the NVMixer & Nvidia Audio install install. I installed  realtek from the add/remove software menu. I then went into add new hardware and did manual install, show all hardware, have disk. Then I browsed to the Nvidia Audio codec folder on my desktop that I download. I was given an option of two drivers "nvmcp" & "nvmpu". I picked the first and ended up choosed "Nvidia audio codec interface" which then installed. It then appeared in device manager. However, when I clicked the audio panel in control panel I still get no audio device installed? I then tried to install NVMixer and when I try to run the application I get this message:
"the application cannot start because it could not detect any NVIDIA Nforce hardware on your system...."
What am I doing wrong? When I did the driver install there were two things listed in each driver "nvidia audio codec interface" and also "nvidia audio processing unit", which should I be choosing? Even if I try and installed the "MVP audio processing unit" I'll get a code(10) device cannot start in device manager. This is kinda confusing.
I also wondered about the RAID controller software. The silicon image drivers that came on the MSI seem horrible, they installed Java too. Is there any way to disable this controller? In the BIOS I can only see one option to enable RAID and when this is enabled device mananger will show an error on an "unknown device". I assume this is the NVRaid? and speaking of NVraid which is mentioned in big fat type on the back of the MSI box, so far I've seen or heard none of it during this installtion?

  • Tty "problem" with execNative

    Folks,
we have a "small" problem with the execNative stuff:
We have to automate the installation of a tool, which requires a couple of
    manual interventions...
One of that is the restart of some software on a different node, and once
that's done, we need to send a "c" for continue to the original task on the
    initial server...
We try to minic that be using expect and the spawn/wait functionality.
The problem seems to be, that the execNative is taking away all tty's, and
that exepct can't then send the signals to the "right" processes...
Here's excerpts from what we try to achieve:
    SPS xml code:

a.) We need the redirection of the STDIN/STDOUT/STDERR at the first line:
    ./install_pai_no_dmgr.exp "$SOLUTION_MODULE" "$PSA_PATH" "$LOG_DIR" "$TMP_PAI_DIR" "$BASE_DIR" > ./install_out.log 2>&1 </dev/null &
b.) The retarget clause/statement is executed!
c.) The "part2" script is started!
d.) The "c" is send! (aka, the kill will be executed!)
e.) The "c" does not reach the correct process, aka: the process started via:
    spawn ./startInstaller.sh -m FULL -i [lrange $argv 0 0] -a [lrange $argv 1 1] -l [lrange $argv 2 2] -t [lrange $argv 3 3] -b [lrange $argv 4 4] -p true
    Any clues?
Do we need to work out something different for that stuff?

I don't think the console font is the problem. I use Lat2-Terminus16 because I read the Beginner's Guide on the wiki while installing the system.
    My /etc/vconsole.conf:

    FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
showconsolefont even shows me the characters missing in the file names; e.g.: Ö, Ä, Ü

Do you already have an AS running on this machine? If you're doing a reinstall, did you remove the inventory and all appropiate registry settings?

  • Preserving play data with fresh install

Due to a catastrophic error and probably too much trying to repair it without assistance, I'm forced with the prospect of uninstalling iTunes (9.0) and reinstalling 9.2. However, I've accumulated 7 years of playlists and play data that I'm unwilling to lose. Does the assembled wisdom here believe that there are files within the iTunes folder that, left alone, will remain in place after a complete uninstall and reinstall?
Specifically, I see rather large files in C:\(user)\Music\iTunes (OS = Vista 64-bit) with names like iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml, many of which appear to have been updated the last time I was able to launch iTunes.
Is the wise course of action to back up (or move entirely) those files, perform the un/re-install, then move them back into the iTunes folder?

So, I've backed up my entire iTunes folder, ran the uninstall directions for 64-bit Vista, uninstalled and deleted everything as listed at the appropriate window in http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/, and the installation still refuses to complete. The first attempt threw an error listing an insanely long registry key. Subsequent attempts using the Repair option in the installer says the install has completed successfully, but iTunes Helper then throws an error reading
"Apple Application Support was not found.
"Apple Application Support is required to run iTunesHelper. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again.
    "Error 1"
For the record, I've had zero problems with iTunes since its first Windows release (including syncing with two different iPods over the past three years). It wasn't until I was forced into the 9.2 upgrade to sync my new iPhone4 (from 9.0.something) that I experienced this problem at all.
Since I can't get my iPhone serial # without iTunes, and can't launch iTunes, I can't get through the procedure to open a support call.
If anyone has any insight into how to get out of this ridiculous situation, I'd appreciate it.

  • Problems with new instalation of Photoshop Elements 12

    Windows 7
I have had continual problems with PE 9 with error messages to uninstall and reinstall Error 16.
So I thought buy version 12 that should do the trick BUT NO I uninstalled version 9 and installed 12 from disk on the 20th August.
Updated with Application Manager and all was well. Yesterday will not load and Error 16 as before. Tried run as administrator and was told I needed a newer version of Update Manager. Downloaded and installed version 8 still no joy and this then updated to Adobe Creative Cloud. The Application still will not open and I am getting fed up with Adobe applications, when they work their fine but I have no luck getting them to work long term.
Having bought this I am reluctant to move on and incur the cost of an alternative but I am fast running out of patience with Adobe
    Any Hep Would Be Appreciated

Thanks for link. Worked through Windows Vista/7 settings got to Set permissions but no Adobe PCD folder. Uninstalled and reinstalled PE 12 software 5/9, PCD now there and application running OK as was the initial installation.
6/9 on start-up,  Creative Cloud identified update for PE 12, Application Manager appeared and I run update, after, application running OK and Adobe PCD still there. Checked settings and permissions against link document permissions not as suggested but application working so made no changes. Will the application continue to work, that’s the next question, from previous experience with the initial installation and with PE 9, I have my doubts.
If the loss of Adobe PCD is the cause of the problem, what makes it disappear ?
