Tune-up Suggestions

A friend of mine has a G4 iMac (Sunflower), running 10.2.8, and has asked me to come over to look at her machine. She says it needs a "tune-up" and needs help.
By a tune-up she means that she is getting a lot of "application quit unexpectedly" messages even when she only has one or two applications running.
She usually has her computer sleep all night so I suspect she hasn't run the CRON scripts in awhile. I also suspect she hasn't repaired permissions in some time. I'll do both for her. I was also going to install ONYX and clean out her Cache and Temp files.
Does anyone have any other suggestions that I might be able to check or help her with.

I'd go ahead and give the following troubleshooting steps a shot:
1. Try the iPod troubleshooting assistant:
2. Restart the iPod Service
3. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service
4. Empty your Temp directory and restart
5. Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed
6. Change your iPod's drive letter
7. Remove and reinstall iTunes
8. Disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items
9. Update, Reconfigure, Disable, or Remove Security Software
10. Deleting damaged or incorrect registry keys

I'd start at the top and work through the steps until iTunes recognizes your iPod nano.

It is simply same as

Optimize iMac for FIOS with Apple Broadband Tuner

I am a recent Mac convert and am trying to optimize my Apple settings for an iMac 27" for Verizon FIOS, I downloaded the Apple Broadband tuner as suggested by Verizon, but do not know how to use it to optimize my settings.

You simply double click on broadband tuner and it sets your sysctl variables to the values shown. I think these buffer values may be outdated at this point.

I have an iProblem with my iPod

Did that horrible, horrible joke get your attention? Great! I recently got a video iPod and a MacBook Pro, both my first mac products as I have lived in the dark ages for windows for quite some time. My problem is that my iPod was formatted for windows, not mac (i got hte mac like a month ad 3600 songs later). As a result, while the macbook recognizes the iPod,itunes does not. While I am proficient with windows products I know very little about Mac, so I thought I'd list a few details:
-At first the iPod just couldnt charge with the MacBook Pro. I could still transfer songs to it via iTunes which recognized it in every other fashion apart from the charging thing.
-Like an idiot, I downloaded some software updates for MacBook Pro and the iPod this week. You would think that as a windows user I would have realized that any free software update would only cause more problems, but I had been living in relative Mac bliss and thought all was finally right in the world.
-I realize that I can just restore the iPod and format it for Mac, but I would lose 3600 songs compiled from about 4 different sources, all PCs. Is there any way I could find the song files on my ipod, transfer them to the MacBook, and then put them in iTunes, without going through iTunes? Like the way you can just drag and drop a file from one folder to a different one.
-Failing that, can I somehow remove the software update I installed this week? I'd go back to having the charging problem but I can always find another charging source.
The iPod and the Macbook were bother incredibly expensive luxury items for me and I love them but am pretty disappointed by this. Thanks to all who can help me, I don't know how I'd repay you but I know in the past I've actively volunteered my input on windows discussion boards - maybe a year from now I can help somebody with the same problem, heh.

See my reply to "Transferring Tunes" . Suggestion: From what you said, it sounds like you could easily connect this iPod to a Windows computer. Go back to the computer where you have the 3600 songs. Get the files out of the folder where they reside and put them on the iPod as data (your iPod has to be set up for disc use. So you will then have your music on there as the iTunes music AND the data files. Take that iPod to your Mac. Drag those files from the Finder, where you will see them on your iPod, which will mount like an external disc. (It was set up for disc use). Drag those files to your iTunes Library in the Source List (on the left) in iTunes. You might have to drag them into some interim folder on your harddrive first, like the Music folder within your User.

Every time I try to restore my phone i get error 3149?

I've done everything suggested in the online help category for error codes, my internet connection is working very well, my usb cable connections are fine, I don't know what else to do to get rid of this error so i can restore my I.O.S on i tunes, any suggestions?

Instead of 3194, maybe it is 3149? If so, that is generally an error that is displayed if you are trying to install an iOS other than the current one, or your device is jailbroken. Do either of these refer to what you are trying to do? Your profile says iPhone 4, so the latest iOS for that device is iOS7.1, is that what you are trying to install? Are you just connecting to iTunes and doing a restore, or trying to download the iOS from another site?

Student I-pad mini. Message says, "Ipad is disabled" connect to Itunes.

Very interested in getting I-tunes to restore from backup this I-pad mini. However, it won't recognize that I-pad is connected and directs me to enter numbers into the I-pad while the screen is blank, except for the message "I-Pad is disabled. Connect to I-tunes."

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Saving project as MP4 file or .mov file

I want to burn my finished project as a DVD but my burning program needs it to be in a .mov or MP4 format. Can I save my project as such??

The project file is the project.prel. You cannot change the project file (project.prel file) into a project.mp4 or project.mov file.
But, what is possible is to export the Timeline content of that project.prel file to a file whose format has a .mp4 or .mov file extension.
For Premiere Elements 11 on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit, I would suggest
for the .mp4
Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD with Presets = MP4 NTSC DV Widescreen - using default export settings
for the .mov
Publish+Share/Computer/QuickTime with Presets = NTSC DV 16:9 - using default export settings
If you have a HD source on your Timeline and your destination is a DVD-VIDEO widescreen on DVD disc, you forced into the
properties of the DVD-VIDEO product, namely 720 x 480 16:9 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second (with 16:9 flag stretching
the 720 x 480 to 856 x 480 for display after encoding).
But, if you have a HD source in this project that just produced the DVD-VIDEO widescreen on DVD disc, you can opt to export
a file with the same resolution as the DVD or export to a file with a resolution comparable to the HD source. Please clarify and
we can fine tune the suggested export setting accordingly.

P505-S8980 not uploading to MP3 player in stereo

I have been using a Sansa MP3 player since before having this computer. It was uploading in Stereo until I attempted to us a ion Profile LP turntable to transfer LP's to MP3 AND CD formats.
ion uses i-tunes and it did something to my sound system when I uploaded i-tunes.
I have since uninsalled all files related to i-tunes.
Suggestions?

Are you referring to protected AAC files that you purchased from the iTunes store? If so, they are not mp3s, and cannot be converted into mp3s. All you can do with them is use iTunes to burn them to an audio CD.
If they are unprotected files, such as iTunes Plus purchased files, or AAC files that you ripped from CD, then you can use iTunes to convert them to mp3. Look in iTunes Help under "Saving a copy of a song in a new file format."

What if i can't get verification for a digital download authorization code

I am having trouble getting my authorization codes for a few of my discs accepted by I tunes any suggestions?

You won't find an option to open an application in Rosetta unless it is Universal Binary. Since the app in question is not UB, the check box will not appear.
If I am not mistaken, the Myst games use Quicktime. Since the game, itself, is running in Rosetta, it will probably need to run Quicktime in Rosetta. Try setting Quicktime to open in Rosetta. Let us know if it makes a difference.

Please Help - Video Playback Problems

I have followed all the instructions provided by iTunes support in an attempt to fix problems with video playback. They did not help. I downloaded 4 video files that would have smooth audio sound but skip and freeze continually throughout the entire video.
This problem 1st occurred right after I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and then a purchased video. One point of interest is that all of my old video files from earlier versions of iTunes still work fine as they always did.
Could anyone please help me to resolve this issue?

I have had the same problem. I even bought a new 256mn video card and it did nothing. I have done everything i-tunes website suggest and nothing has helped.

WEIRD ACTIVITY - started with random activation of Voice Over Utility

Ok, really weird s**t happening with my PowerMac G5 running OSX 10.4.5 - while operating Logic Pro, the Voice Over Utility suddenly activated. I went in to disable it and noticed that Restart, Shut Down, and Log Out repeat in the pull down Apple menu. So in descending order, it is: Sleep, Restart, Restart, Shut Down, Shut Down, Log Out, Log Out. Everytime a website loads in Safari, a small audio sample of a sleigh plays. What the f**k is going on? Anyone else experiencing anything similar? Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Not really weird. I assume that a command in Logic Pro (or a shortcut you've set yourself) is cmd-F5 or something similar. This is the keystroke to activate VoiceOver.
Once VoiceOver is activated, it does duplicate the commands on the Apple menu—you'll notice that the second occurrence of each has no ellipsis, showing that the dialogue box that would normally appear will be inhibited. Similarly, in Safari, when a page is loaded, VoiceOver signals completion of loading to the blind user by the little sleigh tune.
Suggest you investigate the shortcuts in Logic Pro and change any that conflict with the system (via System Preferences—>Keyboard and Mouse).

ITunes Cannot Connect To Store

I am trying to download wikihow to my Itunes on my desktop. I keep getting the message Itunes cannot connect to the store. What can I do about this matter?

i have tried for three days to connect to istore, keep getting the saame message - itunes could not connect to the itunes store, network connection timed out. make sure network settings are correct and network connection is active. i haven't a clue what this means.
i tunes support suggested installing most recent version - done, and windows xp service pack 2, windows one care says this has been done.
i have run diagnostics (in itune) all ok except i pod touch sync test -failed, whatever that means, again how do i fix it?
life is too short for all this, all i want to do is browse music, and what have i got, - a white elephant.
please please please can some one out there help a non computer literate person out. i go on holiday in 12 weeks and would like ipod to come too!!!!!!!!!
