Tunnelling, SSH setup through mbp AirPort help!

I've been able to setup SSH tunnel using applescript editor/terminal,
and this works fine with both firefox/Vuze when using ethernet,
but when I use AirPort(wireless) tunneling doesn't work anymore.
Any tips on how to configure AirPort or is it something I should add to Applescript editor?
If there's a program that allows SSH config without needing applescript editor please recommend as well.
Thanks in Advance

Hi
just to add my 2 cents here--this problem is the subject of at least 2 other threads on this forum. I have a Netgear router and experience frequent connection drops--not specifically streaming related. And I have read others having probs with their Airport Extreme base station.
Every attempt to change router settings to solve the problem has come up empty.
I have come to the conclusion it's an OS or airport card issue, and Apple is annoyingly silent.

    Create a 'location' for home and a 'location' for home. Then switch to the appropriate one. See KB 106653, Using network locations in Mac OS X.

  • Setup through ethernet? HELP!

    i have a HP LASERJET P2055DN; I have always had the printer setup to my desktop via USB cable, but the USB cable port has broken off the inside of the printer. I went to staples to figure out if theres any other way i could hook my computer and printer up without the USB and they suggested by ETHERNET cable.
    As of right now, I have the ethernet cable connected from my printer to my router. When i go into a word document to print, it shows the printer as either connect and "ready", but when i hit print, nothing happens. OR it shows up in my printer list as "offline", and then i right click on it and click on "use printer online". and still nothing happens.

  • Tunnelling web traffic through ssh

    for tunnelling web traffic through ssh, it says here
    http://wiki.freaks-unidos.net/weblog...fox-ssh-tunnel
    that i have to set only the SOCKS Host text field in the edit>preferences>advanced>network>connection>settings
    to localhost and the port i used for ssh but what about the other fields like http,ftp,gopher,and ssl proxy, shouldn't i need to set those too? if not why and what are those fields for anyway?
    btw, is it possible to view streaming video like youtube.com while using a proxy? if so, then how would i go about it?

    jordi wrote:
    ssh -D 4444 (or any other port number) youruser@yourserver
    see the manual:
    -D [bind_address:] port
                  Specifies a local ''dynamic'' application-level port forwarding.  This works by
                  allocating  a  socket  to listen to port on the local side, optionally bound to
                  the specified bind_address.  Whenever a connection is made to  this  port,  the
                  connection  is  forwarded over the secure channel, and the application protocol
                  is then used to determine where to connect to from the  remote  machine.   Cur‐
                  rently  the  SOCKS4  and  SOCKS5 protocols are supported, and ssh will act as a
                  SOCKS server.  Only root can forward privileged ports.  Dynamic  port  forward‐
                  ings can also be specified in the configuration file.
    streaming videos like youtube.com will be possible... surfing the web will be the same as without socks proxy...
    I suggest to use a addon like FoxyProxy if you use socks proxy's a lot.
    1) I already know the ssh part, im talking about the configuration in firefox, sorry if i didn't make this clear.
    for tunnelling web traffic through ssh, it says here
    http://wiki.freaks-unidos.net/weblog...fox-ssh-tunnel

    to localhost and the port i used for ssh but what about the other fields like http,ftp,gopher,and ssl proxy, shouldn't i need to set those too? if not why and what are those fields for anyway?
    2) and another thing about streaming videos, why is it that some proxies i have used before don't allow streaming traffic through?
    ok it says here for vpn
    http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/sDefi...213324,00.html#
    An additional level of security involves encrypting not only the data, but also the originating and receiving network addresses.
    3) so how would the routers know where to route the data if its encrypted? and how would i go about implementing that?
    4) btw, is ssh tunnelling an implementation of vpn?
    5) another question i have would be that for ssh tunnelling, it works at the transport layer onwards so only applications which are designed to use the port would go through the tunnel and be encrypted right, other apps would not go through the tunnel. On the contrary, IPsec works on the network layer so all information above the network layer whether they use UDP or TCP or whatever ports for TCP would go through the tunnel and be encrypted. Are the above statements correct?

  • How to connect a Sony Bravia TV to the internet through your Airport network

    Since it took me a lot of time to figure out how to connect my Sony Bravia TV to the internet through my Airport network, I better share how to do it. Hopefully saving others a lot of time.
    My 32EX600 Sony Bravia TV is Ethernet connected to my Mac Mini, which is part of my Airport network, together with another Mac, an Airport Extreme Base Station and an ADSL modem/router. Moreover, the Mac Mini is connected to the TV by HDMI.
    Whatever I tried in the TV’s Wired Network Set-up (Auto, or Manual with manual IP, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS IPs), I couldn’t get it right. Cable Connection and Local Access were mostly OK, Internet Access always Failed.
    The solution lies in the Sharing panel of the System Preferences of the Mac Mini. In the Internet Sharing item of that panel, you should choose to “share your internet connection from WiFi to computers (the TV in this case) using Ethernet“, and NOT (as I had chosen before and seemed so obvious) “share your internet connection from Airport to computers using Ethernet“. After that change, the Bravia Network Set-up, using the Wired and Auto options, flawlessly connected to the internet. No expensive (Sony) WiFi USB dongle needed.

    I have now had a detailed reply from Sony Europe and the way to do this is to:
    1.       Press Home on the TV Setup
    2.       Use the right and left arrow to select Setting.
    3.       Use the up and down to select Network, press Enter.
    4.       Select Network Setup.
    5.       Select Wireless setup.
    6.       Select Scan
    7.       Select your network
    8.       A new screen will appear asking for entering the security key.
    9.       Enter your WPA2 key.
    10.   Select Enter.
    11.   It will take you back to the same screen asking for entering the
    security key.
    12.   Press the right arrow.
    13.   Select Auto.
    14.   Press the right arrow.
    15.   Select Save and connect.
    These instructions are not the same as shown on the TV but they worked fine for me so they may help others with a similar problem.

  • How on earth could I be connecting to the Internet through my airport express when it is not connected to anything?

    I'm not entirely displeased with the situation but I cannot see how I could be connecting to the Internet through my airport express when the Airport is not connected to anything.
    Weird huh?
    I have a separate non- Airport wireless network connected to the Internet.  I had previously set-up the Airport to link with this network but disconnected it (by resetting it) as music streaming was unlistenable due to frequent drop out.  I now just have the Airport Express as a standalone wireless network only connecting to the stereo to stream music from devices.
    My devices are only connected to the Airport network with cellular data off. Yet I can still connect to the Internet AND listen to streaming music (without drop-out no less).
    I don't want to fix it but I would like to know how the frag it could happen so i don't screw it up accidentally.

    I would say you still have something of the previous setup.
    To be sure you don't mess up, save the configuration.. go to the top menu area of the airport utility and export configuration.. which will land on your computer.
    Now you can recover at anytime to the current setup.
    How it works.. that is magical ..
    Open the airport utility.. edit.. and take a screenshot and post it of the following pages..
    Internet wireless network
    THen we can tell you how it is working.

  • Mac Book pro can't connect to Internet through Apple airport extreme base station

    I had problems connecting to the internet in the past with my macbook pro.  One day it suddenly started working again but then I bought a second apple TV I lost connectivity.  I have tried changing the IP address manually and while it shows me connected to the wifi I am still with out internet.  When I hooked up the new Apple TV that I bought it booted my computer from it's ip address.  The apple TV though wouldn't work and now nor would my computer.  I ended up setting the Apple TV's ip address manually and now it works fine. My computer on the other hand does not no matter if I set it manually or not.  Even if I plug in the ethernet cable from the base station it doesn't work.  It show that it has a self assigned IP address.  After I set it manually it shows that I am connected both via wifi and the ethernet cable but I can't connect to the internet.  If I plug the modem directly into the computer bypassing the base station I get internet and it is using the IP address that worked originally.
    It has something to do with the connection from the base station to my computer but this is odd considering every other device I have: iPhone 4, apple tv, apple tv, apple mini with retina display all work perfectly via wifi (newest apple tv had to be set manually as I stated above but now works fine).  When I check the ip of the base station itself it seems to be different from the ip of the computer when the computer was connected directly to the router.  I don't understand why my computer now can't connect to the internet via the base station whether it be wifi or by ethernet.  Can you please help me trouble shoot this?
    I have an AirPort Extreme base station which allows up to 50 users and a 30 meg connection speed.
    I have a MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2009), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

    It has something to do with the connection from the base station to my computer
    I don't think so..
    I just posted a reply which totally vanished.. strange strange website now.
    Please post some screenshots of your AE setup from the airport utility.. I want to see the summary page, then the network and internet tab.
    Please tell us what modem you use.. is it a router??
    If you have satellite or 3G wimax etc service they often are limited to 5 IP addresses... the AE takes one and then 4 more devices can join .. no more.
    You need to also give us the screenshot of the IP you are getting in a computer that works.
    EDIT
    Sorry this is half double post.. the previous page refused to display.. now it has returned..

  • Remote Desktop Connection won't connect to ip address through my airport extreme?

    I can't seem to get my RDC to connect through my airport extreme. I know it must be a setting on my airport extreme, but can't figure it out.
    When I hardwire the ethernet cable from the modem to the computer it connects fine, and when I set up a hot spot through my iphone, it also works fine every time as well.
    I've made sure to add "Windows Remote Desktop" through the port setting in Network settings on the Airport. Can someone please help me??
    Many thanks in advance...

    Hello Jedid4n. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    Do you have the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) configured as the remote base station in a WDS with the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) configured as the main base station? In order for the AX's Ethernet port to be enabled, the AX would have to be set up as either a remote or relay in a WDS.

    Do you mean to say you already have a wireless network setup and thought by buying the Airport Express you just could use it for wireless music alone?
    The Airport Express is chiefly a wireless router first, with the wireless music and printing as extra's.
    It can be used for streaming music alone, but I think it needs to talk to network time servers and thus it gets screwed up over time not being on the internet. Also by your using your computers wifi for music streaming, no internet with your other router.
    So it's a all Airport Express or back to a stereo mini cable.

    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom

  • How to setup DNS behind Airport Extreme and ISP that will not reverse DNS

    Hi,
    I am having issues setting up my Mac Mini with SLS. Right now my server is connected to the internet through my Airport Express. It gets a static address from the router (10.0.1.13). The router also has a static address from my ISP. I own the domain redcedarpoint.com. I have set the A record to point to my static router IP address. I also setup a CNAME for server.redcedarpoint.com to the same address.
    During the initial portion of setup SLS sees my ISP's domain versus my own domain and incorrectly fills the local domain name. I manually changed these to redcedarpoint.com and called the server 'server'. This puts server.redcedarpoint.com into all the host names. Everything seems to work, but now all my users get email addresses like [email protected] versus [email protected]. I have manually set mail host name to redcedarpoint.com (although this is wrong I think). It solves the email addressing issue, but now postfix gives me a warning about a duplicate:
    +Jan 27 21:20:45 server postfix/postmap[70670]: warning: /var/amavis/local_domains.db: duplicate entry: "redcedarpoint.com"+
    My question is: What should I fill in during setup and how should I setup DNS from my hosting service.
    By the way, I am also trying to funnel all inbound and outbound email through my premium Google Apps subscription.

    The first one is easy...
    Jan 27 21:20:45 server postfix/postmap70670: warning: /var/amavis/local_domains.db: duplicate entry: "redcedarpoint.com"
    You have redcedarpoint.com set as both the domain name and the hostname of the server. That is not correct:
    mydomain = redcedarpoint.com
    myhostname = redcedarpoint.com
    In this case, myhostname should be the reverse DNS hostname that the recipient mail server would see on outgoing mail - typically this would be something like 'mail.redcedarpoint.com
    You should also fix the mydestination parameter so that it includes your domain name as well:
    mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost, dmcwatering.com, internationalcardio.com
    mydestination identifies the domains this server accepts mail for. In this setup it will accept mail addressed to @mail.redcedarpoint.com (assuming you fix myhostname, as above), @localhost.redcedarpoint.com, @localhost, @dmcwatering.com and @internationalcardio.com
    Nowhere here does @recedarpoint.com appear, so users won't get mail addressed to [email protected]
    It's easiest to just add redcedarpoint.com to the list of domains the server handles mail for.
    how should I setup DNS from my hosting service
    Your subject implies a reverse DNS question, but there's nothing in this post about reverse DNS. Other than that, you should have an MX record for your domain that points to the public IP address of your router.

  • ITunes and playback through an Airport Express.

    Here's the scoop: Had this problem big time last year. Then, it went away...
    OK. Play music using iTunes through an Airport Express, through either wireless AND wired technology.
    Here's what happens: 1) Play music. 2) Music stops playing. 3a) Sometimes the music starts where it left off. 3b) Sometimes the music starts a few seconds later as if it played during the outage.
    OK, The bizarre bit: I've watched it do this. The clock just stops out of the clear blue. Then starts up again. Oh, the really bizarre part, and what happens more often than the earlier problem is that the clock will speed up to what would have been the correct time if it would have kept playing. Like 1---2---3____________________456789---10---11---12...
    OK, this is a MAJOR stability issue in my opinion. Nearly every time this happens, the iMac is the only thing on the network. I thought in the beginning (I've got another 'question' from earlier about this same issue) that it might be overhead over the wireless network. Since the wireless network is probably (I thought) the weakest link in the system, I thought that switching to wired on a switched 100base-T network would take care of any issues with potential congestion but NO(!) the problem continues...
    I can't tell you how embarassing this is when it happens infront of friends that use Windows machines exclusively. I could switch my library to a windows system that I have here but I have enough music that it almost fills my 80G ipod so it will take a L--O--N--G time to copy it over... Well, and I shudder to think what it could mean IF it works under Windoze, and not OSX.
    Is this a gimme to the RIAA? Boff the playback for some reason?
    I'm ticked.
    One 'genius' at the local (2 hours away) Apple Store genius bar told me to bring EVERYTHING in to the store for a week and they would play the music through iTunes and try to figure out what's going on. When I protested, they said to flash the Airport Express which I attempted but there were no updates. I ran Software Update and I had all updates. What about disk fragmentation?
    The system has max memory and a 250G drive so it shouldn't be an issue, right?
    It does it on every track so far. Give enough time and it happens. Well, sometimes it happens within minutes, and sometimes within hours.
    Oh, after it happens, sometimes (MOST of the time) I can't play the stopped song, OR any other track no matter HOW MANY TIMES I CLICK!
    This is driving me NUTS!!! HELP!!!
    I have a snapshot of it actually happening and Apple doesn't seem to be at all interested... HELLO APPLE! iTunes BLOWS on my system!

    I've been careful about that. We had a cordless phone that would totally blot out our 11-b network. All our cordless are now the newer type phones on the new frequency.
    I also thought that by going through the fast ethernet network here that I could avoid all the issues with interference.
    I'm using the ethernet port on the Airport which should bypass anything on the wireless. We have other AP's here but they are on other channels and even 11-a.
    I'm running out of ideas short of putting a dedicated Mac next to the music system which would be ridiculous...
    Is this a copout to the RIAA? Is it part of a DMCA thing? I guess my next question is: Is it supposed to be worthless? Is it supposed to work this way?
    The reason I ask is because I've heard from many people over the years that have the same thing happen over and over again... It's hard to believe but so is so much that happens in this world... I found out that a bill supported by the MPAA and the RIAA would have obsoleted ALL CD and DVD players and drives to make a 'required' copy protection scheme work! Anything is possible... Sadly...
    But this seems like an issue that Apple would want to fix for the sake of their customers?

    No you can't and the reason is Apple blocked the ability for Time Machine to backup over WIFI to a NAS connected to the AEBS. Though I was able to use iTimeMachine to enable the feature prior to the recent Leopard update 10.5.2 which seems to have closed this ability once again. Apple's comment to me was to buy Time Capsule claiming the feature was never supported over WIFI with the AEBS even though their advertising just prior to Leopard's release stated differently. A lot of us on this forum paid for an AEBS and NAS drive based on Apple's own advertising regarding a feature they later blocked/removed and are extremely upset with the way the issue seems to be ignored by Apple support who pretend there was never an issue to begin with.
