Turbo Boost to 3.9GHz on an Intel Core i7 iMac?

Hi Guys
Can anyone explain how the Turbo Boost 2.0 to 3.9GHz works on a 3.5gHZ Intel Core i7 iMac?  Should I have somehow paid for an extra "Turbo Boost 2.0" upgrade when purchasing the 3.5gHZ Intel Core i7 iMac? I didn't see "Turbo Boost 2.0" as an extra option in the checkout so I'm thinking that it's already in-built into the 3.5gHZ Intel Core i7 iMacs?
I use Final Cut Pro X extensively so the Turbo Boost 2.0 would be great.
Any thoughts appreciated.

it's built in .
Turbo Boost 2.0 automatically increases the speed of the active cores, so the Core i7, for example, can offer up to 3.9GHz. And by shifting core frequency in small increments, Turbo Boost allows the processor to manage performance without sacrificing efficiency.

Of course I can't throw it away since I get a message it's part of the sytem. I can show package contents and throw those away, but evidently not a good idea!!

  • My USB CF Card reader is not mounting on my 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5 iMac anymore. It was last week and worked fine to get pictures from my camera. Now it won't mount. I have tried another card reader and the same problem exists. Also tried different cards..

    Hi
My USB CF (Compact Flash) Card reader is not mounting on my 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5 iMac anymore.
Last week it worked fine to get pictures from my camera but now it won't mount at all.
I ejected it in the correct way rather than just disconnecting it but now i cannot get it to remount!
I cannot even see it in the disk utility or system profiler.
I have tried another card reader (a brand new one bought today) and the same problem exists. I've also tried different cards to see if that made a difference and they still arent being picked up on the Mac.
I have done all the usual things like rebooting, unplugging all other USB devices and then trying but nothing has worked.
I'm a photographer and I'm at my wits end here. I know the cards are fine as i have been using them without issue and they are also new.
Note: If I plug the camera in directly to the Mac, the Mac picks it up just fine as it always has done. Its just the card readers that it wont pick up anymore.
If anyone has any ideas at all other than the following (my so called friends advice) you'd earn my undting love:
    Buy a PC
Use the camera (Thats why i bought the reader in the first place - importing RAW files from the camera is SLOW!)
Replace your CF cards (I have three 8GB cards two of which i had never used til today and they dont work either!)
Buy a new card reader (this is the 5th one in two days - none work on the Mac)
    Many thanks in advance!
    LIsa

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

Can I upgrade a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo iMac running Leopard OS X 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard 10.6.3?

Yes this machine will run 10.6 with no problem
Sadly it will not be able to run 10.7 in the future though.

  • Slow Intel Core i7 iMac on boot

I have a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 iMac, 4 GB of Memory, 1 TB HD with 740 GB free. Whenever I log into my iMac, the harddrive IO spike (lots of reading) and it slows down my iMac to a crawl.
    How do I fix this?

    Your welcome!
My neighbor's across the street were suffering the same problem on two of there earlier Intel iMac's with far less resources than your i7. I couldn't actually get any-one person to admit (just grin's all around) to setting a bunch of App's to open at Startup/Login, but they now have two snappy iMac's and I had a great piece of homemade apple pie.

TRIM is supported on Apple-branded SSDs, but not third-party aftermarked SSDs.

  • Hyper-V stopped turbo boost and cpu park on my intel 4702mq processor?

    Hi I just got my lenovo thinkpad e540(core i7 4702mq ,256 hyper-x ssd, nvidea geforce 2gb...)
I installed windows 8.1  and server 2012 r2 to separate personal and business use.
The cpu was running at many speeds to preserve battery life (between 0.7ghz and 3.2ghz on turbo boost). After installing the  hyper-v  role, the speed in task manager is stale at 2.19ghz and
all the cores are not being parked even when the system is idle, is this a bug or that's just how virtualization work??
    Thanks!!

Performance mode probably means having higher voltages or higher "optimized" settings to run the system. Fail safe mode already spelt out its intentions to keep the system from failing.
For details, you can contact MSI for more information.
As I stated in my first post, I carefully went through all of the BIOS settings and the only thing I could find different between 'default' and 'optimized' is the setting for 'Intel Turbo Boost'.
I will post a question on the BIOS board about any other differences, but until then my original question remains...
...does anyone know of any problems (and hopefully FIXES) with the P55-GD80 and Intel Turbo Boost?

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n upgrade options for early Intel Core Duo iMac

I have an iMac from mid 2006. I recently purchased a Timecapsule - partly for the wireless back ups, and partly to upgrade my wireless network to 802.11n. There is a software upgrade from Apple that upgrades older 802.11 a/b/g Airport cards in the iMac to 'n' standard. Here is the link:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/D4141ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mco=MjIzMDkzNA
The page states that the upgrade is compatible "If you have a Mac with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (except the 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)". What it doesn't tell you is that if you have an early version of the iMac (pre-Sept 2006) that shipped with the Intel Core Duo Processor (note - not the Core 2 Duo) then the upgrade will not work. I have also tried to install Airport Extreme updates (2007002 and 2008004) and these report that the hardware is not compatible. Doing some searching around these forums and others, the issue with the original Core Duo iMacs not being upgradeable to 802.11n is out there - shame Apple weren't more explicit.
I have seen that there are various USB based 802.11n adapters available. Whilst searching on this topic, I also came across a site offering various Mac upgrades, including an upgrade to the Airport card to upgrade wireless capability from 802.11g to 802.11n. It looks like a straight replacement for the internal card - link here:
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?productsid=461
The company offering this is in the UK, but the product appears to be from a Sonnet, a US company. Does anyone out there have experience of installing this product (or having it installed) and can you comment on how it performs? Is it a seamless replacement for the original Airport card?

What it doesn't tell you is that if you have an early version of the iMac (pre-Sept 2006) that shipped with the Intel Core Duo Processor (note - not the Core 2 Duo) then the upgrade will not work.
If it says you need to have a Core "2" Duo processor, then it seems to me they are telling you very clearly that it will not work with the earlier Core (no "2") Duo iMacs.
The "late 2006" iMacs with Core 2 Duo (except for that one education model they mentioned) have wireless networking hardware that is 802.11n capable. When they were initially sold, Apple chose to NOT enable the "n" capability for some reason; maybe because the standard was still in flux and not enough testing had been done with the driver. Later, they enabled the "n" capability with a firmware update. But that was only possible because the wireless hardware was already capable of doing "n."
Earlier iMacs do not have this hardware so there is no way to enable it with a firmware or software update. 802.11g is plenty fast enough for Internet access (you won't notice a difference with "n"). If you are using Time Machine over wireless, it may take a while longer to do that initial backup (you could connected it by Ethernet cable when it is doing that initial backup), but subsequent backups are incremental, so the "g" versus "n" speed difference will not be as critical. Since your iMac is Core Duo (32-bit) and the future of Mac OS X is 64-bit, especially after Snow Leopard's release, it may be best to save your money and keep your iMac intact (not opened).

  • Looking at buying an 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 iMac.....NEED HELP!

Ok so I'm thinking about switching to Mac from PC and I need help. Here is what I plan on getting:
    3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
    2TB Serial ATA Drive
    AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
    My questions are:
    1. How long has this configuration been out? i.e. how soon will Apple upgrade the iMac to better CPU and GUI?
    2. Can you add a SSD later?
    3. Without being able to add a New GUI (and other upgrades you can do with a PC) how long would this iMac last with the way technology advances?
    4. What problems if any are the iMac experiencing right now?

I guess I should rephrase the question. How long has the 3.4 i7 and AMD Radeon 6970M been available in the iMac? What I don't wont to do is get the 3.4 i7 and next week a 3.6 comes out etc. I read the same thing from http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iMac
This machine was released in May 2011. The configuration you are quoting is currently state of the art for an iMac. Without knowing how you use your computer it's extremely difficult to say how long it will be useful. If you are professional musician or filmmaker where you tax the CPU's capabilities then spending the money when a significantly faster machine is released should make little difference to you. However if use the machine for basics like surfing the web, e-mail and some MS Office work this machine is overkill now and will be for many years. If you use the machine primarily as a gaming platform then you would enjoy it as long as the GPU keeps up with your gaming demands.
So the question back to you is how do you intend to use the computer?
