Turn completely off or simply lock?

I'm guessing these functions are similar to the sleep and deep sleep modes of my old 5th gen iPod video, but I'm not sure whether it's better for my battery consumption to press and hold the on/off button for a couple of seconds until the red slider appear...or simply press the off button quickly to turn off the Touch. Is one way preferable?
I've searched and can't find a definitive answer, so thanks in advance for any advice.

I rarely turned mine off when I had it, Diane, and I don't turn off my iPhone either. When it goes to sleep it will sever any WiFi connection so your battery will have an insignificant drain.

my iphone 5 died and when i went to plug it in to charge the apple sign came up and it wont go away it has been stuck for 2 hours. i cant turn it off because my lockbutton is broke. what do i do?

Make an appointment at an Apple Store to have your device examined by a technician. Or contact Apple Support. Get your lock button fixed then you can restore your phone.

  • My iPhone turns completely off while charging. Help.

Why does my iPhone completely turn off after a while of having the charger in? The only way to turn it on is by holding down the hold & home button which I believe is the reset button. After that I put the charger back in and stays on. It happened of the second time this morning.

If not jailbroken, restore the phone in iTunes.
FYI, there is no "hold" button.  The button on the top of the phone is the power button (AKA On - off).  To reset the phone, press both the home and power buttons fo at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears.

  • How do I fix this: my phone keeps turning completely off randomly

About every 2-5 minutes, my phone turns all the way off and all the way back on again. (With the apple logo and black screen). I have reset all the data on my phone multiple times but it doesn't work. It mostly turns off when I type. I am getting annoyed at this weird bug. I have brought my phone to the apple store by they did nothing for it. Nothing will work. How do I fix this problem

Have you tried to restore it? First back it up to your itunes account. Then restore it with a new ios 6 install.

  • Can't turn off iPad passcode lock in iOS 7

I searched these forums looking for the answer to this question. Some said that there is an option called turn passcode off under general, passcode lock. I don't have that in my menu. I have two options, Autolock and passcode lock. I have set autolock to never. When I go to passcode lock, and turn it off it simply asks for a new pass code. There is no option anywhere to turn it off. Is this no longer possible?

You should go into settings, general,, passcode lock. Enter your current passcode then you'll see the option to turn it off.

  • HT1212 im locked out of my ipod, and the screen isnt responding when i go to swipe to unlock it or when i swipe to turn it off. But, in the top left hand corner, there is an outline of a box. how do i fix this

im locked out of my ipod, and the screen isnt responding when i go to swipe to unlock it or when i swipe to turn it off. All of my notifications are there but i cant reply to any of them. My screen is completly unresponsive. But, in the top left hand corner, there is an outline of a box. how do i fix this?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • 2G 32GIG iPod Touch Keeps Turning Itself Completely Off????

I've got a 2g 32gig iPod touch that constantly turns itself completely off if I let it sit for 5 minutes or so. It's not locking...It's completely turning itself off. I need to reboot it to get it going again. I thought it might be the older 2v software so I've updated to the most current 3.1.3 or something. Still doing it. Is there anything I can try. I started the music playing and it keeps playing all night. However, once I let it sleep it will only come back on if I try and use it within a few minutes. After that it's off. The battery is fine. If it stays plugged into the USB it is also fine. I'm stumped. Doesn't make any sense.
Any tips or info would be greatly appreciated. This thing cost way too much for this to happen just months after the warranty expired.

    Have you tried:
    - resetting it:
Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the
Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restoring it from backup via iTunes
    - Restoring it to factory defaults via iTunes.

Since updating my iPad 2 to IOS6 and activating my icloud for backup, my iPad has permanently locked. Message on screen is "iPad Not Backed Up". I click ok but no response. Cannot turn power off and cannot restore via my pc itunes. What are my options?

Thanks to everyone who responded and related subject helped. Holding the home button and power button simultaneously for 10-15 seconds does unlock the screen. I can now use my ipad again. However, a futher problem has arisen since updating to IOS6 and activating icloud at same time, Although not sure if its related. The problem is that when connected to my PC the itunes message appears 'Cannot read ipad'. It instructs you to restore but keeps timing out after about 1 hour. This maybe internet issue but can't understand why itunes cannot read my ipad. May need to completely erase all content & reset. Or any other suggestions why this has happened?

  • Enabling lock screen on 'find my iPhone' to disable turning it off.

I have noticed that when you do a remote lock on an iPhone from the 'find my iPhone' app, it does not disable the phone from being turned off; completely making the app useless.  If I lose my phone and someone snatches it, they just need to turn it off and they are home free (while they jailbrake it, or whatever).  There needs to be a way that when 'find my iPhone' is enabled to request the phone to go into an emergency mode that disables use (remote lock) and disables the phone from being turned off.  If anyone knows a way to accomplish please let me know so I can activate this on my daughters phone (we had a scare a couple days ago, but it turned out to be in her locker : )).  Thanks.

    Hello, Zane.
Thank you for the question.  You may need to place your device into recovery mode and process a restore as new.  Below, I have included and article that will walk you through this process.  Before you process the restore make sure to back up all media.
