"Turn computer off" message - virus?

I recently lent my USB to a stranger in a coffeeshop and after inserting it back into my macbook pro, a box with the message "turn computer off" in five different languages came up (it was on a gray background, in case this sounds familiar). I had never seen that box or message before.
A technician told me not to worry about it unless the message came up again.
Any ideas what could have caused this?
How can I ensure no virus or trojan or anything like that was put on my computer (I installed the newest Norton AntiVirus a few days ago)?
Can I use the USB again or should I discard it?
Thanks, any help will be appreciated!

The kernel panics are USUALLY (but not always) caused by hardware issues. Including things connected to USB ports. But when that happens, usually it is something more complicated than a USB drive; for instance a printer, hard drive, USB hub, scanner or some device, versus just a solid state USB jump drive with no moving parts.
That said, the person who "borrowed" your USB jump drive might have "done something" to it (or tried to) that made it impossible for your Mac to handle it, or might have physically damaged it (bent the connector) or tried to damage your computer by putting some software on it that tries to install something on your Mac against your will. When the attempt fails, it can cause your system to crash or possibly cause the kernel panic. In fact, this is one way that "malware" accesses memory or tries to control computers, it causes the system to crash in a way that enables it to access or control the "frozen" computer.
I'm with BDAqua here, why would someone borrow a USB drive and then give it back to you if not to put something on it to then do something to your computer?

Did you actually download the installer from Apple or did you use Software Update.  You can download the installer http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Maybe I'm old fashioned but I would consider repairing permissions first using Disk Utility because something caused this to go wrong the first time.  And of course make a backup of your whole library first.  It shouldn't happen but some have complained about their libraries being wiped out by iTunes updates.  Better safe...

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Dathanb
You have posted in the Feedback About New Discussions forum.
As you are a first time poster, you seem to have missed the text at the top of this forum that says:
Please Read This Before Posting Here
If your question concerns a hardware or software technical issue, please do not post in this forum
Go to the main Apple Discussions page, select an appropriate product category and follow the links until you reach the correct forum for your post, then click the POST NEW TOPIC link. Because your post doesn't indicate was OS you are using on your iMac, I can't give you a link to the most appropriate forum.
Basically, though, the version of TechTool on the AppleCare disks is not compatible with newer versions of OS X and/or Macs (I can't remember which). If you don't get a satisfactory response by posting in the appropriate iMac or OS X forum, I suggest you take your iMac to the geniuses at the Apple Store. You can set up an appointment time for the same day online before you leave home.

  • [solved] can't turn computer off

    hello!
yesterday I wanted to turn compiz on so i typed:
    # compiz --replace
then the display gone a bit bad: I didn't have windows titles and all windows was in a bunch so I couldnt get to them.
    then I typed:
    # metacity --replace
and then the desktop retuned to look normally. (then I did some things with metacity and I got some error messages, but I dont remember what they was).
now when I type "metacity --replace" I got another error message:
    # metacity --replace
    No protocol specified
Window manager error: Unable to open X display :0.0
what it means and what should i do with it? (the desktop environment looks normally)
however, and that is the real problem, I can't suspend/hibernate/restart/shut down the computer. when I try to, it shows me weird black screen so I have to force the computer to turn off by pressing on the power button, and when I go to the computer after some time I see that it completely turned on... (all that functions worked until yesterday)
    what can I do?
I use arch with gnome on toshiba laptop.
    10x anyway.

well it seems that's not a hardware problem (feww.. )
because when I turn the computer off as narada wrote:
Shutdown without X: sudo init 0
    it does not turn on
then it something in the definitions.
I want to find the problem by doing boot log. so I tried to do what T-Dawg wrote in http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 88#p113288:
    T-Dawg wrote:
if your talking about the messages that appear after the Arch Wombat message but before the daemons load try renaming /etc/rc.sysinit to /etc/rc.sysinit2 and create a new /etc/rc.sysinit file with the same permissions as the original. In this file put:
    #!/bin/bash
    /etc/rc.sysinit2 2>somefile
that will echo standard error into somefile. If that doesn't give you the errors replace the 2 with & and both standard out and standard error will be logged into that file.
Make sure that new file is executable.
but I cant because it tells me that the filesystem is read-only.
how can I do a boot log?
is it ok to create /etc/rc.sysinit that will be look like:
    #!/bin/bash
    mount /dev/sda5 / -o rw
    /etc/rc.sysinit2 2>somefile
    or it might cause problems?

  • TM works perfectly until I turn computer off

I've been using TM since release and it's worked perfectly so long as I don't turn either the hard drive or computer off. If I do, upon restart TM seems to forget that it has already been backed up for days. It goes into endless "preparing" status eventually telling me that the backup failed due to lack of room (as if it's trying to do a full backup instead of just backing up the minor changes I made since the last time it ran). I've had this happen twice now. The first time it happened I used disk utility to partition/erase the drive (as per Apple's specs) and everything was fine for a few days until I turned the computer off. Then on restart it did the same thing again. Any suggestions? I have about 60GB of data on my computer- backing up to a 120GB Hard drive. There is nothing else on the drive except the TM backup and at the time of the last backup (prior to turning off the computer) there was more than 45GB of free space.

Have you tried walking it into the nearest Apple Store and asking for assistance there...?
I'm guessing you don't have Apple Care on it.

  • I updated, and now Firefox will not open at all on my computer. Tried numerous times to turn computer off and then on again. Everything else is closed.

I updated as I was asked. The computer was on for a while and then turned off. Now, it won't open firefox at all. A big red 'x' and an error message pops up. Message says: The procedure entry point XRE_GetFileFromPath could not be located in the dynamic link library xul. dll.
I can open an old internet explorer, but then I can't respond to your e-mails for confirmation as they must go thru the mozilla browser. I AM CONTACTING YOU THROUGH MY HUSBANDS COMPUTER.... NOT MINE CUZ I CAN'T RESPOND TO YOUR LINKS....
This is very frustrating. I just want my old browser and bookmarks back! Please help.

When resetting the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod fails to resolve a problem, the problem is likely due to a a hardware problem. An appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is then in order.

  • Problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off message.

A message on the printer reads that there is a problem with the printer or ink cartridges.  I turned off printer several times, I have replaced cartridges.  At the bottom it says to contact HP. What do I do to get my printer working again? I also need to delete other printers that are listed as ones that I can use.  I don't have any idea about these other printers other than the HP printer 6700, All in one.

Hi , I understand you are seeing an error stating there is an problem with the printer or ink system. If you have completed the solutions presented in the following document I suggest calling us: HP Officejet Printers - 'Problem with Ink System' Error Message Displays on the Computer During Setup. To reach somebody in tech support, what you can do, is use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
    Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

  • Reseting NVRAM turns computer off

    Power Macintosh G4 (Quicksilver 2002)
    Dual 800 processors
    128MB Memory
    Boot ROM: 4.33f2
    OS: 10.1.3
The previous logic board had the dual processors blown, for whatever reason. I replaced the logic board, tested the memory and other components, all seem fine.
The Apple Hardware Test CD tests everything fine.
It boots up and runs into the OS fine .. sometimes.
Sometimes the computer will begin to power on, then immediatly turn off. This happens about three times before I can get it going, then it works fine.
If I try to reset the PRAM, it begins to turn on, then it turns off.
I can get into the Open Firmware prompt, do the reset-nvram, I get an OK. When I type reset-all, it gets to the second line (I think it says Flashing ...) and then it immediately turns off.
I can duplicate the computer turning off when I try to reset the PRAM and reset-all every time.
Is there a way to perhaps re-flash the firmware?
Where is the PRAM actually located--mainboard, correct?
    Any help would be great!

I tried a different battery, and I also tried the software tools to zap the PRAM; however, the same problem persists. I even tried the little button on the mainboard.
I also get a notice in OS X that:
Speaker Connection: The device plugged into the speaker port is not recognized. Please unplug the device and plug it back in again.
I tried with and without the speaker plugged into the mainboard and I get the same error on every boot.
No sound either on boot. Never have, forgot to mention that one.
I'm beginning to be afraid that the mainboard is shot....

  • Turn display off without turning  computer off

Ok so this is driving me completely nuts. I know Steve Jobs hates buttons which is why we don't get a power on/off button on the display so how the **** do I just turn the display off completely? The only shortcut I found was to hit ShiftOptionEject which turns the display off but doesnt actually power it off, and if the computer tries to do something in the middle of the night (start a backup/start an EyeTV recording the display turns back on!!). This is driving me nuts. I'm almost at the point of selling this **** thing and buying a display with a ******* power on/off switch.

Yes you can sleep the display without sleeping the iMac.
The Apple remote is for operating multimedia applications with a Mac, and it can sleep and awaken a Mac, but not just the display.
There is some software that can extend the usefulness of the Apple Remote, such as Remote Buddy.

  • Hibernation - Why Turn Computer Off?

I got the widget called "Midnight"
    http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Dashboard-Widgets/Webcams/Miscellaneous/Midnight.sh tml
that allows me to put my computer into the "hibernation" mode. This is the mode you get in when your battery is close to empty.
By means of the widget, I can now choose this mode manually. The advantage is that my computer will start up much quicker this way. I am thinking about never turning off my computer ever again. Are there any disadvantages? I know that absolutely no power is needed in the hibernation mode.

Yes, a prolonged power outage after a storm, and you will eventually run out of battery.
Log file cleanup may be delayed if it is tied into Energy Saver/Sleep.
You don't want to leave your computer plugged into during a thunderstorm.
Eventually you will have to shut down.

  • I can't turn computer off.

Under apple menu, these do not work:
    About this Mac
    Force Quit
    Sleep
    Restart...
    Shut Down...
Choosing any of these has no visible results.
Previously, I was off-grid and trying to attacth an external hard drive with no success. Tried Time Machine and then Start Up Disk...
    Any assistance appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Nancy

    Thanks for emailing me!
I am a little afraid to do that because in the past--for a different issue--I was told by AppleCare to press and hold something like Command-Option-Shift and at the same time press and release the power button. That woked.
Latter at the Apple Store Genius Bar I was told that was really hard on the computer and I could have waited for the battery to run out.
    What do you think?

  • Dreamweaver launch turns computer off.  What's going on?

I downloaded and installed (twice) Dreamweaver using the steps I was supposed to.  During the install, I had to restart my computer.  Now, when I click START \ ALL PROGRAMS \ DREAMWEAVER to launch it, my computer performs a restart.  This is beyond annoying, as the 30-day trial offer does not have any allowances for things like this.  What can I do to solve this?

Provide system information and the info that is printed on the blue screen or logged in your System Event Viewer. Could be security/ network related, since DW obviously has a built-in FTP client. Or could be the live preview....
