Turn iCloud Drive off without file deletion?

Hi,
I accidentally turned iCloud Drive on because I was trying to get Mail Drop work (I was not successful).
Now, I wanted to sign out of my iCloud, but this appeared:
What do I do?
I was not signed in before and was completely fine with it.
Also, I have one more discussion open if you could help (restore i Tunes library from external hard drive back-up performed by TimeMachine):
Re: How to restore iTunes library from TimeMachine external hard drive backup after clean install

Look in the iCloud Drive in Finder, keep this simple. Close the box that is open, you are not ready to sign out yet.

  • After turning iCloud Drive on, no more local Documents

I turned on iCloud Drive today, and all my local Documents on my Iphone are gone. Even when turning iCloud Drive off again, they didn't reappear. Any chance to get them back ?

On OS X, don't the entire contents of your iCloud Drive synchronize with the hard drive of your Mac?
How can someone store files on iCloud that do not synchronize to the Mac? I know you can do this (in a way) with iTunes Match, and the forthcoming Photos App.
iCloud is not only iCloud Drive - there are also iCloud Photo Library (Beta), iTunes Match, iMovie Theater.
The paragraph you quoted is referring to the other iCloud services for large media files: music, photos, movies, not iCloud Drive, which is meant for documents - a common storage for all your documents, updated across all devices.
Music files: With iTunes Match, you can store your complete iTunes library in iCloud, after backing it up on an external drive.
Image files: With Cloud Photo Library (Beta) you can keep all original photos in iCloud and only optimised previews on your devices. iCloud Photo Library (Beta) is not yet available on a Mac, but will be released this spring (see: Apple - OS X - Photos Preview)
Videos: iMovie Theater keeps your movies in iCloud and off your devices.
What happens if I have 500GB worth of data in my iCloud Drive and I link a Mac with only 250GB to it?
Don't let it happen. Apple does not explain what will happen in any of the support documents for iCloud Drive:
iCloud Drive FAQ - Apple Support
Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support
From my own experience you will see plenty of cloud symbols for files that will not download to your Mac.
The general idea is, that the bulk of your data are media files, photos, videos, music, that will not use iCloud drive and are not synced to your mac. They will use your paid iCloud storage or iTunes Match storage, however.

With iCloud Drive open in Finder, View menu "as List" should work.

I have just updated to Final Cut Pro 10.1.4 - I have updated Projects and Events on my external hard drives (off the File menu). It's says under several projects 'missing file' - but they were all there working fine before I updated. I am working off 2 external drives - not sure if that would make a difference.

After the update each seperate connected drive should now have a seperate Library.
The older Projects and Events folders would have to be at the top level of those drives go be seen and updated.
Were all the necessary Projects and Events in the corrrct place before updating?

  • Unable to read an "iCloud Drive Saved" html file on my Iphone

    Hi,
I have saved an HTML file on my MAC to my iCloud Drive Docs folder.
Now I woud like to view that on my iphone.
I go to Pages, I can see the file, but cannot open it

Firefox reports that it is my default browser. I changed the default browser to Chrome and then back to Firefox, in case that's what you meant by "redo." Right-clicking and picking Firefox in the Open With menu works, but double-clicking the file or just picking Open in the right-click menu does not.
I don't know why this is. Could it be due to a version update? I've noticed that Google Notifier's "Go to Inbox" no longer opens up Gmail in Firefox either.

  • Is there a way to turn the iPad off without using the power button?

I have the new iPad air.
    LOVE IT!
One thing though...I have a folio style cover on it, magnet closure = power off.
The case does not allow for power button access, and there are times when I wish for a way to power it off without closing that cover.
Does anybody know if there is a gesture that can power it off?
If, not, needs to be one.
Or, perhaps, a desktop "button" that can do that too. It would probably be an app.
So, there's my question, thanks for any reply anybody can make on this!

Completely power off? no. But it will automatically to go sleep after a period of time. You can set the period of time, 2, 5, 10, 15 minutes or never. in 'settings, general, autolock'
Really, you don't need to totally power it down during its normal use. Mine just goes to sleep all the time and works just fine.

  • Can I access icloud drive documents without an internet connection

The answer seems obvious, unless copies are also stored on my Macbook for situations where Internet is not available.

Set the Finder Sidebar preferences so that the iCloud drive is included in the Favorites section of the Finder sidebar:
Then you can access the local copies via:

Everytime when I turn my Mac off, it always doing a FileVault backing up before shuts down. This backing up taking a long time, any idea what I shoud do?

You need not do anything. Leave the computer be. After it finishes the backup it will shut down on its own. You need to let it backup because this is the only time you can backup the computer.

  • Safe to turn external drives off w/o eject?

Hiya!  I've been using Linux for three months now, and Arch for a week.
I am curious about the need for ejecting USB external hard drives.  This is, of course, the recommended and default behavior in M$ Windows.  One is encouraged to always ejected before unplugging the USB cable or shutting down the drive.  This behavior was mirrored in Ubuntu.  I always ejected the external before turning it off.
In Arch, there is no eject.  I did install the eject function, but it does not pop up as a convenient context-menu in GNOME for usb hard drives.  Only cds.  There is the "unmount" option instead, which doesn't seem necessary.
My question is: Is it safe to just power on and off the external drive without doing any of the above?

For the record, the eject command will unmount something before ejecting, so for something like a usb that doesn't actually physically eject, I beleive all you're actually doing is unmounting it.
I usually don't unmount through the right click dialog because I've noticed that gnome will remove the icon from the desktop immediately even if the drive isn't fully unmounted. This means I really don't have any way of knowing when the drive is save to remove or not. Instead, I'll use this command from the commandline:
    umount /path/to/drive
That way I can know exactly when the drive is save to remove. If the mount point is in fstab, then you can do this as a user, otherwise you need root privileges.

  • Turning imac display off without putting it to sleep questions?

I like to leave my iMac on overnight but I don't want to put it to sleep COMPLETELY. Just to turn off the display. I heard you press control-shift-eject or do a hot spot on screensaver on system pref. But my question is, would it hurt the iMac in the long run for leaving it on overnight so much or it's made to last like that?
I talked to an apple specialist at the local apple store and he said these aluminum imacs are made to last even if you keep them on overnight? But would it overheat over the years? or I shouldn't worry so much. Sorry this is my first iMac. I have so many questions about it.

So it will not overheat no matter what?
If you are playing some 3D action game, or having the computer encode video for one hour straight, it may start to heat up. But then, the fans should kick up to a faster speed (you'll actually hear them), to keep the temp within the acceptable range. If the iMac is just sitting there, waiting for you to do something, it will not overheat. Now... If there is dust blocking airflow, or the Mac has some hardware issue that prevents the fans from running properly, then it is possible for a Mac to overheat, which may cause it to shut down unexpectedly or give you something called a +kernel panic+ (which is basically a system-level crash).
When a computer is running, for most users, it spends most of its time waiting for you to do something. If you are doing something simple like writing an email or web browsing, 90% of the time, it is waiting for you to do the next thing. If you have it doing something like ripping a music CD, during that time, it is working hard to finish as quickly as possible. But since most people do not rip CDs all day, most of the time, the Mac is coasting along, not working very hard. So, there is not much stress on the hardware most of the time it is turned on.
But if you shut down every night and start up every morning, one stressful time for the hardware is at startup. This is because all the components, such as the hard drive spinning up, display turning on, and the rest of the Mac are being powered up, happens at the same time. Waking from sleep is a similar process, and although it is not as bad as a full startup, it may happen much more frequently if the user is sleeping the Mac and waking it up frequently. That's why I suggested using sleep at the end of the day, to save power compared to keeping it ON, but once you have the Mac running at the start of the day, don't have it sleeping and waking numerous times throughout the day; just let it run until you are done for the day, then use sleep until the next day.

  • How do I turn Exposé/Spaces off, without access to System Preferences because I disabled it's space?

I accidentally disabled a column of spaces where I had my System Preferences running, in "Exposé and Spaces".
Now I cannot access my System Preferences at all.
I can see System Preferences as a running application in the doc and command tabbing though running applications. I can also get to it this way and see the menu bar on the top of my screen and click through the menus and drop down menus, however I cannot see any windows.
I know that I can open different windows for if the System by selecting something in the drop down menus. Then I see the selected window if I click and hold down on the dock icon of the system preferences. However, as soon as I try to click on the window it disappears.
I know that my problem would be solved if I could turn off Spaces but how do I do this if   I cannot access it though System Preferences?

After a long struggle and research I found a solution.
I discovered Spaces exists in the Utilities folder in Applications.
When I opened the application from here it gave me the 3 spaces I had assigned, vertically displayed, with the system preference window sitting, outside and fairly large, hovering, partially infront of it all the other screens.  After several tries of grabbing and disappearing it finally let me drag and drop the window into one of the screen.
    I am really relieved now!!

  • How can I turn iTunes Match off without an internet connection?

Hi all.  I find myself up s**t creek without a paddle.  I have subscribed to iTunes Match, which I find to be an excellent service.  However, I'm travelling (by ship) and don't have an internet connection for the forseeable future.  I recently, prior to departing on my voyage, scrubbed my phone and ipad for extra space, so I deleted all of my music content, knowing my music would be with me on my laptop.  However, now I want to walk around the ship and listen to my music, which I assumed I would be able to sync with my laptop.  Unfortunately, I can't find any iTunes or iPhone options to sync any music because it says iTunes Match is enabled.  There are no options to disable iTunes Match either.  I'm using the latest version of iOS (5.1) on an iPhone 4S purchased in Japan, as well as the most recent (as of 4/1/2012) version of iTunes on my Macbook Pro running OS X Lion.
Thanks for any help someone might offer.
    Rich Perry

I was recently able to connect my iPhone to a Wi-Fi network connected to the internet.  Only then did the option show up in the Settings app.  I'm not sure if that's by design or if it's a bug, but it's terribly inconvenient just at the moment I need to access the feature.  If it's by design, it's a poor design compared to most other aspects of iOS.

  • Is there any way to turn an iPhone off without pushing the power button (it's broken)?

Power button on my 4s is broken.  Is there any way to power the phone off besides the power button / slider shut down combination?

Assistive Touch, tap Settings App > General > Accessibiltiy > Assistive Touch > ON > tap new white screen button > Device > Lock Screen. If you touch and hold Lock Screen you will get the "slide to power off". This will turn OFF iphone. To turn iPhone ON, connect with USB cable to power, charger or USB of computer.

  • How can you turn the screen off without access to the power button and without using auto-lock?

We are using iPads that are locked down with Guided Access and secured within hard plastic mounts screwed down onto a countertop.  We can press the home button with a paperclip, but that's it.  We don't want to use auto-lock because there might be several hours where the terminals aren't used, but we don't want them to go to sleep during business hours, otherwise we'll have to grab a paper clip and turn them back on.  Also, if we set the auto-lock to several hours, then the iPads wouldn't be off for very long at night.  I want to turn them off when we close at night, but it's challenging to open the cases and lift the iPads out, so that's not a reasonable option.
    Any thoughts?

    Look for a new case.
There is varying opinions where it is best to power down electronics overnight or leave them on all the time to lengthen the life of a device.
I power down to save electricity at night.
