Well, print is almost dead, just at the time that InDesign is getting really good.
I hope the next generation of InDesign will allow great support for the ePub format. I wish it supported everything Apple will support on their iPad. Now, Apple is supporting embedded video and audio, I hear.
Taken a bit further, it looks like many graphic novels and some magazines are coming out in app form because they can do more than the ePub format allows. Could InDesign add some of these featured and export to an iPad app, as well? You have already started to add animation.
I am hopeful, because this could give new life to us old graphic designers. New hope!
(Yes, I would forget Flash and concentrate on ePub, PDF (if Apple allows PDF books to be sold on their store) and book-like app exports.)

I want my Mac program to be better than the Windows counterpart. Why? Well, that's why I bought a Mac. It was supposed to be better. At least at graphics. At least at design.
I'm not going to pick a fight with you either (I'll agree to cheerfully disagree ) but that is now not the case, and is arguably the opposite. Just look at the lack of PDF printer functionality on a new Mac now.
The only way for Apple to make sure that a Mac is better at design is to produce their own page layout program. Otherwise they'll have to accept that Adobe will need to sell their products to non Mac users as well and accept that they're reliant on other companies too, which requires cooperation. How good would a Mac be if there was no software available for it apart from what Apple sold?
Anyway, there is one thing for sure, as long as there are Macs and PCs there will be disagreement about which is better.

Turning Indesign into responsive HTML web pages

Hi All
I am having an issue in that I am trying to turn my indesign layout into a layered responsive HTML web page , currently I am turning then into PDF's and looking for people to convert the PDF's into responsive HTML's for web and smart devices. It seems a time consuming and un necessary process, and would like to avoid it if possible.

Uh no. InDesign does not create "proper HTML web pages", it's a document layout program that *also* can export text to HTML, to be further processed with a real HTML editor.
Dreamweaver is a real HTML editor.
Using InDesign to create web pages with is something like using MS Paint to write a novel.

What's the proper workflow to combine multiple video types and turn them into one high quality DVD?

I'm trying to combine 1080i (29.97fps), 1080p (29.97fps), and 720p (24fps) video files into a single Premiere Pro project, and end up with a high quality DVD.
There are a few problems I can't solve:
1. There seems to be interlacing and clarity issues any time I export it to DVD dimensions (720x480), and on some TVs I'll get a bouncing motion on the 720p footage (slideshow). Yet everything seems to look perfect when I export it something like an HD MOV file.
2. If I use Final Cut X to make the DVD, I'll get audio popping and decent image quality. Yet if I use Encore, I'll get horrible interlacing, but good audio.
I don't have any training in video workflow let alone how to properly diagnose and solve problems that arise. So I need someone to lay out the proper workflow and settings from start to finish to get these three different types of footage to look great on a DVD using Premiere/Encore.
I've attached sample images showing the types of footage I'm using and the kind of problems I'm running into for reference.

By far the best way to get the quality of encoding is to use Compressor and not DVDSP. You can set Compressor up to do the AC3 (which DVDSP can't do). Alternatively, use a better encoder than Compressor, such as BitVice or MegaPEG.X... but remember that these do not do AC3 encoding.
Keep the encoded assets all in a single folder on your mac, then drag that folder into the DVDSP 'Assets' tab. This will import them all and keep them in the folder, which is a neater way of doing things. Select all of the clips within the folder (or simply select the folder itself) and drag them on to the track - they will go on in alphabetic or numeric order (whichever you have used as your names). If using numbers, remember to use '01', '02', etc otherwise clip ten, eleven, twelve and so on will follow clip one... clip two will come after clip 19.
Drop them all on a single track. You can then point a menu button at the track and all of the clips will play one after the other. If you want black in between then you will be better adding this in a NLE such as Final Cut, then exporting the entire sequence of clips as a single file. Alternatively, create a black .pict file the correct dimensions for the video format you are using and manually add it in between each clip on the timeline. Or, create a series of black .pict files and name them 011, 021, 031 and so on. Place them in your folder of clips with the MPEGs named 01, 02 and so on. When you select all and drop it onto your timeline within DVDSP a black clip will go in between each piece of footage (sequence will be 01, 011, 02, 021, 03, 031 ). This is probably the quickest way to do it. You can reuse the same black .pict files for every project like this and as long as you follow the same naming convention it will always work.
Like anything you want to automate, the first couple of times take longer to set up. After that it is a lot easier.

Suggestion for turning this into one case structure

This is a snippet from some exisiting code we were hired to modify/clean up. I have to assume there is some way I can reduce this to only have one case structure, maybe with a not-and or not-or. Or maybe I'm overthinking this. Basically I keep confusing myself in relatively simple code when thinking about the booleans being compared. Any help is appreciated.

Best way to turn a looped region into one regular region.

Hello,
This is going to be a very easy question for someone to answer.
When I record a small part (say just a 2 bar lick) I then pull the end corner to loop it.
FANTASTIC.
But I would rather view it on the main window as one solid region, rather than seeing the little ''bite marks'' that make it look like an accordion, or a bunch of regions pushed together. To me, that looks messy.
I have yet to find a way to quickly turn it into one region. Would the best way really be to bounce in place, because merging or joining does not seem to work for loops.
Again, I'm sure it is something I'm missing here that it quite simple.
I'm still trying to get my logic legs and put my PT ones on hold for the time being.

How do I combine several short movies into one large project?

You’ll often find a longer project much easier to work with if you work on it in shorter pieces. Doing this can minimize system lugging and maximize program responsiveness as well as reduce the likelihood that you’ll run into problems when you try to output your finished movie.
Once each segment is finished and output, open a new project and combine the segments into a final mix.
In order to do with this minimal loss of quality and maximum performance, you’ll want to output each segment in its ideal video format – a format that the program is designed to work with natively and won’t have to re-render. Instructions for outputting each of these ideal video formats are found below.
The ideal source video format for a standard definition video project is the DV-AVI, although DV-MOVs will also work.
The ideal source video format for a high definition video project is either the 1920x1080 HDV MPEG or the 1920x1080 MTS AVCHD file.
For standard video
If you’d like to export your video project – or even a portion of your project – so that you can import it into a standard definition Premiere Elements video project on a Windows computer, use Publish & Share/Computer/AVI with the DV preset option. The file you output will have an .avi suffix
The Macintosh equivalent to the DV-AVI file is the DV-MOV. To output a DV-MOV file from your project, use Publish & Share/Computer/MOV with the DV preset. The file you output will have a .mov suffix.
For high-definition video
If you’d like to export your video project – or a portion of your project – from an HDV (tape-based high-definition) project for use in another HDV project, use Publish & Share/Computer/MPEG with the MPEG2 1920x1080i 30 preset (or 1920x1080i 25 for PAL).
If you’re working on an Full AVCHD project, output your video by clicking Publish & Share/Computer/AVCHD and using the M2T 1920x1080i preset (with the appropriate frame rate). For more information on outputting AVCHD video.
Both forms of high-definition video will output with the .m2t suffix.

Apps are locked to the Apple ID that was used to download them. You will have to sign in as your brother in order to update it.

How do I import multiple Ai files into one Indesign File - whilst still keeping the Ai Files editable and up dateable for the one Indesign File?

Hi All,
Im relatively new to Ai and Indesign, and have been doing Uni work over Christmas, and have a rather urgent question thats stressing me out.
I originally had many art boards in my ai file, but due to the number, I split these into single files to help my computer run better.
Now I want to organise them into one document to save. From searching online Indesign can import these and save as one file, yet automatically update if the original ai file is updated. I would like to do this but just don't know how to do this correctly?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, effectively I would like to catalogue the files into one collection so i can save as one PDF and Print as one.:)
I know I could save each AI as a pdf them then merge the pdf's together in acrobat, but I have nearly 100 files so would feel more comfortable seeing them all together before print / saving.
My concern is that if I insert them in Ai, will the file resolution reduce? and will the ai still be editable and would it update the indesign file?

First check to see if it's on the multitasking list and if so, force close it: double-tap the home button, locate the app in question, swipe up on the image above the app icon then tap the home button again.

How to import multiple XML files into one inDesign document without copy/paste ?

I use InDesign CS6, and I have several XML files with the same structure. Only the data are different.
I created an Indesign layout with some tagged placeholder frames on merge mode, for automated layout.
Today for each XML file I have to create a new InDesign document to import the XML. Everything works fine. Then in order to have all Indesign layouts one after the other into a single Indesign layout, I have to use the copy/paste function.
I mean for example, copy the contents of all documents to the first one. Or add pages of other documents to the first one, then delete spaces between each page.
So my question is the following:
How to repeat this process without copy/paste function, knowing that the
number of XML files could be unknown.

Joining multiple inDesign files into one, can you solve this?

OK so basically I work at a magazine, the creative's all work on separate spreads so all the inDesign files consist of between 1 and 10 pages then usually they are all spat out in there sets of PDF's and sent to the printers.
Now I want to do an online addition of the magazine with the new SWF export feature in inDesign CS4 but I'm wondering how can you easily compile all of the separate inDesign files into one so that it can spit out one single swf with all 200 pages with the page peel effect?
Is there even a way without a mass of work of manually adding all the pages into one file, that would be absolutely humongous? Anyone with any suggestions how to make this process the simplist and with the least amount of labout would be an absoulute legend, I have little time to spend on this which sucks so looking for the best and fastest possible way that we could do it each month.

I migth have a kind of solution for you. I have made a solution named eDocBrowser. (I called it Magazine Browser in earlier threads here and couple of other forums). It´s a collection of files that you publish with you SWF-files you have exported from InDesign. With eDocBrowser, you can put several SWF-files together and end-user can use them almost as one single SWF. Heres little demo I made just few minutes ago.

There are 3 SWF-files, all of them exported from InDesign. They are originally separate indd-files. When you reach last page of Document1, small arrow appears, and text "Jump to next file" and name of the next file too. You can go there also by using next-button at the bottom right corner, one that you use normaly to go next page. Same kind of arrow appears also when you are in first page of document 2 or 3 etc... with it you can go back to earlier documents last page etc... All the documents can be seen also in a drop-down menu at top of the screen. Labels of that menu are customizable.
Theres also a zoom. When you clic zoom+ button, your cursor changes to magnifying glass. With zoom- you can go back to normal view.
Additional features are FullScreen-view, Printing current spread and customizing user interface, buttons and logo at the top-left corner. Text search is very exprerimental and requires indd-file indexing with script we have made too. It indexes every single word in indd-document to XML-file and put pagenumbers there too. eDocBrowser searches that XML-file and gives all the hits to small result window. Hits are also links to page where they point...Search is not in use with this demo..
There is a small help-section in top-right corner...
We also have a script called eDocMaker. It does everything for you. You just have to have indd-files in one folder. Script asks location of that folder when you run it. It also askes you which resolution you want to use with images, anything goes between 72-2400 (72ppi is indesign´s default resolution for SWF-export, using bigger resolution might cause bigger SWF-files, but images look better when zoomed)
Price of the single licence of eDocBrowser will be 80euros (aprx. 100dollars). With it you may install one copy of eDocBrowser into your server and use as many SWF-files there as you want. There is no search feature in single version.
Price of unlimited licence is 300euros (aprx.400dollars) With it you may install as many copies of eDocBrowser as you like. With it you also get all the indesign scripts including eDocMaker with resolution booster, search indexer etc. + goodies like user interface and button templates, indesign effect (3D spine graphic etc)....
Product is about ready, we are just setting up a place to sell it. Now it seems that we are going to use a service called payloadz.com....
