Turn off backups while restoring!

I had a 500 GB disk that just went bad, but since all the data was backed up on another drive by Time Machine, I decided to restore to a new drive. This probably would have worked just fine, but I neglected to turn off backups, and this created a problem.
I was restoring about 335 GB of data onto the new drive (which I had given the same name as the old drive) and Time Machine seemed to be working just fine, giving an estimate of about 5 hours for the copy to complete.
However, when I checked the system this morning, the copy had aborted, with the reason being that the files no longer existed on the TM drive.
What I think happened was this. TM kept on backing up files from the new drive, which resulted in its running out of space on the TM drive. So it automatically deleted old backups, including the one that I was restoring from.
I wish that TM had been smart enough to avoid this problem, although I can see how I could have avoided it myself by turning off the backup function while doing the restore, or by having it warn me before deleting backups. Lesson learned.
Happily, the files all seem to be intact and I'm restoring them now from the only backup that still exists, the one that TM made yesterday!

Sorry, not realy that familiar with Windows :-(
I am starting to get a bit confused myself.
Could you be a bit more specific, what option you choose "Automatic Backup" during installation. What backup are you refering to?
Did you make a screenshot of the installation proces, so that you can include this?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem. You likely have a bad battery.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one with a new battery for $79. They do not fix yours.

  • Why my ipad turn off suddenly while working..??

why my ipad turn off suddenly while working..??

I have been having the same problem for about a month.  It has now gotten so bad I can no longer use my iPad 3.
Having problems with my iPad 3 shutting down, starting up, shutting down continuously.
I have tried closing all apps in Task Bar & the sleep/home routine.  They worked for awhile, but now nothing is working!
I was told that this is a common problem with the iPad 3 and that it is a manufacturers defect.
It is 14 months old and Apple wants over $300 for send-in service.  I have tried to reset to factory defaults, but  ipad keeps shutting down & restoration never finishes.  I am not sure whether to have it repaired or cut my losses and move on to something else.  Frustrating & expensive.  Any suggestions???

    Hello candymerna,
At this point I would recommeng resetting the device if if will not turn on.
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

Battery does not charge from the USB power adapter
Important: Only original iPhone can be charged from a FireWire-based power source. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the battery may drain.
Verify that the outlet being used is working.
Try another USB power adapter if available.
If no other USB power adapter is available, try connecting to a high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode.
Try another USB cable if available.

  • Can't turn off Backup on Palm Pre !

I really don't want this Backup function on my phone ! When I disable it, I just get a spinning circle ... that's it ... nothing is happening !
    any tips ?

    Hello and welcome to the forums;
Have you tried restarting your device after turning off backup? How about closing the Backup card and re-opening to see if it did turn off? In some lower coverage areas, the change won't reflect until after a card cycle.
Upon looking at your device information, it looks like your backup is currently disabled.
    Hope this helps,

  • MBP turning off randomly while on battery

So my MBP keeps turning off randomly while I'm using battery, first few times it happened I thought it had just got to hot and turned off because of that. But after it happend a few times i noticed that its not even hot to the touch. Its happening what ever i am doing even when I have very low cpu usage like listening to i tunes, or just watching a movie.
Any ideas what it could be?
Thanks for any help you guys can give.

I have the same problem. It is most likely the battery has become faulty or possibly damaged. Best to replace the battery or if you can call one of the genius' at the mac store.

  • Can I turn off Macbook while Time Capsule is archiving Time Machine backup to a USB drive?

My Time Capsule is archiving my Time Machine backup to a USB drive attached to it. I have initiated this process on my macbook (on the same lan with the Time Capsule), on which I am monitoring the archiving progress on the Airport Utility. Still almost a couple of days to go... Can I turn off my Macbook, or will that interrupt the process of archiving?

If LaPastenague is willing to do a "test", then we will all know more.
    Opened my big mouth.
The archive is happening.. I turned off the computer it was setup from.. running Mavericks and latest utility once I got it started. I have been checking from v6 utility on Mountain Lion.. and it is excruciatingly slow. But is running.
I can check the progress but v6 utility is utterly and completely useless.. it continually shows the same numbers.
v5 utility does show it is crawling along.
    v6
    20min later..
Look, look, there is a tiny blue fleck in the progress bar!!
v5 utility shows the actual progress. Actually tells you total and amount backed up so far.
Amazing how advanced v5 utility is over v6.
The estimate of 10hours is probably correct at the present rate of progress. I suppose for 500GB, around 50GB/hr is about what we expect from TM backups etc.
I will post another picture in an hour and probably kill it then before I die of watching paint dry.

  • Turning off Backup drive--Time Machine

What happens if i turn off my backup drive (it is a bit noisy) without touching Time Machine?  Will, eg, all new files created while it was off be added to the backup when I turn the drive back on?
    Thanks

All that will happen is you will get a dialogue box that comes up saying TM couldn't find the drive. If your EHD is noisy and that bothers you get a better drive. The ones I tend to recommend I'll list below. Once the drive is reconnected it will backup the new and/or changed files since the last backup.
    OWC Mercury Elite Pro series
    LaCie d2 Quadra series
    G-Tech G-DRIVE series
All are similar in build quality and feature sets. Personally I have 4 of the LaCie's and have been using them for 4 years, all have performed without any issues. However I'd be happy to also have the OWC or G-Tech's on my desk too.
