Turn off deep sleep / hibernation

Hi all,
I do not want to let my MBP go to deep sleep mode every time I close its lid or send it to sleep by one of the other ways. Before the MBP I had a PowerBook G4 which went to "normal" sleep mode in 2-3 seconds. The MBP takes 20-30(!) seconds and I really don't need deep sleep.
Is there any way to turn this feature off in order to get a faster sleep mode like my PBG4 had?
Thanks everyone
Björn

Your MBP is not going into deep sleep. Normal sleep operation on the Intel laptops when you close the lid is:
1. Write current state to the hibernation disk file.
2. Enter "normal" sleep. Computer is not shut off and memory state is maintained (this is Safe Sleep.) Wake-up will be very quick.
In Deep Sleep the following occurs:
1. Current state is written to the hibernation disk file.
2. Computer shuts off. Memory state is not preserved. Upon wake-up there will be a delay during which the operating system loads the saved state from the hibernation disk file. Usually a progress bar appears on the screen as the saved state is loaded into RAM.
From what you describe your computer is set for normal sleep, not Deep sleep.

  • How do i awaken from a deep sleep/hibernation

I have many eMacs in a library I run at my school. On occassion they go into a deep sleep/hibernation that the only way I can awaken them is to pull the plug and then put plug back in and restart. They do not even respond to on/off button being depressed for 30 seconds. There must be a command or better way then unplugging. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the help. Of course I have tried to depress keys and combination of keys to wake but to no avail. The power light on the eMac "throbs" bright/low and no response when in the hibernation mode. At one station 6 eMacs are connected to a hub and the hub goes to an ethernet hook up to a T1 line through our school server. We have many of these types of arrangements throughout the school. Not all of the eMacs do this hibernation however, and is very puzzling has to when and why ones goes into the "deep sleep." I guess i am concerned with screen burn in and when the Mac is in a multiple user log in screen, the screen saver will not activate. Thanks and if you can think of anything else i would appreciate all suggestions.

Apple released an update a while back to control the brightness of the sleep indicator, but it was only for certain G5 models. Quick perusal of apple support didn't turn up anything. Coworker swears that the brightness is controlled by the ambient light sensor, but I certainly can't tell the difference in a bright vs dark room...

    No warranty left -_-

Whoever told you that is wrong. The warranty on a repair or replacement iPhone is still 90 days minimum. Quoting from their Service FAQ:
If defects arise as a result of service, Apple will cover the repair for the remaining term of the iPhone's warranty or 90 days after iPhone service, whichever provides longer coverage for you.
Call Apple Support and discuss your problem with them. If they agree that it's a hardware problem, they can arrange for mail-in service.

  • Turn Off Safe Sleep?

Does anybody know of a utility that can turn off Safe Sleep for a Mac Pro running Leopard?
I have used Leopard Cache Cleaner to do it successfully for my MacBook, but it doesn't seem to keep Safe Sleep turned off for a Mac Pro.
    - Ted.

I am not a mind reader so bear with me. In order to answer that, I'd have to know how many and large the swap files are now, what apps you use, and open concurrently, plus how hard and large files you work on etc.
    I'd remove the 2 x 512s or whatever and add 4 x 1GB or 4 x 2GB.

It's all in the details. Notice where this thread started, with "safe sleep" and the crux of the issues are low memory AND low disk space.

I will say that 5-6GB is probably fine for light work in Photoshop. And working on larger files you are headed for more than 8GB (10-16).

  • Monitor turns off to sleep but computer stays on???

Monitor turns off to sleep but computer stays on???
Any clues why? I can only shut-down and it gets annoying because I like to be working in less than a minute after powering up. Any things to look for to help?

    Thanks,
don't know why it'd matter if I had a warranty or not since the function
in question is apart of what I'm supposed to be getting w/ cost of computer.
Time to load the overpriced 1 ton computer into the car and demand they fix it at the apple store. This is absurd since I originally bought this computer for music creating and it's the most unreliable computer EVER as far as stability for music. My audiophile records for like 10 sec. before the sound cuts out, everytime, but of course that's not apple's fault.
Never buying apple again. This is straw that broke the camels back. Anyone wanna trade a pc for my G5?
Sorry for the venting but this is where I draw the line!

  • IMac turns off while sleeping

My iMac sometimes turns off during sleep mode, I did call apple care and went through utilities and the tech support said that issue should be resolved, but it happen again today. Has anyone else had the same issues? Is this also the start of some bigger issues down the line?
    Thanks,

    HI BC,
Check System Preferences/Energy Saver. Click the Schedule button bottom right in that pane and make sure it's not set to turn off at a certain time.
According to this article, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 Make sure your software is up to date.

Ipod nano 6th gen music turns off in sleep mode or when you turn it off. It always continued to play until I paused it before.

By the way all you guys freaking out about this, go to home screen. click settings. go to music. go to the sleep/wake button section. change double clikc for: to Play/Pause. Now when you wanna listen to songs, click power button 1nce to put in sleep mode, then double-click power button really fast once in sleep mode to unpause your song and resume listening. lol, i figured this out 2 days after 1.1 update..

  • Turning off vs Sleeping...QUESTIONS!!

Ok, first off, I had an imac which I bought in 08, worked fine for a bit, and then went totally weird on me, turned off by itself, turned on by itself, long story short, I ended up at the Genius bar 3 times, had it fixed twice (for free, still under warranty), and finally replaced with a new one, again, for free, thanks Apple
So, what I'm trying to say is, I really don't want any of that happening to my new imac, even though the helpful Apple employees said it was nothing I did.....
I get on my Imac every night, not on much during the day, should I be putting my imac to sleep when I get off, or should I shut it down? I hope I make sense, I mean, should I only shut it down if I know I won't be on for a couple of days?
ANY info on sleeping/shutting down would be GrEaT! Thanks everyone!!!!

Here is a good article that I picked up from a website that is no longer in existence (or I would just direct you there).
SHOULD I SLEEP OR SHUT DOWN MY MAC?:
This topic is oft debated in many Mac forums, and does not really have a concrete answer; a lot depends on what you do with your Mac, and what Mac you use. Before deciding whether to shut down or sleep your Mac, you should know (a) what happens in each process, and (b) the pros and cons to both practices.
    Sleeping
Many computer users (myself included) almost NEVER shut down their computers. There are many positive benefits to this (especially if you're a Mac user). When a Mac goes to sleep, almost every component inside the computer is turned off; what is not turned off is set in a 'low-power mode'. The contents of the RAM and Video RAM are saved, the network ports might still get a little power, and a few other subsystems stay on, but pretty much everything else is off.
PC laptops are a little different - because MS can't get its act together, PCs 'hibernate' - like a really deep sleep. The hard drive is accessed a lot during the 'hibernate' and 'unhibernate' times, causing a lot of wear and tear and much energy usage. This also takes a lot longer than the Mac way. I don't like PCs much (can you tell?).
On a laptop, this mode uses VERY little battery power - if you're going to use your laptop again within a day or so without the power adaptor plugged in, this could actually save battery power, as shutting down/starting up uses a lot more energy (much more disk access, processor power, etc.). On a desktop, this could save a little energy (thus a few $$$), especially if you put it to sleep a few times a day when you know you won't be using it.
The best advantage to sleeping is that the computer (a) goes to sleep almost immediately, allowing quick transport of a laptop, and no vigilance after clicking 'Shut Down...' on a desktop, and (b) wakes up almost immediately, allowing you to get to work right away.
    Shutting Down
Shutting down a computer has a few benefits as well. One is that NO power is being used at all - for laptops, it's best to shut it down if you're not going to use it for a day or two, as it will save a little bit of energy and heat from being wasted in your laptop. On a desktop, you might wish to shut down so that you can transport it, or if you won't use it for a long while.
Also, shutting down completely wipes away the computer's RAM (random access memory), which might have some corrupt/junk data left in it from various things the computer does. It also lets the computer's components cool down. I definitely recommend shutting down at least once a month or so.
However, when you shut down and start up your computer, the hard drive and other components get more wear and tear, and use more energy.
    The Verdict
I recommend all Mac users to sleep their computers unless they won't be used for more than a day or two, and all Mac users should shut down their computers at least once a month to clean out all the gibbledygook that collects inside the components.

  • Power supply vs. logic board?  turns off in sleep mode.

My imac g5 (2004 - 1st generation?) is either turning completely off or going into some un-wake-up-able mode after it's put to sleep. (I have to switch off/on the power strip and turn the computer on all over again.) And sometimes if it's sleeping (power light pulsing on front) it may or may not wake from sleep by pushing the power button. Often touching a key in that circumstance will cause it to crash, so I've quit using that altogether as a method of waking it up. I've reset the SMU a number of times throughout the past few months and it has not cleared up this problem.
Last night after I put it to sleep it switched in to the un-wake-up-able mode. I could still hear something running (not a fan, just an electrical hum) where it seems like it's crashed and can't shut itself off. I had to turn off the power and try to turn the computer back on. It wouldn't respond the first couple times. Then the power light glowed for a while but it still didn't turn on completely. After a few more minutes I tried again. Maybe I held the power button for too long, but I heard a long single beep, the fans whirred, and then everything started up as usual.
I've read a number of threads seemingly related to these issues, but am now not clear about whether this is a power supply issue or a logic board issue. I have yet to open the back and check for bulging capacitors. Just thought I'd ask here first.

I am having a very close issue too (posted also in a more recent thread about power button not functioning). My old iMac G5 20 inches got a power supply that went bad two years ago. I had it replaced and all went fine until two weeks ago.
My wife was using it, while I was away: machine shut down with a 'pop!' sound.
She tried to start it up again, but after pressing the button a couple of times - the last one longer - she had a long strong peep. The machine went on for a while and then off again. Scared, she left it off.
After checking, no reported issue seems to fit to the problems shown: power supply is working; logic board too. The machine is working fine, but on sleep, it dies out. While doing tasks, at undetermined times, it shuts down with a 'pop!'. Sometimes you can restart it immediately. Sometimes you can't and have to wait one or more hours. No evidently bad caps on board, led check returns 1 (no 2 flashing or attempting to turn on) with dead computer, otherwise all working fine. Hardware test also passed. Console messages have nothing relevant or clearly understandable to offer.
Still can't figure out a solution. Many user are pretty fast in suggesting to bringing the machine to Apple. Unfortunately not all around the world we have/need cars. And getting the 20 kg of iMac by feet/metro to the shop it ain't such a nice walk. When I fried the power supply, there was no sufficiently large box on sale to pack the computer and have it send to the shop. I had to wait for the technician - on a convenient day - do drop by and take it (and he knew he was going to repair it)!
Will post, if I have further developments.

  • Airport Turns Off After Sleep

After I sleep my Mac, sometimes Airport is turned off and I can't get on the Web. If I go to network preferences and view the airport connection, I can't turn airport on again. If I lock the connection to prevent further changes, once Airport turns itself off the lock is unlocked. Rebooting will turn Airport on and reestablish the connection. How can I prevent/circumvent this problem without having to reboot?
Someone suggested that another network might be interfering and I should change the channel, but I don't know how to do this... Explanation or other ideas?

I wish I could help, but I have the same problem. When my G5 Tower goes to sleep, I lose Airport connection. When it wakes, Airport is on but will not reconnect. Attempts to connect result in errors (trying again doesn't help). It's not the Airport Extreme, since that works fine with other computers. It's not this specific network (I have two parallel accounts on the Airport Extreme - one public, one private) and it won't connect at all. The only thing that works is a complete reboot. I've tried deleting preferences, resetting the network connection (ie wiping it out, re-establishing the network with password etc) and nothing happens. Is the card dying?

  • Qosmio X500-11G - Incrorrect turning off from sleeping mode

    Hello everebody,
When I leave my X500-11G (Windows 7 64bit) in turning on condition and no one process is working computer is turning off incorectly in stead of go to sleeping mode. After that X500 don't responce for keyboard and mouse and I have to push power button for continue. X500 is turning on but BIOS informs about incorrect turning off Windows and propose different ways of restart Windows: normal start or safety modes.
Is this problerm famous and how to fix it?
    Thank you,
    iPal

    Hi buddy,
To be honest I also dont know why it happens but theoretically this problem could be caused by software... Are you using preinstalled Windows version or have you installed your own Windows version?
Furthermore I would recommend loading the default settings in BIOS. Therefore press F9 key in BIOS setup.
Have also a look in Windows Event Viewer. Usually you can find a log file about all errors and maybe you can find an interesting information about this problem.

  • 11inch air turns off when sleep due to unknown problem/takes awhile to fire up

    Hello,
Since the update to Mavericks i've noticed everytime i put my macbook air to sleep for longer than a few minutes.. it's shut itself off and when it fire up (after holding the power button for quite a few seconds) it comes up saying it turned off due to an unknown problem.
This never used to happen, I bought the Macbook Air 11 inch in September so its still fairly new. Is there anything im missing here - everythings up to date. I dont know if i should take it to genius bar yet or if theres something i could try to fix it.

You are not alone.  This is a very active topic.  See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5495588?start=0&tstart=0
The remedy mentioned several times in that thread is to reset SMC + PRAM and in check "Put hard disks to sleep when possible”.  It is not a perfect solution.  The problem reoccurs for some people.
    SMC reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    PRAM reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
     > System Preferences > Energy Saver
    > Battery > uncheck “Put hard disks to sleep when possible”.
    > Power Adapter > uncheck “Put hard disks to sleep when possible”.
If that does not do the job, go to an Apple store for a repair or replacement.
Actually, given this is an intermittent problem for others, you may want to take it to an Apple store before you try to make it better to have it fail in their presence.  After that try the fixes and if the problem comes back you will have a documented case for Apple to repair or replace the unit.

  • MacBook Pro (June 2010) freezing with screen turned off (not sleep)

    Hi.
This issue has happened to me two times now. I recently bought a Macbook Pro 13 inch and the problem has happened when I let the computer sitting there without moving anything with its lid opened, after like 20 minutes when i'm going to use it again it has the screen turned off, the fan on and the indicator light half way on constantly but anything would respond, to use it again I have to hold down the power botton until it turns off.
It was not sleeping because I have the sleep timer set to never, what I do have on is the sleep display timer to 15 minutes.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Please help!
