Turn off remote access to g1100?

Question

I have recently signed up for fios and have been supplied with a verizon g1100 wireless router.  Both the fios service and the router are working without problems.  However, I see that the router reports its internal settings, including my wireless password, to verizon, because I can view them when I sign in to my verizon account.  Also, the user guide for the router says (p.14, line 6) "Firmware updates are performed automatically by verizon".  I can understand the convenience of these arrangements for verizon and some users, but I also see them as a potential security risk.   Is there a way that I can forgo the convenience and turn off external access to the g1100?   I know that I can replace the verizon router with one of my own, but it seems otherwise satisfactory, so I would like to keep using it if I can do so more securely.

The level of control you gain over your network is excellent when using your own router.I agree with you. How can the OP bridge that vdsl modem OR use their own vdsl modem?I see no mention of bridging a vdsl modem or using his own. What's being stated is for the op to use his own router instead of the g1100 that is behind the verizon vdsl modem.  I guess the op would like to use the g1100 as it's a better modem but can't disable 4321.  Of course he could just cascade  his own router off the g1100 and have his on-premise network off his personal router where 4321 is blocked, leaving the g1100 in place for less sensitive access.Could also do the reverse.  Connect your own router to the vdsl modem blocking 4321 and then cascade the g1100 off off of it.
