Turn off "Reopen windows when logging back in"

Here's the problem:
When shutting off...
Check mark on:  it opens all my apps (Open Active window) that I currently have as auto startup each time I bootup. Like itunes and skype
Check mark off: It opens all my apps, but allows them to be hiding, (in the background).
How could I always have the Check Mark Off ?  This is really bothersome.

No way?
Try this.
Step 1: Go to ‘System Preferences’.
Step 2: Find the ‘General’ menu' and open it.
Step 3: Go to the bottom under “Number of recent items”
Step 4: Unclick the box “Restore windows when quiting and re-opening apps”.

  • How do I disable "reopen windows when logging back in"

Everytime I shutdown the mac asks me "reopen windows when logging back in". In fact the default is to do reopen all open programs when I restart. he annoying thing with apple is that when you close a window like Safari and iPhoto the program itself is not closed unless you spend extra time to go and QUIT each program. So naturally at least Mail and Safari are up when I'm ready to shutdown. On a other days MS Word, Excel and iPhoto are open as well. This is annoying to have to remember to QUIT everything when I'm sleepy before shutting down. Mac is supposed to be convenient not tedious. Please stop asking me if I want to reopen on logging back in. And worse yest stop assuming that this is the default action. Someone please help!

You can uncheck the option box on the shut down screen. Or you can use a terminal command to disable it completely. Or you can get in the habit of using Command+Q (No Caps on the Q, Command+q) to shut down programs that you no longer need running. And if you get in that habit of using Command+q you don't need to close the window or windows that are open for that program. Command+q will close the program and the active window/s.
    EDIT:
Here is a site that give you the command to disable this annoying ?FEATURE?.

  • How do I enable "reopen windows when logging back in" in OS 10.8.5?

I am one of the few people who actually liked that when I shut down at the end of the day I could go back to the same state when I logged back in.
Is there an option to restore the "reopen windows when logging back in" in OS 10.8.5?

The exact item you asked for,  [√] Re-Open windows When logging back in ...
... is on the Logout screen. Logout and make sure that box is checked, then log back in again.
    A related item is in
    System preferences > General ...
[√] Close windows when quitting an Application
--When selected, open documents and windows will not be restored when you re-open an Application

What gives? I uncheck "Reopen windows when logging out" and it still goes back to the prev. sessions windows.  Is there a fix for this?

I unchecked " Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps."  in the prefs. and still it goes back to the prev windows sessions when  I uncheck "Reopen windows when logging out"

  • How do I permanently delete the "Re Open  Windows when logging back in" choice? I want it to open to my home page, not where I shut the mac off.

How do I "Permanently" uncheck the box "Re open windows when logging back in"?

At this time there is no reliable way to permanently unselect that option. A quick way to unselect it just before logging out is to tap the space bar.

  • MacBook Pro Turns off Randomly Only when logged in OSX 10.8.2

    Hi,
I have a 2010 Macbook pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2. For a couple of weeks now, when its not plugged in to AC it turns off randomly, not at any specific battery%.
Things I have tried already that were not helpful:
    - System profiler battery: 374 cycles, Battery Status: Normal
    - SMC reset
    - Clean install of Mountain Lion without any Migraion of old System files (wanted to do this anyways before the problem arose)
    - Its does not seem to be a heating issue, has happened at low temperatures
What I have noticed is that if I either run the diagnostics at startup or enter to recovery mode, I can run the battery all the way to 0% (lasts a while) and this random swtiching off doesn't occur. It only happens when I am logged in to OSX. This makes me think its not a battery issue either.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Turn off reopen windows

How can I PERMANENTLY, and *SIMPLY* _stop_ Mac OS X 10.7.x from asking me every **** time I shut down/restart, whether I want to reopen the same windows when the OS X reboots ???
I don't _EVER_  want the same windows to reopen again.  I don't want to be asked EACH & EVERY time !
WHY doesn't the dang control panel setting (General control panel, in Settings) work to do this ???
AND - who is the Rocket Scientist who thought this up?  S/HE is definitely not a Steve Jobs A-Lister ...
    <Edited by Host>

Seriously, did you just (well, back in april) equate the a computing preference option, selectable by a user that they would like to automate or set their own default and can't as there is no selectable over-riding option to taking personal responsibility for their own actions like leaving the shower on, or car running...
You have got to be kidding... they merely want to set the default of the box to be unchecked.  That is taking personal responsibility and streamlining/customizing to be as efficient for the individual.
Its the individuals responsibility to adapt a system to their environment, not to adapt the environment or the individual to one piece (like the OS).  It is, however, in the best interest of the OS/App developer, to give as much control to the user as is programmatically feasible to adapt their product as the user sees fit.
This type of setting is silly and basic in the grand scheme of things, but can have an extremely annoying and disruptive effect depending on the users habits.  There is no 'feasible' reason that Apple didn't include an option to override the default or at least put documentation out there so that someone could write the script to do this for the users (i.e. like IT administrators that have to listen to users complain about this feature endlessly).  The hacks that are out there are relatively easy, if obtuse and left wanting if it is the true subsystem method (I'm not a fan of replacing system loginhooks as updates, etc can overwrite these).
For those looking, see this for the hack, and look at Mountain Tweaks which I think has a method of doing it per application, if still a bit cryptic for the avg. user to identify the apps 'registered' name.
... but please, the user should adapt to the OS... ridiculous statement.

  • Turn off reopen windows from last session.

Ever since Apple came up with that horrible idea, I have had to deal with it. Every time I open Safari, Allllllllllllllllllll the previous tabs open. Sometimes dozens.
I never set it to do that, it just does it from a previous version of Safari and keeps doing it.
Once, there was a way to uncheck it, but that has been abandoned in recent versions, yet is reading a preference somewhere from the past.
Rendering Top Sites, that I love....completely useless.
I just want my Safari to open with Top Sites, and yes....it is set that way, just doesn't do it.
Thought I would ask about it today in hopes someone has experienced it and spent limited life time solving it.

I finally found the work around.
    Safari Preferences:
    The General tab:
    Set:
Safari opens with: A new window
    then Set:
New windows opens with: Top Sites
This setting now 'always' opens with my much loved Top Sites.
Thanks for working on this with me. Cheers

  • How do i turn off msft office at log on/start up?

Good afternoon.  New to the Mac world after 15 years of Windows machines and very happy with finally making the switch.
I have one small nit I can't seem to fix and was hoping someone could make a suggestion.
At start up, the MSFT Office suite gets launched.  I would like to disable that feature.
I have gone through all of the system preferences that I can find and have not been able to locate any command that will
    disable Office from launching.
Any suggestions or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Not sure what you mean, but try this - click on the Apple Logo - top left - then click on shut down - then take the checkmark off - reopen windows when logging back in.
If that doesn't work - check users and groups and see if it's in your login items - highlight and hit the minus sign to delete it from there.
    hope that helps.

My phone started acting up and I noticed my text messages were not being sent.  So I turned my iphone off.  My iphone 4s turned off properly but when I went to put it back the apple icon came on and then an image I have never seen before of a UBS pointiing towards the word itunes in a circle.  And the phone no longer goes beyond this message.  I try to turn it off and on again and same message over and over.  If I hit the any button on the phone nothing happens. Does anyone know what this means or seen this itunes messaging ?  meltdown? Please help.

    Hello Raja,
Thank you so much for your response.  I had these photos backed up on iCloud but, had I not, its good to have an alternate solution as the one you suggested.  Actually, I went to the Apple store today and yes, you are absolutely correct Restoring in iTunes will result in permanent loss of photos unless backed up somewhere such as iCloud or other solution.  Well, what they did was restore the phone in itunes ( I did not have iTunes downloaded to my computer which is why it did not work when I went to do it myself, I needed to go to the iTunes site and go to the download iTunes button because my windows based HP laptop does not come with itunes already downloaded).  This retoration process took a while and I was forced to upgrade to the latest 7.1 iOS software which I was not too happy about -sometimes you like the way things work now :-)  Anyhow, they said this restoration request happens as a result of a software update (which I was NOT in progress of an update or doing an update) or sometimes when you remove the power cable too quickly from the iphone (which I do not recall doing this either but...). Since I had backed up on iCloud all of the photos were downloaded back on my iphone 4s.  Best of all was that my phone was back up and runnning and there was NO CHARGE at the apple store for this service of restoring my phone.  Well, I just wanted to share the results and I appreciate all the responses and support I received.  Thank you kindly.

  • My iphone came up with that timing circle and just turned off and did not come back on ? even when i charge it now it still wont turn on ,do you know the problem?

my iphone came up with that timing circle and just turned off and did not come back on ? even when i charge it now it still wont turn on ,do you know the problem?

If the battery was empty (and it may then take 10 to 15 minutes of charging before it will respond), then have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the equivalent of a reboot.

  • How do you make it not so sensitivity. when turned off set down it comes back on or when working out shirt brushes ipod and it changes music

how do you make it not so sensitivity. when turned off set down it comes back on or when working out shirt brushes ipod and it changes music

You didn't say which model of iPod Nano that you have, but generally there should be a lock setting, that can be turned on or off, to prevent accidental changes in settings. And, there is also a setting to turn on or off a feature called, "Shake to Shuffle." It allows you to change songs by just shaking the iPod.

  • How do I stop OSX Lion from reopen windows after logging in?

Please advise.  This is aggrevating me.  Everytime I shut down my computer, I have to uncheck the box that states, Reopen windows after logging in.  I don't want to do this everytime I shut my computer down.  If I don't completely log out of every single application, when I start my computer and log-in, the programs I was using before I shut-down all come back up and sometimes this freezes my computer and I have to force shut down.  Any suggestions would be great.  Thank you.

It is one of the over 250 new features of the World's Most Advanced Operating System called Resume.
When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
If you want to turn it off on a per app basis, (TextEdit is by example, replace TextEdit with the name of the app)
Launch Terminal and copy/paste this at the prompt...
defaults write com.apple.TextEdit NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false
    Press return.
    To turn off Resume globally...
    chflags uchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
    Press return
The reverse of the first one is to replace false with true.
The reverse of the second one is
    chflags nouchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"

  • Should I turn off my computer when I go om vacation?

should I turn off my desktop when I go on vacation, in the event ther is a thunderstorm?

Yes, turn it off.  I also agree that computers should be turned off when you are "done" for the day.  I have aquantainces that do not ever turn them off.  Their computers never seem to last a long.  My last computer at the office lasted over six years and was fine until space on the HD and memory became an issue.  My last Home Computer was almost a teenager before it was replaced.  If fact I just recently gave away my old Packard-Bell computer (Windows 95) and it still worked!  I do still have my Heath-Zenith (Cost $ 3000.00 new! With Zenith-DOS.)  -Have a good vacation!
