Turn off search arrows in gutter?

Is there a way to turn off the little yellow arrows in the
gutter that show what line a search result is on? They obscure the
breakpoint indicator, so I can't tell if I set one or not.

Preferences/General/Editors/Text Editors/Annotations, in the page
choose Search Results, and deselect the Vertical ruler
checkbox.

Is there a way to "turn off" "search suggestions" in the search field. As I find it quite annoying when I type then move the mouse and something else gets selected other than what I typed.

Hi Bill
Easiest way to eliminate the Google "help" search prompts is to install 3rd party freeware Glims. Latest version build is available here.
Once installed you'll find Glims as a separate panel in your Safari Preferences. If it doesn't appear in the panel list, click on the right pointing arrows at the end of the Preference Panels.
Glims provides a number of very useful features for Safari. Specific to your needs, go to Glims' search suggestions sub-panel. There, you can deselect the "auto complete phrase in the search field". Additionally, Glims provides a very helpful search drop down panel for quick access to searches.
There's more to discover with Glims. Clicking on the various sub-panels will reveal other features, including specific search engine options.

Check for hardware issues
Related errors: 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 1000, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.
These errors mean that your device or computer may have a hardware issue that's preventing the update or restore from completing.
Check that your security software and settings aren't preventing your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
Confirm that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.

How do I turn off searching from the address bar. Setting keyword.enabled to false is not working.

I never want to search from the address bar. I've been able to turn off this horrible annoying feature in the past by setting "keyword.enabled" to false but this no longer seems to work. Is there any way to fix this so that searching from the address bar never happens with any search engine?

If you set keyword.enabled to false, then what Firefox normally does is check whether your address bar entry is a valid server name (first DNS lookup) and, if not, it will try fixup (e.g., www.+''what you typed''+.com) (second DNS lookup).
If you get search results, particularly if you get results from some site other than your preferred search engine, there are two possible explanations:
(1) DNS provider hijack.
There are some service providers that do not answer the DNS lookups honestly and instead will divert you to their own page of search results. In that situation, there sometimes is a link on the page to opt out, either right there, or behind an explanation (why do I get this page?) or a settings link. You may have to look around. Or if your service provider won't let you opt out, you might need to switch to using OpenDNS or Google Public DNS.
You probably should also check your connection setting it case that has been modified:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button
Try "No proxy" here to see whether that helps.
(2) Bad add-on.
Some extensions will divert honest DNS misses to their preferred search site. Here's what I suggest for cleaning out bad add-ons:
(A) Open the Windows '''Control Panel''', Add/Remove Programs. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
(B) Then, in Firefox, open the '''Add-ons page''' using either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
(C) Search for remaining issues with the '''scanning/cleaning tools''' listed in our support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]. Note that the tools are free and take considerable time to run. If they seem to finish quickly and then ask for payment, you might have a Fake AV infection. Please use the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.

How do you turn off search history completely forever (not clear)?

When I open up Safari and visit Google.com and start typing, previous searches appear in a list below the search box. The last item on the search box is a link that says, "Clear History". When I click that it says, "Click OK to clear the following searches from history:"

You can use private browsing in safari When the safari app is open at the bottom left corner tap on the two square icons and after to the left you should see private. Turn this on and no history is saved

I don't like to have my computing activities recorded.
How do I turn off the SEARCH FOR thingy permanently?
Even if I removed all the SEARCH FOR options and turned it back on, my activities are still recorded.

The items in Search for are just canned Saved Searches that Apple made for those who don't know how to make a Smart Folder. As was pointed out anyone could do the same thing in Tiger. If you don't want anyone to use them, you could try using Terminal to delete them (make a backup first, in case this hack causes problems). They are here:
"/System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/CannedSearches"
I modified the PastWeek one to show Photoshop files only, which seemed to work fine.

I'm unable to turn off Search Suggestions in Firefox 10.0.2.

I unchecked the "Show Search Suggestions" box in the "Manage Search Engines" pane. No change. Restarted Windows and the box was still unchecked, but the Google search suggestions still appear as I'm typing my search phrase. They also appear on sites like IMDB.
How can I turn the suggestions off?

Firefox has control over the (Google) search bar on the Navigation Toolbar.<br />
So it is possible to disable the search suggestions when you do a search via the search bar.<br />
On web pages there runs a script that monitors key presses and sends data to the server which responses by sending a (JSON) file that the script that has send the request interprets and shows as suggestions in a drop down list.<br />
In such a case only blocking that request or the involved script(s) can prevent that.
Maybe someone ar the NoScript forum has a suggestion how to deal with this.

Turning off search while typing in "find and replace" box

When I hit CMD+F to do a find and replace in my spreadsheet, Numbers begins to search from the first character I type. While this behavior is fine and in fact useful for small spreadsheets, on large spreadsheets it creates an annoying lag, and it ends up taking 10 or so seconds to type my full query (the only thing I'm really interested in) because Numbers is busy searching for all the intermediate ones. Is it possible to turn this feature off so that Numbers will only search after I've entered the full string I'm looking for? Thanks.

I take care to never type command + F.
When I want to apply some search, I trigger the Find button which give me the Find & Replace dialog which doesn't behave the way you described.

There is no way to turn off all suggestions when you type, unless you're using Private Browsing mode.
The "Search Engine Suggestions" only disables sending what you type to the selected search engine (Google, Bing, etc.). It does not prevent Safari from providing suggestions based on your browsing history and your bookmarks stored locally on disk.
To enable Private Browsing mode, tap the address view, then tap "Private" button on top of the keyboard. After enabling Private Browsing, no more suggestions will be listed from history or bookmarks, and if "Search Engine Suggestions" are off, then nothing should be listed.

How to turn off Find My Iphone when screen is black?

Hi all, I have an Iphone 4s and the screen has gone black. I have tried to restore thorugh itunes but i have to turn off Find my iphone through setting on my iphone before i can - but I can't. According to Apple support, you cannot remove the phone on the device list under "find my iphone" until you turn it off and it goes offline. (It also says the device will go back on "find my iphone" when it goes online again, which seems to mean you can successfully remove it, but as soon as you turn it back on it will be back on the list, and thus you will not be able to restore it.) It's a bit of a conundrum. In my case I couldn't for some reason turn off my phone with the home/sleep buttons - nothing happens, the phone stays on. While on a chat with Apple support, they got my iphone offline (I was able to turn it off by pressing the sleep button and swiping where the red "turn off iphone" arrow would have appeared) and removed it from "find my phone", but when I reconnected to itunes it turned on and reappeared in the "find my phone" list. Luckily, the screen suddenly appeared (it had done this several times yesterday, just briefly), so I was able to turn off "find my device" from the phone. I was then able to restore. Unfortunately, this does not answer the question of how to remove the device from "find my iphone" and keep it off while connecting with itunes to restore (unless you have my good fortune of having the screen suddently reappear). Apple support seemed puzzled that it had reappeared on the device list under "find my iphone". Time will tell whether the restoration fixes the blank screen issue.

Is it possible to stop iTunes from making the sound it does after I've imported a cd?
I have Windows XP media center, and I went to the "Sounds and Audio Devices" folder in Control Panel, but it seems only Microsoft programs are listed there.
