Turn off the sound for a while, and cannot turn it on (louder) anymore

I have a Java application which plays sound (beep). After I turn off the sound using sound control key (lower) on the key board for a while, I will not bring the sound back using the sound control key (louder).
Whenever this happened, my application's CPU usage is above 100%. I am not sure the sound issue caused by my application or by Intel computer itself. I don't have this problem with PowerPC computer.

That is the sound that all IOS devices make when you swipe to Unlock and turn them off using the Power button. Is that what you are referring to?
