Turn on an imac

Hi,
Just bought last month a new imac (20") and I'm having some trouble how to turn it on. It sounds stupid but I press the power button once and listen but nothin else happens. Other times i press it twice and finally it turns on with the tipical "tcharan" sound.
Is this the proper way how to turn it on? Is it changeable for a single click?

It should turn on with one press. If you are pressing reasonably firmly and it doesn't always work you should get it looked at while it is still under guarantee.

When I turn on my iMac it comes up with the login icons which I then choose and log into. The password works and I then get the apple icon and the spinning wheel. After about a minute the Apple icon turns into a prohibited icon. However, if I log in under the guest icon, I can access the wifi and get to Safari. I really don't know what to do next. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Are you running any A-V? If it's an iMac 21.5, I don't think you're running Leopard, 10.5. Probably at least Snow Leopard, 10.6. This is the Leopard forum.
This article says meant for 10.3.9 and eariler, but contains some still useful suggestions.

Try a Safe Boot. Shift at the startup chime and expect a much longer time to boot. This will bring you to a login screen with "Safe Boot" in red.
    Look at this as well.

  • My external hard drive stays on even after I turn off my iMac. Why?

    New 24” iMac (see below)
I have connected my 800 Firewire LaCie 500 Gigabyte external hard drive and it works fine. However, it doesn't turn off after I have turned off my iMac! I used Tiger before this and the very same LaCie external drive always turned off (its blue light would go off).
I am sure that my iMac is Off and is not actually still On.
Please advise, because I am not sure what could happen to my LaCie hard drive if it stays on constantly.
As for the iMac, since the instructions mention turning if off, I figure that turning it off is not harmful. Various people at the Apple Store have told me that keeping the iMac on 24 hours a day is not detrimental to the machine but I am old fashioned, I guess...... with that old fashioned paranoia about letting machines stay on all day. If I am wrong, please tell me.

Dear Dennis at LaCie support: Thank you so much for your reply. I did what you said and did indeed discover that when I unplug the LaCie 500 gig hard drive from my iMac, the hard drive turns off, which proves that there is powering still sent through the FireWire bus. It did not turn off with Tiger on my older iMac (the round white semi-circular base iMac).
BTW: I also have a LaCie 125 gig external hard drive bought several years ago. I am assuming that it has a FireWire which is rated at that 400 rather than the 800 that my 500 gig hd has. Am I right? If yes, then I will look for the cord that matches that hd. I hope that LaCie prints the number on the cord because if not, I will have a hard time.
I do see that on the new 24“ Intel iMac, the 800 port is the one farthest to the right in the back of the iMac, and the 400 port is to the left of it.
Wish me luck. I still have to figure out how I will use the 125 gig. I am now using the 500 gig for the Time Machine backups and the .Mac Backup. Also, other of the usual.
Thank you again,, Dennis. Makes me glad I bought La Cie hard drives.
I hope that the smaller one doesn't fritz up on me, since I bought it several years ago.

  • When I turn on my iMac, it shows a black screen and says 'No bootable device - enter boot cd and press any key'.  Not sure how to fix this.

When I turn on my iMac, it shows a black screen and says 'No bootable device - enter boot cd and press any key'.
I'm not sure what to do, I did not recieve a cd with my mac to boot it up (I ordered it online).
Also I can't find my harware serial number (I've tried many times to input what I thought it may be from my receipt).  I saw that I need this number to contact apple support, my 90 day complimentary support is still valid so I wish to contact them.
I don't know much about apple products as this is my first apple computer so any information is helpful.

Hold down the Alt/Option-key at startup of your iMac to get the Boot Selection screen.
From that choose to boot into OSX.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and reset your OSX to be the default.
The new iMacs have OSX 10.7 Lion preinstalled and don't come with any CD/DVD anymore.
Instead OSX Lion includes a new feature called "Lion Recovery".
Have a read here About Lion Recovery

  • When turning on my imac, it loads to a blue screen with a turning wheel and never gets passed that. I have tried booting to safe mode and it still doens't work.

When turning on my imac, it loads to a blue screen with a spinning wheel. It never gets passed that screen. I have tried power up to safe mode and it still doesn't work. I have music files saved on the computer and I don't want to lose any of my files. Can someone help me?

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, and see if that fixes it. BTW. detailed computer and OS info goes a long way to solving problems.

  • Every time i turn on my iMac my iTunes opens with a window asking me to sign in with my password , how can i stop this ?

Every time I turn on my Imac my itunes opens as I have set up to but a window pops up asking me to sign in with my itunes password , is there a way to stop this as it's quite annoying .
    Many Thanks

Correction: this is for automatic logon of the iMac itself.
    In SystemPreferences/Users&Groups  login items tab:
    remove the line
iTunes  with the minus sign at the bottom.
then also iTunes Match if you have it.

  • HT4413 I migrating from my macbook to new imac. nothing showed up until I turned off the imac but everything I had done previously on the imac disappeared.

I was migrating from macbook to a new imac.
Nothing showed up until I turned off the imac.
When I restarted the imac everythign I'd previously done was gome and the migrated macbook desktop had taken over.
How do I bring back the original imac settings.
    Thanks

You can't. When you migrate user accounts, those settings will be used. That's the point of migrating, not to have to reset things Peruse Pondini's Setup New Mac guide for details.
If you want to revert to the original user settings, create an new admin user account. That'll use the default user setup.

When i turn on my iMac its sounds like a light bulb struguling

Not sure what a struggling light bulb sounds like. It is very hard to describe sounds sometimes. Is it an electrical buzzing or crackling sound? Does the computer still startup normally after the sound? You have Lion so I wonder if it is a new iMac. If so, call AppleCare.

  • I turned on my iMac, mounted Firefox and was told it would no longer work - Download and install Firefox4 (FREE) which I did, but now the error message says it's not supported on this architecture. What to do?

Today I turned on my iMac (OSX 10.5.8 1.8GHz PowerPC G5, 1.25 GB DDR SDRAM) mounted Firefox and was prompted to Download and install Firefox4 (FREE) which I did.
I was prompted to replace the previous Firefox with the newly downloaded and now I can't find the old version and the new version says it isn't supported on this architecture. The icon has a zero with a slash across it.
What do I have to do?

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac.

For an unofficial Firefox 4 compatible version (TenFourFox) that runs on PowerPC Macs with OS X 10.4.11 or OS X 10.5.8 you can look at:
