Turn on firewall?

Should I turn on firewall protection in the 'Sharing' preferences if I am doing nothing with my internet connection except using the internet? I am not maintaining a shared folder or doing any music sharing or anything like that.
Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Well lets stop for a minute and talk about this. Should you turn on the firewall, the basic answer is yes. But what kind of internet connection do you have? dialup, cable, dsl etc. Do you have your mac connected direcly to the internet connection or do you have a router between your mac and the internet connection?
If no router then turn on the firewall because you do need something between your mac and the internet connection. If you have a router however then you do not have to turn on the firewall on the mac. You should be on a private ip and all the outside world can see is the router and not your mac.

Some folks have discovered that changing their DNS service fixes FaceTime connection issues.
    The ideal way is to configure your modem/router with DNS service, but often settings in System Preferences/Network/Advanced/DNS on your Mac will override the router settings. Try either of these;
    OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
    Google Public DNS
    8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

Hi Jen.  My daughter just compleated her nursing program and is now working as a full time nurse.  Focus and study hard and soon you will be there too.  Now to the problem at hand.  I have the same problem.  I gave up on it and satisfied myself with my iPod without the upgrade.  Reason being I've read so many posts of people having problems after the upgrade.  But I'm sure other factors are involved.  Nevertheless here is the fix most say works to solve the problem:  What ever virus protection you have installed on your computer, disable it.  Then try to install the update. After that enable the protection. I had Kaspersky, and it does it's job well. The thinking is, the virus protection is blocking the upgrade.  Hope this works.   Charlie

I have a 6.1.6. MAC desktop and my on-line bank has recommended I download  separate anti-virus software and turn on Firewall
    Please advise

I concur with Etresoft. If they persist in their demands for you to install AV software and turning on a firewall, ask to speak to a manager of the bank and suggest to them that you are seriously considering changing banks. That usually changes their tune.

  • Turn on firewall when laptops are not on corp networks?

    Hello,
I've been given the task to turn the Windows firewall on when the Windows XP/7/8 laptop is not on any of our Corp networks, is this possible?  They
are all on our Domain, so I'm not sure how a GPO will know if the laptop is on our network.  If it can contact our Domain then turn off but if it can’t then turn on.
Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
You needn't to achieve it with any task or Group Policy.  You can customize four settings for each type of network location in Windows Firewall.(See screenshot below):
Domain networks, Home or work (private) networks and public networks have their own settings.
You could achieve your requirement as these steps:
    1. Under Domain networks, turn Windows Firewall state as off.
    2. Under other networks(Home and public etc), turn Windows firewall state as
    on.
In this way, it will meet you.

  • Itunes says I don't have an internet connection but I can access the internet.  I turned my firewall off.  How do I get onto itunes store

I can't access my itunes store, it says I don't have an internet connection but I do.  I tried updating to the newest version of itunes, turned off my firewall, checked to make sure itunes was allowed in my internet options.  what else can i do?

    Hello bigblue8
Check out the following articles for troubleshooting access to the iTunes Store. The first one will probably get you started enough to get it taken care of. If it does not the follow up article should definitely solve it for you.

  • Turning off Firewall Kills Internet

I am using my Mac Mini Server as a DHCP server, Firewall, and NAT device.  I use a WiMax USB dongle as my internet connection.  The dongle uses a connection software that constantly fights with my firewall.  The firewall will cause it to disconnect and interfere with the connection process.  I know this because when I turn off the firewall, the connection software easily connects to my WiMax service and stays connected.   Not only that, but the behavior doesn't occur when I connect the dongle directly to a different computer.  The problem is no internet traffic is passed to the client computers or the server when the firewall is turned off.  Is there a way to turn off the firewall and still have the NAT pass internet traffic?
    Kooly

The Mac OS X Server Internet sharing (NAT) feature requires the use of the Mac OS X Server firewall, so no you cannot turn it off.
It would be worth seeing if your WiMax dongle has any newer software available to download, also it is possible to get a hardware router and use 3G data dongles, it might be worth seeing if a similar approach can be done with a WiMac dongle.

  • How to temporarily turn off firewall to allow download of Adobe

Tried to download new Adobe Flash Player. Started to download but stopped asking to turn off my Firefox firewall. Don't know if I should and how to do it.

Firefox is a browser, not a firewall. Follow the instructions below.
There are 2 versions of Adobe Flash:
*an '''ActiveX version''' for IE only
*a '''Plugin version''' for most other browsers including Firefox
*On a Windows system, you should always update both individually.
'''''You do not appear to have the Plugin version for Firefox installed. ''''' If you did, in Add-ons > Plugins you would see "Shockwave Flash ''(version)''". If "Shockwave Flash" is there and is disabled, click the "Enable" button.
Check your Plugins often --> http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
*only the most popular/used Plugins are known by this page
*page will detect only installed, '''''enabled''''' Plugins
    '''<u>Install or update Adobe Flash</u>'''<br />
#'''<u>Using Firefox</u>''', go to the following link and SAVE the download to your desktop so you can find it later. Un-check any items on that page that you do not want to download (i.e., "McAfee Security Scan Plus":
#When the download is finished, close Firefox (File > Exit '''''OR''''' Firefox button > Exit)
#Click or double-click on the file you just saved to your desktop
#*In the installation window that appears, click the box to the left of "I have read and...." to place a check mark in the box
#*The "Install" button in the lower right corner will now be highlighted, click it.
    #*The installation is quick.
#Start Firefox and test your installation here: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
#To update/install the ActiveX version for IE '''''only''''', repeat the process, '''<u>but use IE to go to the above website</u>'''.

  • I have to turn off Firewall to send files to ftp server

My ISP changed to a different server, since when I have had to turn off the firewall on my Mac 10.4.8 if I want to connect to it to upload or download files.
If the Firewall is on, Transmit (my ftp program) seems to be able to log in, but the list of files doesn't appear. The staus reads as 'status: retrieving list of files'. When I turn off the Firewall, the list of files appears.
Have 'passive mode' on or off makes no difference.
    Any thoughts gratefully received.
    Kind regards
    Richard

Have you asked your ISP what changes you might be required to make?
They changed something required to login. Why is this a "mac" issue?
When you have Firewall turned on, and try an upload...you can examine the logs to see what kind of things are logged during this apparent FTP failure.
OK, Have you tried another FTP client? (CyberDuck, Fetch, etc)
Have you tried using Terminal to do a manual FTP (and do away with the silly GUI's?)
    Enable firewall
    open Terminal.
    type ftp<enter>
type open [name/IP of your server location]<enter>
    you'll be asked for authientication...login...
    type ls<enter> {that's an ell, and an ess}
Any results? (type quit<enter> to end your FTP session
