Turn on imac without power switch

Is there a way to turn on my imac without the power switch?  This week I have had to push the button harder to turn on my imac.  Today it won't turn on.  The button doesn't feel right when I push it.  I have a call into a mac repair guy but haven't heard back.  I wish I could get into my computer now.
Is there a keyboard combination I could push?
There's a little hole on the back of the computer below the ac connection.  Anyone know what that is for.   I Bought the computer in 2007.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

mende1,
I went to an Apple reseller and they told me that my imac was something they could no longer get parts for.  How odd I bought it in March 2007.  My only option is find a used part and have it put in.  I called Apple as I used to see if I could get the part number but they don-t have parts lists for that anymore.  I found some parts of ebay that look like it but do not if it is for my computer.   this is the link.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-iMac-G5-17-iSight-WHITE-POWER-SWITCH-Board-Button- with-cable-593-0156-/120920713792?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c276faa40    I have no idea if you know about this kind of thing but you seem helpful and have answered so many posts I am trying.  The problem is I have info fom my receipt that says my model is 2 ghz intel core duo and this ad says g5 and isight  I don't see those numbers on my paperwork but I looked them up on wiki and it seems to be the right year.  It is a white computer and it has the built in camera.  Mayabe that is the isight.  This seller has several ads for the same part number and another says 1.83 ghz and mine says 2 ghz on the receipt.  When I used to turn on my computer I remember it saying outloud 1.83 ghz.  Just wonderinf if you know.  I know I have the white computer that they made from 2004 and 2006 and that it is 17 inches.  It has EMC 2114 on the bottom which was the number I used to identify my computer on macfixit and they called it an imac 17 inch 2 ghz.

  • Turning on iMac G5 power PC only shows ? mark inside a tiny file folder on

When i booted up my G5 iMac today only a tiny file folder appeared in the center of the screen, inside it was a ? symbol alternating with a blue/black head cartoon. Apple technician said reset the PRAM. Immpossibe to hold down 4 keys and also turn the power back on on this 17 inch G5 with the power button on the back. I restarted with disk# ! from CD that came with the G5, but couldn't get it to install anything, then wouldn't shut down by a Force quit. Finally got it turned off. Now I am on old iMac trying to get help, as it is too late to get help from Apple support on the phone.
Has anyone seen this "?" mark icon before? Help!

    Hi Poikaa,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Why is it impossible to reset the PRAM?
The little folder with the "?" in it means, that the
computer cannot find a bootable system folder. This
is a very common icon and most long-time Mac users
saw this somewhen during their career.
Insert the Tiger install DVD and boot while holding
down the c-key. Once the installer has started and
you selected the language, go to the MENU and select
"Disk Utility". Repair the disk and repair
    permissions.
Quit disk utility and restart while holding down the
Apple-Option-P-R keys until you heard the startup
chime for 3 times. Then release the keys and let it
boot. Does the problem persist? yes, it did persist
    addendum to my problem:
I inserted the start up disk, as instructed by an Apple technician that said he could solve all my problems, I could not reset the Pram, as i could not turn on the power button, while holding down the rest of the keys. Button is on the back of the machine to the left.
after many repeat manipulations as directed by the Apple person, none of which helped, he turned me over to an expert. He was more helpful and ran a hardware test, which said all parts passed, and the folder icon and ? mark meant that the machine couldn't find the Start up and it would not boot, and I had to take it into an Apple store. I had told them the machine was beeping, found out that meant the Hardrive was crashing.
That's what they told me at the Apple store and that none of my data could be salvaged. Under my service plan i bought, the new hard drive is covered. But because of all the manipulations the technicians online told me to do, the data was impossible to salvage. So i am without my computer, and will have a Tabula rasa with nothing saved on my one year old purchase of the 2005 iMacG5, which was a demo, but only a year from manufacture. Apple store says hardrives only have a 3-5 year life. How about mine two years? I am very depressed about App;e products now, and their technicians help online.

  • How to turn iPhone on without power button

My phone is not turning on ...and my power button is off...i tried to plug in to the pc it dosent work.,...please help....my power button does not work and when i plug in many charges it dosent work

The only other way to power on an iPhone would be by plugging it in to charge. If you have tried multiple usb cables and wall adaptors and it is still not powering on then book an appointment at an Apple Store to have the iPhone evaluated.

  • Turning on iPad without power button

My power button on my ipad4 is no longer working. I understand I can turn it off by using assistive touch, but how I can turn it back on again afterwards? I am concerned about this because I am going to be travelling and not using it much so I don't want the battery running down so I can't turn it back on again. Many thanks.

The only other way to turn it on, is to plug it into power.  When plugged in, it should automatically turn on.

  • Zen Micro Power Switch Prob

I have had my 6gb Zen Micro for about a month now and have been very pleased. But this morning, to my horror, when I woke up and tried to turn it on the power switch wouldn'work. My Micro still turns on if you put the battery in, and the hold feature still works, but when I shift the switch to the left to turn it on or off nothing happens. I haven't droppped it once or messed with anything in it. I don't know what to do. Has anyone had this problem before? Does anyone have any advice on something to try or what to do?

My Zen Micro has recently developed the same problem. I contacted Support, and they have informed me that I have to pay a $25 fee to get it fixed, and that amount could grow based on the cost of repairs. Quite frankly, I'm upset. This is twice that the player has failed. I RMA'd the first due to a headphone jack problem (which was caused by faulty wiring, which Creative will refuse to admit). This second player has a similar issue. The electronic contacts must not be built/soldered correctly. I will not be recomending this player to anyone I care about, as Creative has proven to have terrible support and exquisitely terrible design. I will not be purchasing another Creative product, due to my lack of confidence in this player. Creative has not even made an attempt to solve my problem, only directing me to the self-guided website that merely showed how unresponsi've their support really is. They have now supplied me with RMA information for my refurbished player, to send into them. I will not likely send this player in. Instead, I'll go peddle the piece of junk off on Ebay, and take the money and put it towards a player that's been proven to be more reliable than Creative's Zen series - an iPod. I know that word is almost a profanity in these forums, but Creative hasn't left me much of a choice. Goodbye Creative, I hope you won't miss my money. As much as I don't like to support Apple, I'm going to now. So enjoy your angered and frustrated Zen users who you don't seem to want to serve. Maybe once you start making quality products again, I might consider buying in.

  • Lacie D2 HD crashes iMac upon turning Lacie power switch off

I have a newish Lacie D2 external 1T hard drive (thunderbolt and USB 3 ports) attached via the thunderbolt port to my newest iMac.
All was working just fine until last month when, after ejecting the Lacie and then turning its power off at the Lacie power switch I noticed that my iMac (OS X 10.10.2) screen immediately went black and the iMac began its restart routine. I have tried both thunderbolt ports and the Lacie crashes the iMac consistently. The USB 3 port works just fine and does not crash the iMac.
I have run Disk Utility and it reports no problems. The files on the Lacie are fine and I can copy files to and from the Lacie as usual.
    Suggestions???
    Thanks in advance,
    Bill..

Thankyou for the helpful and considered reply. Your suggestion that the Lacie drive circuitry has been damaged is the conclusion I'm coming to as well.
I have subsequent to this post tried a second Lacie external HD that uses the thunderbolt ports and experienced no problems upon powering of the external HD. This suggests that the crashing problem is localised to the problem Lacie drive. I was concerned that one or both of the iMac's thunderbolt ports may have been damaged.
As you suggest, I may have to purchase another external drive and copy all the contents from the failing Lacie before consigning it to the trash pack. For the moment I have implemented a very high tech solution: a piece of masking tape over the Lacie's thunderbolt port !!
    Thankyou
    Bill..

  • Grey screen with message "turn off computer with power button until switch off then press again power button"

    Dear all,
I'm very hungry with my iMac and my Time Capsule :
I try for two weeks to restore my iMac without any success...
I wait 80 hours to finally have the message again and again : "to restart your computer : turn off computer with power button until switch off then press again power button".
But my iMac do not work !
    Could you help me?

    Hello, that's a kernel panic...
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X 10.6 Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Mac Pro turning on when switching on external power switch

    Hi,
I have my studio including the Mac Pro behind a couple of power switches (Phonic power conditioners). Often, when I switch on the power switch that has the Mac connected to it, the Mac turns on without me having to press the Mac's own power button.
Why is this? Does the Mac get some kind of power surge when I turn on the power conditioner making it think there was a power outage?
The Mac is always fully shut down before I turn off the power switches.
"Restart automatically after a power failure" is turned off in the system preferences.
    Best,
    Maarten

that is freaky. mine does a similar thing. i've observed my imac switch on all by itself. i turn it off in the morning when i leave for work and when i get back home in the evening i find the imac on but is in sleep mode. i've seen it happen right before my eyes once. but it doesn't happen all the time. maybe once to twice a week... trojan maybe? maybe we need an exorcist? it is definitely not the schedule/start or wakeup facility under preferences... energy saver... since i've never turned that
featuret on. although i do use the schedule to switch off my mac at 12 pm every weekday. maybe its another undocumented feature of mac leopard (among many other things). i sure never had this problem when i was using tiger.

  • Is there a fix yet for the no sound problem with lion on the iMac without having to restart every time I switch the computer on?

Is there a fix yet for the no sound problem with lion on the iMac without having to restart every time I switch the computer on?

Try booting in Safe Mode by holding the the shift key immediately after powering on your system. Safe boot mode will for a directory check of your startup volume, then load only the required kernal extensions (kext files), and deletes some cache files. Once the system boots into Safe Mode you can simply restart the system to see whether the issue has been resolved.
If you still have the issue try resetting the SMC by shutting down the system and disconnecting the power cord for ~15 seconds, then reconnecting the power cord. Next, reset the parameter RAM (PRAM) by holding down the option-option-P-R keys after powering ON the system. Wait until the iMac restarts twice, then let the system boot normally.

  • Hi i have iMac G5 Power PC with dead logic board, when i turn it on screen is dead. Is it possible to recover data off it by hooking up via firewire to my newer G5 3.06Ghz with IntelCore

Kia ora, hi i have an older (2003 or 4) iMac G5 Power PC 2GHZ - when i turn it on the screen stays dead but the light below screen comes on & i can hear fan (after a few mins on the fan gets noisy).I think the logic board may be dead & can not afford new one & I would like to recover some files & stuff from it and have heard you can recover stuff using a firewire cable so i got cable (firewire 400 to 800) but i am unsure how exactly to do it.
Can anyone out there please explain how i might do it
    Thankyou very much
ps my first post on mac forums so hope i got it right

You can remove the hard drive from the iMac and put it in an external enclosure.  You could try using Target Disk Mode to transfer data.  Click on the blue link to get the instructions on how to transfer the data.

  • Why can I not restart or shut down my imac without using the power button?

why can I not restart or shut down my imac without using the power button?

Reset the SMC and then try a restart or shutdown from the drop down menus.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Then if that doesn't work, backup because you have an OS X issue that will require either a repair or reinstall.

  • Imac power switch

Just purchased a new iMac yesterday. Has anyone had problems when pressing the power switch and you hear the chime, screen flashes, then goes black?
It seems to only happen when I had it unplugged. After a few tries it powers up to the desktop.

    Hello TM:
The chime (one) is normal.  That indicates the Mac has successfully performed a start up self-test.  The screen flash and the black screen is definitely not normal.  I would contact Apple at once (store or Applecare) and request a replacement under warranty.

  • PXIe-1062Q Power switch will not turn of chassis

I have a PXIe-1062Q PXI Chassis that I can turn on with the front mounted power switch, but it won't turn off again.  Is there something wrong with it, or am I missing something in the way that it's set up?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Never mind.  Figured it out.  I need to press the power button for several seconds and then it turns off.

  • PXIe-1075 Power switch will not turn off chassis

    Hi,
I think I am having trouble turning my PXIe-1075 chassis off with the front mounted power switch. When I press the power switch, the green LED will ficker and the PWR LED on my PXIe-8360 MXI card will flicker from green to red and then back to green. I have a PXI-1042 chassis as well that seems to turn off properly. The switch on my PXI-1042 chassis has two positions, but the switch on my PXIe-1075 only seems to have one position. I am in a spot where I will need to power off my chassis to move it occasionally. Does it sound like my PXIe-1075 chassis has an issue? Am I missing something? I also tried holding the power switch. This will cause all the installed modules active light to turn off, but the PWR light on the switch and the PWR light on the MIX card will stay the same.

    Hello,
The 1075 has two modes for shutdown.  You can select between the modes with the 'inhibit' switch on the back of the chassis.  When this switch is in the default position, the chassis will power down when you shut down the controller in the chassis (I'm not sure if it will automatically power down with the MXI connection when you shutdown the PC- I do not believe it will).  When the switch is in the manual position, the chassis does not shut down with the controller and you must use the Inhibit signal on pin 5 of the Remote Inhibit and Voltage Monitoring connector.  I believe your chassis is in 'Manual' mode.  More information on this is available in the manual on page 2-12:
    http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/372537b.pdf
I do not think that the power button on the front can be used to power off the chassis.

Actually the rice is not very effective, you really want to use a desiccant. There are products out there that work really well, the silica gel is a much better alternative to rice. See our blog post about what to do next time this happens:
