Turn Photoshop into Corel PHOTO-PAINT

At the request of a couple of Photoshop enthusiasts in these forums, they thought I should post this feature request.

May I suggest a single suggestion, "Turn Photoshop into Corel Photo-Paint"?
In support of Harry Teasley and Mark Reynolds, I have created these lists of features included in both packages, that if not ignored might win over some Corel PHOTO-PAINT fans. Not that Adobe Photoshop is hurting for more customer base, but you get the idea. Oh! And none of these suggestions would remove any of Photoshop's existing functionality!
Here's a list of features that Corel PHOTO-PAINT has that Adobe Photoshop does NOT (as far as I know):
Mouse wheel zoom snaps to 100%.
Zoom tool actually zooms to selection bounds, even if it's greater than the document's bounds.
Cutting, copying, pasting and deleting selected layers.
File >> New From Clipboard.
Renaming menu bar commands and moving/copying them around at will.
Mapping arrow keys to keyboard shortcuts (CTRL+up and CTRL+down are my favorite)
Interactive Object Transparency Tool (wineglass tool).
Swatches panel width @ 1 swatch wide.
Ability to have larger swatches.
Click and hold on a swatch to see warmer, cooler, darker and lighter versions of that swatch.
Clicking a layer in the document to toggle between transform, rotate, warp and perspective.
If you select a layer, perform a single action on that layer, and undo that action, PP doesn't select the previous layer you had selected.
Checkpoints.
Reasonable price.
And here's a list that neither Photoshop or Corel PHOTO-PAINT has (as far as I know):
Creating new menu bar commands (wherever you want them) and assigning scripts to them.
Mouse wheel zoom does not maintain position when zooming way out and back in.
Brush strokes are not natural like Corel Painter and have a "skip rock" side-effect to them (yes, even with spacing set to 1 and smoothing checked).
Adding an alpha channel to the standard color picker.
Fully supported PNG alpha (even Photoshop creates artifacting that I've only seen present itself in Maya, but Pixelformer fixes the problem and saves the PNG appropriately). (more info)
Granted, there are a couple of features that Photoshop has, even from a Corel PHOTO-PAINT-biased standpoint, that I find extremely beneficial!
The first opened or newly-created document opens maximized (small thing, but very handy).
Vector shapes (though, still not truly vector).
Layer effects (and the drop shadows are flawless).
The healing brush! Just awesome!
I'm sure there are a multitude of other features within Adobe Photoshop that I will grow to love, but these are the ones that stick out to me now, after having been forced to use Photoshop over the last couple years.
And I don't steal software either, so that's part of the reason I've grown up using Corel's products.

He was trying to argue that Photoshop had a more reasonable price with Elements.
I was only pointing out that Corel also has a cheaper alternative to PHOTO-PAINT. In fact, you can't even BUY PHOTO-PAINT solo. You have to buy the entire Graphics Suite.
This wasn't always the case, however.

You will need to do that by syncing them with a computer and then syncing the computer with the iPad.

  • Did Photoshop Steal Features From Corel PHOTO-PAINT?

I emailed this old-school PHOTO-PAINT tutorial guy from forever ago and he gave me this list of features that PHOTO-PAINT had before Photoshop:
PP had floating Objects before PS had layers (they are the same thing)
PP had unlimited multiple levels of undo while PS only had 1 undo.
PP had lenses before PS had styles (these were both based on methods to incorporate non-destructive alterations to objects/layers and to the image) .
PP had clip masks before PS had layer masks (again, same thing)
PP had a Paint on Mask Mode before PS had Quick Mask
    Anyone know anything about this?

Yeah I like how he stated in a previous stupid post that he's been doing this stuff for 15 years!! Come on, did anyone look at his profile pic?? I mean he's still in school and all, must have been doing this stuff when he was in diapers. You'd think he knows it all by now, oh wait I forgot he does!!
You can't possibly understand how productive this can be unless you have relied on it for so long (myself, 15 years). I literally use this command ALL the freakin' TIME!
Upon farther review I'd say he picked out a few brain cells too:

  • After upgrade to 10.4.x Corel Photo-Paint 11 refuses to start

I upgraded from Mac OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4.x (currently all updates done, so version is 10.4.8).
Anything works, beside a few minor things that got solved so far. However there is one big problem I deal with:
I have installed Corel Draw 11 on OS X 10.3.9 and it worked great. Now I tried to open Photo-Paint 11 (part of the package). It seems to start for a few seconds, but then does not open. No error message, nothing.
The system.log does not show any entries, same to panic.log as well as other log files I have access to.
Interestingly all other components of Corel Draw 11 (Corel Draw itself, Corel Trace and SBProfiler) are working as they should, just not Photo Paint.
Has anyone made same experiences and has a solution for this problem ? I know this software is old, but nevertheless works fine for me. So I would really look forward if someone can assist me.

    I got it working myself
Maybe others are dealing with the same problem, so here is what I did:
At Corel's support website I found no information about similar problems, just a description how to set back the current workspace to factory defaults.
This is done by clicking at the program icon to start the software and then holding down the shift key immediately after clicking. Then a message box opens asking for confirmation.
Although I had done some custom settings to the workspace I had nothing to lose and gave it a try. Voila
Not sure what the reason behind is; I think that there are old configuration files existing or settings got mixed up for whatever reason.
Before I did so, I renamed the matching *.plist file at my user's library/preferences folder to *.plist.old - but this did not bring any improvement (in fact, even no new plist file became created).

  • Turn picture into water color painting

in the video I watched on YouTube of Apple iOS 8 wwdc 2014 presentation they were displaying features for the photo editor. At one point they showed how you could press a button and turn a photo into a water color painting. I would like some help on how to do this, what do I need to download, ect.
    Thanks for the help.

Here is one app for that which has good ratings: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/waterlogue/id764925064?mt=8

  • Hint : Corel Draw and Corel Photo Paint 8 LE legit &  free download

I found this while searching for good software for OS9 :
    http://main.system7today.com/software/corelgraphics8/corelgraphics8.html
Basically its the full Corel Suite ( has some Potoshop capabilities ) for free.
The only thing is you can only have open one document at a time , but no restrictions in save/edit or whatever. Also a great Help System how to learn graphics manipulation.
This runs extremely well under OS 9.22 with enough Ram. ( needs PowerMac CPU)
On the site is even more goodies to find. Also note that Corel has made their WordProcessor "WordPerfect" free for Mac OS. It's as good as MS Word.

  • Satellite U92T/01Y - Touchscreen not support by Photoshop or Corel

I have Corel Draw Suite x5 that Corel reckons it's touch screen supportive and Adobe Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud). Corel Photo-Paint X5 doesn't even register my finger dragged across the canvas, and Photoshop lets me draw only if I start outside the canvas first which makes it impossible to draw with.
I've read it's something to do with Windows 8 using Microsoft Ink and Adobe at least prefers a legacy API to draw to the screen. Is there a driver to fix this issue?
Seem Adobe wont budge so I was wondering if Toshiba have a workaround for this please?

I dont think that these are notebook issues.
I mean the system recognized the touchscreen properly and the driver functions as well.
The issue isnt related to touchscreen driver but this is caused by 3rd party software which probably doesnt support the hardware correctly.
In my opinion this should be fixed by application manufacturers like Corel or Adobe.

Greetings from a Photoshop Newbie. I need a computer, preferably a Mac laptop, with some serious processing power. I take photos with a Pentax 645Z; files are 50MB raw. I upload from Adobe Bridge and manipulate the photo, sometimes turning them into files in excess of 250MB. I cannot resize as the large files are needed for enlargements. Have all sorts of problems trying to manipulate, add effects and saving most large files. I need some serious processing power. Can anyone suggest what Mac i should purchase? I thank you in advance for your help :-)

It sounds as if you're having some system-related problems now, unrelated to processing power as such. In particular, a buggy video driver can cause everything to slow to a crawl.
Medium format files are big, true, but not so big as to cause significant slowdowns on a normally functioning and reasonably current computer. A laptop will always be slower than a well-equipped desktop system, though. Mac vs PC plays no part in this, performance is unrelated to platform.
Bottlenecks are different in ACR and Photoshop, so that should give you a clue. ACR is computing-intensive and mostly limited by CPU speed. Photoshop, however, is mostly bandwidth-intensive and mainly limited by memory and disk throughput. It's also sensitive to GPU issues.

  • Can fcp turn a photo into a photo

A friend has a green screen for video work, I took the family by and took some pictures to make a christmas card out of and I got it all chromakeyed in fcp as I wanted. (no photo chromakey software)but I am stuck trying to figure out how to turn it into a jpeg. compressor gives photo options but it still remains with a .mov extension. I tried changing the extension to jpeg but iphoto still wont open it. I really dont want to buy a $100+ program to do this with .
    thanks kurt

This question was asked before (using FCP for print purposes) and the original poster concluded that the output, while suitable for video, was wholly unacceptable when printed. He went and purchased a copy of Photoshop Elements (if I remember correctly). It did two things for him - 1, it did a much better and more nuanced job with the green screen removal and 2. it allowed him to keep his original photo at the full pixel dimensions (which was much greater than what FCP would accept).
fwiw, Photoshop is a pretty invaluable program in my tool box.
    Good luck,

  • Problem with saving TIFF from PDF in Photoshop and importing into Corel

I work at a publishing company, and some of our designers use CorelDraw X14. We receive most of our advertising material in PDF format, which I then have to convert to TIFF in Photoshop (I use CS4). Most of the time this works fine, but lately, the TIFF files appear ragged and very low resolution (especially the text) once they are imported into Corel. When I re-open the TIFF files in Photoshop they seem fine, as well as viewing them with a picture manager program. Does anyone have any idea why this happens, and if the problem lies with the may I save the TIFF files or the way they are imported into Corel? TIFF files created from Corel don't have the same problem.

I concur with Bart - they are using the preview because someoen ticked a wrong checkbox or enabled a fast preview mode... Should print and export without issues, though.

  • How do I create a text style in CC libraries? Every time I drag and drop text into library form Photoshop or illustrator it turns it into a graphic.

How do I create a text style in CC libraries? Every time I drag and drop text into library form Photoshop or illustrator it turns it into a graphic.
If I select the text layer and click the text style button in the library it just creates a new text style for Myriad Pro 12pt - I'm not using that anywhere in my document.
Can anyone help? Seems like a bug to me as I'm trying what the video tutorials are saying.
    Thanks

I realize AI is an illustration program.
Do you realize it is an object-based vector-based program? Do you know the difference between raster-based and vector-based content?
My question seems to be all over the forum but no one has been able to answer other than exporting to these file formats, which make text look awful and of no use....
And yet everyone else in the world makes proper web images every day using a plethora of programs, including these...go figure.
    Am I missing something?
    Yep. Pretty much.
Hello Adobe! People use transparency on website logos.
Hello, cocteau! What you're calling "transparency" is inherent to object-based vector artwork. But web browsers don't support object-based vector artwork, except via file formats like Flash and SVG, or by viewing as a PDF in a plug-in version of Reader. Raster imaging in general only supports "transparency" by either indexing a specific color (i.e.; "don't display this color", as in GIF) or including an alpha channel (i.e.; "blend all the pixels with existing pixels, based on values from this extra channel", as in PNG). It's all in the raster file format you use, cocteau; it has little-to-nothing to do specifically with Adobe software. Such things are among the most basic matters understood by someone doing web design.
When I export an eps from .ai file, and open the eps in photoshop,...I save as a gif for the web, it goes back to the original problem...creates jagged text. I"m giving up on this garbage...Thanks a lot adobe! Lower the price of this software if this is all that can be done.
Once it leaves Photoshop (or Illustrator, or whatever) as a non-proprietary raster image format, it's all about what the format can do re "transparency". You can do this stuff with most any graphics program. You should read about basic web design and the differences between raster and vector content, rather than rant.

  • How to age new photo to fit into older photo

I am trying to take a current color photo, turn it into black and white then put the figures from the photo into a 50 year old black and white.   I can turn the new photo into black and white, I can cut the figure out and size it proportionally but it just does not fit .. need to figure out how to "age" the new photo --- tried blur as well as adding noise, still not quite right .. anyone have some suggestions?   Project .. take picture of my grandson and put him in picture of myself at the same age ...

It really depends on the condition of the original black and white. If you upload a the two images or maybe what you have so far it might help in identifying what steps might be needed to make your new image blend with your old image. Without seeing the image, I can only guess...
    Maybe...
Use levels using the output sliders to reduce contrast.
Use Brightness contrast filter to reduce contrast and/or brightness.
Use Hue/Saturation layer to create a black and white which better matches the tone of the original. In the Hue/Saturation dialog, reduce the individual color saturation level to 0% saturation instead of using the master. (Change setting from the default master to the individual colors in the drop down box in upper right hand side of Hue/Saturation dialog.) After each color is set to 0% saturation, adjust the individual color lightness and possibly hue to roll your own black and white photo effect.
    Try using the grain filter.
The link below shows one method of aging a photo. If you skip to page 5 and 6 it shows using the grain filter and adjusting the levels output sliders. Keep in mind since adjustment layers have a mask you can use a brush with black paint to make the effect such as a levels fade in and out. (Tip: Try a brush made for clouds on the levels adjustment layer mask to make the contrast patchy.) Keep in mind you can do this in more than one adjustment layer...i.e. you could set the overall contrast with one levels layer then add a second levels layer over this one and use it to make the new contrast patchy.
    Here's that link:
    http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/old-photo/page-5.php
Page 5 shows the grain filter being applied. Page 6 shows the levels output being used to reduce overall contrast.
If you need scratches and/or bends, the answer is the paint brush and white paint or use a scratch overlay. Look around the net for scratch brushes or scratch overlays.
Use a seach term like scratched Photoshop brushes.
You can also try using the dust and scratches filter to get a faded glowy look that exists in some older images. See the tutorial linked below to see what I mean.
    http://www.idigitalemotion.com/tutorials/guest/old_looking_images/oldlookingimages.html
The above uses a layer mask. If you don't have PSE 9 or PSE 10, you can either use a clipping mask (clipping group if it's older than PSE 8) to make the dust and scratches effect patchy. You can alternately use a soft tipped eraser on the dust and scratch filtered layer and erase where you don't want the effect. I would recommend either using a mask or if you must use an eraser to use a soft edged eraser tip and to set the opacity at a low setting so you can slowly strip away the effect. (You could also try using a cloud brush with your eraser tool to make it erase patchy. Just be sure to switch that brush out before you finish this project or you'll be wondering why your eraser is acting funny at some later date. )

  • Need help placing people / objects into another photo ...realistically

Hi, I've been a Photoshop user for many years now and have adopted CS4 when it initially came available. My photoshop skills are to a good standard however one thing I always find difficult is taking a selection from one photo (usually a person / object) and placing it into another photo.
I am able to correct the size and scale and maintain the aspect ratio but I never seem to be able to make the photo look convincing, I know this is a basic part of Photoshop, but I was wondering if any of you could offer some tips or advice on how to make the person / object more realistic and hopefully so that clients won't be able to spot it was missing in the first place.
    Thanks in advance

The Daily show is a satirical show in the US with John Stewart. As a kind of running joke on "Photoshopped", they often badly photoshop things together, cut and paste style.
Whether things will ever look correct, is to do with LIGHT. The light on your background has to be the same as the light on your foreground subjects. Color can be easily tweaked and matched but light cannot. Photographers with the right expertise (thinner on the ground than you might think) can look at the light in a destination image, and try and match in the studio, but this is a highly skilled area. I once had a professional job where someone had taken David Beckham to a studio - and they wanted the images realistically comped into beach scenes, with broad sunshine, resulting hard shadows, sunsets and horizons. Unfortunately the photographer was obviously more interested in having fun with a high profile client like Beckham for their book, than they were in lighting correcty for the intended destination images.  Impossible without weeks of painting, and I told them. No point in wasting clients time on images like this.

  • I don't use Photoshop - looking for software with similar functionality to Photoshop's Pixelbender / Oil Painting.  Any suggestions?

I don't use Photoshop, I'm an Aperture guy.
I'm looking for software with similar functionality to Photoshop's Pixelbender / Oil Painting.
I'm especially interested in the bending of the pixels, along the lines of impressionist paintings - think van Gogh.
    Any suggestions?

If you are interested in computer simulated drawing and painting effects, have a look at the "ToonIt!" plug-in for Aperture. This will do some of the basic work for you, but you will have to do quite a lot of editing afterwards, to turn the image into a piece of art.
It might be easier, to do most of the drwing and painting yourself in the first place - ArtRage Deluxe is very versatile, if you have a large trackpad and pen.
For example: Applying a light ToonIt! effect "Impressionist2": The diagonal
cross-pattern is due to "Demo" mode - I have not yet bought the plug-in - it is rather expensive:
