Turn process cyan into Pantone purple, then back again?
I'm designing a document that uses black and process cyan. When we go to press, the cyan will actually be our spot color. Yes, I know that is quirky, but that my printer's preferred procedure. So my question is this: I would like to temporarily subsitute all instances of cyan with Pantone Purple (our actual spot color) so I can view it on the screen. Is there a quick and easy way to do this?
This is really a bad workflow all around (though quite common, I think). If something is going to be spot color, it ought to be defined as spot color from the start to avoid confusion, and to make proofing easier. I think the "use one of the process plates" method comes old Quark users who had no ink manager ( I know I used this technique in my first position with a print shop -- though I can't honestly say why, that's just the way we did things).
The nice thing about the ID Ink Manager is it doesn't matter what the spot color definition happens to be, you can always alias it to someething else to make it look right on screen or in the proof, or convert it to process if you decide to change the print method.

So today my iPhone decides to go into recovery mode on me randomly so I plugged it into my Macbook right away, but it wasn't showing up in iTunes so I did a quick internet search as to why that could be. On the Mac support forum I found instructions stating I should make sure I had the current verison of iTunes on my computer, turns out I had been putting off an Update because I didn't like waiting for it to restart n so forth. So I clicked my boucning update friend at the bottom of my screen and it started checking for updates, the bar got maybe a quarter of the way up and then stopped moving all together, I thought something was wrong so I clicked cancel and tried again. The same thing happened so I clicked cancel and went back to the Internet to find more help on my problems. I found yet another forum saying this solution was simple, restart the computer. So i clicked my little apple at the top and pressed restart and that has been the last thing I got to do on my computer because when it restarted it got past the White Apple logo screen and went on to a Blue screen which quickly turned a darker shade and had the loading circle, then back to the previous blue screen, then right back to the darker one. This process it repeated several times and I can't for the life of me figure out what to do. Please someone have a simple answer to this that I haven't Already tried, I have already tried safe mode and it just doesn't work for me. Please please help I need my computer for class it has all my notes and a paper I was doing, not to mention my iphone is still in recovery mode, even when I can get to another computer to fix that I need all the back up files off of my macbook to restore it to what I know it as and not default.

I have a VZW iPhone 5 activated as my main phone, I also have a VZW Samsung Galaxy Nexus that I use a sim adapter and swap the sim to. When I swap the sim from the iPhone 5 to the Galaxy Nexus for a day or so then back to the iPhone 5, I cant pickup LTE signal, it just stay at 3G. Although if I put the sim back in the Galaxy Nexus it still picks up LTE.
The only way i can get the LTE back on my iPhone 5 is by going into VZW and getting a new sim card activated, in return kills my old sim card.
Any ideas or help?? ThanksAs I already said, since the iPhone does not do voice over LTE it must be activated on the Verizon CDMA network just like any other CDMA phone. If the Verizon says you must call them to re-activate it on the iPhone, then that's probably the only answer you're going to get. We're just users. We can't control what goes on on the back end of Verizon's network.
You would have to check discussion forums for Verizon or those dedicated to the Nexus to see if this is a common occurence. -
I turned my imessage off on accident and I turned it back on right away and now my messages only send as text messages
When you turned it on right away, did it complete the activation process? When you go into Settings>Messages, does it show as activated? If not, then turn it off, wait about 15 seconds and then turn it on again. It should activate right away. If not, then see this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4268

Can I put a DVD+R/W Recording into iMovie.. then back to DVD?
Hi all,
New to Macs and must admit I'm asking this question without really trawling through the help manuals at all... but...
If I make a recording to a DVD+R/W from my home DVD player, can I then import that recording to iMovie, edit it it and send it back to iDVD to re-burn it? My Phillips DVD Recorder makes a decent fist of editing a recording but obviously iMovie and iDVD offer greater creativity and flexibility...
Any help or advice would be appreciated... cheers!!
Lukeyour disks have to be finalized - read your ecorders manual, how to accomplish that
if your Mac's drive support +/w media (it should...), handle them as "normale" DVDs...
* DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
* Apple mpeg2 plugin (29$) + Streamclip (free)
* Cinematize >60$
* Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
* Toast 6/7 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
* connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
non of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

Footage from FCP into AE then back again...something's afoot
Hey all,
I have a 5 second clip that needs the attention of After Effects. A small area of my footage needs a paint job, and I've successfully brought the small area of my timeline out of FCP and have started a new composition in After Effects.
I've done the paint job and mission accomplished.
The problem:
I can't get the footage back into Final Cut with the correct aspect ratio. The footage is, in FCP, HDV footage, 1440 x 1080 at 16:9 PAR. It looks great in After Effects, as AE is sizing the movie correctly. But my understanding is that I need to set my composition PAR settings to 1.33 aspect ratio in order to maintain the correct proportion. The PAR dropdown in Composition settings does not give this option. I've also tried 1920 x 1080 with Square Pixels and that doesn't work either.
Can anyone advise me on how I get footage back out of AE without changing the PAR, or perhaps allowing me to choose 1.33 in my Composition settings?
HUGE HELP!
Thank you,
G manHere's the fix for anyone interested:

I have an essentially new MacBook Pro with Lion and all updates applied, and am wondering if this is a hardware or software problem. Essentially with something plugged into the headphone jack, things work as they are supposed to for a while, then the sound will switch back to internal speakers, or sometimes 'digital out' (I can watch it change in the system settings), and then often switch back. It doesn't seem to follow any sort of pattern or be related to any specific application that could be open, and happens with different sources of audio (iTunes, streaming from the web), and different external speakers or headphones plugged in.
Sounds hardware related. If it's brand new, and you're still under warranty I would have it checked out.
I have not experienced this on my computer.
As I understand it, you have analog RCA outputs from an 1/8" to left and right RCA outputs. when you're randomly using the computer, it'll switch to internal speakers, then to digital audio, back to your stereo analog external speakers.
This should not be happening and if it's happening with streaming content (I am unaware of anything that streams in 5.1 digital audio) then this must be something that an apple specialist should look at and consider.
Does this happen with the headphone jack out? when you hold your finger over the headphone jack area does a red beam come out of it *blinking* or just on? This will be a good indicator that your audio hardware is faulty. are you running HDMI out? -
Cineon LOG 2 LIN render then back again
Ok so I've done some reading on the subject of converting from Log Cineon to LIN using the Cineon converter utility effect. The problem is I need to render out the Lin files so I can do some touch ups in Photoshop. However I cannot render it out without clipping the whites to 1. Is it even possible to render out a Lin file that can then be converted back to Log without loosing any overwhite data. Im not sure what Im doing wrong, if anything. I am using After Effects 7.0 pro and photoshop cs2 on a windows based OS. Thanks for any help.
Using Photoshop because of the healing brush tools and the patch and extraction tools. I am a big proponent of the After effects studio tech books, even have the last two editions. But none of them ever talk about what to do if you Convert from Log to Lin render out the sequence and then reimport it and convert back to Log without losing any of the overbright values. I know it sounds strange that I am using PS for this but it is just easier than creating multiple layers that then have to be blended in proper. In any event it is more out of principle now that I want to know if anyone has a procedure for this. I can't be the first one who has tried to convert Log to lin and rendered out a 16bpc image and then wanted to convert it back. Ill mull over my books again, hope I havent turned everyone off this subject

Ok, so I wrote a bunch of data to a Seagate ST2000DL003 3.5 inch 2TB Hard Drive - mac formatted - then put it into a PC and it couldn't read the drive. But when I plugged the drive back into the mac pro the drive was unreadable/corrupt. Does anyone know what's happened and is this data recoverable?
Use Disk Utility "Repair Disk" and see what it says. It may be trivial and easily fixable.

Can I restore Time Machine "B" to Macbook "A" and then back again?
My family had 2 Macbooks-- I'll call them A and B -- each equipped with an external USB hard drive that we used for regular Time Machine backups.
Macbook B contained some digitized family videos. About 8 months ago it was destroyed by spilled coffee (family member shall remain unnamed!) Apple tech said it would cost as much to repair as it would to replace, and I ended up doing neither. Coffee-spilling family member went off to college with a new Macbook Pro (equipped with a thin plastic keyboard cover!!!)
Macbook A continues to be used, and backed up (by a family member who doesn't drink coffee, BTW).
I would like to recover those video files -- at least to burn them onto DVD's or whatever -- but I'm assuming the only way to access files from a Time Machine backup is to restore that backup onto a Macbook.
So I'm wondering if I can be sneaky by restoring Time Machine "B" onto Macbook "A", getting those video files copied off it, and then restoring Time Machine "A" back onto Macbook "A" again. Would there be any ill-effects from doing this?
Thanks!

How to move focus from one JTree node to another one and then back again?
Hi all!
Say I have a very simple JTree
package main;
import java.awt.BorderLayout;
import java.awt.Container;
import java.awt.event.WindowAdapter;
import java.awt.event.WindowEvent;
import javax.swing.JFrame;
import javax.swing.JScrollPane;
import javax.swing.JTextField;
import javax.swing.JTree;
import javax.swing.event.TreeSelectionEvent;
import javax.swing.event.TreeSelectionListener;
import javax.swing.tree.DefaultMutableTreeNode;
public class SelectableTree extends JFrame implements TreeSelectionListener {
public static void main(String[] args) {
new SelectableTree();
private JTree tree;
private JTextField currentSelectionField;
public SelectableTree() {
super("JTree Selections");
addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter() {
public void windowClosing(WindowEvent event) {
System.exit(0);
Container content = getContentPane();
DefaultMutableTreeNode root = new DefaultMutableTreeNode("Root");
DefaultMutableTreeNode child;
DefaultMutableTreeNode grandChild;
for (int childIndex = 1; childIndex < 4; childIndex++) {
child = new DefaultMutableTreeNode("Child " + childIndex);
root.add(child);
for (int grandChildIndex = 1; grandChildIndex < 4; grandChildIndex++) {
grandChild = new DefaultMutableTreeNode("Grandchild "
+ childIndex + "." + grandChildIndex);
child.add(grandChild);
tree = new JTree(root);
tree.addTreeSelectionListener(this);
content.add(new JScrollPane(tree), BorderLayout.CENTER);
currentSelectionField = new JTextField("Current Selection: NONE");
content.add(currentSelectionField, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
setSize(250, 275);
setVisible(true);
public void valueChanged(TreeSelectionEvent event) {
currentSelectionField.setText("Current Selection: "
+ tree.getLastSelectedPathComponent().toString());
}All I need is to move focus from currently selected node, to some other node (does not matter which one), then to "sleep" for a second and finally move it back to return selection to the previously selected node. The only question is how do I do this?Use a Seperate Thread to do it:
Runnable r = new Runnable() {
public void run() {
int k=tree.getSelectionRows()[0];
DefaultMutableTreeNode node = (DefaultMutableTreeNode)tree.getLastSelectedPathComponent();
if(node.getNextSibling()!=null)
tree.setSelectionRow(k+1);
else
tree.setSelectionRow(k-1);
sleepe(k);
public void sleepe(int i){
try{
Thread.sleep(1000);
}catch(Exception e){
e.printStackTrace();
tree.setSelectionRow(i);
}Then start this thread in a mouse click event(or any other similar),but not in TableSelectionListener because >>if the current selected row is 1 then it will execute the valueChanged method of TableSe..li. and we set the selected row to 2 then again it will execute the valueChanged method of TableSe..li.It will repeat till something,or in error.
tree.addMouseListener( new MouseListener(){
public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) {
new Thread(r).start();
public void mouseEntered(MouseEvent e) {
public void mouseExited(MouseEvent e) {
public void mousePressed(MouseEvent e) {
public void mouseReleased(MouseEvent e) {
});Note:it worked perfectly for me. So add all the above in the right place and import necessary.It will execute perfectly. -
