  • Since upgrading to ios5 spell check no longer works on my iPad 2

I have tried turning spell check off and on again and rebooting the iPad but that did not help, what am I supposed to do? Reinstall ios5 because it took me 8 hours the first time round I'm not going through that again.

I have not used the Support Communities before... meaning we pay our med care to answer Apple questions? And where is that answer or at least the... "we are working on it... " comment from Apple. The first post is OCTOBER how is that possible?? Did you see the last quarter Apple profits?
Anyway I too have that problem... where is the red line? Maybe the promotion of writing errors and dumbing us down is... the goal? Obviously with the iPad "keyboard" the redline is needed and how was it left out in the first place?? Hope there is not some simple tick we are all missing... .

  • How do you alter the spell check on an iPad?

I type my name or email and it always suggests something else. I want to add the new word so that it doesn't "correct" it again!

The system setting for spell check  ... go to Settings>General>Keyboard>Check Spelling. You have to keep Auto-Correction enabled to turn Spell Check on, but you can turn spell check off and leave Auto-Correction on.
However, in your case, you want to disable Auto Correction because that is what keeps trying to correct what you are typing.
The way the system is designed to work is that if you keep rejecting the "suggested" spelling of the iPad's auto correct by pressing the X in the blue suggested word, the iPad should eventually learn your word.

  • Adding scientific terms to spell check

Hi. In terms of Maverick's Spell Check, is there a way to import a medical dictionary?
    Thanks

OK. Let's take it very methodically.
    I'm using OS X 10.7.3
You're posting in the Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard forum. (Mac OS X 10.7 Lion has its own separate forum.) Your original post indicates you are using "Mac OS X (10.6.4)".
couldn't find any folders or anything in the Spelling folder
First, you have three Spelling folders. I know Lion hides some stuff, so, because I'm not using Lion, I don't know if you see them all. They are
    </System/Library/Spelling>
only stuff installed by Apple should go in here
    </Library/Spelling>
here go spelling dics for all user accounts
    <~/Library/Spelling>
here go your own spelling dics
LocalDictionary is a file in the latter folder. It may not have been created on your account. To create it, turn spell checking on, type in TextEdit a word the spell checker will flag as wrong, select it, and control-click (or right-click) on it. Choose "Learn Spelling" from the contextual menu. LocalDictionary will be created and the word entered in it. At least, that's what happens on Snow Leopard. I understand it's the same in Lion; maybe you should ask it in the Lion forum, to be quite sure.
TextEdit worked just fine until I tried to do this fix
I'm confused. What action did you actually take? You said you couldn't find the file -- so how did you try "to do this fix"?
now my TextEdit app is LOCKED...
What does that mean? TextEdit no longer responds to commands? If yes, have you tried force-quitting and restarting it?

  • Keyboard input in other languages - How to turn off spell checker?

I have been trying to send text messages on the iPhone in my native language and it kept replacing all the words with english words. I have tried to turn off the spell checking, but no luck. I have asked the Apple Store employees, no luck there either. How can I type my messages in languages other than english? I don't need a spell checker in my language, I just want an option to turn off the english one.

Input is essentially English only for this version of the iPhone.

  • How can you turn off the spell checker in Firefox? (The menu option doesn't work.)

There was a solution to this I came across a long time ago, but I don't remember what it was. I want to turn off my spell checker in Firefox. The usual instructions given for doing this are to go into Options->Advanced and de-select "Check my spelling as I type". This doesn't work. Period. And this is a bug that has been around for a long time in Firefox.
What's a way to disable this? I don't like seeing a bunch of red lines under correctly spelled words that just happen to not be in Firefox's default dictionary, and I don't want to have to add things to my dictionary either.

Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

  • How to turn off spell check

This is covered in the manual:

  • Turning off Text Spell Check

Easy one this...hopefully. Can someone tell me how to turn of the spell check type function in SMS mode. It's causing me problems and even re corrects itself when I've gone back and changed it.

Its not going to be changed. Apple designed it that way on purpose, and it's considered a "feature" of the iPhone - one that has been much touted and advertised, called "Predictive Text".
I agree that I would like to see an option to turn it off -- I could type much much faster on the iPhone without the predictive type...but people have been requesting this feature for over a year (along with cut and paste, etc) and there is no indication it will be changed at any time soon.
One caveat though -- touching the X and dismissing the suggestion really DOES work over time -- once you have dismissed a suggested word twice, it really isn't suggested again. Over the course of a couple weeks, it dismisses most of the words it wrongly suggests. Pain yes, but ultimately it goes away if you consistently touch the X and dismiss it instead of pressing any other key.

  • How to turn off spell check in iTouch?

I've tried everything - there doesn't seem to be anything in Settings. How do I turn off spell-check in iCal and Email?

    To answer your question, try:

on or off. Auto-Correction is on by default.

  • Help me turn off the spell checker

The iApps are usually so intuitive but for some reason I simply can't find a way to turn off the extremely annoying spell checker in Keynote. Not only do I strenuously object to being second-guessed on my spelling by a piece of software, I also get very angry when it tries to foist US English spellings on me when I'm not an American and my system is set up for international English. What's next, an animated paperclip??
Can someone please help me switch it off (Keynote 06)...?

Thanks Kyn, don't know how I missed that...
The remaining issue is the choice of spelling dictionary - I still can't work out how a user with international or UK English settings is being prompted to use US spellings in place of correct English spellings.

  • Turn off spell check in specific documents?

    Hi,
Is there a way to turn off spell check permanently for a single document? I want it to be turned on always for all other documents, but not this one in particular. Thanks!

    Tyler,
Language is a Text Style property and can be set to "None" in the Text Inspector, More pane. If you select all the text in this particular document, and set the Language to None, it appears that your spelling will not be checked. You may want to define a style with this property if you need to apply it to imported text.

  • How do I turn auto-correct off and still have a spell check?

How do I turn auto-correct off and still have a spell check?

I do not believe this.. you can not disable auto correct without disabling the spell checker.. I am struck dumb by this.. I recently bought a mac for the first time.. ive always used windows.. there are more thngs like this than i expected.. I actually find this so ignorant I am lost for words.. this auto correct is a nightmare for me.. and has already caused me a lot of trouble because I have sent emails where words have been changed and i didnt notice and I have unknowingly insulted people.. i use a regular spell checker quite often but apparently I simply have no choice with safari.. oh well I am going to have to find another browser then.. goodbye safari!.. I also use a lot of shortened words and names etc etc.. like for eg I used the shortened word for problems "probs" and it changes it to "probe" and then i go back and change it back to WHAT I WANT TO SAY and it changes it AGAIN!!!!
Does anyone else feel like this is yet another example of how, more and more, we are being treated like morons?
Ok I'll try to stop ranting.. the real point is it should be possible to have a spell checker without auto correct..

  • Turn off Spell Checking permanently

I would like to turn off spell checking permanently. The red underlines disturbs me extremely much.
In Mail my setting for this seems to be accepted, but for other applications (eg Stickies and Text Editor), it turns back to default as soon as I restart the app. This is very annoying, and also very unlogical.
    Is there a solution?

    Wise-***.
As you probably know there are a lot of words that no dictionary understand. Especially if you mix swedish and english in the same documents, and also mix a lot of programming language.
Eg, some words that are underlined in my Stickies now:
Textwrangler, annoying, default, Omnifocus, Omnifocus-inställningar (which means Omnifocus-preferences), hibernatemode, Flash, and so on...
All my life I've never had any problems with spelling and I don't think I need the computer to tell me when I'm wrong, when I know I'm not (I'm not that good with english grammar though, as you may notice).
Bottom line: If I want to turn off a preference on my computer, I want it to be turned off.
There is a solution from 2008, I was hoping that Apple had fixed this...

  • Thunderbird 31 "Spell Check As Type" turns off after 1or 2 corrections. Win 7 system.

Installed TB 31.4, and since updated to 31.6. System is Win 7, up to date, Core i7 and tons of RAM etc.. Used UK English executable but later overwrote it with the US version to see if would fix a spell check problem. The option Check Spelling has always worked (as long as a character is not accidentally selected - a trap for new starters) but ongoing spell checks produce the wiggly underlines, but after a small number are right click corrected, eg. 1, 2 or 3 (varies) the rest of the wiggly lines disappear. I noticed they tended to be in other sentences and lines, but found later that makes no difference. Tried US, UK and Australian dictionaries. Tried Safe Mode. Only use Send Later in TB, but have Firefox with some extensions, but mostly disabled, and used TB with Firefox closed. Also have LibreOffice installed, recently updated. Changed mail-compose-max-recycled-windows from 1 to 0. Use Comodo Internet Security suite, but tried offline with all options off. Nothing tried has made any difference.

Installed British English version of Thunderbird 38.04 beta on top of TB 31.6 (US English version). Has cured the spell check failures, ie. Spell Check As You Type turning itself off on correcting a word or two. Tested with both UK English and Australian English dictionaries. Have not changed mail-compose-max-recycled-windows back from 0 to 1 (will test that and anything else if you request). Many thanks.
