Turned Off iPod Touch 1st Gen During Restore. Did I kill it?

My 1st Generation iPod Touch wasn't being detected by iTunes so I chose the reset option that erases all data. While it was restoring, I thought it froze because the white progress bar under the apple stopped midway and I turned the iPod off. Now when I switch it on, the black screen with the apple logo switches on for about 10-seconds, and then the iPod powers off. My mac doesn't detect it and I've tried holding the home and the sleep key. What else can I do?

If I were you I would call Apple about this problem

  • IPod Touch 1st Gen 1013 Restore Error Code

So I have my iPod touch that I treat with the utmost care and it got stuck in the apple logo on startup. I tried restoring in the iTunes(hold home button and plug in USB) and DFU mode and I always get the 1013 error code. So yesterday I brought it into the Apple Store and they attempted to restore it and it gave them the 1013 error code. He told me that it was a generic error code and it would cost $250 to get a new 3rd Gen iPod Touch, which isn't a very ideal result. So I spent some time thinking about this and I thought why is it my problem that Apple can't fix their iPod especially if it's a generic error code. I take great care of my iPod and have nothing wrong so why should I be paying $250 for a new one? So today I called Apple Care support and after complaining to them they told me that the $250 would be the cost to *JUST REFURBRISH IT!* So I said "so if I am going to pay $250 dollars then shouldn't I just buy a new 32GB 3rd Gen iPod Touch?" The man said he agreed with me and that he was sorry there was nothing else he could do. I then asked if there was a way to see if the iPod had a software or hardware error and he asked if the genius at the store had run a diagnostics test. I said no because all I had was a restore done and I was sent on my way. He said that the store should have run a diagnostics test because it was protocol. So now I have to go back into the Apple Store and get a diagnostics test run on my iPod because the initial genius didn't follow protocol and just insisted that the iPod touch had a hardware failure so it was out of warranty. I highly doubted it was a hardware failure because restoring the firmware is a software issue. And nobody can give me solid facts why it's not, other than the genius thinking he really is a "genius" and telling me it's not because he didn't follow protocol.
So tell me what else you think I should do other than get the diagnostics test run. Any comments or input would be much appreciated.
My overall goal would be to have my iPod replace or fixed for free because that would be the reasonable thing to do. Especially because all the trouble Apple has cause me thus far.

    Have you tried:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

  • Ipod touch(1st gen) stuck in recovery mode and cannot restore??

I just bought a used ipod touch 1st gen.  It was fully functional before I wiped it.  I wanted to remove all of the other person's music and personal info before I started using it. I also wanted to update ios.  I wiped it and when it restarted it was in recovery mode. I have tried to restore it and I keep getting an error message that it could not restore unknown error has occurred  (1).  I have tried troubleshooting and going through all of the steps that Apple suggests and nothing has worked.  Any suggestions?  I just want it restored and updated to the latest ios that will work with it (3.1.1 I believe) I don't know what to do at this point.

  • IPod touch 1st gen goes into recovery mode after shut down or lock

Alright, so I bought a used iPod touch 1st gen from a friend. It was working fine for a few weeks until it started shutting off and going into recovery mode when I locked or turned it off. When off, half of the times I can do a hard reatart and hold the home and hold buttonsand it will turn on. The other times it will just come up with a white screen. When I plug it into my computer, it says it has to be restored. And this is an ongoing loop that I cannot seem to fix. I looked up my serial number and it says it's out of warranty.
So my first question is, is there anyway I personally can fix this problem, or do I have to take it to Apple? My second question is, what are their policies on iPods that were bought used from someone else? And is there a way for me to get a warranty on it to get it repaired if I can't fix it myself or do I have to pay full price on replacement or repairs?

Did you let iTunes restore it? Has the problem continued? The article below discusses how to put your iPod into a recovery mode so you can fix it.

As to your warranty, you no longer have one. Apple will, for a fee, repair your iPod if it needs repairing. There are independent shops who can do it as well - just Google them.

  • IPod Touch 1st Gen and 3.1 update DELETES volume slider

I had a perfectly working iPod Touch 1st Gen/16GB until I updated to 3.1 software. Now I do not have a volume slider.
Yes headphones are in but there is no place to adjust the volume. There is previous, next arrows and play and pause AND its centered in the rectangular area, but no volume slider.
I have restored it 3x in various ways. I have tried 5 times to downgrade the operating system but ALWAYS get an error, so it never completes. Of course the ipsw files where found using google because there isn't any links that work on Apple's site for previous iPhone software. If I try to restore to 3.1 right after that it goes through perfectly.
So it seems that Apple has locked out downgrading once you upgrade! All I want is my volume slider back. How can I get it back if 3.1 deletes it everytime and I can't go back to the previous operating system?
    Thank you.

I too have had this exact same problem, except that I was running 3.0 and hadn't updated to 3.1. I put my ipod on the table overnight, after listening to it, and when I picked it up the next morning, theres no volume slider. I never even unplugged the headphones. Double clicking the home button while on the home screen would bring up the popup to skip songs, and there it says "Dock Connection" even though it not connected to a computer. Multiple reboots an no effect. I've tried different sets of headphones, to no effect. Its like the iPod isnt detecting them being plugged in. The worst part is i DO get sound in the headphones, but no volume control, and the sound level is turned really low. So the headphones ARE working.
I updated to 3.1 just now, and the problem has NOT been fixed. Theres no way anywhere in the settings to adjust the volume. Theres only a limit slider, so I have no way to turn up the volume loud enough to actually HEAR things.

  • IPod Touch 1st gen to iTunes connecting speed

I'm an iPod Touch 1st gen newbie on iOS 3.1.3; My question is when connecting the iPod to iTunes 10.1.1 how long does it normally take for the device to show up? When connecting an iTouch that's OFF (connection turns it on), I find it probably takes 5-8 minutes for the device to show up. I'm left sitting there not sure if I need to do something. Should the device be ON? When using my iPod Nano (2nd gen) it shows up on iTunes very fast and I see the device on the Desktop. iTouch doesn't show up on the Desktop as a connected device even though Finder options is checked on so iPods are recognized. Otherwise, all is well and great with the device. Thanks.

iPod touches and iPhones are not recognized as disk drives and therefore will not appear on the Desktop. I would say that 5-8 minutes to be recognized by iTunes is not normal, however.
You might want to focus your efforts on your Mac. I would check/repair permissions on the HD, remove all earlier instances of iTunes, make sure you are running the latest version of OS X that you can (I think 10.5.8 is the latest you can use). You might have to uninstall iTunes and download/reinstall. The correct way to do that is in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224

  • Ipod touch 1st gen MAJOR issues HELP!

My hubby dropped his 16gb ipod touch 1st gen on the floor. It landed face down. It was working fine until the battery ran out and since then it will not hold a charge. I reset it last night and it finally charged over night (plugged into the wall) it said it was fully charged this morning but after it was unplugged it was working fine except the internet would not work. It would not connect to our wireless internet. (I have an 8gig second gen that works dandy no issues so i know its not my internet.) He had his ipod on for 20 minutes it got broiling hot and the battery was back at being almost dead. We shut it off let it cool down and then we've had it plugged in all day ( it's plugged in my computer now) and just keeps saying its got 10 minutes remaining on the battery. I restored it twice through itunes and updated it and it still will not charge but will stay on if its plugged in the computer or the wall saying its charging... also the internet still will not work. it will for a few seconds pick up my wireless but with only one bar but will not let me try to connect to it. It tells me it can't connect. Then, the signal comepletely disappears again. It won't find any wireless at all. I even went upstairs and sat in front of the modem lol. I've tried everythihng known to man and am out of ideas. Is the thing screwed? Someone please help....

Sounds like something came loose or exposed. From what i read, it looks like your battery is losing it's charge quickly. My advice would be to take it in to a local apple store and see if they can fix it or run a diagnostic. Unfortunately, if i had to guess i'd say there's a hardware problem since your battery is dying so fast and is having charging problems. Good luck.

  • Trying to get my ipod touch (1st gen) to upgrade to ios 3.1.1

Trying to get my ipod touch to upgrade to ios 3.1.1.   I get an error message 8288

Hello, I hope by now you have resolved the upgrade issue, but if not, here is what I ended up having to do:
“SUCCESS!!! I took my iPod to a friend who is a computer programmer/genius. He turned off his wireless, hooked the ethernet cable directly into his computer, and the download went through without a hitch. YAY!”
Here is my original post explaining what I had already tried:
    “Hi all,
I got an iPod Touch 1st gen for my youngest son for Christmas as a starter. It has the 2.1.2 ios on it, but after I paid for the upgrade to 3.1.1, I keep getting an error message (8288) saying there was a problem with the network connection. I have called customer service, and they suggested I try on a different computer, and if that didn't work, try connecting to a different network, and then trying the update. None of this has worked. It seems that tech support is clueless with this issue.
I have installed and unistalled iTunes 10.5, 10.3, 10.4, and now I am back with 10.5. I have tried looking up the issue from several search engines but no one seems to have a universal solution and I have tried several.
I really want to have this thing updated for himw hwne he opens it, but I am starting to worry that my purchase was a bust. I know this is the oldest version, but I don't want to buy a newer, more expensive iPod and him still not be mature enough to really take care of it. As I said, this one is a starter.
    Can anyone help? Please?!
    Thank you!!!
P.S. We have a PC, with Windows XP Home.”
Now, there seem to be a lot of different ways to solve the 8288 error, none of which are universal. Best of luck getting yours upgraded!
    Tiffany
P.S. The post by Sparkhi is a link to his blog going into a long story about how he wanted Apple to pay him for “solving” the issue….the one that apparently has been solved by multiple solutions. I’m not trying to bash, it just bothers me that he put up this whole story and finally, at the very end of his blog post, posts his solution.

  • IPod Touch 1st gen inoperate

    Hi,
I find out my old iPod Touch 1st gen but it's not working anymore.
I tried to connect it to my mac with iTunes but it can't launch it too. Message error number 1600 or 1403 so i can't restore the iOS through iTunes. Furthermore, the iPod Touch display lots of lines and flash on the screen.
How can I restore the iOS ?

    Thanks Illaass !
I followed trouble shooting solution number 1604 and I finally successed to recognize by iTunes my iPod Touch and download the iOS.
For others, the method is the following:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for error 1604.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
The iOS is correctly downloaded on my mac and iTunes ask me to restore my iPod. I launched the restoration  and went through all the process (initializing, instalation, verification) but I always got the same message error number 6.
I checked the help page. Therefore I tryed the following solution but no result:
    - change USB port (I have no other USB device connected),
    - reload iTunes (I have the lastest version),
    - disabled iantivirus,
    - try to restore the iPod with no internet conection (totally impossible).
    What should I do ?
note: during the restoration process, the iPod screen showed a lot of flash and colored lines.

  • IPod Touch 1st Gen Not Charging/Being Reconized

As the title says, my iPod Touch (1st Gen) will be reconized bu any computer or charge all in itself. I tried plugging it into multiple computers, nothing. I tried plugging it into the wall adapter...still nothing. It doesnt not get the charging symbol when I plug it into either places. The is actually the second time it happend. The first, well my cord was so worn, I guessed it was the cord and replaced it, worked just fine. The replacement happend very recently, like maybe 1-2 months ago. So right now, I would guess it was the cord, but its brand new. I have tried toing both a soft and hard reset of the iPod, nothing worked. If anyone could please help me, it would be highly appreciated.
