Turned on iMac, I get white screen

Turning on my Mac and after the initial apple logo goes away, it looks like the screen start to change, and goes to another white screen. I can see my mouse arrow, but nothing else. What happened, and how can I fix it?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try a reset
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    and restore as necessary.

Intermittent or inconsistent situations as you describe are the most difficult to resolve.  First step you should do is be certain that you have your data backed up.  I suggest that you do this by creating a bootable clone using Carbon Copy Cloner.  The advantage to this is that not only is it a backup but can immediately be used to run your MBP in the event of an internal HHD failure.
The article that I gave you to start your search contains a link to this article:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353
Though lengthy, it can resolve most issues if you go through all of the sections.  If you cannot achieve success, then an Apple store genius bar is the last option.
    Ciao.

Try a Safe Mode boot ...
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.

I have an iPhone 3GS. It It shutdowns random, it fails to turn on, it displays a white screen with colors lines.

I have the 3GS and it recently started the RSD.  At first I thought it was just the batter not holding a charge and being lower than what the display showed.  However, even when fully charged the RSD's occur mostly when loading either Apps or web pages in Safari.
I have not experienced the white screen and colored line, yet apparently.  Is this the logic board like in the MacBook's?

  • 21" iMac getting white screen and does not boot up

    Hi All!
This is my first time to post here but have been using Mac OS since 2009.
I am having issues with my  Mid 2011 iMac 21". I keep  getting a white screen and it does not boot up.
I am a bit technical so I have done all the necessary steps as below:
    1. Powercycle the system (Shutdown, unplug for 10 seconds and replug) = No go
    2. Reset NVRAM several times = No go
    3. Went to Safe Boot = Vertical white stripes on blue screen appears
    4. Tried booting on Recovery Disk = Vertical white stripes on blue screen appears
I'm thinking my video card is faulty now.
Any help guys? I hope my hard drive is not fried
What's worse, my 3 year extended warranty just expired last June and it's only been 3 months

First i can't send it back becuase it didnt have a warranty i purchased it on ebay. second the guy didnt send the install disks with it as he promised i have tried to follow up with him with no luck so hes been reported to ebay. and due to current buisiness expenses cant afford the new software. is there anything else i can do to at least boot the thing so i can figure out whats wrong with it. and has anybody experienced this before and if so how was the issue resolved. soooo frustrated as buisiness is at a stand still till this machine works. p.s.it has osx leopard latest version.

  • IPhone 3G After turned on i get white screen

When I turn on my iPhone I get a white screen. The apple shows but when the lock screen should show that's when I get a white screen. I have tried the home power holding thing does not work. Please help

    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, restore the iPhone >  iTunes: Restoring iOS software

  • Restored in dfu mode to fix white screen, phone works fine until I turn off screen then get white screen. anyone know what else to do?

as long as I dont turn screen off everthing works just like it should for as long as I want UNTIL I turn the screen off then when I turn it back on it goes right back to white screen.

    Hello agardner37701,
I found some steps you can take when your iPhone is not recognized by iTunes when in Recovery Mode.  I recommend reviewing the steps in the section titled "If the device is not recognized while in Recovery Mode" under step 5 in the following article:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Imac 21.5 white screen on boot up

I have the A1311 2009 21.5" iMac. The computer was running fine. I changed startup disks to boot off of a friend's external USB backup to get some files off for them (I needed to export their address book and get other various files)
When I finished getting what I needed under system preferences I changed the boot up drive back to my imac's internal drive and clicked restart.
The computer restarted gave the startup chime and stayed at a blank white screen. No spinning sprocket.
I am using a usb keyboard and usb mouse.
The only boot keyboard command that works is command+option+p+r and when I do that I get the chime and a reboot.
I've tried resetting the SMC by unpluggin it.
I've tried inserting a disk warrior cd to boot off of it, but it doesn't boot. And holding the mouse button on startup does not eject the CD.
I've tried holding c when booting to boot of the CD drive.
I've tried holding option when starting. I've connected my own bootable USB backup and held "option" when starting.
I've tried holding shift when starting. I've tried command+r when starting.
Nothing happens. I always get the chime and then a white screen.
Looking online, it looked like several macbook air/pro owners with a similiar problem disconnected their HDD and then were able to boot off an external source. So I took off the glass and LCD and disconnected the 3 hdd connectors, put the screen on and tried booting again using all the steps above and every time always the same, a chime and then white screen.
I took all the ram out and when it was turned on got a low intermitent beep and black screen. Put the ram back in and get the startup chime and white screen.
I'm at a loss as to what else to try. I can't see how booting off my friend's external usb hdd would lead to this.
    Any suggestions.

I reopened the imac, removed the optical drive (hdd was already out). Restarted with my USB external HDD connected, nothing happened, white screen still. I then reconnected the friend's USB HDD also and restarted and got the screen to choose a startup disk.
Computer then boots fine from my external hdd. Turn it off, reinstall my HDD and optical drive.
Turn it on again and am greeting with the same blank white screen again.
I then remove the optical drive again and am able to boot from the internal drive. BUT when I go to system preferences to change startup disk, if I check the internal drive or the external USB drive and click reset I got the error "building boot caches on boot helper partition failed". I have no idea what is going on. I repair permissions several times.
I then restart the computer several times and it seems to restart consistently from the internal drive. I then put the optical drive back in and it now appears to be working.
The original external drive I booted from was a 10.5 macbook pro cloned drive. So I don't know if that somehow corrupted my 10.8 imac drive or some firmware that made it such that it wouldn't boot.
    What a hassle.
And for anyone who cares and has read this far, I am living in a remote town in Mongolia at the time and didn't have any suction cups to remove the front glass from the imac. I do have an iSesamo tool to open up ipod touches and such, and was able to use that to get the front glass off.
If anyone has an idea of what happened I'd be interested in hearing.

  • I get white screen with logo after update OS 10.6.6

Yesterday I download the update, get the message intall and turn off so I did it.
Today i turn on the imac and it wont start, i get the white screen with the logo. I´ve triied almost everything...
    Change disc permissions
    Veryfy disc
    Restart on safe mode
    Turn on and off
    Please help!

Try booting from your install disc again. Make sure that error was corrected.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your startup disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 15% free space.
