Turned power off by mistake - won't restart

I caught the rocker switch on the mains plug before my iMac had shut down properly. It won't restart and I've already tried the trick of holding in the power button for 10 secs with the cable removed...but no joy.
Thing is, I did this once before and it wouldn't restart. I unplugged everything and was going to take it to an Apple service centre - expecting that something had 'blown' (I'd already checked the plug and fuse). It had been left for a couple of days and I thought I would try it one more time....and miraculously it came back to life. It had been a hot day and the iMac had been on for hours when I caught the switch, so I assumed the combination of heat and sudden power drop had trigered some sort of protection system.
After reading lots of threads I've not come across anything that might explain this behaviour. I've unplugged the cable again for over an hour and tried to restart it. Although the mac is totally cool, it won't start up.
I will leave it overnight, but if I'm out of luck this time, what is the likely fault?

The PSU has blown. I will replace my surge protector but wonder if a UPS is required. I'm thinking I shouldn't need one because power outages very rarely happen...it's just my idiot self for turning off the wrong plug.

osx10.6 keeps freezing how can I fix without turning power off?  It has happened a dozen times in the last ten days -
    Force Quit will not respond
When the freeze occurs the cursor will move, but not activate any application
The only way to restore activity is to turn off MacBook with power button
I do not like doing this, and am happy that so far Time Machine has not stopped functioning when I turn power back on.

Yesterday my macbook pro freezed again, two times in 20 minutes!!!

Let the battery fully darain. After charging for an least an hour try a reset and restore. Use Recovery mode if necessary.
If not successful, then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

I have a 5 month old  iMac running Lion and W7 with the latest version of boot camp . It has been operating flawlessly until I went to reboot into Mac tonight. Screen went black, and system is unresponsive. I've tried force quitting and turning power off. Hard drive starts, there's a small amount of drive activity and that's it.

Hi Jane, your info may still be there, look in the Users folder at root of the drive, how many users are there there?
It sounds like this may have happened...
Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory, (it can happen spontaneously too)...

Since updating my iPad 2 to IOS6 and activating my icloud for backup, my iPad has permanently locked. Message on screen is "iPad Not Backed Up". I click ok but no response. Cannot turn power off and cannot restore via my pc itunes. What are my options?

Thanks to everyone who responded and related subject helped. Holding the home button and power button simultaneously for 10-15 seconds does unlock the screen. I can now use my ipad again. However, a futher problem has arisen since updating to IOS6 and activating icloud at same time, Although not sure if its related. The problem is that when connected to my PC the itunes message appears 'Cannot read ipad'. It instructs you to restore but keeps timing out after about 1 hour. This maybe internet issue but can't understand why itunes cannot read my ipad. May need to completely erase all content & reset. Or any other suggestions why this has happened?

Please try temporary connecting your printer to some other power socket, without using any power extention or hub.

  • Satellite L20: Can I disconnect devices like USB Mouse without turning power off?

    Hi, all.
I'm an owner of Satellite L20 notebook. I have always turned power of my computer off when i need to connect or disconnect any USB Device. Some devices have a special icon on the taskbar to disconnect them but some doesn't (USB FDD or flash disks). Can I disconnect and connect devices like USB Mouse or Scanner wihtout turning power off?

    Hi
Of course that you can do this. Because of that there is Safely remove Hardware option. All external devices connected on your unit should be listed there. If you want to remove some of them click on it and click on STOP button.
When the selected device disappears from the list you can remove it from the port. I have done this many times with different units and external devices ithout any problems.

I accidentally forgot my passcode and tried 6 attempts but all failed.I don't have iTunes.I turned power off.Now it is not responding.Any suggestions?

Without iTunes on a computer there is nothing that you can do. If you are locked out because you forgot the passcode your only solution is to restore the iPad using iTunes on a computer.
I don't know exactly want you mean by it is not responding - does that mean that it will not power up again?

  • TS1702 iPad won't power off - dialogue box won't disappear

Hi, there is a dialogue box saying 'Your rental movie has expired' and it's asking me to press ok.  I press ok but nothing happens.  Nothing else works because the dialogue box just stays there.  Troubleshooting recommends to power of the iPad, but it won't let me use the slide button to power off - because the dialogue box overrides it.  Any advice?  Thanks!

Have you tried a soft reset...hold both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears in the center of the screen and the unit restarts.

MX 870 Canon printing is not straight and keeps telling me to turn power off

    Hi arkansaspewman,
It sounds like you are getting a service error on the printer.  I recommend checking inside the printer for any obstructions, as well as trying to unplug it for about 5 minutes, then plug it back in.  If the issue persists, I would recommend using the Contact Us link to get in touch with our support staff who can provide any available service options.
