Turning a mac laptop into a wacom...

This looks very cool.  http://www.tenonedesign.com/inklet.php
For anyone with a touch sensitive Mac laptop, just adding inklet software and the pogo stylus can turn the laptop into a touch sensitive wacom... sort of.
It looks like there's a bit of limitation in the working area size, but I figure there must be a workaround with photoshop.
I wonder if anyone on this forum has tried this?
And if so, how does it compare to a regular wacom?
Thanks...

Hi - and welcome to the Mac Disussions.
Templeton has given you the answer (and you shd probably give him some points as 'answered' - it helps these forums work a little better).
OS X is pretty much BASED on Postcript - just like PDFs.
Any Mac program that can print can automagically produce a PDF (even the 'tricky' ones like spreadsheets, web browsers, Presentations etc...) It's literally 'built in' to the whole OS:
Just choose Print (say, right now) in the bottom left hand corner should be two buttons: PDF and 'Preview'.
Simply Choose 'PDF' - and you'll get a whole bunch of options, the very first of which is 'Save as PDF file'.
A wonderful thing isn't it ?
If you don't see that for some reason, get back to us here - you have another problem.
best wishes,
Wayne T

  • How to turn an old laptop into a jukebox

    hi all!
because this is my first post, i just want to say that i really like the arch community. didn't need to post anything until now, but since i switched to arch (2-3 years ago), this forum & wiki always helped me. so thanks!
ok - i want to turn an olld laptop into a jukebox for partys. it is an acer aspire 1692 (Pentium-M 740 1.73GHz, 512MB RAM, 80GB HDD, ATI Mobility Radeon X700 64MB). so what i want is nothing than a fast system, playing the music. the music player should have the following (very basic) features: shuffle, fading, queuing, music library and fastness. my current music library contains around 19000 songs (~100gb). i think i would like to use openbox. but i still can't find a music player. i really like mpd but there is no such feature like queuing (for example, having a playlist, and then adding a song as the next song to be played in the cue, and then continue with the playlist).
    any suggestions? comments?
    thanks!
    hooch

I would like to see you fit 100GB worth of music into an 80GB HDD ;P
Are you saying none of those https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … ions#Audio fits your needs?
I would pause mplayer playing the playlist and open another one to play just this track, then return to the first one and continue with the playlist :-) I don't think mplayer supports fast handling of music libraries of ~100GB-size though. How about http://www.clementine-player.org/ ?

  • How can I turn mac mini into wifi access point for iPhone?

    Hi,
I do not have a wifi router.
I want my iPhone to be able to use my broadband internet instead of the slow EDGE internet.
The simple solution would be to buy a wifi router whih would enable my iPhone to access the wifi home network.
*What if I could turn the mac mini into a wifi access point?* That would save me from the hassle of buying a wifi router.
Any idea how to do this??
    Message was edited by: d00by666

    I did this.
I think I am doing something wrong. I am doing something wrong in this setting *from ethernet to airport*.
    see attached screenshot.
To start Internet sharing on a computer using Mac OS X:
    1. Open System Preferences, click Sharing, and then click Internet.
    2. Select how you would like to share your Internet connection, and then click Start. You
can choose to share your Internet connection with AirPort-enabled computers,
computers with built-in Ethernet, or both.
    Note:
If your Internet connection and your local network use the same port (built-in
Ethernet, for example), contact your ISP before you turn on Internet sharing. In some
cases (if you use a cable modem, for example) you might unintentionally affect the
network settings of other ISP customers, and your ISP might terminate your service to
prevent you from disrupting its network.
    3. If you want to share your Internet connection with computers using AirPort, click
AirPort Options to give your network a name and password.

  • Converting a laptop into a MAME cabinet: Looking for optimisation.

    Hello everyone!
I recently turned an old laptop into a MAME arcade cabinet.
So far I only have the laptop working with MAME able to play games. I will build the cabinet from scratch once I have fully optimised the laptop.
Let me explain all of this in details.
First of all, I got motivated with this video of someone making a MAME arcade cabinet out of an old computer and something that looks like an empty Neo-Geo arcade cabinet.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sd9j6nGUCvU
While the idea seems really nice, using FreeDOS (or any DOS operating system) really bothers me.
Since, in the video, DOS is used to boot really fast and have nearly nothing between MAME and the operating system, there's no reason not to use GNU/Linux to achieve the same goal.

Greetings from a Photoshop Newbie. I need a computer, preferably a Mac laptop, with some serious processing power. I take photos with a Pentax 645Z; files are 50MB raw. I upload from Adobe Bridge and manipulate the photo, sometimes turning them into files in excess of 250MB. I cannot resize as the large files are needed for enlargements. Have all sorts of problems trying to manipulate, add effects and saving most large files. I need some serious processing power. Can anyone suggest what Mac i should purchase? I thank you in advance for your help :-)

It sounds as if you're having some system-related problems now, unrelated to processing power as such. In particular, a buggy video driver can cause everything to slow to a crawl.
Medium format files are big, true, but not so big as to cause significant slowdowns on a normally functioning and reasonably current computer. A laptop will always be slower than a well-equipped desktop system, though. Mac vs PC plays no part in this, performance is unrelated to platform.
Bottlenecks are different in ACR and Photoshop, so that should give you a clue. ACR is computing-intensive and mostly limited by CPU speed. Photoshop, however, is mostly bandwidth-intensive and mainly limited by memory and disk throughput. It's also sensitive to GPU issues.

    Hello All,
I have a 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011. The past few weeks, it has been getting increasingly difficult to get on my computer. It takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get to the dark gray log-in screen. Even when I finally get logged in to start working, thinking it would be okay now, it shuts down randomly.
I've ruled out the possibility of a software problem because I've just done a clean re-install of Mac OS X Mavericks on my computer just yesterday.
I did upgrade the RAM recently, about a month and a half ago, from 4GB to 16GB, I went to the apple store four days after that upgrade to have them do a hardware test, and clean the inside of my laptop, which helped with previous heat issues. When they did the hardware test, the hardware was all registered as fine from their system.
I've tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, and doing the internet recovery hardware test, but to no avail. I thought I could at least find out what parts needed to be replaced from the hardware test but it seems that when the hardware test is almost finished, the computer just shuts down, So I am unable to see the results.
My computer is also having battery issues, under battery condition, it says "replace now," parts have been ordered, waiting for arrival. But if the battery health is low, it should still boot up fine, it would just hold a significantly less charge.
Could this be a hard drive issue?
Has anyone had similar symptoms and how was it resolved?
Does anyone know what I can do to alleviate this issue?
I haven't had time to take it to Apple because I'm currently taking a 21 credit semester academically. I'm an art and design student so my computer is basically the bane of my existence. Help! Any constructive advice is welcomed!
Thank you so much for your input!

  • I am trying to transfer my photos from old mac to new mac.  I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto.  It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!  What happened?

And how do I turn off FACES?

I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto.  It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!
According to you youo did not do what I instructed - you said you imported the old library into th enew library which can easily take a 2000 photo library and turn it into 12,000 including two ro three versions of each photo pus all the face thumbnails
The correct procedure has NO importing involved
drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac
    That is it

  • How can I turn my Mac using iTunes into an alarm clock?

Here's my question: How can I turn my Mac, using iTunes, into an alarm clock?
I want to be able to put my Mac to sleep but have it set up so that when it wakes up at the predetermined time iTunes will open and start playing the music I've selected....
    A "musical alarm clock"...
A friend suggested using the Energy Saver option in Sys. Preferences to wake the computer at the right time. He said that then I could use iCal to start iTunes. I would then have to use an Apple Script to get iTunes to play the song I want.
But is there a SIMPLER way to do this? Are there any programs out there that do this already??
    Thanks for any help....

I recently got a copy of AlarmClock Pro from MacWorld UK. It is shareware, I think it is (USD?)19. I haven't had a chance to try it out much, but it does look quite good. I have an older version. The latest version looks even better.
I'm sure there's plenty of freeware apps out there. You might also want to try looking here for an applescript here Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes

I had all photos on a Windows desktop.  Got a mac laptop, installed LR5, and put all images from Windows onto an external hard drive.  When I go to import them into LR on the mac, they are all locked.  Help, please!

"I plugged the external into the Mac and moved a folder of images onto the desktop.  It looks like it went from read only to not locked.  Is this possible?"
Yes, that's exactly what happened. If you buy another drive, you could copy from your existing drive to the new and your files will be read/write. The new drive will have to be formatted as an HFS drive (that's the Mac's format). If you need to format it, you use Disk Utility which is in the Utilities folder on your Mac. Be careful with that -- it wipes out whatever is currently on the drive. Make sure you format the right drive.
I keep all my images on an external drive, too. In fact, I have two matching drives and sync them so I always have a backup.

  • Plugging my guitar into my interface, i have huge latency problem en gb 08, mac laptop os5.8

please help, when I plug my guitar directly into my  tascam us 144 interface the latency problem makes it  almost impossible to record a decent track. I am using  GB 08 on a mac laptop with  OS 5.8

You can, with the right sort of connector, physically plug a lead from your guitar directly into the MacBook. The problem, as I understand it, is that the signal produced by your guitar (Hi-Z) is not what your MacBook's input jack is designed for (line level). You need something like a direct box or an effects unit that will boost the guitar signal to line level (depending on the make/model, even some stompboxes may do this) or a cheapo audio interface that provides at least a Hi-Z input for your guitar and a line-level output from which to run a cable to your MacBook's line-level input; you can also plug your guitar into something like the M-Audio Jamlab which goes into your MacBook via USB.
    Cheers,
    Carl

  • Is there a way for mac to turn a voice file into text?

is there a way for mac to turn a voice file into text?

Mt Lion has dictation. I've had some luck using that and my iPhone voice memo program transcribing. It works best when the memo's are a minute or less and obviously there's editing to do afterwards.

  • Turning Mac Mini into an office server

My question - do I simply use iTunes sharing? Or can I point my MacBook to the new shared library? Which is preferred.
iTunes sharing is one approach.  iTunes will have to be running
at all times on the "server" and it will allow you to selectively maintain
local media storage on various devices.  As a shared library, the
one issue with that is that only one device can access it at a time.
The configuration that I use, is I have a pair of two 2 TB drives
connected to my Airport Extreme base station.  Each contains my
complete iTunes folder (one is backup).  All my Macs open that library
when openning iTunes.  As I said, downside is I can't connect with two
different devices, but in my case that is not an issue.
When I want media for the road on my MBP, I have a smaller iTunes folder
on that that I copy the desired files to.  With that guy, I just hold down the
option key when openning iTunes and select the desired library.
Also, do I keep my iphone/ipad apps on my MacBook for syncing, or should they live on the MacMini? Never done this before so any advice helpful.
You should use only one computer for syncing, as the chosen computer
will have the back up files for the device (contacts, messages, etc.).
Using iTunes sharing, the apps and such will be on the computer
used for syncing.  In the scenario I use, they are stored on my network
drives and the backup is stored on my "syncing" computer.
