Turning Airplane Mode "off" automatically turns on Wi-Fi

If you switch airplane mode "on," and you have your wi-fi set to "off," when you turn airplane mode back "off," wi-fi automatically turns on.
Has anyone else noticed this?

My phone was doing the same thing. Doing the hard reset worked fine and fixed the problem.
Thanks

  • I have an iPhone 4S with Sprint, I had to replace my last phone after the newest update killed my wifi button. Now my new phone won't get 3G at all. I have tried turning my phone off/on, resetting my networks, and turning airplane mode off and on.

I have an iPhone 4S with sprint. I had to replace my phone after the new update killed my wifi button and wouldn't let me turn my phone off. Since I've had my new phone, I haven't been getting 3G. I have tried resetting my networks, Turing airplane mode off/on and restarting my phone. Nothing seems to work. Any info on what I should do next would be great.

If you have set this phone up, then there would not necessarily be a solution here until you have been verify with the provider that everything is provisioned correctly on their end. Since the 3G comes from your cellular provider, if the settings are correct on the phone, then you should work with the carrier next.

  • Turn airplane mode off remotely

I left my iPhone on a plane.  Its chraged and I want to use find my iPhone.  Does anyone know how to turn off airplane mode remotely?

Cannot possibly be done, no way, no how.  In order to do any sort of remote cammand or control of any device, that device has to have a live data connection to send and receive information.  In airplane mode, all the radios are turned off, and the device is completely unable to send or receive any kind of data.  Its literally like trying to call someone on a landline when they have their home phone unplugged.
Call the airport or airline and see if it was put in the lost and found.

  • HT5012 After a flight with airplane mode on, my attempts to get cellular data came up with a No SIM.   It says this in upper left and I am unable to turn on cellular.  I've tried turning airplane mode off and on and off but nothing changes.  Any help out

My iPad2 with cellular is saying No SIM in top left.  I am unable to turn cellular on after a recent flight and having been in airplane mode.  Any helpful suggestions?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

  • What happens if I turn off airplane mode while I am in a foreign country?

What happens if I turn off airplane mode briefly while in a foreign country? I need to delete video voice mails to get that red dot off and hopefully get my FaceTime to work again.

To delete visual voicemails requires data or internet access via a carrier's cellular network. Visual voicemail access with the iPhone is not done via wi-fi. It is done via the cellular data or internet network only.
Turning Airplane mode off will not turn wi-fi off.

  • Why has automatic Airplane mode disappeared?

When I plug my iPhone into my music dock at night to charge my phone I used to get a prompt asking me to switch to Airlane mode which would stop any interference from the phone. The great thing about this feature was that in the morning after taking my iPhone off the dock Airplane mode would automatically turn off. Such a great price of development seamlessly making my life easier.
When I updated to ios 4 I was shocked to notice that this functionality was gone, to be replaced with a dismiss notification instead. So now when I plug my iPhone into my dock I have to hit the dismiss notification, then go to settings, then manually turn on Airplane mode and the same in the morning to turn it off again. Why. I can't understand why Apple would change such a useful piece of functionality in such a fundamental way. Would love to know why.

Doubtful if Apple will answer why - not here anyway. The only thing you will get here will be an educated or non-educated guess or speculation as to why.

  • Problem in airplane mode

I am facing a problem in my laptop. The airplane mode is automatically getting Off /on , because of this problem I am unable to connect with my WiFi.

    Hi ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP OMEN 15-5017tx Notebook and issues with the Airplane mode going off and on. Here is a link that show you how to turn off and on the Airplane mode. Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that might need updating. Updates that have not gone through could cause this issue. Try opening Device Manager by pressing the Windows key + X, and then clicking Device Manager. In Device Manager, locate the network adapter, and then double-click the Wireless adapter. Click the Driver tab, and update the Driver. Restart the Notebook. I hope this helps. Thanks.

  • How to use iPhone 4S in Europe as an iPod... without Airplane Mode?

So this is actually for a friend who has an iPhone 4S and is going to Amsterdam this summer.  She wants to bring her iPhone to use it for reading preloaded eBooks and listen to her music.  Now she is TERRIFIED of incurring international data charges.  She wants a foolproof method to disable it's service without using Airplane Mode.  She is afraid she will be out drinking one night and accidentally turn Airplane Mode off or restart her phone and it's turned off as it powers up and as her apps update she goes bankrupt.  She also still wants to be able to use WiFi when she is out there.
Now I was thinking she could replace her activated SIM card with an unactivated one from AT&T (her carrier).  I am just concerned about a couple things.
First since the iPhone is activated will it freak out on her when she inserts this unactivated SIM card.
Second will she have to restore it before inserting the SIM card?
Third will she be able to connect it to iTunes to add music or perform a restore if something should happen to it out there?
Or if the SIM card trick is a no-go, what other ways are there to foolproof deactivate her phone?
Any help or ideas you could give me to pass along to her would be great.  She was actually on her way to buy a new ipod and an ereader when she told me and I stopped her in her tracks.  I had a European buddy come HERE and buy an unactivated iPhone and wanted to use it as an iPod and we did this SIM card trick but I don't know if it translates to Activated to Unactivated.

Just take out the sim card. If the iPhone is unlocked, she won't have to worry about charges.

  • Hi um i have the ipod 5 and my computer seems to be fine with the wifi but when i pressed wifi and my wifi does not pop up it i put it on airplane mode reset the  networks erased my safari history . and it still has not read my wireless internet ?

hi um i have the ipod 5 and my computer seems to be fine with the wifi but when i pressed wifi and my wifi does not pop up it i put it on airplane mode reset the  networks erased my safari history . and it still has not read my wireless internet ?

    If not:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Then:
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • To avoid roaming charges when traveling internationally, do i put my iphone on airplane mode only or do i also need to turn off data and voice roaming

I have an iphone 4 with sprint which can't take a sim card.  To avoid roaming charges while traveling internationally, do i put my phone on airplane mode.
I read you need to turn off cellular and voice data roaming as well but when I turn on airplane mode, it seems like roaming is automatically turned off.
    Is this true?

Turning on Airplane Mode will prevent the phone from getting roaming charges as it cant connect to a cell tower.
P.S you can have WiFi on and still be in Airplan Mode. Just turn Airplane Mode on first, then turn the WiFi on

  • How does the gps on my iPhone 4S know we're I am if I have no service, it's in airplane mode, and wifi is turned off ?

Let me just say that I didn't get the answer I wanted from contacting apple care and the customer service rep was very rude and gave me what seemed like a short answer just to get me off the line. So here I am hoping that someone can give me a straight answer.
I have an iPhone 4S and I have not had cellular service associated with it for over a year now. It's basically acting as an iPod touch right now.
Yesterday I took a car trip to Boston with my wife and I was playing around with google maps. I had loaded our destination prior to leaving our home so the route information was still loaded. I have my 4s on airplane mode all the time so constantly searching for a signal wouldn't drain my battery. I turn wifi off when I'm not in a hotspot for the same reason as well. So as I was looking at our route info I noticed that the little node that indicates your position was moving along with our corresponding location almost as accurate as any other gps. This concerns me because
1- I have no service on this phone
    2- airplane mode is enabled
    3- wifi is disabled
Now the even weirder thing is that my son has a nexus tablet. Just strictly wifi. We pulled into a rest stop and conveniently it had free wifi. So I loaded our route info onto his Google device. When we got back on the road I turned wifi off on his tablet and SHOCKER the node was moving along with our position.
I want to know why my iPhone 4S running on iOS 7.0.4 is receiving gps data when all of the supporting features are turned off. As an added concern I would like to know why my sons wifi-only tablet is receiving gps data as well.
What is apple doing with its devices or what is google doing to their devices and/or application software.
Thank you to whoever helps me out with this.

Because GPS has nothing to do with WiFi, cellular signals, or data of any sort. GPS is implemented by signals sent by satellites that are received by GPS receivers. The receivers process the information from the GPS satellites and calculate your location. GPS never sends data anywhere; GPS functionality is receive only.
If you have WiFi or cellular data turned on this can improve the accuracy of GPS, because the GPS receiver can then use the known location of cell towers and WiFi networks to refine the GPS location. GPS by itself has an accuracy of 10 meters, or about 34 feet. Using the additional information from WiFi and cellular data this can be brought down to 3 meters (10 feet). This mode is called Augmented GPS, or A-GPS.

  • TS3992 Altho' my 4S iPhone is connected to Wi-fi & I have a correct Apple/icloud ID and password, I keep getting the message "icloud backup Failed. Turn off airplane mode, or use Wi-Fi to enable iCloud backup." Should I delete my account, setting up a new

I cannot activate my iCloud backup of my 4S iPhone, even though I have definitely deactivated Airplane mode, and am connected to Wi-Fi.  I also have a correct Apple/iCloud ID and password.
Should I delete my iCloud account and set up a new one??
Please give me some assistance with this problem!
    Sincerely, Brianrit

To unfreeze it, reset it by holding the power and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release.
To troubleshoot your problem with backing up to iCloud, this may be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your iPad that is preventing the backup from succeeding.  To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last iCloud backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, swipe across your backup and tap Delete, then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on and try backing up again.
If it still won't back up, you may have an app that is preventing the backup from succeeding.  To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is preventing the backup and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails.  Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.

  • My iPhone 3gs backed up to the iCloud just fine, but my new iPhone 5 gives me an error and says to turn off airplane mode or use wi-fi.  It is connected to my wi-fi and airplane mode is off.  It can see the internet just fine.  What gives?

I backed up my iPhone 3GS to iCloud.  Activated my iPhone 5 and restored it from iCloud.  But iPhone 5 will not backup to iCloud, only to my MacBook.  When I try to turn it on on the phone it gives me an error that I must turn on Wi-Fi or turn off Airplane mode.  Wi-Fi is on an the phone is talking to the internet just fine and airplane mode is off, but I still get the error. Is this a known problem?

You mean take the cover off of the iPhone, to look inside?  I'd recommend against it.  Even with warranty expired, you might qualify for an out-of-warranty service, which for 3GS is $149.
Other than that, any repair/service options are going to cost money.  You might want to see if a wireless carrier will let you get a new contract & phone.
Out of curiousity, you're just using at as, basically, an iPod Touch, if there's no cell provider?  Did I understand that correctly?
