Turning down/up input level from inside logic......

Hi.
Some levels that i being in to logic from various sources are sometimes way too loud or too quiet.
Is there anyway to turn this input level up or down from inside logic.
I ask this because i am turning the level up on my mixing desk so loud that it is dominant over other sounds but the level in logic is good....
Is there anyway around this?
Thanks, Ben

Hi.
The outputs that are very low are the 8 direct outs from my desk.
This means if i want the level to be descent then i have to turn up the desk very loud which is no good as this channels volume will be dominant over every other sound running through the desk.
I have a mackie 1604vlz pro.... Im not sure how to check what level my direct outs are outputting at. If there was anyway i could turn them up it would be great.
Please let me know if you have any advice?
Thanks, Ben

  • Stop the built-in mic's input level from decreasing during videochat?

No matter how many times my girlfriend sets her Late 2008 15" MBP's built-in mic's input level to max, the input level always decreases on its own during our videochat sessions.
Since the level decreases more when she watches loud videos during our videochat sessions, I'm thinking the input level is auto-adjusting itself to the increase in noise level or something.
I've googled and search the discussion forums to no avail.
If anyone knows how to stop this auto-adjusting thing from happening, I'm all ears.

    Hi,
I have seen a couple of threads on this now.
The iChat 4 "Fix" does not seem to work.
Deleting the other .plist to do with Audio in that Audio folder in Snow Leopard also doe not help.
I have only seen it posted about internal mic on iMacs and laptops.
However I do not suffer from it myself.
I have tried changing an Audio setting and comparing the Date Modified column items to see if anything gets changed.
The SystemPreferences.plist in my Home Folder list that I opened the Sound preferences but not the settings.
None of the Audio .plists are showing any change. (in Hard Drive/Library/Preferences)
At the moment I am mystified as to where any setting is stored.

  • Calling SoundTrack sample editor from inside Logic

Does anyone ever tried to tweak Logic to use SoundTrack as the default sample editor?

Thanx a lot, Fred! Once you know where to look, it's obvious - but I couldn't find nothing in the manual. Yet, the key-command doesn't have a dot: I reckon that function must be available in some menu... But which?
Although the SoundTrack manual has a dedicated chapter on using Soundtrack pro with Apple professional applications, Logic isn't even mentioned... Strange!
Thanks, anyway: it's so cool to be able to jump directly into SoundTrack.

  • PROBLEMS WITH INPUT (M-AUDIO AND LOGIC)

I cant seem to get an answer for this question?I have a powermac G5 2.3Ghz,im using an m-audio firewire 410,with logic pro 7.My previous system was a powerbook G4 older model 667Mgz,I was using logic 4.8.1 on os9 with the 410,and i didnt have this problem at all.My issue is no matter what i plug in to the 410's input my signal starts to clip even when the input knob is very low.I have tried bass, guitar, vocals etc.I cant figure it out.My 410 controls my signal before it get's to the digital domain,so i really dont know what to do,because if my signal is this hot before it gets to the G5,what can i do?

I plugged a normal electric guitar in the front panel of the 410,which is where i always plug my guitars in.If i turn down the input knob it doesn't clip or distort. But i have to turn the knob down almost all the way, same thing with my bass and both instruments dont have active electronics. The other thing i do is apply the pad button, then i could turn the knob up to atleast 10:00.Someone told me that the preamp's dont start to kick in,untill you have the input knob at around 2:00.Why didn't i have this issue with my older powerbook G4?I also updated the drivers on the 410,to the latest one.Funny, now when i try to hook up the 410 to my powerbook G4,it makes all these strange sounds, like the music is going through a crazy effects processor?Do you think updating the drivers did something?I didn't change anything on my old powerbook G4 at all,but like i said as soon as i hook up the 410,the exact same way i originally did,it plays music back in a strange way, almost like it is going through a filter. But when i hook it up to the G5,it goes back to normal?Im confused, any ideas?

  • Input level meter in Audition CS5.5

I can't find an input level meter in audition CS5.5. I have to go my windows 7 control panel find me device and set the levels. So, to set levels I have to have two windows open, one control panel audio adjustment window and one soundbooth window where I actually record and watch meter, then I erase and record for real.
I must be overlooking something -- every other audio program I have ever used lets you set input levels while watching the meter. I've been through the help, and Googled it and I can't figure it out. In Audition, how do I set input levels from within Audition CS5.5 (not in windows 7 control panel)?
    Thanks!

    Short answer, no!
Audition merely records EXACTLY what the input device is sending to it.  In normal useage the "level" of the signal to be recorded would be set externally, e.g. by use of an audio mixer or a "gain" control on the input device.  I assume you are recording by using a line or mic plugged straight to your computer?  In which case, the Windows Audio Control Panel is the only way to set levels.

  • Help : input level too low in Logic from studioKonnekt 48

I tried to record and use some voice microphone and some guitars (telecatser, some preamplified acoustic flattop, some archtops with humbucker or P90...)with Logic and SK 48 TC near.
If the voice setting with the gain trim at 12 were OK or even tooo loud, I NEVER succeeded to raise a level higher (lower..) than - 30 Db and this with the gain trip at the maximum and the main output at the maximum level...This dosen't allow me to work properly. I've tried different entries (1 to 4) than the line inputs and so on..
TC wrote me that they have -62 db in preamp but I could not succeed to raise a workable level.
Situation is quite different when I use a guitar pream (Radial PZ-Pre) or a Para acoustic DI from LR bagss.
Today, I've tried with a bass direct into SK 48, trough the preamp ...but the signal in Logic stayed absolutely loww while the screen indicator of the SK48 hardware showed me enough gain (orange to red)
I a not expert in both audioinyterfaces and Logic. I do not find in Logic how to increase the input gain from the audio interface...
Any help would be more than appreciated...since I have spent days and days to undertsnad and try...and finally I did not record anything since I have this new gears..So, I feel disapointed..
    Ciao
    Chris

+"I do not find in Logic how to increase the input gain from the audio interface..."+
You don't (apart from the level fader of the Record Track, of course).
You can adjust input levels in +Audio MIDI Setup,+ but when I suggested checking there you replied: +"Thanks a lot, but everything is weel set up ???"+
So you need to look at the software that controls your interface.

  • Analog Levels vs SPDIF Levels Input and Output in Logic Pro

    Hello,
I ran a test last night for recording input and output levels from my Yamaha Motif XS8 through an Apogee Ensemble to compare Analog to SPDIF
I connected two TRS cables from the L and R outputs on the Motif XS into the Analog Inputs on the Apogee and also have the SPDIF connection from the Motif to the Apogee.
I put the master fader all the way up on the XS for the volume for analog.
The ensemble in Maestro has a +4 and -10 reference notional level option for analog inputs. i had it at +4 but changed to -10 and the analog got louder (i figured it would get louder for +10, confusing).
anyways, why is it that I can record louder levels for analog than the digital transfer?
I tracked both options at the same time then recorded vocals over it. the digital sound is too low. what's up with that?
and when I tried to bounce the recording to listen to it in ITunes, the volume levels were way lower than my cd playing through iTunes. Please enligthen me on these?
I use to record in a Roland 2480, and had similar results with loudness, but got a little louder through mastering but still....pro cds are way louder and still clear.

I think there is much confusion here!
In summary, you wont be able to control the recording level of S/PDIF.
The reason is that you don't want to!
You need to think of the SPDIF connection as being more like a file transfer method. You are copying the digital data at an output to your harddrive in effect. If I send you an MP3 via email you'd never imagine that your email software is capable of changing the gain of the MP3 I send you. This might sound daft but its a useful analogy. If you need to increase the "volume" of that MP3 then you'd need to ask the sender. Its the same with your set-up.
There could well be somewhere on your synth that adjusts the instruments level, other than the master (analogue) output control. For example, make sure the midi volume of the intrument being played is set to full - ie midi vol 128. Perhaps there is somesort of virtual mixer onboard to control all the muti-timbral parts so make sure your part has its virtual fader turned up.
This is what (basically) is going on in the chain...
Your synth creates sound in its "digital brain". This sound is sent to an "output stage" which will distribute the sound to various outputs. In the case of the S/PDIF it will just send the raw digital data untouched. For the analogue side the digital signal (same as the one sent to S/PDIF) will be converted to analogue and then sent to a amplifier to get it to an appropriate "line level". This final level could well be controlled by an anogue volume control which could be adding more gain (than you think) too.
When things go to your sound card/ daw...
The purpose of a analogue gain control is to set the i/p signal so that it suitably loud to beat any noise that exists in your input circuits - so that a good signal to noise ratio is achieved. Analogue signals need to work in the right loudness zone (so to speak) as the analogue electronics will be designed to handle signal levels of a particular range. the gain control is there to make sure the signal is in that range.
Digital signals are far more predictable though and there is no advantage to your recordings if the incoming digital signal gets an increase of level at the input stage. All you are doing here is effectively adding a few zeros to the binary digital data!
Lets face it the point of recording is to get a copy of the original sound, that is as similar to the original as possible. With S/PDIF you get a perfect copy of what's coming out of your synth - so job's a good un!
If, when you come to mix in logic, you find the level of the digital recording is indeed too low for mixing/mastering purposes then just boost it in logic via a fader or via the gain plugin.
Those referrence values of -10dBV and +4dBu refer to analogue voltage levels only. they have nothing to do with the digital domain. The -10/+4 switch will be only relevant to analogue inputs and outputs. Using an analogue VU meter you should find that a sine wave that peaks at 0dBVU (totally different to 0dBFS BTW) is the equivant of a digital sine wave peaking at -18dBFS.
The analogue headroom (how loud you can go before things distort) depends on the analogue electronics and varies with different design. Analogue stuff, like mixers) often has headroom of 24dB or more. So that digital stuff can interface with analogue properly we allow for that analogue headroom to be around 18dB (usually enough in practise!)... hence -18dBFS(digital)=0dBVU(analogue).
To make your digital and analogue input signals sound similar in level you will probably have to reduce the gain of the analogue input. If you set the incoming analogue signal to peak around -14dB (or less!) or so you will probably find things more equal. If you are working in 24 bit your analogue levels can be seemingly very low before sound quality is affected. Its quite safe to record at -20 or even -30dB as shown on logic's meters for eg.
I hope all this waffle helps LOL!

  • Get input sound level from mic

I'm trying to find out how ( if possible ) to get the input sound level from the microphone.
Example : if someone screams into the mic it would return that it is loud or on a scale of 1 to 10 it would be a 10; and the opposite if someone was whispering.
    Any help would be great!
    -Rob

Digital audio is stored as a series of samples, where each sample is the amplitude of the sound wave being recorded. The volume of the sound is the same as the amplitude of the sound, therefore, each individual sample is simply encoded as the volume of the sound.
So you break the mic input down into a list of samples (based on the sample size / number of channels) and keep a running average to determine the sound level.
