Turning G3 AIO into a DVD player

I recently acquired a G3 AIO and wondered about the possibility of turning it into a DVD player/jukebox for the living room. The idea is to salvage the unit and use it for something other than sitting in the basement. Pop in a big hard drive and a DVP player and there you go. However, my research seems to indicate that the stock video cards in the AIO will not handle DVD decoding. I have seen reference to some hack that allows you to install a new video card and hook it up to the internal monitor, however I haven't been able to find any details on how exactly to do it? Does anyone know anything about this?

another thing , if you can find a original ATI Radeon 32mb Mac Edition pci card get that over the slower ATI Radeon 7000 32mb Mac edition pci. and another thing you can do that will really help out the system if it dont already have a CPU upgrade on it is to buy a G3 450mhz cpu from a B&W i got mine about 6 months ago for $47 with shipping from ebay. i didn't know about the original ATI Radeon Mac Edition till i bought the Radeon 7000. but i can still play dvd's at full speed. the original radeon will be even better at it. another thing is to put memory in it if not its going to be crash ahollic, something like a 256mb ram upgrade would be enough if it don't have allot already. the spacs of my AIO are in my sig below.
the 256mb sticksare weird in these beige G3's if you get the wrong ones it will only see 128mb of the 256mb on the stick or just not work at all, the 256mb stick i bought is from this page
http://www.datamem.com/memoryselect_frame.asp_Q_C_E_1321-G3BW450
other than that the Beige G3 will play dvd's with a Radeon Mac Edition PCI, or Radeon 7000 Mac Edition PCI with that patch on that site. with or without the cpu upgrade and memory but it will be painfully slow some times with out the cpu upgrade

  • How can I turn captured video into a DVD

I am a premiere newbie. Can anyone tell me the basic steps to take captured video (already can do..) and turn it into a DVD which can be read on a regular TV-DVD player.? Even a few basic starter steps to send me down the right road would be helpful and VERY appreciated. I can capture to Premiere (Pro CS4), but then what? Thank you!!

OK, you've got your material Captured from your camera. It should appear in your Project Panel. At this point, your Timeline will be empty. This is where the editing comes in. I'll keep it simple, as there are a couple of ways to do this.
1.) from the Project Panel, drag each Video Clip to the Timeline's Video Track 1. The accompanying Audio wll come in with it, and should go to Audio Track 1, below that little "beltline," that separates your Video (above) and Audio (below).
2.) you can alter the Duration of your Clip by click-dragging on the Head, to shorten it there, or from the Tail, to shorten it there. If you have material that you wish to remove from anywhere but the Head or Tail, look in the Toolbox, usually to the lower-right, but it can be moved. There is a Razor icon. Place the CTI (Current Time Indicator - that little triangle with a red line, that moves when you hit the Spacebar) where you wish to Cut with the Razor. Click with the Razor selected and both Video and Audio will be sliced. Move to where you wish this extra footage to end, and do the same thing. Rt-click on this new "Clip" and Choose Ripple Delete. This will remove that segment and close up the other parts of the Clip. Repeat for all of the rest of your media Assets.
3.) add any Transitions, music, etc.
4.) when done, you will Export this to Adobe Encore for DVD authoring. There are several ways to do this, but Adobe Dynamic Link is probably the easiest way.
5.) in Encore (if you use DL all selected Timelines will come into that program w/ Audio and Video), you create your navigation with Menus (Encore has a full Library of these).
    6.) Check Project
7.) when done, chose File>Burn to DVD.
Note: use good media, like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden and burn at the slowest possible speed.
    Done and good luck,
    Hunt
PS remember that there are many ways to do the steps above. The manual and the Help files will go into a lot more detail, and you might find that you like another way better. Read, and then experiment.

  • DVD doesn't play from the beginning when inserted a second time into a dvd player

DVD burnt in DVD studio pro, when ejected and inserted again into dvd player, the dvd plays from where it stopped the last tome it was ejected. It doesn't rewind and play from the beginning.
Is the problem in the burning settings in DVD studio pro? any help is really appreciated!

My DVD Player setting was Last option played, I changed it now to "beginning". It now starts from the beginning when I insert it again, thanks.
Another issue is that my First play in the DVD is a Track, then comes a Menu. When I leave to the Menu while the Track didnt finish, and then click the dvdmenu on my remote control, the Track resumes from where I exited to the menu last.
Is that something i can control ? To make that intro track start from the beginning?
Thank you, I appreciate the help!

  • How do I burn my camera videos using iDvd without using a theme? I just want it to start playing all my clips once I insert into a DVD player

    Hello,
I have done this before in the past and now I have forgotten how to do it! I would like to simply put all my camera videos from the past year onto a DVD but do not want to have the iDVD theme menus and chapters. In the past, I was somehow able to upload and burn these videos using iDVD without the themes. Can someone help? Thank you so much!

    Hi
    No Menu DVD
    from. Mishmunken
How to create a DVD in iDVD6 without menu (there are several options)
    1. Easy. Drop your iMovie in the auto-play box in iDVD's Map View, then set your auto-play item (your movie) to loop continuously.
Disadvantage. The DVD plays until you hit stop on the remote
    2. Still easy. If you don't want your (auto-play) movie to loop, you can create a black theme by replacing the background of a static theme with a black background and no content in the drop-zone (text needs to be black as well).
Disadvantage. The menu is still there and will play after the movie. You don't see it, but your disc keeps spinning in the player.
    3. Still quite easy but takes more time. Export the iMovie to DV tape, and then re-import using One-Step DVD.
Disadvantage. One-Step DVD creation has been known to be not 100% reliable.
    4. (My preferred method) Easy enough but needs 3rd party software. Toast lets you burn your iMovie to DVD without menu - just drag the iMovie project to the Toast Window and click burn.
Disadvantage. you'll need to spend some extra $$ for the software. In Toast, you just drop the iMovie project on the Window and click Burn.
    5. The "hard way". Post-production with myDVDedit (free-ware)
    Tools necessary. myDVDedit ( www.mydvdedit.com )
    • create a disc image of your iDVD project, then double-click to mount it.
    • Extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to a location of your choice. select the VIDEO_TS folder and hit Cmd + I to open the Inspector window
    • Set permissions to "read & write" and include all enclosed items; Ignore the warning.
    • Open the VIDEO_TS folder with myDVDedit. You'll find all items enclosed in your DVD in the left hand panel.
    • Select the menu (usually named VTS Menu) and delete it
    • Choose from the menu File > Test with DVD Player to see if your DVD behaves as planned. If it works save and close myDVDedit.
    • Before burning the folders to Video DVD, set permissions back to "read only", then create a disc image burnable with Disc Utility from a VIDEO_TS folder using Laine D. Lee's DVD Imager.

  • Ipod too slow when reading video files via DVD player with USB port.

Hi all, this is my first message in this forum.
I've got a DVD player that has a USB port and reads all types of disks. When I use my IPOD 80 GB the files I read are somehow frozen and don't run properly (lack of sync between audio and video, etc). I've got version 1.2.1 and use it in disk mode otherwise the player doesn’t see it. Meanwhile a friend of mine uses it's 60 Gb IPO on the same player, version 1.0 and it doesn't need to go to disk mode, and the player reads perfect from it. Is this a problem of the ipod software version?
Both ipods are in Fat32 format, but in his ipod the partition is set to active. I can't change mine to that, because windows is seeing my IPOD as a removable device, and my friend’s IPOD as a disk.
Hope I haven't been too confusing, and I welcome any help anyone can give.
    Thanks.

Sorry, but I don't even know
what it is you are trying to do. Are you attaching
the iPod to a stand alone DVD player? Are you trying
to export stuff out of the iPod into the DVD player?
    Patrick
Hi, I'm attaching the iPod to a stand alone DVD player, that has a usb input port. And then read video files from it.

  • How do I burn a DVD R disc with Windows Movie Maker?  It indicates disc error on my DVD player.  Someone thought it had something to do with Itunes?  I reloaded Itunes 1 month ago and had no problem creating this disc then.  Help

I have made several DVD+R discs in the past using Windows Live Movie Maker sucessfully.  I made one about one month ago for my son's b-day.  I am using the same discs as I had then.  When I tried to burn the disc, it indicates that it is burning, however, when I insert it into the DVD player at home on our TV (like I"ve always done), it indicates disc error.  Someone mentioned that the burner goes out every now and then when Itunes is uploaded?  When I burn the disc, I can pull it up on my home and work computers, so I know that it is there.

Yes, you can distribute a burned disk of the project to those who can create duplicate disks.  Or create a disk image of the iDVD project using the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option.
Then you can distribute the disk image to those who will burn the disks.  For PCs you'll have to convert the .dmg file to a .iso file so they can burn it.  This website describer how: Mac Help - Convert and Burn Mac .dmg or .img to .iso Windows PC-Compatible Disk Image
Suggest to them to burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
It would be prudent to rest your optical drive for about 30 minutes after burning 3 disks in a row. That will give the laser time to cool down before you start another batch.

How do I create an iDVD slide show that does not compress the photos making them low-res? When I insert the iDVD I have made into a DVD player connected to an HDTV, the playback quality of the pictures are very low.  Is there a way to correct this when creatinf the iDVD?

  • DVD does not play on DVD-Player

the first time this happened to me:
I built a DVD (it is just one videotrack!)
It plays on the Mac, but as soon as I put it into my player,
    it does not work.
    Does anyone have an idea,
what I might have done wrong/what could be the reason?
    Thanks for any help!
    Swantje

I think I did not make a HS SVS.
I have to admit, that I don´t even know, how to do this.
(I am working with DVD Studio Pro 3.
Is this possible with this version?)
What do you mean by ´first play´?
I am working with the german version and there
    I can define the ´starting funktion´.
    I did choose the track.
In fact the DVD is just consisting of this one track
that it starts with when you put it into the DVD player/into the computer.
I encoded the video with compressor and I used a preset that is already in the menu (less than one hour, high quality)
The audio I encoded with A-Pack.
So far I had the best ecperiences with this.
As I said, the DVD consists just of these two assets:
the video with the audio it goes with.

  • Encore DVD Writing Cancels won't play on DVD player issue

So I have a very confusing issue with encore.
When I press build everything works fine. Then writing begins. The moment the writing reaches the end of the progress bar (the exact moment)  the progress bar goes to empty and the bottom bar says canceling and ejects the DVD. Usually (not every time) a pop up menu saying "end of file" appears next. When I press ok for end of file message the pop up disappears and suddenly the DVD progress bar is filled and the DVD says completed (as if nothing just happened). So I'm confused whether it worked or not!
I reinsert the DVD that just ejected into my Mac and it works! Then I put it into a DVD player and it won't play, it won't play on my old Xbox 360 either, but it WILL play in a Bluray player?!
Everytime I rewrite the files I get different results. They all work on my Mac and blu ray but only 1 of 4 works in the Xbox. The one that does work in the Xbox will read in the DVD player but plays choppy and  skips  around as if the DVD is scratched or damaged?
! Other differences involve the write speed, sometimes the options are 8x or 4x. Other times its 3x,2x, and 1x. When the latter write speed options occur I cannot press "test before writing" it's greyed out. When 8x and 4x are the speed options I can check it.  I used different DVDs and it didn't help.
I work for a company that needs to copy the DVDs but they can't be copied. Don't know why?
    Here are my settings
    Mpeg 2-DVD exported from Pr.
    720x480
    Codecs: Mpeg video, Mpeg layer
    Duration: 1:10:26
Encore DVD transcode status: Don't Transcode

    2 Menus
    1 Mpeg video
    1 Timeline
    Build
    Format: DVD
    Output: DVD disc
    Source: Create Using current project
    4.7 gb disc
    Has 510mb free
    All regions
    Unlimited copies
First Play and title button are a menu
    Check build is good.
I really need help with this weird issue quickly thanks.

Just an Update, I've tried many things to no avail still have a few others to try. Being a Large file it takes a while to try things.
I went ahead and got Toast, but considering that the Image Iso and the DVD Folder both gave me the End of File Error and the Disc "Failed Completed" Error I figured it a no go and it was. It did however give me something that Opened everywhere (Mac,Xbox,Dvd) , but it did not play on the Dvd correctly.
I've done numerous things in the Mac permissions end Like trying as a different user and running as the Root User, but it was also unsuccessful.
I've Re- Exported the file many different ways, but finally had a breakthrough using a version of M2v.  It's definitely an error with Finalizing. My disc previously began to mess up and give "END of File" after it finished writing, it never even made it to the "Writing Lead Out" stage. I beleive this is why it plays it certain places fine, but probably not as well in systems (like Dvd players) that require those last few steps like writing Lead Out.
The only issue I have now is that when I put it into the DVD player it say "No title"!?!? AY CARAMBA!!!
Now I'm working on trying to figure this NEW problem! I have all my menus and links in place, but no go. I think it may be related to the previous problem in that something beneath the surface is wrong with my computer. Being a used Mac with a restored Hard Drive there are probably endless possibilities, but I hesitate to think that way because it may also have absolutely nothing to do with it.
So any help is greatly appreciated
whether it be a specific issue you know of dealing with used Macs and issue similar to mine
or just on the "NO Title" error as a separate issue. I'm hoping this "No Title" is something simple and unrelated,  I've already burned through about 13 discs and even more pain pills for the headaches!!

  • Won't play in DVD player

after finishing my DVD I placed it into the DVD player hooked to my TV and it said to check the TV systems(not to sure , what that meant) but I tried in another and it said the same thing. So I changed the setting on idvd to NYSTA (I think), because it was on PAL and I then copied it that way and it still didn't work. Please help. I am getting VERY agitated! I have used the DVD's before.

    Hi
My pennies added to SDMacusers very good answer.
*On DVD quality and playback ability*
    1. iDVD 8 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    2. From
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Use iMovie HD 6
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 this can also be set)
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality depends on:
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS: They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD08
    Pro Quality (only in iDVD08)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD08
    2. Project info: Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD08.
    Region codes:
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes:
    1 = US
    2 = EU

  • How can I burn a movie to a DVD so that it will play in a DVD player?

I've tried burning the movie in Itunes and via the "Burn" option when right clicked. The file burns just fine and it shows up on my computer as a DVD. Yet when I insert the disc into my DVD player, it says there is not any data - audio or video wise.

  • Old Apple cinema monitor to a Roku or VHS/DVD player?

Hello, I am wondering if there is an adaptor I can use to hook up my old Cinema Display to a vhs/dvd or roku player. Any help would be appriecated.

Unlike similar sized monitors from Dell, the Apple 30 inch cinema display only has DVI input. You can in theory plug it into a DVD player which has DVI output (or HDMI via a converter) and it will display the lower resolution, but it's not going to be much better than just playing the DVD off your Mac

  • DVD's played on external DVD player freezing

I'm burning some DVD's on my MacPro but when i pop that DVD into a DVD player connected to my TV, it seems to freeze up. Any ideas?? thanks

    Hi V
Yes there are several possible origins to this:
    • burning the DVD with x16 speed often gives so much errors that they doesnt work
    • using a cheap brand - same
    • wrong type of DVD
    • to little free space on internal (start-up) hard disk
    1. I make a DiskImage then use Toast™ to burn with x1 speed (one can use Apple Disk Util tool to do this - in iDVD08 one can select burn-speed)
    2. I use Verbatim DVD-R
    3. I use -R no +R or +/-RW disks
    4. iDVD needs 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. 10Gb might work but slow.
<5Gb if it reaches to goal - most probably an useless DVD disk is the result.

  • DVD will not play in dvd player

    Hi,
I created a dvd in dvdpro and put into my dvd player and it says it can not play my dvd. Is there some sort of setting that I missed?

You misunderstand. You most likely created and burned an HD DVD in DVD Studio Pro.
iMovie will only build and burn standard DVDs so of course it will work.
Drew put up a link to another thread where this is discussed is excruciating detail. Read through it and you should be on you way to addressing your problem.
