Turning my Macbook Pro into a server

I have read over and over (MacX -Missing Manual) on how to let people access your computer as server or FTP sever,Host my own sites etc... No matter what I try nothing works.
My goal is to have files on my Mac and let my band members access them when thy need them then reload them to my comuter when they finish their modifications. We were using my .Mac acct. but we are working with .WAV files and they are on the larger size.
I also want to host my own .coms that I already have from my Mac.
Can anybody direct me to the proper setup info?

Not sure that this will work:
firstly the personal web sharing thing is only for
computers on a network or intranet not across the
internet.
That's not true - I used it for years to host my own website. The button in System Preferences simply issues the command 'sudo apachectl start' to start the Apache webserver.
Anyway, to host your website, you'll need to not only turn on Personal Web Sharing (the relevant firewall ports on the G5 should open up automatically) on the G5, but you'll need to set up your router as well.
Hopefully there's some place on your router where it shows you its WAN IP, i.e., the address that it has for the "outside world". That's the address that any visitor would need to connect to. Of course, this could change if you have a dynamic IP connection with your ISP.
The router also needs to be configured to forward traffic to your G5 if that traffic arrives on port 80 (the standard port for http traffic), and maybe on port 443 (for https connections). This may be called port forwarding or virtual servers or something like that, depending on whose router you have. You'll also need open up those ports on the router's built-in firewall.
If you want to use "proper words" in the URL, you need a domain name. Preferably, you'll have a static IP address to use with this, or if you don't, you can use a service such as DynDNS.
This is the setup in a nutshell. Work with getting this configured and see if someone can successfully connect to your server from the outside.
Feel free to post back with questions as much as you like. It will work; I had my old PM9600 (running OS X) operating as a webserver/mailserver for several years.

  • CAN I TURN MY MACBOOK PRO INTO A MONITOR?

Help I want to turn my Macbook Pro into a monitor for my Playstation 2 so that way I can record on my screen using quicktime. please help I used a vga adapter from apple a AV to vga converter, and is their any way for me to use an iphone on a mac to play ios games while recording?

I don't think you can without some sort of capture card (very expensive, and because most MacBook Pros don't have a card, you need to use the FW800).  MBP's Thunderbolt port only sends video signals out, you can't attach an HDMI to Mini DisplayPort cable from your camera to the MBP and expect to show video.
You could try a utility like Sofortbild.

  • How to turn a Macbook Pro into a second display for another Macbook Pro

So my school just gave me a Macbook Pro and I already have a Macbook Pro. I would like to know if I could turn my school Macbook Pro into a second display for my regular Macbook Pro. Thank You!
Both Macs are running Mavericks 10.9.4

If you need administrative access and it is denied to you, then there is no way, as ScreenRecycler and AirDisplay do need administrative access to be installed.

  • Able to Dock MacBook Pro into iMac Display?

I have a MacBook Pro which I keeped docked into/connected to my Apple LED Cinema Display when I'm not on the road or at meetings outside of my office. This allows me to work with my MacBook Pro closed and with a keyboard and mouse at hand, almost as if I'm using a desktop.
My father's asked me to look into purchasing an iMac for his home, which I frequently visit. Would it be possible for me to dock my MacBook Pro into the iMac display similarly to how I can dock my MacBook Pro into my Apple LED Cinema Display? (And, if so, are there any additional accessories I need to do this?)
For example, can I close my notebook? Can I use the iMac mouse and keyboard? Can I play music on the iMac speakers? Can I use the iSight camera? I realize the iMac needs to be turned on when being connected to, which implies that the iMac operating system and programs would be running in the background, but can I basically keep the iMac operating system and programs "hidden" so that it feels like I'm purely using my MacBook Pro?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex

    Boot into Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot can take a few minutes compared to a normal boot.
Once you are in Safe Mode open System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items
If you have anything listed there to launch when you startup your Mac, delete all items.
Then go to the Apple menu / Restart.
You can also use Safe Mode to do a "live verification" of the startup disk in case it needs repairing.

How do I add my new iPhone4s to iCloud's "Find my iPhone"? I followed the iCloud instructions and turned on Macbook Pros' system prefs to "find my mac", turned on iPhone4s's "location services" and set up iCloud, etc. In the "Find my iphone" tab of my new iCloud account (on my Macbook Pro) my iPhone4s still won't show—but my macbook does show. I had my iPhone4s set up at the phone store (2 days ago) and It receives gmail, my contacts and calender entries, the weather, etc. I installed the "Find iPhone" app from iTunes on the iPhone4s, synched to iTunes, even reset the phone, but the only device that gets located is my Macbook Pro. I can send a "sound" message to my Mac (and the Mac recieves it) but unable to see the iPhone4s from my Mac, let alone send any message. Any suggestions to get the iPhone4s device to appear in iCloud?
Thank you in advance for your help.

OK, I figured it out...I deleted the iCloud account off my iPhone (Settings, iCloud, Delete Account), and then added iCloud back in (Settings, iCloud, SignIn)....and then my email (iCloud) and "Find my phone" features worked! Nice!!!!

I installed bootcamp but became a pain to use so I unistalled it. Now every time I turn my Macbook pro on it keeps asking me what startup disk to use. I tried using the system preferences to correct this but it hasn't worked. I even restored my mac back to factory settings but it still asks me what startup disk to use. I have looked everywhere for a solution but one anywhere

Delete the System Preference .plist file (preference file) and when rebooting and #2 Reset the PRAM
Deleting the System Preference or other .plist file
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then head to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select the OS X volume to boot from.

  • Hi, I turned my macbook pro off before I went to sleep, and this morning when I awaken. I can't seem to use the volume at all! I went to system preferences sound output BUT everything is light grey and it some-how looks like I don't have permission.

Hi, I turned my MacBook Pro off before I went to sleep, and this morning when I awaken. I can't seem to turn up or down my volume. It comes up with all the volume bars and a little circle sign with a diagonal line in the middle, like a stop sign. I have gone to system preferences > Volume > Output BUT all my volume preferences have gone all light grey and wont let me access them.
    Anyone help?

  • When i turn my macbook pro on I get a green apple then just a white screen

When I turn my macbook pro on I get a green and white lined apple then just a white screen anyone help please ?

    Hey there Petecaswell,
It sounds like you are seeing a green Apple logo, and then a white screen before the computer boots to your user. I would start by updating your computer:
OS X: Updating OS X and Mac App Store apps
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1338
Then if the issue persists, I would perform a PRAM reset:
OS X Mavericks: Reset your computer’s PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (⌘), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

    If you are using Lion:
Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.
