Turning off AutoCorrect in Lion

When I go to System Preferences > Language & Text > Text > Correct Spelling Automatically, and turn it off, nothing happens. Lion still suggests words and changes words automatically. Is this the right setting or is it located somewhere else in the system?

That is the correct setting, but it will not take effect with any running applications. You have to quit the application(s) and relaunch and then the autocorrect will be gone.

  • How do I turn off autocorrect in Mail?

In Mail, I would like to turn off autocorrect, which makes me say many ridiculous things! How do I do that? I've looked and looked and can't figure it out. Thanks!

    Hello there Centime,
It sounds like you are wanting to turn off the spelling correction feature in the Mail application. You should be able to do that with these steps from the following article:
OS X Yosemite: Check spelling and grammar
For a specific app: In the app, choose Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Correct Spelling Automatically (it’s off when a checkmark isn’t shown).
For all apps: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard, click Text, then deselect the “Correct spelling automatically” checkbox.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • How to turn off hyperthreading in Lion?

I've read discussions about turning off hyperthreading, but none of the methodolgies suggested will work in 10.7.  How can this be done in Lion?
I'd like to try turning it off because I have a number-crunching program that is called repeatedly and it hangs at different random points in the code sometimes, even when processing the same data (I have a test case that I've put into a loop--it fails after different numbers of iterations and at different points in the code but it is always running on the same data).  The same code runs with no problems on my SL Mac mini and MacBook 5,1, but not on my Lion Mac mini w/ 2.7 GHz i7.
I tried copying the CPUPalette.app from my SL computer as well as the SL Processor.prefPane, but neither will run under Lion.  I have the Xcode developer software (version 4.1, with updates) but can't find a version of CHUD for it (I've seen reference to stand-alone CHUD tools on the Developer site, but I can't find them and Search of the site doesn't recognize CHUD).  If someone can provide a direct link, that would be great!

No, I haven't.  Evidently that is not available through the free developer program.  Here's what I get when I follow that link:

  • How do I turn off autocorrect in numbers?

When I type 'est' autocorrect keep turning it into 'set' after I press the spacebar. I tried going to "language and text" in "system preferences" to turn autocorrect off, however Numbers keeps autocorrecting.
How can I stop Numbers from changing my texts?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
In Numbers 3.0.1 you can turn off auto-correction by choosing Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Correct Spelling Automatically (a checkmark is removed).   In this case, automatic correction stops working only in Numbers.app but works in other apps.
    >> Check spelling and grammar in documents
You can also turn off automatic text replacement by choosing Edit > Substitutions > Text Replacement (a checkmark is removed).
    >> Replace or substitute text in documents

  • How do I turn off autosave osx lion

How do I turn off autosave on osx lion? Just got new MacBook pro & autosave crashes Photoshop adobe when I'm doing large format design! This is a designers worst nightmare having autosave. Because you can do some work, then change your mind , but it's too late, autosave has saved over your work! Great for small files like text, but design large files? If you can't turn off autosave then apple can kiss goodbye to all it's design clients which is alot of there buyers I would imagine. Can you turn it off please help?

I have no way of knowing what Apple will do in the future. You can certainly report you wishes at
    Apple Feedback.
As for "oversight," I'd say it was yours, not Apple's. Should have done a little more research before you purchased. This "issue" is nothing new.

  • How do you turn off autocorrect in Mail?

Mail in 10.7 autocorrects everything. When I type Macintosh HD, it changes it to Macintosh HAD. I change it back to what I want, it insists on correcting me. There's no way to turn it off--all the options in system preferences and Mail preferences that claim to control this option don't work. If I were the responsible manager at Apple, I would fire whoever came up with that misfeature immediately if not sooner.

  • How do I Turn off Autocorrect?

I updated Skype to 6.22.0.107 and I was VERY upset when I found out that it had autocorrect!I have already tried going to my PC settings and turning "correct misspelled words" to "off".
How can I stop the autocorrect? Please help! it's very annoying!

This is horrible still. After all this time I would've expected this to be fixed by now . Skype should allow setting the autocorrection independent from the OS!!! I often Skype with people in different languages than my OS / default language. This causes Skype to completely screw up those messages because it's trying to correct them, not recognising I'm typing in a different language. I NEED to keep autocorrect enabled for the OS, but disabled for Skype.
    This is non-negotiable.

  • For crying out loud Apple turn off autocorrect.

    Apple,
    It's simple !!!!!!!
    AUTO CORRECT..........................OFF
    SPELL CHECK..............................ON
I'm sick to death of the stupid thing correcting words that are what I want, I want to proof read it and see everything it thinks is wrong underlined in red.
That's it, some of use the iPad as technical support for work and it simply can't handle the multitude of words acronyms etc,
Please give us the option to have auto correct off and spell check on.
Ryes (because the **** thing won't let me have RGDS) Simon.

Currently if you turn Auto-Correction OFF you also turn Check Speling OFF as well. There is no way to to have Check Spelling ON and Auto-Correction OFF.
That's what the complaint is about - It's not the first.

  • How to turn off IPV6 on Lion Server

I did a clean install of Lion Server on my Mac Mini. I need to enable the firewall on that machine.
My Mini is only connected via WiFi to the network.
Due to firewall / Networksoftware issues i would like to disable IPV6 on the Lion Server completely.
The menu however only shows entries for "Automatic, Manual or Link-Local". On a Lion install (no Server) there is also the "Off".
Is there any reason i cannot switch off IPV6? If i cannot switch it off how do i configure my firewall so my software no longer
tries to connect using IPv6. I assume IPV6 is chosen in the first place due to a mDNS running with IPV6 enabled as i only configure ipv4 stuff and have eliminated all ipv6 completely from all other os's.
    thanks & regards
    udo

I found a fix for this issue and applied it to several different MacBooks, iMac's, PowerMac's in the last couple of weeks. It works quite well and will now show or unlock the option of "Off" in the IPv6 section of GUI once these process is completed.
Click some place on the desktop
Click on the Go menu at the top of your screen
    Click on Utilities
Inside the Utilities menu you will find the utility called Terminal
    Open up Terminal
Depending if your account has admin privileges or the following will be different.
In the terminal window type in the following:
networksetup –listallnetworkservices  (precede this command with su or sudo if you are not logged in as an admin of the MAC)
You will see a list of network services such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, Firewire etc etc.
The next couple of commands will enable a new option in the GUI that will say Off under your Wi-Fi and Ethernet etc.
    networksetup -setv6off Ethernet
    networksetup –setv6off Wi-Fi
    networksetup –setv6off FireWire
networksetup –setv6off 'Bluetooth PAN'  (if you have this)
networksetup –setv6off 'VPN (PPTP)'   (if you have this)
Close the terminal window and reboot your MAC
You will be all set and all IPV6 stuff will be disabled for your networking and you will also have the new option in the GUI to change it if you so choose to in the future.

  • Ever since i downloaded OSX Mountain Lion, Express VPN no longer works properly for me. Even though it says I am connected, webpages refuse to load. However, everything works fine when its turned off. I cannot go on many websites without the VPN.

Ever since i downloaded OSX Mountain Lion, Express VPN no longer works properly for me. Even though it says I am connected, webpages refuse to load. However, connection speed is fine when its turned off. I cannot go on many websites without the VPN. My current location is Shanghai, China. OSX Mountain was installed this morning and everything worked fine until then. Is Express VPN not supported? What do i need to do in order to get it working again on my Macbook Pro (early 2011). I want to be able to go on websites such as Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, ect...

    Hi,
I am having the same issue listed above on my new Mac Mini i just bought, I also contacted Express VPN support and got the same instructions with exception of the command to run in the utilities terminal.  I tried the steps listed, and both commands (posted here, and sent to me directly by Express VPN support), and still unable to connect on my Mac Mini running OS X 10.8.2, but I am able to connect on my iPad and my MacBook which is running Mac OS X 10.6.8.  Usually Express VPN is spot on with their customer support, but this is taking longer to get resolved.  Here is the steps sent to me
Try doing the following to see if the problem gets resolved:
Please follow the instructions here: https://www.expressvpn.org/support/setting_dns_servers_mac_os
(should still be the same for Lion) and then add the following DNS servers: 8.8.8.8 & 208.67.222.220. After adding the DNS servers, please do the following steps as well:
Note: If you're connecting to your ISP via a PPPoE connection, then set the DNS servers on the PPPoE connection itself and then restart your computer for the DNS settings to take effect.
    1. Click on Applications
    2. Click on Utilities
    3. Click on Terminal
    4. Type the following command (without the quotes): "sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder"
    5. Press enter and then try reconnecting to the VPN.
If you're still unable to connect, please send us in the latest log files.
Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

  • How do I turn off internet recovery in Mountain Lion?

I need to turn off internet recovery in Mountain Lion. The reason is if you use internet recovery you can access safari and although parental controls are on, internet is unmonitored. I want to ensure my MBP is secure from the darker parts of the internet and thus I don't want there to be any unmonitored internet access.
Is there a way to turn off internet recovery or is it hardwired into Mounatin Lion?
    Seb

Open firmware password may be the way to do it.   Mind you, a clever enough person can bypass that, but it takes more effort than it usually is worth.  Put a hidden camera in the room if you are worried something will happen, and backup the data only when you are present.  And if you forget the open firmware password, you may have locked yourself out for good anyway.
