Turning off Firewall Kills Internet

I am using my Mac Mini Server as a DHCP server, Firewall, and NAT device.  I use a WiMax USB dongle as my internet connection.  The dongle uses a connection software that constantly fights with my firewall.  The firewall will cause it to disconnect and interfere with the connection process.  I know this because when I turn off the firewall, the connection software easily connects to my WiMax service and stays connected.   Not only that, but the behavior doesn't occur when I connect the dongle directly to a different computer.  The problem is no internet traffic is passed to the client computers or the server when the firewall is turned off.  Is there a way to turn off the firewall and still have the NAT pass internet traffic?
Kooly

The Mac OS X Server Internet sharing (NAT) feature requires the use of the Mac OS X Server firewall, so no you cannot turn it off.
It would be worth seeing if your WiMax dongle has any newer software available to download, also it is possible to get a hardware router and use 3G data dongles, it might be worth seeing if a similar approach can be done with a WiMac dongle.

Some folks have discovered that changing their DNS service fixes FaceTime connection issues.
    The ideal way is to configure your modem/router with DNS service, but often settings in System Preferences/Network/Advanced/DNS on your Mac will override the router settings. Try either of these;
    OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
    Google Public DNS

Hi Jen.  My daughter just compleated her nursing program and is now working as a full time nurse.  Focus and study hard and soon you will be there too.  Now to the problem at hand.  I have the same problem.  I gave up on it and satisfied myself with my iPod without the upgrade.  Reason being I've read so many posts of people having problems after the upgrade.  But I'm sure other factors are involved.  Nevertheless here is the fix most say works to solve the problem:  What ever virus protection you have installed on your computer, disable it.  Then try to install the update. After that enable the protection. I had Kaspersky, and it does it's job well. The thinking is, the virus protection is blocking the upgrade.  Hope this works.   Charlie

  • Can't connect to internet without turning off firewall

For the last few days, I cannot connect to the internet unless I turn off the firewall in Security. I suspect it is due to the latest OSX update after which the connection problem appears. Does anyone have the same problem? I connect using wifi via Airport Extreme Base Station which I hope protect me to some extent online. I don't want to go online unprotected. Can someone help?

thanks James. My hard drive died shortly afterwards. After putting in a new drive and re-installed from backup, the problem went away. I guess it was the result of the dying hard drive.

  • HINT: Turn off Firewall to enable Internet Sharing

it only took 2 hours of trial and error, but I am finally able to access the internet from my iPhone via my father's iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo, purchased in May 2009).
    turn OFF the Firewall!
    setup:
    iPhone 3.1.2
    iMac 10.6.2
Internet Sharing On: From ethernet, To Airport
    cheers.
(keywords: iPhone, Internet Sharing, Snow Leopard, Airport, Firewall)

mmm... I had actually edited my original post but it didn't stick.
rather than turn off the Firewall (not ideal as the man from Virginia has rightfully pointed out), turn off the "Block all incoming connections" option in Advanced options.
    cheers.

  • How to temporarily turn off firewall to allow download of Adobe

Tried to download new Adobe Flash Player. Started to download but stopped asking to turn off my Firefox firewall. Don't know if I should and how to do it.

Firefox is a browser, not a firewall. Follow the instructions below.
There are 2 versions of Adobe Flash:
*an '''ActiveX version''' for IE only
*a '''Plugin version''' for most other browsers including Firefox
*On a Windows system, you should always update both individually.
'''''You do not appear to have the Plugin version for Firefox installed. ''''' If you did, in Add-ons > Plugins you would see "Shockwave Flash ''(version)''". If "Shockwave Flash" is there and is disabled, click the "Enable" button.
Check your Plugins often --> http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/
*only the most popular/used Plugins are known by this page
*page will detect only installed, '''''enabled''''' Plugins
    '''<u>Install or update Adobe Flash</u>'''<br />
#'''<u>Using Firefox</u>''', go to the following link and SAVE the download to your desktop so you can find it later. Un-check any items on that page that you do not want to download (i.e., "McAfee Security Scan Plus":
#When the download is finished, close Firefox (File > Exit '''''OR''''' Firefox button > Exit)
#Click or double-click on the file you just saved to your desktop
#*In the installation window that appears, click the box to the left of "I have read and...." to place a check mark in the box
#*The "Install" button in the lower right corner will now be highlighted, click it.
    #*The installation is quick.
#Start Firefox and test your installation here: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
#To update/install the ActiveX version for IE '''''only''''', repeat the process, '''<u>but use IE to go to the above website</u>'''.

  • How do I disable the "Protected mode is currently turned off for the Internet zone" message?

The message is a waste of my screen real estate. Yes, Protected mode is turned off. Sure it is, I turned it off myself, and it will stay off. Now how do I disable this annoying nag message?
Also the messages about File Downloads. Never once in my life I clicked a download link by mistake. Yes, I'm clicking that dang URL, because I wan't to download that dang file, now get out my way, annoying warning message. How do I disable this one
    too? Thank you in advance

Ok so after facing this myself I determined "By Design" wasn't acceptable.  So I traced down the registry file that gets rid of this message for everyone.  This is especially useful for RDS (Remote Desktop Services Servers) and IE9 with Roaming
profiles and Redirected folders.  I have the full write up here:

  • I have to turn off Firewall to send files to ftp server

My ISP changed to a different server, since when I have had to turn off the firewall on my Mac 10.4.8 if I want to connect to it to upload or download files.
If the Firewall is on, Transmit (my ftp program) seems to be able to log in, but the list of files doesn't appear. The staus reads as 'status: retrieving list of files'. When I turn off the Firewall, the list of files appears.
Have 'passive mode' on or off makes no difference.
    Any thoughts gratefully received.
    Kind regards
    Richard

Have you asked your ISP what changes you might be required to make?
They changed something required to login. Why is this a "mac" issue?
When you have Firewall turned on, and try an upload...you can examine the logs to see what kind of things are logged during this apparent FTP failure.
OK, Have you tried another FTP client? (CyberDuck, Fetch, etc)
Have you tried using Terminal to do a manual FTP (and do away with the silly GUI's?)
    Enable firewall
    open Terminal.
    type ftp<enter>
type open [name/IP of your server location]<enter>
    you'll be asked for authientication...login...
    type ls<enter> {that's an ell, and an ess}
Any results? (type quit<enter> to end your FTP session

  • Turn off firewall for ASA running IPS

I have two ASA devices. 5510 with IPS and 5520 with Content scanning. The 5510 sits behind the 5520. I want the 5520 to perform all firewall functions along with content scanning for spyware and viruses. The 5510 will be used purely for IPS for traffic that has been allowed through the 5520. Is there a way to effectively turn off the firewall on the 5510? Is there any inherent problems with this configuration?
    Regards,
    James Krysinski

Yes, you can turn off the firewall on ASA. For this remove any interface which is in outside or inside; better place all interfaces in same security level. Now permit all traffic between the same security level interfaces and remove any other config which was used for firewall.

  • Can I turn off icloud keychain internet account syncing

I do not want all internet accounts sync'd across all computers.  I do not want my personal email on my work computer and my work email on my personal computer.  How do I set that up for which accounts on which computers?
    Roy

    Hello rdegler,
The following article provides instructions for disabling iCloud Keychain.
Can I remove my iCloud Keychain from Apple's servers?
Yes. Follow these steps, starting on any one of your iOS devices or Macs that is using iCloud Keychain:
Devices using iOS 7.0.3 or later:
Go to Settings > iCloud > Account > Keychain and turn off “Approve with Security Code”.
Go to each of your other devices that is using iCloud Keychain and turn iCloud Keychain off.
Macs using OS X Mavericks v10.9 or later:
Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences. Click iCloud, then click Account details.
Deselect “Allow approving using security code”.
Go to each of your other devices that is using iCloud Keychain and turn iCloud Keychain off.
After you complete these steps, your keychain data will remain locally on your devices, but changes to your keychain information will not push to your other devices or the cloud unless you turn iCloud Keychain back on. If you want keychain data to push to all of your devices, but not to the cloud, turn on iCloud Keychain on each device as described earlier in this document, but skip the step to create an iCloud Security Code.
