  • When installing third party software, how do I temporarily turn off the factory installed virus sw and firewall?

when installing third party software, how do I temporarily turn off the factory installed virus sw and firewall?  Is it necessary on a Mac to do so?  I come from the Windows world and am still in the learning curve on the Mac.

Correct.  I have not installed ANY other software for anti-virus, etc.  I want to install a Synch app for my HTC phone to sych with MS Outlook 2011 installed on my Mac.    HTC will not synch with it otherwise.  That was really the basis for my question....if installing a non Apple app can be done without messing with factory settings on the Mac.  In Windows I remember that I needed to disable Norton and the Firewall in order for installation to occur.
    Thanks.

  • How can I turn off "Google Suggest" in Firefox. I hate it! hate it! hate it!

Firefox used to allow turning off "Google Suggest", but that's not possible with recent updates. I never, never, never (never!) want what "Google Suggest" insists on presenting to me. It's really inconvenient and a time waster.

Do you mean when you type a search, it will give a list of things before you have finished?, a pain....I'm sure there is something to the right of the search box that has a drop down menu, you can de-select it from there
    hope this helps

  • How to get the menu bar back after turned off all toolbars from the "View" menu

Do this: turn OFF all toolbar view from the view menu, with the Menu toolbar the last one.
Problem: cannot find any UI to turn it back, stuck with a bare window, except the tab list.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

Press the Alt key, this temporarily brings up the menu bar. You an then use the View menu to re-select the menu bar.

  • Turn off authenticate to install a program through terminal

    Hello,
I am trying to install a program called Pearl speaks NONMEM (PsN), an academic open-source program which pairs with another academic program, NONMEM. However, when it get's to the point:
    "mkdir /Library/Perl/5.12/PsN_3_5_3"
it cut's out, saying "Permission denied". I assume this is because to create folders in Library, it needs me to authenticate, but PsN is not sophisticated enough to cope with authentication. Is there any way I can turn authenticate off briefly to install the program (and then turn it back on again)?
    Thanks for any help!
    Rollo

I question whether you should be doing this without more shell knowledge, but you can temporarily acquire root privileges from an admin account by prefacing the command with "sudo" and entering your login password when prompted; e.g., "sudo mkdir..." If you make a mistake, there's a very real possiblility of destroying all your data, even including backups under some circumstances.

  • Accidently turned off mac during install now it won't reinstall

As stated above I accidently turned off my mac during an install of lion. Before installing lion i used disk utillity to delete the Hdd and now it wont resume the instalation. It´s booting with the lion disk and enters the instalation, but comes up with a fail message saying that lion connot be installed. I have tried to redelete my Hdd using diskutility but it still wont work. cannot seen to get anywhere from here.
    what to do...?

I had a similar problem.  See this problem / answer for a solution:
        http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    which I found at:
        https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3207417
Resetting the PRAM by pressing Command-Option-P-R during the boot was all I had to do.  It automatically did a restart and I pressed Option to get prompted for the boot drive (don't know if I had to do that last part).

  • How can I turn off the iCloud password prompt?

Running OS X 10.10.1, on each login I'm prompted twice for an iCloud password. How can I turn this off?
iCloud is not listed at system preferences / users and groups / login items, which is where I expect to see apps selected as startup apps. See the following screen cap - this is the dialog I'm seeing, which I want to turn off:

If you are using iCloud at all, stay signed in at System Preferences > iCloud.  If you do not stay signed in, all iCloud series will keep prompting you for the password.

  • Turning off Internet Connect automatic prompt

I have a Verizon Broadband Express wireless card for internet connections. I constantly have to turn off the prompt to start Internet Connect function. To try and stop this, I have gone to preferences and turned off the "Start internet connection when needed" function. It is annoying and distracting while giving a presentation.
PLEASE TELL ME how to get rid of this painful interruption.

  • Do you turn off firewall to install Adobe Flash?

I downloaded Adobe Flash and installed it. However, it does not show up in Applications and I still am turned way by many viewing sites like iTunes, etc. How about if I try turning off the firewall before beginning this process once again?

Flash is not an application, so it wouldn't be in the Applications folder. It includes a preference pane, which you will find in System Preferences. There is no Flash content on any Apple website, so if you're having trouble with content from Apple, it's not because of Flash.

  • Macbook Pro turns off during OS install

I have been given a 1st gen MacBook Pro to upgrade (clean install of Snow Leopard and a few apps). Specs are 2.16GHz with 2GB RAM and a (non-standard) 640GB drive. It is second hand so I don't know the history of it. After booting from SL DVD and starting the install (format drive first) the laptop turned off after a few minutes. Repeated process and same result and also tried a Leopard install DVD with the same result.
Any ideas? Never seen or heard of this ever happening to a machine short of having a power failure! The battery is fine and it will boot and run normally from an external drive.
    Any help appriciated.
    Cheers, Paul

  • My wifi wasn't working for more than 10 minutes at a time after updating to IOS8 and resetting network settings. I turned off google drive, turned off Bluetooth, reset network settings and rebooted my iPad4. So far so good.

I have an ipad4.  Wifi keeps cutting out after the upgrade even after I forget the network and resign on or reset all network settings. I deleted iCloud drive from my iPad, turned off Bluetooth, reset network settings, and rebooted my iPad. Since I upgraded to IOS8 this is the longest wifi has consistently been working for me. Which is approximately an hour now. Anyone else find that this worked or have figured out if this or anything out there is a permanent fix?

    Hi CollinGCC78,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in troubleshooting this issue. If you are still having issues, you may want to double-check the steps outlined in the following article, in order if possible (apologies for replicating any steps you have already taken):

  • I need to turn off the iTunes update prompt programmatically (during install)- How?

I am deploying iTunes ver 10.2.214 to Windows 7 X64 PCs.  When the PCs launch iTunes they see a prompt, "A new version of iTunes is available.  Would you like to download it now?"
I need to disable that prompt during the iTunes install.  I have downloaded ORCA and set SCHEDULE_ASUW to zero as per the instructions on this website:
    http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#featuredarticles/FA_Deploying_iTunes/Int roduction/Introduction.html
I can open the iTunes64.msi and see that the property is set correctly (set to 0) but after I install using that .MSI it still prompts for the iTunes update.
How can I turn that off???
    Thanks!

Somehow, in trying to figure out how to get an envelope to print from the feeder tray (which I found out isn't possible), I turned on something that produces a printer screen prompt that says something like 'Manual Feed" then says the size of envelope and waits for response.  This is every time I print an envelope & it's really a pain and I'm not finding where/how to turn this off.  Can anyone help?  Thanks in advance.
