But rdesktop is only a client for accessing windows terminal server... isn't it? Or is there a linux server available as well, because that is really what I'm looking for?

seems strange to me thou. i stick to good old ssh X-forwarding or port-forwarding + vnc.

  • Is it possible to turn off imac display while mirrored display plays video?

I've set up a new 21.5" imac for my parents use in their living room and have connected their 52" lcd tv to the imac as a mirrored display.
One issue that i can't find a solution to is to find a way to turn OFF the imac display when they're watching content on the lcd tv. If they want to watch a film from the imac out to the LCD TV, they want to dim the lights and watch it, but the imac display being on in the dark room is distracting.
Is their any way (3rd party software??) to turn off the imac display while still being able to have the mirrored display running?

You should actually NOT use mirroring, although it would work OK on the 21.5-inch iMac because the screen resolution is identical to 1080p HDTV.
In System Preferences Displays pane Arrangement tab, turn mirroring OFF. This makes the HDTV screen extend the iMac's Desktop. In the diagram on that pane, it shows how the two screen arranged. The edge where they touch is where you can move your mouse cursor from one screen to the other. You can move the two screen around in the diagram, to match how the iMac and HDTV are located in the real world.
In System Preferences Displays pane Display tab, there will be a window for each screen. The 21.5-inch iMac's screen should be set to 1920x1080. The HDTV's screen should be set to 1920x1080 also, if it is a "1080p" HDTV.
To watch video content on the HDTV, first show the video playing in a window. Drag the window to the HDTV screen so that it is completely on that screen. Give the full screen command (usually Command-F). The video will play in full screen mode on the HDTV screen. In most video playing applications, such as DVD Player, QuickTime Player, iTunes, etc., the other screen (the iMac's screen in this case) will go black. It's not OFF, but it will display black.
Note: Some video playing apps have a preference setting for which screen gets the full screen. When playing video content in a browser window (such as YouTube or Hulu), when you go to full screen mode by clicking the +full screen+ button, the other screen will not go black.
As far as I know, there is no way to turn off the iMac display, even with mirroring turned OFF.

  • Is it possible to "turn off" iMac display (ie. run "headless")?

    Hello.
I've replaced my old late-model 2006 iMac (Core2Duo) with a new Mac mini. I'm going to be using the iMac to run Lion server (replacing an old G4 running Leopard server). Since I'm going to be placing the iMac in a server closet and managing it remote (via ARD), I don't need/want the display to be on. Aside from physically disconnecting the iMac display (which I'd rather not do), does anyone know of a way to "turn off" an iMac display?
I know I can do things like run a screen saver of a black image, etc. but that means the iMac is still using the backlight, etc. to display the black image. I know there's no official Apple-supported way to do this, but I'm hoping someone might know of a third-party hack that might work?
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

Yea, as stated in my question — since I'll be remote managing the box, sleeping the display won't work (as when I remote in, it's considered a mouse movement and the display turns on).
And by disconnecting the monitor, I literally meant disconnecting — in the case of that model iMac, it's simply disconnecting the inverter that powers the backlight. That's what I meant by literally disconnecting the display (and probably what I'll end up doing).
    Thanks,
    k.

  • Windows 8 "Turn off the display" setting not working

Hi all, I've got a TP W520 which I upgraded to Windows 8 with all updated Lenovo packages including the power mgt driver, Lenovo settings dependency package, and the newly installed Lenovo settings metro app. I'm seeing the following problem when trying to set a time for the monitor to shut off under Control Panel -> Hardware and sound -> Power Options -> Edit plan settings: - If I set any time other than never for "Turn off the display" such as 1 hour for example, the monitor will get turned off as soon as the screen-saver launches from the Windows 8 Lock Screen. - I'm not seeing this same behavior if I let the screen-saver launch while sitting at the desktop screen, problem is only seen from the Windows 8 lock screen. You can test this as follows: - Set "Turn off display" to any time i.e. 30 min - Change your screen-saver to launch after 1 min to test this - Type ctrl-alt-del then click lock to enter the lock screen, then let the screen-saver activate after a minute. - Once the screen saver tries to start, in my case, I see the monitor getting turned off and the screen saver doesn't even start. The monitor shouldn't get turned off until 30 min elapses. I'm suspecting some kind of bug with this which is still outstanding and I look forward to feedback from others on this issue. Thanks, John

  • Manually turning off iMac G5 Display

    Hi,
I've been searching around and haven't been able to find an answer to this.
I have my computer set to turn on the screen saver after 5 minutes of inactivity and turn off the display after 15 minutes of inactivity, and I like it that way. My computer is in my bedroom though, and sometimes I want the display to just shut off when I am going to sleep... but sometimes, I am working on something that takes the computer a while to process, such as exporting a large final cut file, burning a DVD, or leaving an away message enabled on AIM. I don't want to put the entire computer to sleep, because that stopps the process... and I don't want to wait 15 minutes for my display to shut off... and I don't want to change the Energy Saver settings every single time I want the display off!
Is there any way to do this?
Is there a script of somekind that can do this?
I'm familiar with the Apple-Option-Eject command, but that puts the entire computer to sleep, not just the screen.
I've also tried the "Lights Out" app... but that program doesn't do what I want. It's basically a different version of energy saver.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks so much.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and paste in the following:
display dialog "What type of sleep do you want?" buttons {"Display", "Full", "Cancel"} default answer "An administrator password is required."
    set {the_password, the_button} to {text returned of the result, button returned of the result}
    if the_button is "Full" then
do shell script "pmset -a displaysleep 0 sleep 15" password the_password with administrator privileges
    end if
    if the_button is "Display" then
do shell script "pmset -a displaysleep 1 sleep 0" password the_password with administrator privileges
    end if
Changing the power management settings through a method other than the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences requires an administrator password due to the permissions on the files which store them. Save the script as an application and place it in an easily accessible location. More information on the usage of pmset is available here.

  • When sharing screen from work with my home computer, is there any way to turn off the display at home?

Hi, sorry if this is a silly question, but when I'm viewing my desktop on the home computer from work (as in I've connected by finding my computer in the finder and hit the "Share Screen" button - is there any way to turn off the display at home? It seems a bit of a waste of power to have the screen on when I'm not actually there - I just need to be able to see all my programs etc on the remote screen in order to use them. My home computer is a 2011 iMac running latest Mountain Lion, work is a 2010 MacBook Pro.
    Thanks in advance!
    Matt

I've set up another user on my home Mac and left that one logged in. Now when I connect from work it asks me if I want to share the screen or log on virtually as my user. I think choosing the second option doesn't power up the screen.

  • Cant edit powersetting for laptop to turn off the display after .. when power is plugged in

I tried to set the setting on a laptop in our domain from "turn off the display after 5 minutes" to "never".
    the button is greyed out.
I tried the advanced settings, even that won't work.
Os on the laptop is windows 8.1 Pro, the laptop is a member in a domain.
    Anyone knows this issue?
    thanks,

    Hi,
    Are you referring to this?
Please check the policy Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Power Management\Video and Display Settings
(if deployed by a GPO created by server in a domain, then check Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\System\Power Management\Video and Display Settings)
in the right pane, find "Turn off the display (Plugged in)", check whether it is configured to a specific data.

  • How to turn off volume adjustment sound under Windows 7

    Hey all,
I'm running Windows7 x64 on an Intel iMac (July 2010 revision).
Things are running well for the most part. However, I am unable to find a way to turn off the blooping sound played when adjusting the volume in Windows 7 (I know how to turn it off in OS X). I have tried turning off all system sounds under Windows, but the volume adjustment sound still plays. Does anyone know how to turn this off? I find it jarring. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give.
    Thanks.

That too bad because I use the MBP to do my radio show and it's very annoying. I know you can turn it off on the mac side.

  • Turning Off the Display

    Hi,
Is there a way to turn off the display manually? I use flight simulator a lot and there is motion on the screen so it won't turn off automatically. I was hoping there was a key command or something I could use to turn it off when I left the game running for a little.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Fn+F3 turns off the display(s) selected with Fn+F7.
But with motion on the screen it won't stay turned off.
Also hitting Fn+F3 will end full screen mode and return FS to a window which I think pauses it. If you know of a way to continue running FS in a diminished window Fn+F3 would work. Otherwise I think only way is to use Fn+F7 to select an external monitor only and then power off that monitor when you want to leave FS going.

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

  • Creative Zen 4gb, is it supposed to turn off the display to save the batte

I just bought a Creative Zen 4gb, is it supposed to turn off the display when I'm listening to songs?to save the battery?
Mine doesn't. It just goes dim.

Yes, it is possible. On the right hand side of the player is the slider to turn on the player, push the slider upwards to the lock position and the screen will turn off. That is the Hold mode. At this mode, all the buttons would be inaccessible to prevent accidental pressing of the buttons. This is the mode to use when you are just playing music and do not need the display.
To unhold the player, just push the slider to the middle position and all the way down to turn it off.

should iphone 4 receive messages when turned off and display them when switched back on

It's up to the cellular carrier, but I believe most (if not all) will enqueue the messages when your iPhone is off.
So generally speaking, a few minutes after you turn your iPhone on, your messages should display.  Similarly, your voicemails would arrive.

  • HT4623 How to turn-off tap display during passcode entry

I recently bought Iphone 4s. I like the phone as such but one thing that I want to change is tap display while entering the passcode on lock screen. I don't want to see which keys I am entering as this can put my phone on risk as anyone close to me can see what keys I had pressed to unlock the phone.
Please help to let me know "How to turn-off tap display during passcode entry" on locked screen.
Thanks for the answers and suggestion.

This cannot be done.  You should simply hide the display from others' view.
iPhone 5S allows you to use your fingerprint instead of the passcode.
